Leslie C. Smith and SMA (Ret.) We have created a podcast that addresses non-combat deaths in the military. According to a congressional research service dated May 2021, from 2006-to 2021, 75% of military deaths were non-combat. Meaning only 25% of deaths happened due to a combat situation. 93% of these non-combat deaths happened on US Soil. Suicides, homicides, homicides by suicide, neglect, overdoses, and fatalities don't make sense. So what the hell is happening in the US military??? We will talk to Gold Star families. Marlyn Shipley joins Tim for a special Memorial Day episode where she tells her own story. Marlyn is a Gold Star Mother, which means she lost one of her children in service to the U.S. military. Marlyn's son Michael was a specialist in the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne. He died on December 12, 1985 when the plane that he and 247 other fellow troops were aboard, crashed in Gander, Newfoundland. Marlyn talks about what Memorial Day means to her, about the life of a Gold Star mother, about her son Michael. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Gold_Star_Mother_auphonic.mp3 One of the most touching and gripping traditions when it comes to the American military started in Cleveland, Ohio during the First World War. Robert Queisser was the father of two sons who were serving the military in Europe at that time. To help him cope with the worry a parent has when his son is at war, and to help his wife in the same way, he came up with an idea. He created a banner called the Blue Star Flag. He even patented it. The design featured a blue star, which he said represented hope and pride, on a field of white that was surrounded by a red border. It was 1917, and mothers and fathers across the country liked the idea and demand for the banners exploded. The first flags were handmade and hung in the front windows of homes by mothers, to signify that they had sons serving the war effort. If you had more than one son fighting in the war at that time, you had a star for each child. As you might expect, not all of those children survived the war. Time would pass and casualty numbers started to climb. The Women's Committee of the Council of National Defenses had an idea of its own. It suggested that mothers of soldiers killed in the war avoid wearing black mourning clothes. Instead, they said to wear a black band that featured a gold star on their left arms. President Woodrow Wilson began to call these mothers, “Gold Star Mothers.” Before long, some of those Gold Star Mothers started to stitch a gold star over the blue star on those flags in their front windows. If you walked down a street and saw that distinctive flag in the window with a gold star, you knew there was a mother in that house who lost a son in the war. By the time the Second World War happened, those blue and gold star flags became more omnipresent. To give you an idea of just how powerful those flags were, picture this. Alletta Sullivan lived in Waterloo, Iowa. She had five sons, all aboard one ship, the U.S.S. Juneau. All five of those boys died when the ship was sunk on November 13, 1942. Alletta had to replace five blue stars on her flag with five gold stars. For over 100 years now, service flags have been displayed as American troops deployed all around the world in both war and peace time. The Women’s Committee of the Council of National Defenses had an idea of its own. Marlyn Shipley lives in a small town near Pittsburgh and is a Gold Star mother. A slow-mo uncovers the timeframe the officer had to make a split second decision. He should be receiving a medal, instead of accusations of racism. The Raise the Roof event was an amazing success. Stiilpoint came out and I share the heartfelt news clip that captured the event. Truly a testament to the honor and sacrifice the Gold Star Mothers have to face. Lastly, I rip systemic racism apart and show you why this billion dollar industry is the opposite of what the liberal media pretend it is in America today. And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last. (Luke 13:29-30) 325 Church, you who I’m speaking to, tonight, across the nation, if—if you’ve separated yourself from denomination and all the filth and things of this world, and all those things that keeps you in man-made creeds and orders and things like that, you separated yourself: Look up. Get ready. The Fire is going to fall, one of these days. God is going to let Him come, and a sight to behold. Would you be ready when He comes? Would you be ready to go up with Him when He comes? The secret Rapture of the supernatural Bride, “She’ll be made mor-…from mortal to immortality; be changed, in a moment, in a twinkling of eye. We which are alive and remain shall not prevent them which are asleep.” 326 The other day, on Armistice Day, I was standing down there in Tucson. My little boy wanted to see the parade. I was studying, and I didn’t have time to do it. And I had a lot of sick calls and things. So he said, “Daddy, they won’t take me.” He said, “Take me.” 327 I said, “All right.” Brother Simpson, I think he’s here; and his little boy wanted to go. So I jerked them in the car and run down. 328 I stood there on the corner and watched. And after while, I heard, way back in the distance, a muffle coming, “womp, womp,” drums, beating. I stood there. I thought, “Well, these little fellows, they really read all these books about army. They’ll really like that.” I noticed, coming up first was the old World War I tank. There they come up, little bitty fellows like that. There was next come, after that; was the next come after that was the big new tank of the Second World War, the big Sherman tank with a muzzle break on it. Then come the next, and the next, and after while come the Gold Star Mothers. 