Even though Lisa Mostovoy and her daughters Sasha Fishilevich and Mischa Buck are talking about a serious subject, this episode brings us so much joy. Lisa starts by talking about Kyiv and her childhood. After the war broke out, Lisa and her older daughter Sasha went to Poland to deliver supplies and offer help, even though at times they felt helpless. Sasha Fishilevich, Lisa's oldest daughter, talks about growing up in a home with a strong Ukrainian cultural presence. Mischa Buck, Lisa's youngest, shares her Easter memories. Marta Rubel grew up in Philadelphia to proud Ukrainian parents. Marta speaks fondly of her memories growing up in Philly, but she also remembers the challenges her parents faced after settling here, and always dreaming that they would be able to move back to Ukraine. Watching the 2021 invasion on television, Marta asked herself if she could do more for her country and the community. So, she left her job in publishing and started working for the Ukrainian Catholic Church. What do you know about Ukraine's history? We all know it was once part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), then it wasn't. Ukraine's history is far-reaching and as complex as its geography and the number of languages that are spoken. We set out to find a historian who could provide context about Ukraine and its history. That person is John Vsetecka, an assistant professor at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Is Sex one of your favorite ways to meet people? Sultry midwest feminist and sex-positive realtor Sara Lederach is a mother and wife who had squished herself small to serve others, but everything changes when she opens up her failing marriage, gets on Tinder, and meets the love of her life, Chuck. So when Sara reveals that she has fully functional diphallia, he rewards her bravery with the ultimate in fantasy fulfillment: a custom DP. Because isn't that what love is, really? Song: ‘Believe in Yourself' (Shirley Gnome) About the Storyteller: Long time Bawdy listener, first time Bawdy story submitter Sara Lederach is an artist, mama and realtor based in Nashville, TN. Sara is a big fan of creatively designed lives, which she feels plays into the spaces we live in and the way we relate to one another. In her free time you can find her hiking, sequestered in her studio with piles of fabric, or digging through dead people's things at estate sales. Being a sex-positive realtor is Sara's of my greatest delights; her first couple of transactions originated in that space. Sara is your go-to if you need exposed beams for suspension play or if you just need more space because your polycule is changing. Introducing Philadelphia Revealed, a new podcast from WHYY. In every episode you’ll learn about an object in the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University and hear a story inspired by it from a First Person Arts storyteller.
Dr. Neil Bardhan is Director of Applied Storytelling at First Person Arts, Executive Director of the Broad Street Review, and founder of Bardhan Consulting. Neil told a great story at MISSION Story Slam 8 (see below) and joined Michael Schweisheimer to discuss storytelling on the podcast.
Bridget O'Neill, of Beacon, has told stories 20 times on The Moth stage and hosts the podcast Keepin' It Real With Bridget O'Neill. Beginning Feb. 10, she will lead a five-week storytelling course at Beahive. What sparked your interest in storytelling? I had the art of storytelling in me from a young age; maybe it's because both my parents are Irish and storytellers. But there was one time, when I was living in New York City, constantly rushing from my recruiting job. One day, I wasn't rushing; something told me to calm down. I said to myself: "I live in this great city and I never slow down to stop and take it all in." It was around the holidays and they had an ice-skating rink at Bryant Park, and I watched the skaters with the music playing over the speakers. I was describing the feeling of watching the skaters and watching people watching the skaters. You have that warm feeling that you can only get at a concert, when you are surrounded by people you don't know but there's a common thread and interest. I say this because I ran from there to get my train, and I got on the wrong train, and I was like, "Oh, shoot, OK, I'll just get off at the next stop." When I did, I heard my name. I look up and it's this guy, Anthony, who I dated in Philly 15 years earlier. He was up there for some hair event. We started talking and he said if you ever come to Philly, there's this thing called "First Person Arts." You get onstage, tell a real story and you have five minutes to do it. I didn't end up going to Philly because I found The Moth in New York City. What is The Moth? It's a