In April 1989, climbers Jim Sweeney and Dave Nyman embarked on a challenging ascent of the Elevator Shaft on Mount Johnson in the Ruth Gorge, Alaska. Their expedition took a perilous turn when Sweeney, leading the climb, experienced a harrowing fall due to a collapsing formation. The incident resulted in a fractured right hip for Sweeney. Facing treacherous conditions, Nyman initiated an extraordinary self-rescue mission, spending six hours lowering the injured Sweeney to safety. The climbers encountered multiple avalanches, losing crucial gear, and enduring extreme conditions. Nyman's subsequent attempt to seek help faced unforeseen challenges, further complicating their dire situation. As their ordeal unfolded, a plane piloted by Mark Niver inadvertently entered the scene, leading to a crash. Niver and his passengers, undeterred by the crash, became unwitting witnesses to the climbers' struggle. The situation took an unexpected turn when the climbers faced additional avalanches, losing more gear and battling the elements. The story underscores the critical importance of communication tools in remote climbs, as the absence of radios significantly impacted the rescue process. Ultimately, a complex rescue mission involving helicopters and skilled mountaineers led to the safe evacuation of Sweeney and Nyman on April 26. The climbers' resilience, coupled with a stroke of luck, played a crucial role in their survival. In this podcast episode, we sit down with Mark Niver, the pilot whose unplanned presence became a pivotal element in this gripping tale of survival and resilience. Join us as we delve into the details of this harrowing adventure, exploring the challenges faced by climbers in remote terrains and the unforeseen events that can shape the course of such expeditions. This story was turned into an episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive", link is below. I grew up in Minnesota, loved to hunt and fish. My father took me to Alaska at the age of 13 to go on a mountain goat hunt. I knew right then and there if I ever got the chance to come to Alaska I would. Three years later I came back and worked in a fish processing plant in Bristolbay Bay Alaska for a summer job. Then after high school in Minnesota I drove to Alaska to try and find employment. Landed a job with BP at their oilfield in Prudhoe Bay.  Three years later I also started commercial fishing in Bristolbay during my vacation time from the oilfield. In the meantime I learned to fly at the age of 19.  Got married and raised three boys, who all started fishing with me on my boat at the age of 10. Also managed to race the Iron Dog snow machine race 4 times…. It's a 2200 mile race through the heart of Alaska.  I retired from the oilfield but continue to commercial fish now. I'm 65 years old , still running the human race …..:) Here is the link to the "I Shouldn't Be Alive" episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_ykz3ktlbI Here is a detailed article to give you some background information on the story: https://publications.americanalpineclub.org/articles/13199002000/Fall-on-Ice-Avalanches-No-Radio-Alaska-Mount-Johnson Thank you SO SO SO much for listening and supporting us. BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 152: Murder of the Grand Kankakee Marsh “I have never yet found a place that equaled the Kankakee swamps for the variety of game to be found there.” – J. Lorenzo Werich, 1920. Few know the history now. None who experienced it are still alive to tell us the tale. But it was once known as The Everglades of the North, a million acres of marsh and swamp in Indiana and Illinois, with thousands of people living on the wealth of its fish and game, flocks of waterfowl darkening the skies, passenger pigeons, deer and black bear, beaver and muskrat and otter. For decades it was the so-called “pantry of Chicago,” providing wild game to markets and restaurants, furs to the garment and hat industries, tons of cut reeds for packing materials, and millions of board feet for lumber for houses, including fueling reconstruction after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Then the huge steam-powered dredges came, and the murder of the Grand Kankakee Marsh began. Can we ever put to rights what we once so thoughtlessly sundered? Join us for a conversation with Hal and two of Indiana's finest storytellers and conservationists: Jeff Manes, a former steelworker turned columnist for the Chicago Tribune who grew up fishing and hunting the swamp, and Jim Sweeney, of the Porter County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and Friends of the Kankakee.

