After an 18 year break from the RSC, Ian Hughes has returned to the role of Sir Hugh Evans in Blanche McIntyre's critically acclaimed production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. The production forms part of Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey's opening season as joint Artistic Directors of the RSC, where there seems to be a renewed buzz about the company and the work that is being produced in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Ian's last outing at the RSC was as Sir Hugh Evans in Merry Wives: The Musical, but he has since continued to tread the boards and made various appearances on screen in an array household titles. The Merry Wives of Windsor gives audiences an opportunity to see Ian back somewhere he love though and it was fantastic getting to hear him talk about his history with this beloved institution. In this exclusive interview, Ian Hughes looks back on his career, starting out his career without training at an elusive drama school and then becoming the first ever winner of the Ian Charleson Award. His first outing to the RSC came about in the early 1990s where he has since taken on roles in King Lear, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and more working alongside RSC greats such as Gregory Doran and Adrian Noble. It's an extraordinary career that has also taken him to commercial musicals like The Lion King, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Les Miserables. Never one to be pigeonholed, Ian has also had a career on screen taking part in shows such as Masters of the Sky, Doctor Who and Gavin and Stacy. In our interview, he shares how he's managed to carve out such a varied career working with so many luminaries in the industry but remains humble about the opportunities he's received too. Acclaimed and award-winning Shakespearean, Gregory Doran, has directed every play in Shakespeare's First Folio except Cymbeline. For him it's one of Shakespeare's most complex creations and he will be directing it for the first time as his swansong, as the Royal Shakespeare Company's artistic director emeritus. From the start of the production's rehearsal period until its first performance, we follow Gregory and his team as they get to grips with a play criticised and celebrated for its genre-busting, location-hopping, multiple plotlines, topped by the appearance of the god Jupiter descending from the heavens on an eagle.

In this podcast, we are delighted to share the recording of Greg Doran's visit to the Auckland First Folio in June 2023. Greg Doran, artistic director emeritus of the Royal Shakespeare Company is on a tour of surviving first folios sponsored by the British Council. https://www.britishcouncil.org.nz He comes to us after visiting First Folios in Japan and most recently Sydney, at the State Library of New South Wales. Next stop Cape Town. Our First Folio has travelled the furthest from the Print House in London, some 11,386 miles in fact. The Folio has had an active life, most recently getting some attention from David Ashman, our Preservation Manager. The Folio can be handled more easily post-treatment. The tangible evidence of the preservation treatment (including leather shavings and “gutter sweeping”) is now stored in a bespoke archival box with the Folio itself. In this recording, Greg meets our unique annotated Folio and talks with an interested party – including retired rare books librarian Georgia Prince who curated the exhibition Shakespeare in his time which featured 17th century rare books from the Heritage Collections. We also had a moment with the Shakespeare bronze, affectionately referred to as the ‘Beadle bust' – named for the sculptor Paul Beadle. The bust entered stage left during our discussion – returning to its plinth after a stint on the Ground Floor of our busy public library. Let's give Greg the floor to share his close reading! “If theatre holds a mirror up to nature, and you don't see yourself reflected in that mirror, then why should you engage with it?” This week on Speak The Speech, we are joined by “one of the great Shakespeareans of his generation” [Sunday Times], Artistic Director Emeritus of the Royal Shakespeare Company Gregory Doran. Gregory talks about his extensive and acclaimed body of work with the RSC, his long personal and professional partnership with Sir Antony Sher, and his commitment to diversity of voices in creating Shakespeare for everyone. Gregory Doran has spent 35 years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the last 10 as Artistic Director. His directing highlights include King Lear, starring Antony Sher, The Tempest starring Simon Russell Beale, and his world-renowned production of Julius Caesar for the World Shakespeare Festival. In 2021 he directed the Henry VI Part 1 Open Rehearsal Project, which for the first time invited audiences to observe the RSC's full rehearsal process. In 2016 he took the company to mainland China for the first time, with the Henry IV plays and Henry V. In 2012 he directed David Tennant in Richard II, the first RSC production to be broadcast live in cinemas. He's won an Olivier award, a Sam Wanamaker Award from Shakespeare's Globe, and received numerous honorary doctorates. In 2023, as Artistic Director Emeritus, he will direct Cymbeline, his 50th production for the RSC.
