Laurie Towers is a bassist within New York City's “downtown” scene of free improv, new music and punk-laden experimentalism. Over the past twenty-five years she's brought her R&B-driven counterpoint and chops to venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, sharing the stage with an array of musicians in the nexus between rock, jazz and the avant garde. Towers also made her mark in the upstate artists' community of Woodstock NY where she was referred to as a “bass wizard” in a ‘Woodstock Times' review. As a member of the Red Microphone, she recorded with revolutionary poet Amina Baraka for the legendary ESP-Disk label. Also a successful business owner and host of her feminist radio show, Towers' tenacity and activism have guided her journey, offering a model of empowerment for women in the arts and more. Towers has also been a member of the Dissident Arts Orchestra from the start. Creating downtown-style improvised scores to silent films. On Halloween, the Orchestra crafted a unique soundtrack to the FW Murnau terror classic ‘Nosferatu' with Towers' pulsating, throbbing fretless bass offering the vampire a voice to be reckoned with. Capping off her rebel yell for women's rights, Laurie Towers created ‘She's Raising the Bar', a weekly podcast, in 2012. As its producer and co-host, she's engaged an array of woman actors, writers, vocalists and entrepreneurs and broadcasted her show live from the NYC Women's March, in the heat of battle. Despite all the trouble that dogged the label, there's a reason ESP-Disk' recordings still hold listeners spellbound 50 years later. It's as simple as the motto that was on the back of every album: “the artists alone decide.” While that may seem to be a recipe for chaos, it often worked with Stollman's shoestring operation, usually with just the one studio engineer, Richard Alderson, who got off one of the book's better lines: “Sun Ra is Duke Ellington on acid”.

ESP-Disk', a record label started in New York in 1963 by Bernard Stollman, unleashed a sonic blast of free-form rock ‘n' roll, free jazz, ur-freak-folk, poetry, and experimental music until the end of the decade, a blast that would leave a mark on the next two generations. ESP introduced the world to, among others, The Fugs, Pearls Before Swine, the Velvet Underground, and the Holy Modal Rounders, and widened the audience for Albert Ayler, Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders. In 2012, Jason Weiss published Always In Trouble, an oral history of the label, which has been resurrected and is again releasing its back catalog and exciting new music.

Cutting his teeth on Beatles, show tunes and ‘60s AM radio, Bob Windbiel first formed a blues duo with childhood pal Ralph Robbins when he was twelve years old. His high school band EDGE played rock n' roll, blues and jazz-rock fusion in the early-mid ‘70s. With the electric-avant-jazz group OUTLET he recorded three albums one of which was released on the legendary alternative jazz label ESP-Disk. He led and composed most of the material for two indie-rock bands from the mid-‘80s through the early ‘90s: Mod Lang and Marcel Monroe. Bob's hybrid, concert instrumental and vocal music has been performed by Jed Distler and Jenny Lin, just to name a few. And locally, Bob played guitar in the pit band for Inwood's Pied Piper Children's Theater for several productions while his children Bix and Genevieve were on stage.  After graduating from Lehman College, he became the electric guitar teacher at the school and formed the Lehman Guitar Ensemble, for which he arranges music ranging from classical to jazz to blues to pop to rock 'n roll.  In addition, he continues to record and occasionally perform professionally with both EDGE and OUTLET.