Jim Sweeney became Executive Director of the Franklinton Development Association Community Development Corporation in 2002. While in that role for 14 years, Jim led the effort to revitalize Franklinton through the creation of over 150 affordable housing units, various community-building activities including founding the Franklinton arts district, and aggressive neighborhood advocacies on all levels.  Jim moved Franklinton, AKA “the bottoms,” to the center of the discussion about central Ohio development. He built consensus around the revitalization of east Franklinton as an arts destination, an initiative that gained the support of city hall and now has begun the path to reality. The fifth in line of five kids, Jim grew up fast to keep up with his siblings. What caught his attention as a kid was building – he'd find himself in the woods, taking pieces of lumber out of people's yards and building forts. This fascination with building wouldn't return until later in his life when he turned his attention to his old neighborhood and what could happen there with some conscious revitalization. Jim grew up in two worlds: The suburban lifestyle of Columbus and the dense city life of Brooklyn. He knew the benefits of both, and he became deeply attuned to the strengths of each place – more importantly, how he could utilize those strengths in urban planning. This conversation begs us to take a look at forgotten spaces and how we can truly have the best of both worlds. What Brett asks: [01:48] Can you tell us about your life growing up? [10:22] What kind of person were you in grade school? [20:16] What was it like going to college in Athens? [28:22] What was it about city planning that got you interested? [32:08] How did your studies start to shape you moving forward? [36:44] What inspired you to build and plan your own neighborhood? [42:24] Where did your vision for Franklinton come from? What was the beginning of that? [55:12] How are things in Franklinton and where are they going in the future? When people think of ice climbing in North America, the first places that might come to mind are Ouray, Colorado, Hyalite Canyon outside Bozeman, Montana - or the vast alpine region of the Canadian Rockies, just to name a few.  But perhaps the ultimate mecca for pure frozen waterfall climbing, is in and around Valdez, Alaska.  This temperate region, which encompasses the shared traditional land of the Ahtna, Athabaskan, Alutiq and Eyak cultures, averages around 300 inches of snow each year, making it a perfect environment for forming fat, blue ice routesThere's a rich climbing history in Valdez, starting when Jeff Lowe and John Weiland made the first ascent of the ultra-classic Keystone Greensteps in 1975.  Then, in the late 70's, a couple of young hotspot climbers from Fairbanks, Carl Tobin and Roman Dial, started ticking of dozens of first ascents, raising the standard of what was being done at the time.  In the 80's, climber's like Andy Embick, Chuck Comstock and Brian Teale, all Valdez locals, continued the tradition, establishing hundreds of classic first ascents.  And the old school merged with the new, when In February 1987, Steve Garvey and Jim Sweeney climbed Sans Amis, a grade 6 snow and rock line on the Keystone Wall - ushering in modern mixed climbing techniques to the Valdez area.  Although Valdez has remained popular over the years, it's continued to somehow stay under the radar to the mainstream climbing world.  But that hasn't stopped a new generation of Alaskans from continuing the tradition of adventure, exploration, and first ascents in the magnificent arena.  One of these ascents happened in Feb, 2021, during the annual Valdez Ice Festival, when Sam Volk, Ryan Sims, August Franzen, and Sam Johnson, headed back toward the remote Wartmanns Glacier.  Assisted by snow machines, and a boot pack put in a few day before by Sims and Johnson, the 200 meter, WI 6 climb was an instant classic.  Here's Sam Volk's trip report of that memorable outing. This Trip Report is made possible with the gracious support of The Firn Line Patreon backers. Continuing my mini-series of interviews on the Boston College point shaving scandal, I sat down with Jim Sweeney in this episode. Sweeney, a Trenton, NJ native, has traveled all over the world through his work with the Federation of International Men's Basketball Association (FIMBA) and just published his book, Old School Hoops. In this episode, I sat down with Jim to discuss his upbringing in Trenton, his playing career, the art of drawing fouls, and so much more! Enjoy!

