Chandra Levy, an intern in Washington, D.C., disappeared in May 2001. Her case made headlines when her voicemail was checked- a message from Gary Condit checking on her was heard. Condit represented California's 18th Congressional district in the house of Representatives. His extramarital affair with the young woman would cause a world sensation of press coverage. He was ruled out as a suspect- but never could get over the damage to his political aspirations. Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic pushed an agenda of nationalism and promoted xenophobia toward other ethnicities in Yugoslavia. In the 1990s, some 100,000 Bosnian Muslims and Croation civilians were murdered. Some 50,000 children and women were raped. Mass killing sites are still being discovered today. In 2001, the Chandra Levy case captured the entire nation and brought lots of unwanted attention on congressman Gary Condit, which many believed to be responsible for Chandra's disappearance. Even though it's been 2 decades since we first heard of Chandra's mysterious vanishing, Amy and Chris bring you recent developments in the case, as well as catch you up with everything you need to know. Here's some background, Chandra Levy was a Washington D.C. intern who disappeared in May 2001. After her disappearance, her affair with Gary Condit came to light, and he became public enemy number one, even costing him re-election in 2002. As investigation continued, another suspect, an El Salvadorian immigrant Ingmar Guandique, came to light and was even taken to trial and sentenced for the crime. So case closed right? Well, the charges against Ingmar were dropped in 2015, and he was ultimately deported in 2017. So in an official sense, Chandra's case remains unsolved, but was the true murderer actually let go? California congressman Gary Condit was never a suspect, but 11 weeks of saying nothing to the police after your mistress goes missing is not cool any way you slice it. This is the non-true crime look at the disappearance of Chandra Levy and how, in a post Bill and Monica world, the personal lives of politicians could be their undoing. *THIS EPISODE CONTAINS DESCRIPTIONS OF VIOLENCE, DOMESTIC ABUSE, ASSUALT AND SEXUALT ASSSUALT THAT SOME LISTENERS MAY FIND DISTURBING* On May 1st, 2001, Chandra Ann Levy disappeared without a trace. The 24-year-old had recently wrapped up a paid internship with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, DC but was due to return to her home in Modesto, California in time for May Graduation. But this did not come to pass as five days later, on May 6th, Levy's family would alert the Metropolitan Police Dept. of the District of Columbia (MPD) from Modesto that they had not heard from her. The police responded by carrying out a welfare check on Chandra's apartment which resided in Dupont Circle but found nothing. Further investigating and from Levy's own father, it would be learned that Chandra had been having an affair with a then U.S congressman Gary Condit. This information was corroborated by Chandra's aunt. But beneath this story of what sounds like a tale of scandal, seedy secrets and murder, something that of which Hollywood itself could spin, beats the cold heart of truth. The truth of a truly horrifying investigation riddled with errors of judgement, media frenzy and trials by both court and television alike, in Today's episode we will bring the lens back into focus on to that young woman who vanished twenty years ago and later be found 6 km from her home dead, in the Murder of Chandra Levy. This episode explores the life of Lori Klausutis, a vivacious 28-year-old who worked in a tiny office in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., as the constituent service coordinator for then-congressman Joe Scarborough. A devout Catholic who wore a “Precious Little Feet” lapel pin, a symbol for the anti-abortion movement. Klausutis was a well-liked woman who served as president of the local Young Republicans club and sang in the church choir. The podcast, relying on detailed police reports and interviews with people directly involved in the case, describes how on the afternoon of July 19, 2001, Klausutis was feeling fidgety and ill moments before she collapsed from an undiagnosed heart condition. While the police found no sign of a struggle or foul play, her death soon spurred speculation and conspiracy theories — many of them pushed by left-wing bloggers who demanded that Scarborough be subjected to the same scrutiny as then-Democratic congressman Gary Condit, who had been having an affair with missing intern Chandra Levy. The rumors that his wife had also been having an affair with her boss infuriated T.J. Klausutis, who reveals Scarborough didn’t even recognize his wife when they encountered each other. “It’s complete nonsense,” he says. “It’s just disgusting.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Chandra Levy was a young intern at the FBI's Washington headquarters when she vanished in 2000. Her alleged romantic relationship with U.S. Rep. Gary Condit put her disappearance in the national headlines as suspicions swirled around the congressman. Levy's remains were found in a DC park a year later. Chandra;s mother wants the case reopened with new DNA testing technology used. Cold Case Research Institute Director Sheryl McCollum joined the discussion, noting that new touch DNA technology could help solve the case. Prosecutors however are reportedly not willing to spend funds to use the latest crime-solving technology, such as touch DNA or the M-Vac system, to help solve Chandra’s case. Susan said when she asked prosecutors in Washington, D.C., to retest the evidence in Chandra’s case, they told her “it’s all been done.”