When Gregory Doran was appointed Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2012, his stated ambition was for the company to stage the entire canon of plays in the First Folio, the first printed collection of Shakespeare's plays. Ten years on and having just completed his plan, with the premiere of a new production of All's Well That Ends Well, he joins Nick Ahad to reflect on the changing nature of his relationship with the Bard. Nick visits Birmingham to see the rehearsals for WASWASA – Whispers in Prayer, an art installation and performance by artist Mohammed Ali which explores the act of Islamic prayer in a secular society. Taiwan has a new cultural landmark, the Taipei Performing Arts Centre. Arts critic Debra Craine was in the Taiwanese capital for the opening of the state of the art building, designed by Dutch architects Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten. Debra joins Nick Ahad to discuss why the Taipei city government commissioned the £185 million complex for theatre, dance and opera. Gregory Doran is stepping down as Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company after a decade. He is completing his final production, Richard III, starring disabled actor Arthur Hughes - a first for the Royal Shakespeare Company. During his time at the RSC, Gregory has worked with everyone from Patrick Stewart and Harriet Walter to David Tennant, as well as his late husband Sir Antony Sher, who died last year of terminal cancer. In this Father's Day episode special I am speaking to theatre legend, Thelma Holt. At 89 years old, Thelma is an encyclopaedia of stories and anecdotes, and, coupled with a fascinating life and career, she really is the dream guest for any podcast - so, I was delighted to hear we both lost our father's at the same ripe old age of 7, and I could get her onto mine. Thelma, a graduate of RADA and co-founder of the Open Space Theatre, became director of the Roundhouse in 1976 before joining Peter Hall at the National Theatre as commercial producer. In 1987 she received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement for her international work at the National. She received a second Olivier Special Recognition Award in 2020. After leaving the NT, for Peter Hall she produced Orpheus Descending with Vanessa Redgrave and The Merchant of Venice with Dustin Hoffman in London and New York. Her inaugural production as an independent producer was Three Sisters with Vanessa Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave and Jemma Redgrave. Subsequent productions include Tango at the End of Winter (directed by Yukio Ninagawa) and Hamlet both with Alan Rickman in the leading role, A Doll's House with Janet McTeer, which won four Tony Awards, The Clandestine Marriage with Nigel Hawthorne and Kean with Antony Sher. She represented the Cameron Mackintosh Drama Fund at Oxford University for 20 years, is an Emeritus Fellow of St Catherine's College and became a Distinguished Friend of Oxford in 2006. She was delighted that Cameron Mackintosh named a bar at the Noel Coward Theatre as a tribute to her in 2019. As Associate Producer for the RSC she has, with HoriPro Inc, toured Japan with the RSC's productions of Othello and A Midsummer Night's Dream. She co-produced in the West End the RSC's five Jacobean plays, The Taming of the Shrew and Tamer Tamed, All's Well That Ends Well, The Crucible, The Canterbury Tales, Imperium, Don Quixote and most recently Kunene and the King. In Japan she co-produced with Horipro Inc. The Merchant of Venice and Anjin – The English Samurai, both directed by Gregory Doran. Thelma was producer for all of Yukio Ninagawa's productions that were performed in the UK for a period of 30 years, including his final memorial production of Macbeth at the Barbican in 2017. In recognition of her promotion of Japanese theatre, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan. This bio merely scrapes the surface of Thelma's life and achievements - as does this episode - due to the fact that, as Thelma puts so brilliantly towards the end of the episode, ‘life is a hell of a lot of fun'. This week on Heavenly Shows and Unnecessary Letters: Richard II, directed by Gregory Doran for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2013, filmed live at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, and written in 1595 by William Shakespeare.What is a king? A miserable little pile of secrets. The tale of Richard the Second is that rarest of beasts; a piece of theatre in a very monarchist era that contains, and even to some extent glorifies, a coup dethroning the king. This is a play with two Kings of England; Henry the Fourth, who we’ll have two plays about in the near future, and Richard the Second; the least popular and least discussed of the royal Richards, he is a king mostly known for an excellent play detailing his demise written by the son of a glover from Warwickshire. This little scripted bit of the podcast has existed for a few reasons over the course of our podcast thus far: it’s been a place to make grand and sweeping statements about the place of Shakespeare in our modern lives, it’s been a place to make thinly veiled political jokes, but actually the initial intent for this paragraph was to explain why we chose the version of the play that we did. We’ve picked plays for lots of varied reasons, and some for no reason at all, but this one is very simple.Tammy’s a big Doctor Who fan, and putting David Tennant in a show is a surefire way to get her excited to watch it. The Boy in the Dress is a major new musical at the RSC in Stratford based on the book by David Walliams, with songs by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, a script by Mark Ravenhill and directed by Gregory Doran. With such a pedigree will it match the success of Matilda? Nick Ahad reviews. The Turner Prize is one of the biggest art prizes in the UK and offers £25,000 to its winner. Front Row goes to the Turner Contemporary in Margate where the Turner Prize exhibition is hosted this year to meet the nominees – Tai Shani, Laurence Abu Hamdan, Oscar Murillo and Helen Cammock - ahead of the winner announcement on the 3rd December. The Radio 4 Christmas Appeal with St Martin in the Fields will be launched on Sunday 1 December. Troilus and Cressida is a problem play in more ways than one. Its tone veers wildly between comedy and tragedy and there are no easy resolutions. From an economic perspective, games have outperformed other creative industries for years, and they're also nurturing the best creative writing talent. So how do writers fit in to this multi-billion pound industry? Praised for its witty and realistic portrayal of life in a care home, the book also sparked a media frenzy over the identity of its anonymous author, with a series of famous Dutch authors linked to the book. Jeff Wayne has made a new version of his 1978 hit album The War Of The Worlds, now starring Liam Neeson as the narrator, stepping into Richard Burton's shoes - with Ricky Wilson, Gary Barlow and Joss Stone taking on the roles sung originally by David Essex, Justin Hayward and Julie Covington. Jeff Wayne reflects on the original appeal of HG Wells' story, and the aspects of the show he has now changed. Gregory Doran's first production since taking over as Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company is a Chinese play called The Orphan of Zhao - which dates from 4th Century BC and has been described as the Chinese Hamlet. The production generated some debate, covered on Front Row, as the cast includes few Asian actors. Front Row sent critic Andrew Dickson to see the play, as it takes to the stage. Crime Stories is a new daily TV drama, which follows two detectives as they spend their day in a police station talking to witnesses and suspects connected to a particular crime. The dialogue is part-improvised, and one of officers is played by a retired real-life policewoman, making her acting debut. Crime writer NJ Cooper reviews. Five pianos - stripped bare and hanging above pools of water - play themselves while the voices of people such as William S Burroughs and Malcolm X echo within a vast concrete hall. This is Stifter's Dinge, a composition by German composer Heiner Goebbels, inspired by the Austrian author, painter, and poet Adalbert Stifter.