The Audio Drama Show

Mr Hobson is on a train journey back to Liverpool for the funeral of Jim Sweeney, an ex-work colleague.  He is accompanied by memories of teaching at Quarry Bank - the teenage John Lennon's alma mater -  cheeky "doppelganger" school photography, and paradoxical visions of atheist Jim in heaven.Teachers' nicknames, tragically unfortunate pupils, and "why me?" thoughts also flood Hobson's mind - underpinned by the optimistic words of Lennon's famous song "Imagine".

Jim Sweeney-  As creator of the Trademarked MIKE sports character, I'm known as the MIKE Maker. What -- or who -- is MIKE? Mike's a witty, alter-ego sports entertainment character destined to deliver unexpected fun, engagement, content and creativity to fans. Who owns MIKE? I do, with my wife of 38 years. Together, we have personally financed and own all of MIKE's animation, illustration, music, web site development, podcast production, marketing and travel. Legally, we are completely unencumbered. Developing, cultivating and creating MIKE content is my full time gig. Goal for MIKE - The ultimate goal is for MIKE to become the first ever universal animated brand to transcend all sports as a global entertainment icon. We're talking Spongebob, Mickey Mouse and Bart Simpson with an international following. Not only is a microphone's image universally acknowledged, but MIKE is the world's third most popular name and is easily translated into most languages. MIKE competitors - There are none. His straightforward design speaks of him being the "ultimate talking head" on sports. The only other animated sports brand with any media credibility is Cletus, FOX Sports' transformer robot. FOX execs have admitted that Cletus is football specific, and they forgot to design Cletus to talk. How do I envision a partner utilizing MIKE? offer one of its many sponsorship partners the opportunity to align with MIKE and incorporate witty, MIKE hosted cartoon shorts. green light a short show in which MIKE - in the Space Ghost vein - interviews real life sports celebrities. Remember, Space Ghosts earned nearly $1.5 Billion in syndication. transform a standard microphone to morph into my cartoon MIKE as a creative means to promote a concert, event or theater performance or interact with its on-line talent. use MIKE as an animated character personality in his own studio. In his already animated shorts, MIKE already pontificates and entertains on things witty, funny or clever. The MIKE studio is specifically designed with plenty of studio screens to house sponsor marks, messages and logos.                 Can I see MIKE anywhere in the digital space? Yes, over the past few years, MIKE has appeared in 900+ sports blogs and he has "authored" 40 sports comic books in his series which appears on Amazon. The brand is currently monetized via affiliate relationships with NFL Shop, MLB Shop, NBA Store, NHL Shop, Sports Memorabilia and Fanatics. Is MIKE currently animated? Describing how Mike the Cartoon sports character came, about makes fascinating listening. Jim's 'property' has enjoyed an incredible start in digital media, despite only been going for a few years. In addition to penning 900 + blogs, Jim has published 40 MIKE Sport Comic Books. Here Jim steps aside and offers tips for listeners who are wondering what they could do next as such he offers a great advice. Best About Sports is a book Jim wrote and says it's informative and witty. Fans not will only enjoy the humour, but also learn something new about sports history. Plus, the unique sports comics that accompany each chapter cleverly capture the essence of the featured player, team, coach, play, sports expression, or in this case, what Jim finds best about sports. Dave talks Maryland hoops, the future of sports information work in a SnapChat world, and how to foster an ideas driven office culture.   Introduction: Hey everyone and welcome to the All-Star Leader Podcast, where together we learn about leadership from the best and brightest, and keep it fun by connecting it to our passion for sports! I'm your host Daniel Hare, and today we are talking with the Commissioner of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Dave Haglund. Dave is in his fifth year at the GNAC after serving in the same role at the Cascade Collegiate Conference, and prior to that spent a combined 27 years in media relations at the University of Maryland and Fresno State University. This is Dave Haglund. Dave thanks so much for coming on the show! Interview Questions: So I don't think we've talked about this before, but if my timing is right I was on the basketball staff at Oklahoma and you were at Maryland when we played in 2001 in Cole Fieldhouse. Maryland won in a very good, rare out-of-conference February game. What do you remember about that one?! First year Maryland went to the Final