storytelling venue. Two weeks before each show, they tell you what the theme is. Say, for instance, it's "wheels." I'm thinking, "Oh, yes, I got a story about when I flipped my Volkswagen Bug when I was 19." At the show, they pull names out of a hat. You might not get called, so you have all of this built-up anxiety. But if you get called, it's addicting. Your guard goes down. Once you hear that laughter or that moment of shock, you calm down because then you feel these people are with you. My first time on the stage was pure fear but it turned into one of the happiest moments of my life. What makes a good story? Right off the bat, you have no idea what you're going to hear. You can assume one thing and then it goes somewhere completely different. That element of surprise is my favorite. The other thing, which I think is the art of storytelling, is someone gets onstage and they're telling you a story about something incredibly deep, and you're with them all along the way. A friend of mine calls it, "Punch them and then hug them." I'll give you an example: Someone was talking about watching his house burn. And you're on the edge of your seat, but then he says something quite funny, and you don't expect a funny moment when your house is ablaze. That's a release, right? The audience is invested but you make them snap out of it. That's the balance of any story. Why do you think storytelling is so popular? The great thing is you can have vast age differences or every single gender background, across the board. There's a mom, there's a schoolteacher, there's an electrician, there's an engineer - this is not people's full-time job. You get to be your authentic self, without being judged or measured. Everyone and anyone can do it. There are zero limitations. To me, that's the beauty of it. What mistakes do people make when telling stories? The good thing about The Moth is that you're limited to five minutes; if you have a 10-minute story, you have to kill your darlings. Sometimes people will leave details in when they don't matter. I usually tell people not to go so macro. If you go micro, that's where it gets funny or meatier.

In this week’s episode Kristen checks in with Charlie Keiper from Books Are Fun. His company would typically be found at schools and book fairs all over the area, but with schools closed (and everything else too), they’ve decided to bring Books Are Fun to where we are: Home. With families in quarantine and kids stuck at home, this local business offers fun items to help kids and adults alike learn, have fun, and keep occupied. They have a number of items available for Easter, STEM activities, cookbooks, and lots more. They’ll even deliver personally, right to your house in the Philadelphia area. Please go to www.EastCoastBookFairs.com to order. Contact Charlie with questions at CharlierKeiper@aol.com. Then, Kristen speaks with Jamie Brunson, the Executive Director at First Person Arts. First Person Arts is practicing social distancing like everyone else, but that won’t keep them from being an embracing environment in which people can share their true, personal stories. In direct response to COVID-19, the local, non-profit storytelling organization, is launching a digital memoir from the pandemic called, “Covid Stories.” Covid Stories will help archive the experiences of those in our region during the quarantine, while connecting with others who are coping with isolation. Whatever people are feeling or thinking during this time, First person Arts wants everyone to know that they are not alone, and somehow we’ll get through this together. Submit your own video and audio submissions! The project asks people to sit in front of a camera (or microphone) and share their experience for up to 5 minutes. Beyond “Covid Stories,” First Person Arts will also be implementing a series of digital workshops designed by staff to help people shape their experiences into stories, and teach them how to connect with others through story-sharing. Find more information at FirstPersonArts.org. Just ahead of the Easter holiday, listen as Kristen speaks with Liz Luczyszyn, President of Luv-N-Bunns, a rabbit rescue and placement organization for abandoned bunnies in the Philadelphia area. They work to rescue domestic rabbits from abandoned stray situations, kill shelters, private relinquishments and hoarding cases. Once rescued, the organization provides each ‘bunn’ with a nurturing foster home, proper care, shelter and love, plus all necessary veterinary care, including spay/neuter surgery. Since its inception in 2007, Luv-N-Bunns is responsible for saving the lives of almost 2,000 abandoned rabbits. Help them by purchasing from their Amazon Wish List. Learn more about Luv-N-Bunns and their mission at www.luvnbunns.org.
