Ulalume - An Edgar Allan Poem

"Ulalume" is a haunting poem by Edgar Allan Poe that delves into themes of grief, loss, and the subconscious mind. Narrated in the first person, the poem takes the reader on a journey through a desolate landscape on a dark October night. The narrator is led by a star, which he later realizes is the planet Venus, the "dread star" that led him to the tomb of his lost love, Ulalume, exactly a year before. The poem culminates in a moment of horrifying realization when the narrator discovers he has been unconsciously drawn back to Ulalume's tomb, a discovery that brings him immense sorrow. The poem is notable for its intricate rhyme and meter, as well as its gloomy, Gothic atmosphere. "Ulalume" deals with the human psyche's complexity, illustrating how grief and sorrow can become cyclical, leading individuals to places and memories they might prefer to avoid. The work is a powerful exploration of emotional pain, subconscious impulses, and the inescapable nature of loss and remembrance. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5744894/advertisement

ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. This episode includes Blue Devil #19 & Summer Fun Annual #1, Dreadstar and Company #6, G.I. Diabolu Frank, Illegal Machine, and Mr. Fixit return to "The Metamorphosis Odyssey," Jim Starlin's sci-fi/fantasy, as it transitions from a series of fully painted special edition graphic novels into a comic book series. First up is 1981's The Price, which introduces the saga's "wizard," Syzygy Darklock. Originally published in a black & white magazine format as Eclipse Graphic Album Series #5, it was colorized for the comics format Dreadstar Annual #1. Next comes Summer 1982's Marvel Graphic Novel #3, the first chapter in the series actually called Dreadstar, the title of the ongoing series and the more famous branding for the odyssey overall. Finally, a story threaded through the December 1982 issue of the anthology magazine Epic Illustrated, where the fourth member of the developing rebel band is (unintentionally) introduced. We also continue to compare the various editions and formats across the epic's many publishers. Let's not start off with a silly joke about how everything Mike touches turns to Gold. Oops, too late. But Mike Gold has had one of the more interesting careers in comics, starting with a stint as DC's first public relations manager in the early 80s. He's perhaps best known for launching First Comics later that decade, featuring a murderer's row of talent, including Frank Brunner, Mike Grell, Howard Chaykin, Joe Staton, Steven Grant, and John Ostrander (some of whom you can hear in previous interviews). And check out these seminal and influential books First churned out: American Flagg, GrimJack, Nexus, Badger, Dreadstar, and Jon Sable Freelance. As if that wasn't enough, Mike returned to DC and edited a whole bunch more amazing titles, like Legends, The Question, Action Comics Weekly, Hawkworld, and the Mike Grell masterpiece, Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters. On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award Hall of Fame comics creator Jim Starlin. Originally from Detroit, Jim broke into comics in the 1970s, first as an art director at Marvel, and then moving into being an artist and eventually a writer, working on books like Iron Man and Captain Marvel. During his decades at Marvel, Jim created or co-created many of the characters and wrote many of the stories that eventually made up the backbone of the MCU, including Shang-Chi, Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer and Thanos, his work eventually leading to the Infinity Gauntlet. And this is just a small sampling of the things he's written and drawn. At DC, he wrote Batman, including the famous story Batman: A Death in the Family, and currently he is working on a new Dreadstar graphic novel! Jim Starlin is a name that really doesn't need an introduction - but we'll give one anyway. Thanos, Gamora, Dreadstar, Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, Adam Warlock ... Starlin has had a hand in creating, co-creating or revamping some of the biggest characters and is responsible for some of the most iconic storylines in comic book history: Infinity Gauntlet and Death In The Family just to name two.On April 14, in conjunction with the fine folks at Ominous Press, Starlin launch a brand new Kickstarter project - Dreadstar Returns: the first all-new Vanth Dreadstar adventure in 3 decades. How well was it received? Well, the 100-page brand new graphic novel hit its funding target in just 14 short hours. With over a week still to go (as at the time of this recording), the project has blasted through all stretch goals and is now about hit the USD$100,000 mark.Jim was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to chat with us about many things including the story behind this new Kickstarter project, which current industry talent he'd like to work with, and what he does to help deal with a missing creative muse. Plus he reveals just why he hates Walt Simonson. Which we're sure is a friendly grudge. We hope. You’ve still got time to support the project, especially with all stretch goals well and truly covered. Check out all the options on the project’s Kickstarter page. And finally, a shout out to Jamie Jameson - while all will be revealed in the interview, we wanted to wish her a full and speedy recovery.

Happy San Diego Comic Con 2019 and the 50th Anniversary of the show!  Hamby is live from Comic Con on Day One with Legendary comic book writer, Jim Starlin.  Jim is best known as the creator of Thanos, Drax the Destroyer, and Gamora with Marvel Comics.  With frequent collaborator Ron Lim he went on to write The Infinity Gauntlet mini series that would one day become Avengers: Infinity War on the big screen.  Jim is also the creator of Shang-Chi a confirmed Marvel Phase Four character starring in his own movie.  And that's not all!  Jim also wrote Batman: Death in the Family in which the second Robin, Jason Todd was killed off after the fans voted to let the Joker kill him.....!!!  We asked him about that story and he tells us one of his own about how he lobbied to let them kill Jason Todd a few years earlier.  Amazing
