In honor of Month of the Military Child, we're spotlighting the power of storytelling to reflect the lives and resilience of military kids. In this heartwarming episode, we sit down with Quincy Martin—Jones-Onslow employee, US Marine veteran, and proud uncle—whose children's book "Breezy's World Adventure" draws deeply from his global travels and military service. The story follows Breezy, a curious 10-year-old girl, as she explores Japan, London, Australia, and Dubai—mirroring the journeys of many military children who grow up moving from place to place. Inspired by his own adventures and his spirited niece, Martin brings to life the wonder, adjustment, and cultural curiosity that define the military child experience.Martin, who also illustrated the book, shares how his Marine Corps background helped him authentically shape Breezy's journey—offering a touching tribute to the adaptability and creativity of military kids. His message to young readers echoes throughout the episode: embrace every new place, capture memories beyond the camera, and stay open to the beauty of the unknown. Listen now!Run Time: 24 Minutes
April is Month of the Military Child. For this episode we are speaking with Chris Quigley and her friend Bella about the work they do with Military Children. They tell us about some of the challenges they hear about and what we all do to support Military Children this month - and year round.About our Guests:An East coast chance meeting and marriage to a CAF Member - now veteran - was the catalyst for Chris's now 26 year career supporting military members and their families at MFRC's and with Military Family Services. Chris has a background in childhood education and MH. These pursuits allow her to engage with children to help them cope and learn resiliency skills. Using the art of puppetry, Chris is able to meet children where they are at and help them overcome their struggles. Some parents have described it as a true blessing. Chris and Bella – her 6 year old ostrich puppet -- develop relationships with children – and in doing so they help children discover ways to cope with missing loved ones , overcome the fear of speaking to new friends and many other challenges that face Military children. When Chris is not supporting military families in some capacity, you can find her volunteering at the local MFRC, gardening and planning her winter greenery and Christmas displays for friends in the neighborhood. We want to hear from you!Do you want to tell your story? The children of active duty U.S. service members need to hear the gospel message as much as their parents do, and that's where the work of the Child Evangelism Fellowship comes into play. Andy Bunn serves as the organization's Director of Military Children's Ministry, which works to plant “Good News Clubs” on military bases nationwide. They provide weekly activities for kids in addition to special clubs for holidays like Christmas or “5-Day Club,” which is like Vacation Bible School. Andy says what the ministry needs the most to continue to expand its reach is to acquire people who have a desire to see children presented with the good news of the gospel and are willing to commit to helping the program run smoothly. "Literacy Leadership" The Learning Ally Podcast with Dr. Terrie Noland, CALP
This podcast is near and dear to my heart because of three very special guests. In recognition of Month of the Military Child, I thought it would be important to have educators hear about the unique experiences of military connected children and learn some tips and tricks that could be beneficial for providing a community of support in some very difficult and exciting times. My first instinct was to tell the stories of my children since we are a military family; however, I knew I could never tell their stories the way they could. That's why you will hear directly from Zack, Makenzie and Cy as they share about life in school as military children. Simple ideas such as a star on a map, or drilling in to exactly what a student does about times tables or recognizing drawings or writings from military children are ideas that come up in this podcast. The beauty of this podcast is that so much of what is discussed can be applied to so many children. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/learning-ally/message
Happy Month of the Military Child y'all!!!!! Bet you didn't even know that's a thing. I only know it is because my mom always shares stuff on facebook about it lol. This week's episode is a little conversation between my pal Liam and I (remember ep 92?) where we kind of compare and contrast our experiences growing up as military children in the US and the UK, plus how it has shaped our lives and how we see the world. I loved having this talk with him- and hope y'all enjoy listening. So many good nuggets and soooo many places where that bit of perspective could maybe help someone see things in a new light. https://www.ivebeenthinkingpod.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/ivebeenthinkingpod)

I'm so excited to be talking about Milkid Mailkit™, a pen pal program for military children, with one of the program's co-founders, Brunella Costagliola. Brunella and her husband Michael Gosselin created Milkid Mailkit™ to encourage and foster international friendship for military children through the art of letter writing. The season of COVID and her own children being in front of screens more than ever with schooling going online made Brunella realize her kids' need for more connection. With beautiful stationery created by world-renowned creator and longtime Disney theme park designer and illustrator, Valerio Mazzoli, and their own inspiration of connecting military kids as penpals, Milkid Mailkit™ was born. If a child helps out with caregiving for a parent or other Veteran family member who is ill or injured, who gives that child extra support? These children are often overlooked. The goal of “Supporting Children Who Support Veterans” is to give you some information and resources to help you find ways to support a child if they are assisting with caregiving for a family member, or if they are helping with other chores or responsibilities as a result of having an ill or injured family member. Although the children may be small now, PsychArmor hopes that this course provides some building blocks to address any parenting challenges that may occur as children mature. This Episode Sponsored By:This episode is sponsored by PsychArmor, the premier education and learning ecosystem specializing in military culture content. Through parent coaching, she empowers parents, caregivers, and educators to curb a child's challenging behavior and deeply connect while tending to their own needs through self-care. Maria considers herself a veteran of trauma as she and her family immigrated to the US from Moscow Russia because of religious persecution. At 8 years old, she could not comprehend what was going on so it was a difficult transition due to a language barrier, living in close quarters with her family and grandparents, and rough family relations. She says during that time, the family was in "survival mode" and didn't take time to process feelings. Today she takes her knowledge and experience to help serve people through hard times and adopt necessary skills to overcome traumatic situations. Every day, many children watch as a parent goes off to a military assignment, often in dangerous situations. Most children will later welcome home their parents who served without incident. Others, however, will greet a parent who suffered a head injury, which changes all their lives. A previously kind and loving parent may become irritable, short-fused and be intolerant of frustration after a brain injury. To a child, this change can be scary and overwhelming. Children may not understand why Mom or Dad is so different and may blame themselves for their parent’s moodiness. Dr. Jerid Fisher is a forensic neuropsychologist and the Chairman of the National Academy of Neuropsychology Foundation. He is currently spearheading a project to educate families about traumatic brain injuries. My Dad Got Hurt. What Can I Do? is a book that targets children between the ages of 8-12 who, without any preparation, have been confronted by their mother or father coming home from their military service with a brain injury. Because brain damage is so often invisible, these children are confronted with an especially difficult reality. Although their parent is home from combat and may look like he or she did before deployment, mom or dad does not act or behave the same way they did prior to deployment. With Brunella I. Costagliola and illustrations by Valerio Mazzoli, this book offers young readers practical coping tools to empower them to feel confident about themselves and become a more active participant in his or her injured parent’s life. Join Dr. Jerid Fisher and me on Tuesday, March 13, 10-11 A.M. CT US. We will be having a conversation about his passion in helping Military Children cope with a Brain-Injured Parent.