Four; Juan Dixon was scoreless in the first half, changed shoes and led Now that we have that out of the way, let's start at the beginning. You grew up in Portland; so you're back in your hometown. What was it like growing up there and what were some of your early interactions with the sports world? Grew up an Oregon State fan; Portland Timbers were big and he went to some of those playoff games; and then Trailblazers were big as well Always devoured the sports page; after high school got a sports clerk job at a local newspaper The Oregon Journal which launched his career You went to Oregon State for college; what was that experience like and how did it move you closer to the career you ultimately decided on? The ability to make connections were big, which led to more opportunities; Oregon Journal editor called the Oregon State SID and helped Dave get a job there as a student Big round table in the Oregon State SID room where Dave worked; and Ralph Miller (OSU men's basketball coach) would use that table and Dave's chair to talk to the media after games How did you wind up at Fresno State? Who had an impact on you during your time there and how? What did you learn from a leadership standpoint during your time at Fresno State that still impacts you today. Scott Johnson was assistant SID at Oregon State and got hired at Fresno State as the head SID; offered Dave a job, and he had a job from Oregon State upon graduation as well Three coaches: men's soccer coach Jose Elgorriaga helped him with his confidence; baseball coach Bob Bennett taught him hard work and standing up for your program; football coach Jim Sweeney too. You were at Fresno for a couple of years of Jerry Tarkanian. What can you share about him and his leadership style? Enjoyed working with Tark; easy to work with He was a celebrity coach, and he returned to Fresno which was his hometown after a long, stellar career As a PR person, having someone the media wanted to talk to all the time was great for the job and career There was always controversy that followed him and his program that you had to deal with What drew you to Maryland? Same question: Who had an impact on you during your time there and how? What did you learn from a leadership standpoint during your time at Fresno State that still impacts you today. Leap of faith to move to a new part of the country and a new conference, etc. Hired Ralph Friedgen and went to an Orange Bowl Back to back final fours and a national championship in 2002 As a media relations professional, what were the benefits and challenges of being in the massive media market of Washington, D.C.? Number one benefit was the exposure because of the number of media outlets that were covering you When men's basketball went to the NCAA Tournament, they would take 80 media members along with them Always in the public eye; USA Today, CNN, PBS are right there, so anything a national sports news issue arose, those outlets would want to interview Maryland athletics' staff Let's pause here and drill down on your area of expertise for a moment. Where do you think the traditional area of media relations/sports information is going in the age of SnapChat, Instagram and Facebook? Wishes he was an SID with all the new media Athletic departments and coaches can communicate directly with their fans; this is a great thing! Create your own content in different forms and deliver it, and not need the media Balance between the old and new; the old doesn't totally go away; example is the hardcopy media guides are now gone You left Maryland to take the Commissioner position at the Cascade Conference. Can you talk a little about the motivations behind that move out of major Division I athletics and also out of media relations? Who are a few of the Cascade schools so our audience has some frame of reference? Always thought the Maryland time was temporary and would want to go back home Took a risk by leaving Division I and taking on a commissioner role of an NAIA league Was a one-man band and worked out of his home Was able to bring several national championships to the Portland area 11 institutions in three states: Oregon, Washington and Idaho; supportive presidents and good ADs; Oregon Tech won the men's basketball national championship (Daniel asks about future of NAIA) – they have lost 50+ schools to NCAA Division II in recent years but this has slowed; and Dave thinks there is a place for the NAIA; they are at 240 or 250 schools right now. Then we stole you away at the GNAC in 2011; talk about taking over that role and some of the challenges you've faced. The vast footprint: Alaska, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Alaska; plus Canada; there's a lot of travel and air travel There was only one postseason championship at the time, and he added baseball, softball and soccer Small college football in the