When this 80's flick first hit the big screen, movie-goers were jump-scared by a ghostly librarian roaming the quiet aisles of a public library, a multi-story marshmallow man towering over the streets of New York, and slime, lots and lots of slime. Fortunately, four wisecracking misfits were just a phone call away, ready to take down these paranormal pests with their proton packs and ghost traps, but behind the scenes, it took much more than a simple phone call to bring the poltergeist-ridden picture to life. So take a ride in Ecto-1, power up your proton packs, and whatever you do, don't cross the streams, as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Laramy Wells, discuss “Ghostbusters” from 1984 on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback! Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Harvey Comics, creator of Casper, sued the producers, claiming the ghost in the logo was too close to the Casper character "Fatso". The court ruled against them, stating there were only so many ways to draw a ghost. Sigourney Weaver recalled: "I once had a fire in my apartment [after the movie], and the firemen came to put it out. One of them opened up my refrigerator and said, 'Whoa, you better call the Ghostbusters.'" In the middle of the film's initial release, to keep interest going, Ivan Reitman ran a trailer that was basically the commercial the Ghostbusters used in the movie, but the 555 number was replaced with a 1-800 number, allowing people to actually call in. Callers got a recorded message of Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd saying something to the effect of "Hi. We're out catching ghosts right now." They got 1,000 calls per hour, 24 hours a day, for several weeks. Sometimes things just have to be brought back to basics. Comics were made for kids and it's nice to finally look at one of those again. Especially because we get to look at a witch at the height of Spooky Season. Even if the witch in question is a good little witch. Diego Jourdan Pereira comes on the show to help take a look at the surprisingly good game and a peek into the Harvey Comics lore that I'm surprised hasn't shown up here more. Also be sure to check out his new book Bizarre Bathroom Reader which can be preordered from Skyhorse Publishing, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target. Learn such things as: Will Chris ever own this game? What happens when the reason for a game's existence suddenly isn't going to happen anymore? Why can't things be made just for the fun of it? And so much more! You can find Diego at his website Diego Jourdan Pro and his Amazon author page. Just in time for Halloween, rewind with us to 1995 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the supernatural fantasy comedy drama which debuted the first ever fully CGI lead character in a feature film. When specialist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) is recruited by Carrigan (Cathy Moriaty) to communicate with Casper and his fellow spirits, he brings along his teenage daughter, Kat (Christina Ricci). Artist and writer Eric Shanower returns to discuss Harvey Comics. Plus, the usual news from Fun Ideas Productions.
Alex Grand and Jim Thompson discuss the history of Harvey Comics with the grandson of Leon Harvey, Jonny Harvey, documentary filmmaker. From its humble beginnings in 1939, Al Harvey started Harvey comics from a business deal with Irving Manheimer and Worth Carnahan. His two brother’s, Robert and Leon Harvey joined and this family found success licensing characters for comics like the Green Hornet, Dick Tracy, Flash Gordon and Paramount Picture's Casper the Friendly Ghost. Harvey developed Casper into what we know today and also created original characters like Richie Rich. In 1958, Harvey purchased the rights to Casper, and got more characters like Hot Stuff printing comics for young kids. Despite its huge pop cultural success, The Harvey Family ceased publishing comics, and then sold the company in 1989. For many years Harvey Comics were perhaps the premier publisher of kids' comics in America, with characters like Casper the Friendly Ghost and Richie Rich providing wholesome entertainment for elementary school kids. But since Havey went under in the mid-1990s, this "little company that could" has largely passed out of the imaginations of readers and fans. I was joined by Jonny Harvey, director of an upcoming documentary series about Harvey Comics and a member of the Harvey family, to discuss the fascinating life and times of this very unique family business. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/classiccomics/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/classiccomics/support