In this episode we welcome the wonderful Vashti Bunyan — all the way from her home in Edinburgh — and ask her about her magical music and the remarkable memoir she's just published. The "freak folk" legend — though she strongly disavows the "folk" tag — begins by talking of her early musical memories, among them meeting an unhappy Cliff Richard backstage in Blackpool in 1961. She describes her dream of becoming a pop singer in mid-'60s London, and how that led her to the Mayfair office of Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Briefly and unhappily typecast as "a dark-haired Marianne Faithfull", she recalls the session for the Jagger-Richards song 'Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind', backed up in the studio by Jimmy Page & Nicky Hopkins.Vashti explains how she felt equally adrift in the world of folk, eventually dropping out of the London music scene to travel to the Outer Hebrides in a horse-drawn wagon. This is the journey she writes about so vividly in Wayward, leading circuitously to Joe Boyd producing her 1970 album Just Another Diamond Day. After a discussion of that exquisite record, she talks about why she neither wrote nor sang another song for 30 years… then admits how much it meant when younger admirers like Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart discovered the album in 2000, subsequently appearing on her Lookaftering (2005) and Heartleap (2014).With Nick Drake's final album Pink Moon turning 50 this year, we take Vashti back to the awkward afternoon she spent trying to write a song with him after Joe Boyd had introduced them. Along the way we hear clips of Joe speaking to Gerrie Lim about Nick's guitar playing and "romantic doom" in 1994.After paying our respects to Saints frontman Chris Bailey, we touch on highlights among the 120+ articles just added to the RBP library, including pieces about Charles Mingus (1962), Dusty in Memphis (1969), the Smiths (1987) and Fatboy Slim (1997). It's been a tough year for New York. This episode we check in with Geng, the man behind one of our favorite labels, Purple Tape Pedigree, and see how these fine “purveyors of weaponized media and information” are handling the pandemic and the uprisings. With live performance no longer an option, the model of mutual support demonstrated by a crew like PTP is all the more important. Geng tells us about the history of PTP, the benefits of peer-support, community activism, and why it's more important now than ever to understand hip hop as spiritual music. It’s been a tough year for New York. Geng tells us about the history of PTP, the benefits of peer-support, community activism, and why it’s more important now than ever to understand hip hop as spiritual music. Interview recorded between Montreal and Queens, May 2020 and January 2021 Produced and mixed in Montreal, February 2021 Read more at: http://acloserlisten.com/2021/02/19/sp-episode-17-before-the-internet-with-geng-ptp-podcast TRACKLIST ARTIST – “TITLE” (ALBUM, LABEL, YEAR) Milford Graves with Sunny Morgan ‎– – “Nothing 19” (Percussion Ensemble, ESP Disk, 1965) INTRO Raekwon/RZA – “Ice Cream (instrumental)” (Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, Loud, 1995) Amani + King Vision Ultra – “An Unknown Infinite” (An Unknown Infinite, PTP, 2020) King Vision Ultra – “excerpts from B Side” (Pain of Mind, PTP, 2018) Amani + King Vision Ultra – “Guillotine” (An Unknown Infinite, PTP, 2020) Milford Graves, Marshall Allen, Henry Grimes – “(live excerpt)” (Angel Orensanz Center / Arts for Art – 4 Dec 2012) Geng – “Iron Man (Chopped _ Slowed by Geng)” (Screwing Yourself To Live: A Chopped & Slowed Tribute To Black Sabbath, PTP, 2012) YATTA – “Bliss” (WAHALA, PTP, 2019) Dis Fig – “Excerpt” (An Atypical Brain Damage, PTP, 2018) Moor Mother – “This Week (Feat. Episode 4 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features the final interview with trombonist Roswell Rudd before his death in December 2017. Rudd was one of the pioneering figures of the jazz avant-garde; though he started out in a Dixieland band, by 1960, he was working with Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, and Steve Lacy. He was a member of the ensemble that recorded the legendary ESP-Disk’ album New York Eye & Ear Control, alongside Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray; along with Tchicai, drummer Milford Graves, and several different bassists, he formed the New York Art Quartet, whose debut album, also on ESP-Disk’, is a landmark of the free jazz era. He and Lacy collaborated for years, interpreting Thelonious Monk's music without a pianist; he was also on multiple Shepp albums in the ’60s, and appeared on the Jazz Composers Orchestra album Communications. In the 2000s, Rudd explored music beyond jazz, recording albums with Mongolian musicians and with Puerto Rican guitarist and cuatro player Yomo Toro. His latest releases include Strength and Power, a collaboration with keyboardist Jamie Saft , bassist Trevor Dunn , and drummer Balazs Pandi, and Embrace, with singer Fay Victor, pianist Lafayette Harris, and bassist Ken Filiano. Rudd was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, and battled the disease until his death in December 2017, but maintained as busy a recording and performing schedule as he could until the end. It’s easy to tell, in this conversation, that he was in poor health; he spoke softly and slowly. But I think it’s still a very interesting interview, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.

On today's episode, I talk to painter and singer-songwriter Ed Askew. Born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1940, Ed left in the early '60s to attend Yale Art School. In 1967, he moved to New York in the middle of the burgeoning Greenwich Village folk scene, and met Bernard Stollman, the founder of the ESP-Disk label, which was dedicated to releasing uncommercial acts, which included Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman and Ed's own folk album Ask the Unicorn. With no organized tours however, and hardly any press support from ESP, Ed's album soon descended into hardly-seen-or-heard obscurity status, before finally finding re-release in the mid-2000s on De Stijl Records. Since being rediscovered, Ed's past and current work has been celebrated with Pitchfork and many other high-profile music media praised his work, labeling him as a NY legend. His latest albums can be found on Spinning Gold Records, Tin Angel Records as well as Drag City. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.

In 1964, record producer Bernard Stollman founded ESP Disk with the motto "The Artists Alone Decide." Over the next ten years, Stollman's label secured legendary status, releasing a stream of avant-garde jazz, rock, punk and folk that consistently challenged the definition of what it meant to be avant-garde. It did so by bravely embodying its motto and embracing its instincts. Now seen as a fixture at the center of the volatile musical period of the sixties and seventies, in 1974 the label shut down under threat of bankruptcy. Then, five years ago Stollman resurrected the label and stepped into the fray of a fragmenting record industry nothing like what existed forty years ago. At the time, Stollman warned to expect surprises. Over the ensuing five years he has delivered on that promise, not only reissuing a host of classic ESP works, as well as gems culled from the vaults, but also reclaiming the mantel of a label at the forefront of experimentation that thrives on taking risks. From expansive retrospectives like the recently released Charlie Parker Boxset, to the sprawling punk-electronica-jazz explosion Barnacled, to the frenetic free-metal race Solar Forge, one never knows what will appear next. Once again, ESP has become synonymous with the unexpected. Speaking recently with Mr. Stollman about the re-evolution of ESP, it became clear why. Working on New projects and what we will seee soon is a treat!