west is very challenging; there just aren't many schools playing; GNAC has five members and plays a double round robin Next year, men's women's basketball championship will be in Alaska this year The air/long-trip leagues are financially challenging because it really is a cost of living increase to compete at the same level Something I like to ask all our guests who have worked in conference offices: how do you go about getting individual schools to put their own best interest aside for the greater good of the conference? (if at all?!) Teamwork; everyone matters ADs have an understanding of what it takes to make the conference work; they are collegial and know there are times when what's good for the group might not be good for them as an individual school, and they are okay with that. Audience question from John Owen: How do you communicate so your team feels welcome to talk to you and bring new ideas? (from email list daniel@allstarleaderpodcast.com) Keep an open door; pop into people's offices and shoot the breeze; when you're relaxed and talking about what's going on, new ideas will come that are worthy Five rapid fire questions Name one trait or characteristic you look for when you hire someone. Work ethic and desire What habit has been key to your success? Underpromise and overdeliver Most important app or productivity tool? iPhone and Dropbox Most influential leader you've personally been around? Debbie Yow (N.C. State AD) One sentence of advice for emerging leaders? Don't remain in your comfort zone too long. GNAC happenings Four final fours in 2016; three teams reached the national championship; Western Washington won the women's soccer national championship Women in Sports Career Seminar – Saturday, April 8th, Portland (3rd annual) 10-15 panelists of women working in sports industry Open to high school/college students interested in pursuing a career in sports WOU Director of Sports Performance Cori Metzgar (Episode 3 guest) has been a panelist @davehaglundgnac on Twitter; @gnacsports Thank Yous/Acknowledgements: Antioch Live/Clear Day Media Group – music More here. Jim Sweeney is our guest for today's podcast and he will talk about his successful company and what he is doing now. You can listen to the show at http://rockyourretirement.libsyn.com/jim-sweeney-mike-rafone-episode-28 Jim Sweeney: Mike Rafone Cartoon Character Jim Sweeney sold his successful company, Sweeney Sales, in May 2005. So what is he doing now?  He has created his Trademarked MIKE cartoon sports character to become the first universal animated brand in sports. Besides penning 800 blogs, Jim has published 38 MIKE Sports Comic Books. All the eBooks contain clever sports comics and light-hearted commentaries on unique observations about sports. The 58-year-old Sweeney still participates in sports (slowly!) as a masters athlete and serves as Head of USA for FIMBA – the governing body for masters basketball tournaments around the world. ADVENTURE AND TRAVEL Jim Sweeney was a 1980 recipient of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the United States' top collegiate basketball player under 6'0″ tall. He was the captain of the Boston College Eagles. He was nominated by Boston College as a Rhodes Scholar candidate. Raised in Trenton, New Jersey, he attended the Lawrenceville School before receiving an athletic scholarship to Boston College. Following his 1980 graduation from BC, Jim Sweeney played basketball briefly in Sweden. He returned to the States, got married to his sweetheart, and spent the following years as a manufacturer's rep in the computer industry. While still in his forties, Sweeney and his wife Maura closed their computer firm to launch New Vision Entertainment, a Florida-based LLC focused on the development and promotion of entertainment properties that positively impact culture. Jim Sweeney: Mike Rafone: Jim wanted to do something totally different from a creative nature that would be fun and exciting and had the potential to positively impact others.  He created an animated cartoon character named Mike Rafone.. SPIRIT & SOUL  Yes, this is the same Jim Sweeney that was involved in a scandal about 35 years ago. He tells us how he got through that scandal (it still comes up even today) and how with the help of his friends, his family, and his faith, the scandal made him a better man. He had testified as a witness in the 1978–79 Boston College basketball point shaving scandal in which members of organized crime schemed to control the outcomes of several games. Jim was neither charged nor offered immunity in exchange for his testimony. Jim says that everyone makes mistakes. The best way to get through something is to move forward and not dwell on the past.  Good advice, Jim. HEALTH & SEX At age 58, Jim still wakes up with the sun.  