Hour 1 with Dorin Dickerson and Adam Crowley: Elliotte Freidman said on his podcast that Kyle Dubas and the Penguins are biding their time before the trade deadline. The Penguins are trying to wait until the last minute to decide if they will buy or sell. Dorin compares the Penguins to the Warriors and they have earned the right to figure it out with more time, like how the Warriors are struggling. The Penguins need a spark. A jolt to change. They need to wake up, but what's the best approach? Typically it's a 'hockey trade' or firing the coach. Is Kyle Dubas being passive or just waiting for the right time to make a move? Jeff Marek, on the same podcast as Freidman, discussed Sidney Crosby's candidacy for the Hart Trophy. Freidman pushed back that the Penguins won't make the playoffs and he won't get it. Should the Steelers sign a stud defensive lineman? They have already spent SO MUCH money on defense, but it's intriguing to add Christian Wilkins. Cornerback is probably the better place to spend money. In 1951, Milton Friedman received the John Bates Clark Medal, a highly prestigious prize given to an American economist under the age of 40 who has made a significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge. As Jennifer Burns points out in her monumental new study of Friedman — the first full-length, archivally researched biography to have been published — the academic economic profession viewed Friedman as a promising young pioneer in the fields of statistics and mathematics at the time. Ironically, at that very moment, Friedman redirected his intellectual interests toward the seemingly outdated and even retrograde studies of the quantity of money, the consumption function, and other ideas outside of the mainstream. For the next two decades, many economists would regard Friedman as, at best, an eccentric and, at worst, a dangerous reactionary. However, as Burns describes in Milton Friedman: The Last Conservative, with the coming of stagflation — the combination of inflation and stagnation — that afflicted the American economy in the early 1970s, and which seemingly was impossible according to the conventional academic wisdom, Friedman came to be perceived a visionary. Over time, his views on capitalism, free markets, and limited regulation came to be adopted by both parties — but his influence was powerful in the Republican Party, where they helped define modern conservatism. In recent years, however, progressives have condemned the Friedman-influenced ideas of neoliberalism. At the same time, “National Conservatives” on the right have embraced the idea of using state power against their enemies in Big Business.  In this podcast discussion, Burns discusses Friedman's life and times and how her biography is also a history of economic thought and development in the twentieth century. She explains why Friedman continues to matter and why some of his more abstract theories fail to adequately explain human behavior and account for the impact of government investment. And she makes the case why the generally conservative Chicago School of Economics, of which Friedman was the most famous representative, was not as hostile to moderation as it has usually been portrayed.

A couple days ago myself, our host Erik Weihenmayer, and maybe 50 others were sitting in an auditorium with our eyes closed. My knees were pressed up against the seat back in front of me. My arms were pinned between the hard wooden armrests. I was not comfortable. However… and I know this may sound a bit out there… buts… minutes later I found myself floating in space. I could no longer feel the pressure points in my knees and arms. I was on my way to a state of hypnosis. I was about to have a conscious conversation with my subconscious mind. Sam and Emma host Gary Gerstle, Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge, to discuss his recent book The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order: America and the World in the Free Market Era. First, Emma and Sam dive into the continued rise of mass shootings over this weekend, the Uvalde Police's continually changing story, Dr. Oz's victory in the PA GOP Senate Primary, and Elon suddenly scrapping his Twitter deal after finding out about Twitter BOTS, but definitely not his crashing Tesla stock. They're then joined by Professor Gerstle as they work through the concept of political orders as these prolonged eras of dominant ideologies, with the two that he largely covers being the New Deal political order, lasting from FDR's reign up until the ‘60s or so, and the Neoliberal Order, burgeoning in the ‘70s and lasting up until the end of Obama's presidency, looking at these two orders in contrast, with the former compelling the right to assimilate into a democratic socialist ideology, and the latter seeing a Clinton-lead democratic party assimilating into corporate liberalism and deregulation. Next, they get into the factors that drive the emergence of new orders, starting as a modest movement of political organizations and actors, before networks of donors, constituents, think tanks, and policy networks and political actors arise around it as it proves itself as a viable political system. They then look to the crises that left the vacuum for these orders to step in, with the 1930s Great Depression marking the largest capitalist crisis in US History, and the ‘70s recession occurring alongside rising racial tensions, US imperialism, and a reemergence of international industrial competitors seeing US Capital suddenly threatened from all sides. Sam, Emma, and Professor Gerstle then walk through the evolution of political orders and how one took issue and influence from its priors, first looking to FDR's desire to create a new form of liberalism, one that puts everyday Americans