329 And then, after while, come twelve veterans that’s left, in the whole state of Arizona, from the First World War; twelve veterans. After that, come a float, the unknown soldier, the little white cross. There stood a sailor, marine, and a soldier, standing guard; a little partition on the float. On the other side was an old gray-headed mother, setting with a gold star pinned on her, a little lovely wife crying, her husband was dead; a little ragged boy, his head turned sideways. His daddy was killed. And then behind that come more and more and more, and then to the new army. I stood there. What a sight to behold, but how sad! 330 I thought, “O God, one of these days I’m going to behold another sight.” 331 There’ll come forth a resurrection day, which, “The first will be last; they which are last will be first.” The old prophets will come breaking forth, first, and they see that procession going, marching up in the air. “And we which are alive and remain shall not hinder them which are asleep. For the trumpet of God shall sound, the dead in Christ shall rise first.” We’ll fall right in line with them going in, hallelujah, all down through the age of Luther, Wesley, Methodist, Presbyterian, on down to the last age, who received the Word in their age. God bless you. Get all things ready, and the Fire will fall. 65-1125 - "The Invisible Union Of The Bride Of Christ" Rev. MEMOIRES OF A TRASH HAULER: VIGNETTES FROM THE VIETNAM WAR by Henri L. Bailey, III: Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Retired) Did you ever wonder why Air Force Special Operations Command came into being? The many roles and missions of tactical airlift blossomed and grew during the Vietnam conflict to such an extent that the Air Force later established an Air Force Special Operations Command to retain and use those skills. They were combined with skills developed by Air Rescue and Recovery Service outside of the normal range of rescue. The remarkable capabilities of the Lockheed Hercules aircraft made much of it possible. Of course, the normal mission of moving cargo and people was retained. But added to that were flare dispensing, assault landings and takeoffs, electronic surveillance, forward air control, propaganda dispersion, personnel extraction and recovery, long-range air rescue, air refueling, gunships, helicopter landing pad establishment, and airdrops of both cargo and people at low, normal, and high altitudes. While many activities were accomplished before or after battles, there were occasions when the desperation of the need dictated landing or departure during a battle. This book attempts to capture the essence of these many missions. Henri L. Bailey, III was born in Washington, D.C. in 1938. When he was 3 & ½ years old, his family moved to Maywood, Illinois; where he was raised. He attended grade school in Maywood, high school on the west side of Chicago, and graduated from Roosevelt University in downtown Chicago. He later added master and doctoral degrees. Maywood was unique in that it lost an entire National Guard Tank Battalion at Bataan in the Philippines during WWII. There were 13 Gold Star Mothers with a total of 27 Gold Stars on his block. His home was located about half way between Chicago Midway and Chicago O’Hare airports. Early on, he developed a love for aircraft and a desire to fly. After graduation from Roosevelt, he pursued that desire. Six and one-half years of his life are concerned with flying in or to Southeast Asia in the C-130A Hercules and the C-141A Starlifter aircraft. This book contains some of his most salient experiences during that time. Later in his career, he flew cold war missions in the F-4C and F-4E Phantom tactical fighter. https://www.amazon.com/Memoires-Trash-Hauler-Vignettes-Vietnam/dp/1546279466 https://www.memoiresofatrashhauler.com/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/hbailey3.mp3

Seven out of nine Supreme Court Justices rule that the Bladensburg Peace Cross in Prince George County, Maryland should remain standing. The majority opinion acknowledges that the memorial’s age makes it a part of the community. Learn more at FirstLiberty.org/Briefing. It may have been a long time coming, but the freedom First Liberty Institute secured in The American Legion v. AHA is significant.  You will recall that at issue in the case was the Peace Cross, a World War I monument Gold Star Mothers erected to remember 49 sons of Prince George’s County, Maryland who died in the Great War. That idea came in 1919 and The American Legion dedicated it in 1925. Everything was fine until 2013 when someone decided they were offended at the presence of a cross on public property, ignoring the surrounding memorials to other wars in what is known as Memorial Park.  In June of 2019, the Supreme Court of the United States handed down its decision.  Seven of the nine Justices wrote an opinion, making the decision somewhat difficult to decipher.  But the clear majority of seven Justices ruled that the memorial should stay right where it is. The majority opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, explained the fact that the memorial bears religious symbolism does not mean the memorial must be destroyed or moved to private property.  That is all the more true when memorials age and become a central part of the community itself. “The passage of time,” Justice Alito wrote, “gives rise to a strong presumption of constitutionality.” In our next episode, we will explore what this “strong presumption of constitutionality” means today. The Story Behind the Bladensburg WWI Memorial