He plays basketball several times a week and travels to other countries to play in masters level tournaments. Jim inspires and motivates others and lets them know that they, too, can do something totally outside-the-box. Todays guest entrepreneur joining us on the Steve Jobs inspired podcast is a lady with a connection to a previous episode. If you go back and listen to episode 473 of Join Up Dots you will hear an open and frank discussion with Jim Sweeney. During the recording he spoke passionately about his amazing wife and the work she was doing, so its with delight that we now have her on the show. So lets give you a bit of background formation about her, and what she is doing on life. From the early part of her career she was in the words of one of her friend “Groomed” for success. She was setting out on a path towards being a lawyers As she says “The master plan (which certainly sounds good on its surface) would entail my following in my late grandfather's footsteps to become a New Jersey lawyer. For a girl born in the late '50s, it was somewhat ambitious and even professionally affirming. There were just two problems: 1) I didn't want to practice law and 2) I didn't want to live in New Jersey. Though I could have easily articulated the second (negative) goal, the first negative goal was a bit more complex. Why didn't I want to practice law? Simply put, I had neither passion nor vision for the profession. When laid against my inward leanings, it translated to me as a solitary, rigid and uninspired career. Despite trying to please those around me and stay true to the instruction manual that would get me to this supposed life goal as a New Jersey lawyer, I became increasingly dis-spirited. The more I moved through the law school process the more “dead” I felt.” And haven't most of us felt that at one time or another, simply going through the motions. Waiting for each weekend to free us up from the life we are living? Well today's guest has done just that and now calls herself the Ambassador of Happiness, on a mission to help ignite the worlds on personal happiness. She has books, podcasts, courses and the worlds biggest smile to share everywhere? So does she think that she could have gone through the Law degree and found some kind of happiness in the role, or did she need to do a 360. And where is her greatest source of happiness now she is surrounded by it? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only super happiness entrepreneur Maura Sweeney

Jim Sweeney Creator of Mike Raffone Jim Sweeney is a 57 year old guy who is living his dream. His dream is bringing a cartoon character to life, that has been living rent free in his head since he was born, to fruition. Jim Sweeney creator of Mike Raffone, aka Michael Anthony Raffone, aka Mike Raffone (pronounced microphone), or simply Mike. He's really just a figment of Jim's imagination that he's brought to life. Share Episode 62 on Twitter Jim lives in Clearwater, Florida and has been at the "Mike Gig" full time for the past five years. He has figured out how to monetize it and loves everything he does. He loves what he does. He looks forward to getting up everyday, sitting down at his computer and creating content that is "Mike" related. Mike Raffone is the ultimate talking head on sports. Mike Raffone is his name and he is actually a microphone. He's trademarked as well. Jim went through the trademark process when Mike was introduced because he thought that he would get pushback from ESPN, Fox Sports or CBS Sports, but noone challenged him. The Story Behind Mike Raffone Mike was born in Jim's "DNA" 57 years ago. Jim has always thought like Mike. He's always thought about sports through the lens of the Mike character. Mike is witty, clever, he loves sports, he loves words and he loves humor. When Jim was watching sports, he would always find himself saying "why didn't that ref call that" or "why doesn't that announcer say that" or "why doesn't that sports writer write about that"? If you are a sports fan you can most likely relate, right? One day Jim's wife told him to quit muttering about that stuff and do something about it. It didn't happen five years ago when he formally and officially launched into his new career as the content creator for Mike, it was a gradual process. Jim started his journey like so many of us by getting the confidence to begin, but would stall only because of second guessing himself. He would wonder how he was going to do this and when should he pull the trigger to really launch Mike character. It took Jim going through this process that lasted a couple years before he finally got "the moxy" to say he was going to go cold turkey and that he was just going to do this. Jim decided to not only get started, but to do it right, with passion and he was just going to make it happen. During the interview, Jim took on the persona of Mike Raffone as I asked