Chandra Levy had her life together. She was an intern at the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was just a few days shy of graduating with a master’s degree in public administration. She had dreams of working for the FBI. Maybe the CIA. So when she suddenly went missing in early May of 2001, her parents were alarmed. Their alarm swelled when they learned that Chandra’d been having an affair with Congressman Gary Condit. Was Condit to blame for Chandra’s disappearance? Had he done something to her? Despite a damn good alibi, suspicion enveloped Condit. In the winter of 2000, two men terrorized Wichita, Kansas. Over a short period, their random crimes escalated. First they robbed a man. Then they shot a woman. Then, they raped and terrorized a group of five, twenty-something friends. The men murdered four of the five friends. The lone survivor lived through the ordeal when the killers’ bullet deflected off her barrette. She played dead, then sought help. Ultimately, her testimony helped put the men behind bars. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Who Killed Chandra Levy?” Washington Post investigative series by Sari Horwitz, Scott Higham, Sylvia Moreno Season 38, Episode 48 of 20/20 “Chandra Levy,” Wikipedia “Gary Condit,” Wikipedia In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “The Wichita Horror” by Denise Noe, Crime Library “True Crime: The Wichita Massacre” by Kara Kovalchik, MentalFloss.com “High court overturns death penalty sentences for Carr brothers, upholds conviction” by Sherman Smith, The Topeka Capital-Journal “Supreme Court restores death sentences in heinous Kansas murder spree” by Richard Wolf, USA Today
May 1st, 2001. Washington, D.C. Chandra Levy, an intern in Washington, D.C. was an independent woman with big dreams. As someone who was very interested in politics and law enforcement, the move from California to the nation's capital was exciting for her. In April of 2001, she lost her intern position with the Federal Bureau of Prisons because her eligibility had expired six months before. Because of this she had no real reason to stay in D.C. Chandra started the process of moving back. On May 6th, though, her parents reported her missing. The authorities were informed that Chandra had been involved in a relationship with Gary Condit, a married U.S. congressman. Did he harm or kill Chandra to prevent her from leaving? In May of 2002, her remains were found in Rock Creek Park. As the investigation evolved, two suspects stood out; congressman Gary Condit and a 20 year old man from El Salvador named Ingmar Guandique who had admitted to attacking other women in the same area. At the time, this case received massive coverage due to Chandra's affair with Gary Condit and his possible involvement in her death.
Chandra Levy was a graduate student from the University of Southern California working at an internship in Washington D.C., when her life was tragically cut short in 2001. After details of Levy’s affair with California congressman Gary Condit surfaced, the press began asking questions about the mysterious details surrounding Levy’s disappearance and the flawed investigation that followed.

John and Patsy Ramsey, Richard Jewell, and Gary Condit are names everyone has heard as they were all on trial in the court of public opinion. These cases were spread throughout the media and, even though there was never an arrest made in any, the public had judged the accused. L. Lin Wood was the lawyer representing these individuals as they fought for their reputations. An expert in First Amendment litigation and management of the media in high-profile cases, Wood has been referred to as "the attorney for the damned." On this episode of The Paralegal Voice, Vicki Voisin has the opportunity to interview L. Lin Wood about the benefits and difficulties in representing high-profile individuals and how a paralegal can be most effective in these cases. Wood began his career in defamation cases when he represented Richard Jewell in the Centennial Olympic Park bombing case and has since represented the Ramseys, Gary Condit, attorney Howard Stern, and many others in whom the media took a particular interest. He describes how fighting against the media can be different than a regular plaintiff and how he protects his clients from public accusations. He explains that there are additional issues when dealing with a public figure including when to sue for slander and how to control what his clients say to the media. In terms of paralegals working in libel cases, there are three qualities Wood expects: acute knowledge about the case, understanding of the situation, and ability to keep track of a wealth of information coming from the media. L. Lin Wood is an Atlanta attorney who has developed a national reputation during his more than 36 years as a trial lawyer focusing on civil litigation, representing individuals and corporations as plaintiffs or defendants in tort and business cases involving claims of significant damage.