The Bladensburg WWI veterans memorial is a symbol of honor and sacrifice of the 49 men from Prince George’s County, Maryland who fought and died in service to their county during WWI. First Liberty is fighting to defend the veterans memorial from destruction. Learn more at FirstLiberty.org/Briefing. They came from many walks of life.  Several were simple laborers.  One was a well-known surgeon.  Another, a legend and past recipient of the Medal of Honor whose heroism in World War I earned him the Distinguished Service Cross. But, they all came from Prince George’s County, Maryland. Educated or not, white or black, rich or poor, their bodies were interred under small grave makers in cemeteries far too distant for their families to ever visit. In 1925, a local post of The American Legion erected the Bladensburg World War I Veterans Memorial to honor 49 men from the county who gave their lives serving in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War I. The Fourth Circuit determined the cross-shaped memorial is unconstitutional. First Liberty Institute, and our network attorneys at the international law firm Jones Day, appealed that decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.  By June, we should have a decision. I think the Gold Star mothers who designed the Bladensburg memorial in 1919 would be pleased. They chose the shape of the memorial to recall the crosses marking the countless American graves on the Western Front of that war. Surely the Constitution permits Gold Star Mothers to erect a simple memorial that mirrors those that marked the graves of their sons buried on the battlefields of Europe. Today is December 15th, 2017. This is episode #50 and our guests this week include: Dr. Sean Adams, on the role of coal in America during WW1 Mike Shuster with the story of the disastrous Halifax explosion   Candy Martin from Gold Star Mothers telling us about an upcoming European tour Brandon Mazer from the 100 Cities/100 Memorials project in Portland, Maine Jo Ellen Hayden introducing our newest site at ww1cc.org, Horse Heroes from Brooke USA And Katherine Akey, with the Buzz - The centennial commemoration in social media WW1 Centennial News is brought to you by the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library. I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. [MUSIC] Preface The Official Bulletin is the government daily War Gazette - which you can read yourself on our website like a daily paper at ww1cc.org/bulletin - with each issue being re-published on the centennial of its original publication date…. It is an awesome primary information resource for you nerds, history buffs and teachers… and of course for us at WW1 Centennial news! Well ever since it started publishing in May, we have been seeing nearly daily and certainly weekly articles about COAL… Yes.. COAL. The availability, the industry, the pricing, the mining, the transportation, the application… Coal keeps coming up in our editorial meetings. Our instinct says that this is a strategically important WWI subject - like airplanes, suffrage, the draft and food - but as we attack the subject, we keep feeling that the articles we are reading don't really get down to the strategic issues about Coal in WWI. We just keep seeing hints and snippets.. Like the related nationalization of the railroads and the effect on coal mining, or the nationalization of shipbuilding which leads to the decision to build a vast fleet of coal burning instead of oil burning merchant ships… and on and on… What we need… we reasoned… is a coal historian! Well, it turns out the world is NOT full of coal historians! But Katherine, bless her, has found Dr. Sean Adams who is joining us today - as soon as we jump into our wayback machine and roll back to the second week of December, 1917 to see how coal plays into the war that changed the world! [SOUND EFFECT] World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [MUSIC TRANSITION] It's the second week of December 1917 - and it’s REALLY cold! This winter of 1917 is still considered one of the coldest on record for most of the Eastern seaboard and beyond. A giant blizzard is whipping through the North East - and as you’ll learn later - it has some pretty harsh effects on the Halifax Harbor explosion. One of the main sources for staying warm in this bitterly cold winter is…. Well - COAL! And it is being rationed. We are being joined here in 1917 by Dr. Sean Adams, Professor of History and Chair at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Welcome Dr. Adams! [exchange greetings] Dr. Adams - as we mentioned in our setup - it seems like coal, it’s mining, transportation and use in this moment in American history is seen as a pretty strategically important issue…  what IS coal’s role in WW1 America?   [Dr. Adams talks - 5-8 minutes]   Dr. Sean Adams, Professor of History and Chair at the University of Florida in Gainesville. His most recent book is - Home Fires: How Americans Kept Warm in 19th Century America.   [SOUND EFFECT] Coming Attractions Before we move on with the show, we want to give you a little heads up on our episodes for the next few week. The swearing in ceremony took place at the commission’s headquarter in Washington DC. So how are these commissioners picked anyhow? Well Commissioner Dunning for example, was nominated by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. The law that established the commission provided that the twelve members of the Centennial Commission - who serve without pay - by the way - are nominated by the President of the United States, the members of the U.S. Senate, the members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and by the nation's two largest veteran service organizations, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The  name comes from the WWI custom of families hanging a banner called a service flag in the windows of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member serving with each member represented by a blue star, except those who had lost their lives in service - who are represented by a gold star. More than a decade after the war ended, a unique and incredible event took place: Gold Star mothers and wives traveled across the Atlantic to visit the battlefields of Europe and the graves of their fallen family members. Next summer, that journey will be retraced by a special cruise and tour, and here to tell us more about it is Candy Martin, the Immediate Past National President of American Gold Star Mothers --- who is herself a Gold Star Mother, having lost her son 1st Lieutenant Thomas Martin, US Army, on October 14, 2007 in Iraq and herself served 38 years in the Army. But chatting with friends has its origins in a darker, and definitely less comfortable, place than you may think-- A chat in the trenches of WWI was another name for a louse, These horrid and itchy pests filled your clothes and got all over you including into your hair --- and chatting was the act of picking lice off yourself --- and in a very socially companionable - very monkey - ape -Jane Goodall reminiscent vision - helping to groom your companions. This was a really important daily task that could fill hours of the day-- something soldier’s could do to pass the time as they helped comrades pick lice - was to engage in small talk - Hence to the term chatting! - Who knew!!! So today chatting live or online, chat rooms, and social chats continue with great vigor but -- with fewer lice. The bracelet belonged to an Irish woman serving with the US Army Nurse Corps in France during World War I It was recently returned to her relatives in Ireland. The bracelet was found fifteen years ago by an eight-year-old boy in a schoolyard in northeastern France. Returning the bracelet led to a long, and ultimately successful search for the descendants of its original owner. Click here to read more about the quest, whose story is so interesting that it  spawned a documentary film in France. Hi Theo! Signal Corps Photographers We had some great content come through our Twitter feed this week, which you can follow at the handle @ww1cc. I particularly enjoyed an image from the twitter account 100ans US en Haute Marne-- a photograph of some US Signal Corps photographers. Not only is their equipment very cool -- especially if youre a camera enthusiast-- but their service produced some of the most incredible images of the war. During World War I the Signal Corps was responsible for communications.  However, the Signal Corps had other responsibilities during the war, such as army aviation (until May 1918) and photography.  The Photographic Section of the Signal Corps was established in June 1917, and it was responsible for the U.S. Army’s official ground and aerial photography of World War I. You can view a collection of the Signal Corps’ ww1 photography, and the photo from twitter, by following the links in the podcast notes.   link:https://twitter.com/100ansHM/status/940523627807756288 http://cdm16635.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/search/collection/p16635coll16!p16635coll22/order/title/page/1 Aussie Rifles Also from Twitter, an image of an interesting invention -- and a great example of necessity breeding innovation -- the drip rifle. During the evacuation from Gallipoli, the Allied forces had to keep up the appearance of fully inhabited trenches, despite their numbers dwindling with each passing night as soldiers were evacuated under the cover of darkness. In order to keep up the ruse, ANZAC soldiers developed the drip rifle -- a rifle that would self-fire, thereby keeping the turks convinced that the abandoned trenches were still occupied. In this particular image, two kerosene tins were placed one above the other, the top one full of water and the bottom one with the trigger string attached to it, empty. At the last minute, small holes would be punched in the upper tin; water would trickle into the lower one, and the rifle would fire as soon as the lower tin had become sufficiently heavy. Visit the links in the podcast notes to learn more about variations of drip rifles--and how they saved the allied retreat at Gallipoli. And that’s it this week for the Buzz! link:https://twitter.com/AWMemorial/status/938604024647028736 https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/encyclopedia/gallipoli/drip_rifle Outro Thank you for joining us again for--  WW1 Centennial News for the second `week of December, 1917 and 2017 We want to thank our guests...
