This week, one of the defining writers of DC Comics in the 80s and early 90s will turn 75 years old. John Ostrander has a storied career over more than 40 years. He created an indy hit with his creator owned mercenary, Grimjack, and wrote some of the best received Star Wars comics ever. His work at DC includes The Suicide Squad, the Spectre, Martian Manhunter, Hawkworld, Manhunter and The Kents. But if you have that length and breadth of a career, you're going to wind up writing some Batman. So this week, we're reading three Ostrander stories featuring Batman or his rogues. We discuss the value of melodrama in the life of a supervillain. learn some facts about Penguin's favorite fictional character and read one story that probably shouldn't have been included in an episode meant to celebrate a writer, since even the best sometimes miss. And here is the link Kevin Conroy reading the dialogue from a scene in The Dark Knight, as promised: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xIcjQGcgLk Deadshot # 1-4 Batman: Penguin Triumphant Grotesk (Batman V.1 # 659-662) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

Diabolu Frank, Illegal Machine, and (a little bit of) Fry-Hole take you on a winding journey through the early history of the direct sales market, specific to the initial competitive independent publishers Pacific, Capitol, and First Comics. All this is specifically with regard to how that relates to the Organic Theater Company stage play Warp by Stuart Gordon and Lenny Kleinfeld (as "Bury St. Edmund,") and its comics adaptation by Peter B. Gillis, Frank Brunner, Jerry Bingham, Mike Gustovich, Howard Chaykin, George Freeman, Marc Silvestri, and others; Mike Grell's Starslayer: The Log of the Jolly Roger, as continued by Lenin Delsol and others; and the early Grimjack back-up strips by John Ostrander & Timothy Truman. When the 1980s run of Marvel's Ka-Zar is canceled, our hero finds himself the king of the Land of Canceled Heroes! This multiverse is home to heroes who have had their comics canceled and believe it or not, we return to this earth again in issues of Silver Sable and the Wild Pack AND Deadpool. We discuss these visits, other meta comics, Mike Carlin's wedding proposal and more. Ep. 87 What if there was a Land of Canceled Comics / Heroes? Earth of a temporary designation 709 (Marvel Comics), as seen in Ka-Zar #34After previously covering Ka-Zar, Shanna and Zabu on episode 42 in an excellent What If, we return to the Savage Land to review the final issue in Ka-Zar's 1984 run involving aliens, adrenaline and a space zoo. But is this issue actual code for something bigger? As the issue closes, we seen in an epilogue that Ka-Zar is a comic book character and his cancelation brings him to the magical land of Canceled Comics! There he reigns over other (then) canceled titles/characters such as Nova, Spider-Woman, Man-Thing, Brother Voodoo, Howard the Duck, Deathlock and more. We actually return to this earth two more times, first in Silver Sable and the Wild Pack in 1995 where Silver Sable meets Luke Cage and a bevy of female heroes like She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel and again in 1999 with Deadpool when he ends up in a card game with Iron Fist, Moon Knight, DC Heroes and tons of Christopher Priest in jokes. All this plus a Marvel bullpen photo comic collage that doubles as a wedding proposal! Listen to our previous episodes discussing some other meta comics moments on our website. (We suggest Episodes 33, 45, 46, 51, and 72.)Reading List: Ka-Zar the Savage #34 (1984 Marvel Comics) Silver Sable and the Wild Pack #35 (1995 Marvel Comics) Deadpool #34 (1999 Marvel Comics) Plus Animal Man #25, Grimjack #27, and more! Let's not start off with a silly joke about how everything Mike touches turns to Gold. Oops, too late. But Mike Gold has had one of the more interesting careers in comics, starting with a stint as DC's first public relations manager in the early 80s. He's perhaps best known for launching First Comics later that decade, featuring a murderer's row of talent, including Frank Brunner, Mike Grell, Howard Chaykin, Joe Staton, Steven Grant, and John Ostrander (some of whom you can hear in previous interviews). And check out these seminal and influential books First churned out: American Flagg, GrimJack, Nexus, Badger, Dreadstar, and Jon Sable Freelance. As if that wasn't enough, Mike returned to DC and edited a whole bunch more amazing titles, like Legends, The Question, Action Comics Weekly, Hawkworld, and the Mike Grell masterpiece, Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters. This is an Oren Only episode. The Business Year (Second Quarter - 1985) ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun 1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. This week I had the extreme pleasure of talking with legendary writer John Ostrander. John has written for countless titles across DC, Marvel, Dark Horse and others including Batman, X-men, Martian Manhunter, The Punisher, Hawkworld and much much more. He was a major player in the Star Wars EU comics having written for Republic and Legacy as well as being the creator of the modern day version of The Suicide Squad, his own title Grimjack and the character of Oracle. We discuss his work and career in comics and have a good time geek out session over the upcoming Suicide Squad film, DC's television universe and Doctor Who.
Another Previews catalog showed up on their doorsteps, so it's time to gaze into the tomorrow of November 2015 and see what catches Mike and Greg's eyes. Always happy to welcome back John Ostrander, who's back to talk about Star Wars Legacy, and why it's at a good point to jump on if you haven't checked it out before. we also discuss hisrecent work at DC. like 3 spectacular issues f eret Six, which featured an incredible one issue story on Deadshot, and a 2 issue Blackest Night tie-in that put the Suicide Squad against The Six. We talk about Amanda Waller's apearences in Smallville, talk about new projects in the works featuring Grimjack and Munden's Bar, and wonder why DC hasn't collecteed John & Del Close's amazing horror-comedy series Wasteland.