questions about his website. I went from interviewing Jim Sweeney Creator of Mike Raffone, to interviewing Mike Raffone himself. It was a lot of fun as we discussed some of the things on his bucket list. Mike Raffone's big dream is to be the first animated character to win an ESPY award. It doesn't stop there though as Mike would also like to appear on ESPN Sports Center. Jim broke character for a bit as we talked about appearing on Mike and Mike in the morning because he, Jim, would probably appear as Jim Sweeney Creator of Mike Raffone so he could help explain what Mike Raffone is all about. Jim's goal with Mike is to get a licensing deal with the network. The network could help find a sponsor and help pay the exorbitant cost of animating Mike. Mike could be an online celebrity, as an animated character, bantering back and forth, joking or reporting on sports with real celebrities. Jim believes that Mike will be on Sports Center one day talking back and forth with show hosts. Insight into Mike Raffone While Mike is always fair-minded, he has no problem talking about what he feels even if it might be upsetting to some sports fans. For instance, in one of Mike's 2 Cent Tuesday's Sports Blogs,Mike called Kobe one of the big elephants in the arena. Mike petitions Kobe Bryant to follow the lead of another Laker great, Elgin Baylor, and just retire. Even though it was the beginning of the season and Kobe has had a fabulous career, the first four games of the season were terrible for the future hall of famer.

My guest today on the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is an man who is perfect for a show like this one. As he made the brave decision a few years ago to leave his successful corporate gig and follow his heart. He made the decision to set out to discover what would bring him personal satisfaction in life, play to his strengths, and then turn it into income by creating the Trademarked MIKE cartoon sports character. MIKE is an animated microphone with a sharp wit, humorous turn of phrase, and the go to guy if your TV programme wants a different approach to interviewing live celebrities and sports figures. But of course he is so much more than just a cartoon character, as within his small body he holds the dream, passions and future for our guest all rolled into one. But like all guests today's started his career as far away as is possible from where he is today, surrounded by the green grass, and bright lights of American sports stadiums and TV studios. Beginning his career as the Corporate Merchandise & Import Manager for CVS & Rite Aid) he spent his time travelling around the Far East importing consumer electronic & personal care appliance merchandise, before later setting up his own company in Sweeney Sales inc. He hustled, travelled and worked hard in an environment that seems from the outside a strange fit for this creative guy. But maybe that wasn't the case and this was the period of key learning that without it, MIKE the character could never have been born. So was he always entrepreneurial in spirit, but truly needed that thing that played to his own creative side to get going in life? And of course its great to have a fun and creative idea, but how do you keep the buzz when things don't go your way? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only entrepreneur himself Mr Jim Sweeney.

Buddy Morris Interview Growing up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, my heroes were Pittsburgh sports figures.  The Steelers were almost surreal to me as a fan and other than attending Jack Lambert's Football Camp and training camps in Latrobe, Pennsylvania; they were untouchable.  The University of Pittsburgh Football players were in fact more than just giants of the game, they were part of our culture.  Guys like Jim Sweeney, Bill Fralic, and Mark Stepnoski were friends of my older cousins and in some way, almost like big brothers to all of us playing pick-up football in the cobblestone streets of the Iron City.  Dan Mario played baseball for my grandfather up until his junior year at Pitt. And, all of us "yinzers" were heartbroken when Tony Dorsett started wearing a start on his helmet and played for America's team.  The icon who prepared most of those men was why, in a round-a-bout way, I became a strength and conditioning coach myself.  Buddy Morris has always been someone who most of us looked up to.  Even when he told you things you didn't want to hear about training and physical preparation.  Coach X became a staple of elitefts.com and videos of when Dave and Jim visited he and Mylo when they were coaching the Cleveland Browns still rank as some of the top learning experiences. If there is one thing that is evident is that Buddy Morris was meant to be a strength coach.  