American Splendor scene #29 (1:31:12 to 1:37:31) — Alex Robinson of Star Wars Minute joins Josh & Dean for the final scene of the film! (Well, actually, six little “scenelets.”) It's one year later, and Harvey & Joyce sign Our Cancer Year. Harvey is declared cancer-free! They adopt Danielle, and Harvey adjusts to being a parent (of a sort). The real Harvey retires from the VA hospital, and the movie ends with a group hug. Jay Stephens is a Guelph, Ontario-based and Toronto-born comic artist and cartoonist who joins Aaron for a live episode from The Guelph Comic Jam on the day of the 2019 Joe Shuster Comic Book Awards, which honours Canadians like Joe Shuster – the co-creator of Superman – who make their living in mainstream comics. Jay began his career getting bankrolled by a Guelph comic shop called Collage, under Tragedy Sucks Comics, to create his own indie and underground comic anthology called Sin where many of his most well-known characters first appeared. These are characters like The Nod, (not to be confused with Domino's Pizza's The Noid) JetCat and Tutenstein. The Nod would go on to be the title character in The Land of Nod – Stephens' most critically-acclaimed comics work to date, having been nominated for both an Eisner and a Harvey Award. Meanwhile, Tutenstein would live on in a cartoon of the same name on Discovery Kids and JetCat would be part of Nickelodeon's KaBlam! segments.Speaking of animation, thanks to his underground comics work on Sin, Stephens was soon plucked from that realm to work on a favourite of Aaron's childhood – YTV's absurdist '90s sketch comedy show, Squawk Box starring the very underrated, but never imitated child actor Dov Tiefenbach. Not only did Stephens write on the show, but he also created the animated short Wonder Duds about a hapless superhero who only ever did the bare minimum necessary to call himself a hero. In addition to being influenced by classic Hanna Barbara cartoons and Harvey Comics like Casper, Richie Rich, and Hot Stuff, he was also fascinated by creepy horror comics and monsters of legend, which was a heavy influence on his Cartoon Network show, The Secret Saturdays, which featured its own toy line from Mattel. As an artist who tells Aaron that he peaked kind of early, his latest work, Dejects, represents a revival of sorts featuring lost and rejected stories starring his most well-known characters: Tutenstein, The Nod, Wonder Duds and JetCat. It also marks a reunion with his old Tragedy Sucks editor Michel Vrana who has revived his old publishing outfit Black Eyed Books to put out Dejects. On the pod, Aaron and Jay get personal to talk about the ups and downs of his career. They answer where he has been and what he has been doing since his peak? They talk about his occultist upbringing, which had a huge influence on his art, what the comic scene is like in Guelph and his mainstream comics work with the original co-creator of the Teen Titans Bob Haney in what would be his last and lost Teen Titans script – eventually released in 2008 (four years after Haney's death) as Teen Titans: The Lost Annual. This episode is sponsored by Hairy Tarantula at 3456 Yonge Street in Toronto and Saskatchewan's Bam Coffee Co. Hi Richies and Poorbies! Takin' it back to pre-Toy Story (What, you don't measure your years by Pixar Movies?) with this Macaulay Culkin classic, Richie Rich! Based on the old Harvey Comics, this was a kid classic that really makes you appreciate rich people! Producer note, the audio on Josh's side is a little uneven, but until we get that sweet sweet Audible/Allbirds/Stamps dot com money, we use what we got! Enjoyyyyy! Love, Tape-Daddies

hey Hey HEY WHAT is going on here?? In this episode, matriculated students Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) check out one of their other shared interests...bordering on obsessions, when they read Harvey Comics' Saved By the Bell Summer Break #1 from 1992! After a deep dive into the secret origins and trappings of the television show, our Bayside Tigers provide biographies for creators Angelo de Cesare and Hy Rosen. Then, they read every goofy page of the comic, lending about the same level of talent to their voices as most of the actors brought to the show. After a break, they provide a brief history of Harvey Comics, before breezily talking about the show and devolving into fits of wheezing laughter. It's a show these knuckleheads couldn't wait to make, don't miss it! patreon.com/chrisandreggie Check out CLZ.com for a great collector's app! weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com facebook.com/cosmictmillhistory @cosmictmill weirdcomicshistory.blogspot.com chrisisoninfiniteearths.com search "weirdcomicshistory" on YouTube

Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) talk about the lives and careers of two of comics' greatest luminaries: Joe Simon and Jack "the King" Kirby! They discuss Jack and Joe's respective childhoods right up to the moment they meet, and continue along their whirlwind and somewhat unorthodox paths through comics' Golden Age. Then you'll learn about Kirby's ascendancy to rewrite the way comics were told while Simon quit comics...sort of. They also detail the late lives of the legendary Captain America creators, including the legal battle with Marvel fought by Jack Kirby's estate that was settled very recently! You'll definitely want to learn about these creative powerhouses that changed the comics industry--several times over! weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com BREAK CLIP: WBAI August 28, 1987 celebration of Jack Kirby's 70th birthday (snippet) SOURCES: http://www.tcj.com/the-joe-simon-interview/ http://kirbymuseum.org/biography/ Kirby’s vs. Marvel (2011-2014) http://www.copyhype.com/2011/08/marvel-v-kirby-work-for-hire-and-copyright-termination/ Simon vs. Marvel (2003) http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/16/books/16gust.html?_r=0 Stan v Jack - Who did what http://zak-site.com/Great-American-Novel/ff_Lee-Kirby.html My Life in Comics by Joe Simon, Titan Books, 2011 TAGS: comics, history, Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, Marvel Comics, Captain America, Young Romance, romance comics, Fantastic Four, Archie Comics, Harvey Comics, DC Comics, Challengers of the Unknown, New Gods, Kamandi, Thor, the Hulk
