Opinions expressed are solely my own and do not express the views of the Town of La Plata. My view/takeaways: Candidates provided thoughtful answers. Some were better prepared than others Some responses were critical of the Town Council: *Approving development without the necessary infrastructure *Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance (APFO not done Full disclosure- perhaps I'm biased by criticism of the Town Council, but accept them as a current Council member (until May 12, 2025)While these criticisms are valid, additional facts (good and bad) and perspectives are provided rather than just criticizing the town and processes. We know Bev as the founder and manager of the Hogsprickle Wildlife Rescue Centre in Broadford. Bev is more used to dealing with hedgehogs, but less so turtles! However, she recently found herself nursing a rare turtle back to health after the reptile washed up on a Co. Clare beach. The rare green turtle, which Bev helped to bring out of danger, is apparently only the second time one has been washed up on Irish shores. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by the founder and manager of the Hogsprickle Wildlife Rescue Centre in Broadford, Bev Truss. Photo (C): Wirestock from Getty Images via Canva

In the early 2000s, eight Baltimore-Washington Metro Area premier dry cleaners banded together to create a powerhouse brand: ZIPS Dry Cleaners. Together, they brought 100+ years of garment care expertise to the table. Their combined knowledge allowed them to perfect the dry-cleaning process from start to finish. While known in franchising more for his years in food service, restaurants and hospitality, Bob Barry has actually served on the ZIPS Board, for eight years, prior to assuming the role of President and CEO for these industry disruptors. The ZIPS difference is their passion for providing high-quality dry cleaning at unbelievably low prices. They have streamlined every part of the dry-cleaning process, from cutting costs and cleaning times to providing the best possible service and prices. Today, they are thriving at 65 locations nationwide, with commitments in hand for another 150. Here to tell us all about it, is ZIPS President/CEO, Bob Barry.

Theron and Tom are backstage with vocalist Evelyn Wright and drummer Robert Hubbard Jr. talking about the rich history of jazz music in Akron and Cleveland in the first of a two-part series. In Akron, legends like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles would perform at the Palace theater before heading to Howard Street, where fans waited at clubs such as the hi hat, the Green Turtle, and the Cosmopolitan. The entertainers would then stay overnight at the Mathews Hotel. In Cleveland, those same performers would play at such clubs as the Tia Juana, the Loop Lounge, Winston Willis' Jazz Temple, Val's on the Alley, the Cotton Club and the Theatrical. Evelyn and Rob share their stories as we recapture some of the history of that era. Vocalist Evelyn Wright has been a professional singer for more than three decades with experience in jazz, R&B and pop. A native of Cleveland, Evelyn won the 1993 award for Most Promising Female Artist and Favorite Female R&B singer from Midwest Urban Music. Her recordings include a live performance with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra at the Bop Stop. Wright has toured throughout the United States and Canada, performing in top hotels, nightclubs and concert halls. (Learn more about Evelyn here.) Drummer Robert Hubbard Jr. is known for his diverse style of music consisting of jazz, gospel, R&B and rock. A Cleveland native, Robert began to play drums in his father's church at the age of 5. During his junior and senior years in high school, he was recognized at the Tri-C Jazz Fest as the top high school jazz drummer in the state of Ohio. Robert began his music career playing with local artists throughout Greater Cleveland, and his first major tour began in 1993 with R&B group Men At Large. His touring and performing career has consisted of playing with numerous jazz and gospel artists, as well as playing as the opening act with his bad, Moments Notice. (Learn more about Robert here.)

In this episode we discuss the value of a log book, the Sea Turtle Conservancy, and motion sickness I consider your log book as a very important piece of your dive gear. Unfortunately, the dive log is often neglected by divers. It is your dive diary. If you keep your dive log up-to-date you will be able to look back and relive those dives. You will know how the dive went, what you wore on the dive, the conditions and so much more. Be a conscientious diver and maintain your dive log. Listen to a couple of my dives from my dive log. Sea turtles have been under threat for a very long time. The Sea Turtle Conservancy https://conserveturtles.org has been working to protect sea turtles since 1959. Originally the Sea Turtle Conservancy started as the Brotherhood of the Green Turtle in response to the book The Windward Road by Dr. Archie Carr. One of the threats currently faced by all sea turtles is artificial lighting. Listen for more information on how the Sea Turtle Conservancy is helping to address this problem. For some divers boat diving is a challenge. It is a challenge because of motion sickness. We just don't know why some people are prone to seasickness while other aren't. There are several articles on the DAN website that discuss possible causes, medications and other remedies. A lot of great diving is done from dive boats. Hopefully if you suffer from motion sickness you will be able to find the best remedy for you. https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/medical/articles/Motion_Sickness https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/medical/articles/Motion_Sickness_Updated_2003 https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/medical/articles/Transderm_Scop_The_Patch

The power couple discusses The Shadow Hero, last year's graphic novel about the Green Turtle. Published by First Second, it's a superhero origin story written by Gene Luen Yang with art by Sonny Liew. The Green Turtle was originally created in 1944, had only a five-issue run in comics, and is rumored to be the first Chinese-American superhero in comics; Yang brings the hero back to life with this story. We also talk about the new USA Network show Mr. Robot, starring Rami Malek and Christian Slater. The show is about a cyber-security engineer/hacker who is recruited to help take down a huge corporation. As USA's first attempt at prestige television, Mr. Robot does a ton of things right and the intrigue continues to build as the season goes along. We highly recommend this show. Charlene's Notable this week is the end of Matt Kindt's MIND MGMT series and the one-shot follow-up conclusion, NEW MGMT. Eamon's Notable is Jason Reitman's live reading of the Big Lebowski, held at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal.
Andy and Derek are proud to have Gene Luen Yang on the podcast. With the upcoming release of his new book from First Second, The Shadow Hero (illustrated by Sonny Lieu), the Two Guys thought this would be the perfect opportunity to talk with one of their contemporary creator heroes. In this engaging conversation, Gene talks with the guys about the genesis of his Green Turtle, and how the original – an obscure ethnically ambiguous crime fighter from the pages of 1940s' Blazing Comics — inspired him to delve into the superhero genre. Demonstrating a keen sense of pacing, along with a healthy dose of humor, Yang shows himself adept in action-packed comics, something that the guys comment on throughout the interview. But as Derek and Andy both observe, The Shadow Hero nonetheless bears that unique Gene Yang stamp in wrestling with ethnoracial issues in the U.S., and doing so through the meshing of Chinese folklore and American pop culture. In this way, the book can be read as a thematic companion of such earlier books as Level Up, The Eternal Smile, Boxers and Saints, and of course American Born Chinese (all published by First Second). The Two Guys ask Gene about these earlier books, as well, discussing along the way his views on writing for a young adult audience, his 1997 Xeric Grant for Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks, and his contributions to the New York Times Magazine‘s “Funny Pages” feature (later collected as Prime Baby). All in all, it's a super fun conversation…and on top of that, Andy and Derek can now say that they've had a National Book Award nominee on The Comics Alternative!