Buddy makes no apologies for being who he is. He has the knowledge and the experience to validate what he believes, while always questioning whether there is a better way to do things. Buddy knows it was, is, and will never be about him. "Buddy's one of the All-Timers, he helped start this profession," explains Joe Kenn, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach with the Carolina Panthers. "Nobody talks enough about Buddy being one of the pioneers." With over 3 decades of experience, no one can deny Buddy Morris' impact on the strength and conditioning profession and the athletes he has coached. American Football Physical Preparation was written to expose football players, physical preparation and sport coaches, to the concepts of one of the original coaches of physical preparation for football, Buddy “Coach X” Morris. In this book, you will find information regarding the theory, methodology, bioenergetics, biodynamics, and bio-motor abilities, as they pertain to American Football. This information is unique, as it explains why football is an alactic-aerobic sport, which bio-motor abilities are most important, how biodynamics play into exercise selection, and how each team, side of the ball, position, and even individual, needs their own specific programming. In the final section of the book, you will find practical examples of training cycles, monthly blocks, training weeks, and individual workouts, all tailored for five distinct training groups: Line, Combo, Skill, Quarterback, and Kicker/Punter. As a whole, American Football Physical Preparation will give all readers an exclusive look, and insight, of how the training process is organized, programmed and implemented, in a large team setting for American Football. Buddy Morris is a strength and conditioning legend, bodybuilder, and rehab specialist who will run our Performance Center. He has over 31 years of experience in the strength and conditioning field. He has worked as the Head Strength Coach for the NFL Cleveland Browns as well as the Head Strength Coach for the University of Pittsburgh for 20+ years. He has coached 5 NFL Hall of Famers and trains NFL players year round. He is known nationwide and has contributed to numerous fitness magazines, books, and articles. Energy Policy: What’s Next? T.J. Glauthier, Former Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy James Sweeney, Director, Precourt Energy Efficiency Center, Stanford Tony Knowles, Chair, National Energy Policy Institute; Former Governor, Alaska The United States does not have a national energy policy. In this panel convened by Climate One three experts long involved in the US energy debate conspire to shape their own. The plan: steadily increasing the cost of gasoline at the pump, replace diesel with liquefied natural gas for heavy trucking, harvest cost-effective energy efficiency opportunities, and boost the production of shale gas.“These are not new issues,” says former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles. “Unfortunately, I think Tom Friedman said it best: ‘Our national energy policy is more the sum total of our best lobbyists, rather than our best wisdom.’” Politics, not science or economics, has shaped our energy policy, Knowles says. A proposal recently put forward by the California Secure Transportation Energy Partnership, where Stanford University’s Jim Sweeney is a member, would add a penny per month to the state’s gas tax for 10 years. Tony Knowles cited a similar proposal recommended by the National Energy Policy Institute, which would increase the federal gas tax by $0.08 per gallon each year for 20 years with the goal of reducing oil consumption by 1.5 million barrels per day. Knowles and T.J. Glauthier, a former Deputy Secretary at the US Department of Energy, advocate for retrofitting the country’s heavy trucking fleet to run on domestic liquefied natural gas (LNG). “We’ve got truck stops all over the country. If we spent some money helping build out the natural gas refueling parts of those truck stops, and provide some help to trucking companies for the conversions, there’s a huge benefit,” says Glauthier. Jim Sweeney, Director of Stanford’s Precourt Energy Efficiency Center, emphasizes the abundant opportunity that exists for consumers to save money with energy efficiency improvements. We just have to get the incentives right. “People talk about those as the ‘low-hanging fruit.’ Unfortunately, some of that fruit has been low-hanging for decades now and hasn’t been picked, which means there’s a reason,” he says. Knowles and Glauthier also recommend that shale gas be a part of the energy mix. “It’s great for the American public, it’s great for the energy sector, to have natural gas supplies that are much larger, and they’re all domestic,” says Glauthier. This program was recorded in front of a live audience at the Commonwealth Club of California, San Francisco on April 5th, 2011