in a position to actually enjoy their freedom, before Freidman and Hayek come around and reject his appropriation of liberalism, but still looking to government as a corporate facilitator, particularly with the role of the military in ensuring the safety and freedom of markets worldwide. After covering the role of the fall of the USSR and Clinton's assimilation to neoliberalism, Sam, Emma, and Professor Gerstle walk through our contemporary moment as the neoliberal order stalls, and the difference between a fight between a far-right and a progressive left and the single-camp transitions of previous orders. When I was a kid, I watched a documentary that influenced my young brain immensely, and it was called “Free To Choose.” The original 1980, 10-part television series was by the great Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman. In academic circles, Friedman was chiefly associated with the renaissance of the role of money in inflation and the consequent renewed understanding of the instrument of monetary policy. For his studies in these subjects, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1976. Yet it was the “Free To Choose” documentary, as well as his many subsequent public appearances via lectures and on TV, that helped bring into the mainstream the meaning of freedom, and why it is so vital to economic prosperity and social prosperity. The “happy warrior” approach that Friedman took, as well as his passion for ideas, are kept alive by the Free To Choose Network, a global media nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Friedman's work, as well as other outstanding scholars such as Thomas Sowell. Directing that effort is Free To Choose Network President and CEO Robert Chatfield. At the recent FreedomFest Conference, Chatfield sat down with me to reminisce about Freidman, his wife and intellectual partner Rose, Friedman's insatiable intellectual curiosity, the history of the “Free To Choose” documentary and how it came to fruition, and even how Milton Friedman, at age 90, learned how to do stomach crunches! The understandable reaction of families who lost a loved one are analyzed from a psychoanalytic perspective from the lens of Survivor Guilt. Drawing from his studies with families of Holocaust victims, Profesor Juni presents the dynamics of coping mechanisms, which usually results in attributing blame to others, to oneself, to God, or to the victim. Guilt is seen as intrinsically ties to such coping. Rabbi Kivelevitz challenges this view, suggesting that mourning does not seem to entail guilt as a rule. The discussants then tackle the mutual hostility evident between families who have lost loved ones serving in the IDF and the Haredim or Arabs who do not serve. Juni sees much of the hostilities as engendered by guilt which is projected unto the “other,” explaining that the other is a necessary target which helps us adjust to tragedy and difficulties. Kivelevitz then infers from this formulation that efforts to bridge the divide via rational discourse would then be doomed to failure. Juni then proceeds to apply his psycho-economic perspective of Survivor Guilt (based on Freidman's Depletion Guilt and Baumeister's Inequity Guilt theories) to make sense of the reactions of survivors toward families of victims. Based on an initial attitude of finite resources, people unknowingly maintain this attitude inappropriately toward random and unexplainable mishaps, unconsciously expecting that misfortunes are finite in number; this means that when others suffer tragedies, they will then be spared from misfortunes. In essence, this results in an unconscious perception of relief and gain from other's tragedies. Inevitably, this elicits guilt, which then may lead to displacing the guilt and transforming it into strife and antipathy. Kivelevitz capitalizes on this perspective to explain the strained dynamics which mourners often sense when some visitors arrive to Shiva to console them – especially when they visitors hardly know the mourners. The episode ends noting that the divisions within our community are determined by insidious psychological dynamics which are not likely to disappear anytime soon........ Doctor Samuel Juni is one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. He has published groundbreaking original research in seventy different peer reviewed journals, and is cited continuously with respect by colleagues and experts in the field who have built on his theories and observations. Samuel Juni studied in Yeshivas Chaim Berlin under Rav Yitzchack Hutner, and in Yeshiva University as a Talmid of Rav Joseph Dov Soloveitchick. Professor Juni is a prominent member of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, and has regularly presented addresses to captivated audiences. Associated with NYU since 1979, Juni has served as Director of MA and PhD programs, all the while heading teams engaged in important research. Professor Juni's scholarship on aberrant behavior across the cultural, ethnic, and religious spectrum is founded on psychometric methodology and based on a psycho-dynamic psychopathology perspective. He is arguably the preeminent expert in Differential Diagnostics, with each of his myriad studies entailing parallel efforts in theory construction and empirical data collection from normative and clinical populations. Professor Juni created and directed NYU's Graduate Program in Tel Aviv titled Cross-Cultural Group Dynamics in Stressful Environments. Based in Yerushalayim, he collaborates with Israeli academic and mental health specialists in the study of dissonant factors and tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and those within the Orthodox Jewish community, while exploring personality challenges of second-generation Holocaust survivors.
