Perhaps best known for American Flagg! at First Comics, artist Howard Chaykin broke into comics under the tutelage of three masters: Gil Kane, Wally Wood, and Neal Adams. He only dabbled in the world of superheroes, preferring instead more less costumed genres, like sci-fi, horror, and adventure. His most mainstream work includes the first ten issues of the adaptation of Star Wars, the World of Krypton miniseries, and a run on Micronauts. Aside from dozens of issues of American Flagg!, Howard also took on such classic characters as The Shadow and Blackhawks, as well as his own stories, such as Time[squared] and Black Kiss. He started mixing in television and film projects, including Mutant X and The Flash. And then there's a ton of other comics credits we're not going to get to. In this San Diego Comic-Con Special Episode, Neville chats to Dave De Vries In a few short weeks Neville will be travelling to San Diego Comic Con where he will be hosting a panel to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of some of Australia's most iconic comics and the creators behind them   In his preparation for the panel, many of the great creators behind titles such as Southern Squadron, Dark Nebula, Jackaroo, Flash Damingo, Phantastique, Nightshade and The Rock took time out of their schedules to chat to him about the story behind the stories. With the consent of the creators I will be releasing them over a number of short episodes so collectors and readers passionate about the books and stories can enjoy them as much as he does.   David is a film writer, director, and producer and also writes and illustrates comic books. He started his comic book career in the early 1980s with work for OzComics, Phantastique, MAD Magazine and Penthouse. Together with Gary Chaloner, Glenn Lumsden and Tad Pietrzykowski he established Cyclone Comics in 1985, to ensure that their characters could be published while remaining under their control. Dave entered the American market through First Comics, and Malibu Graphics with The Southern Squadron, a superhero team that at that stage had taken over the Cyclone title, and in America he worked on The Phantom for Marvel Comics, have worked on Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Star Trek comics for DC Comics, and Valiant Comics, and also other projects like The Puppet Master and Planet of the Apes, Flesh Gordon, Black Lightning and a Green Lantern annual for DC, as well as recreating the origin of Captain Boomerang with John Ostrander in an issue of the Suicide Squad. We get an exclusive behind the scenes look at the origin of Southern Squadron, the evolution of the team members into who they are today but also the purpose of the team and what makes them unique. Beyond that Dave talks about his influences, and process in putting pen to paper, whether it's writing or drawing and shares some sage advice from legends like Todd MacFarlane! Is this reason to celebrate? Well, they are BACK BABY! Southern Squadron along with many other Bronze Age heroes will return to Reverie and share their universe with a new generation of characters as part of the big bash 40th celebrations. Crack a beer, and enjoy the episode

In terms of any skills or abilities, he is completely self-taught…though he does NOT recommend that path for most would-be artists. In the early 1970's, when the old 4-color comics process was hours away from techno-extinction, Rice was hired to work as the one-man production staff of a small new company in Chicago called FIRST COMICS. Some months later his studio duties were expanded to include an original comics title, DYNAMO JOE, a giant-robot series which he created and penciled. It was in 1993 that Rice changed careers and got into TV animation – again, with no formal training at all.   Startoons Studio in the south suburbs of Chicago was a beehive of activity for Warner Bros. weekday programming, which found Doug storyboarding and doing background layouts for “Steven Spielberg presents The Animaniacs” which, in turn, led to him being handed an Emmy certificate and ‘letter-of-congratulations' from the head of KidsWB animation a little over two years after he started. After the studio folded in the summer of 2001, Rice began work on a two-fisted/pulp-style adventure novel, as a sort of hobby between freelance jobs. The book, SQUADRON, is currently in publication in soft and hard volumes designed by the author. After receiving a BFA degree from Western Kentucky, I married Betty Clemons and was drafted into the army almost at the same time. After two years in the service, I got a job at Fort Knox, Kentucky as an illustrator. In addition, I started freelancing at home and was published in a few magazines, including Heavy Metal and National Lampoon. During this time I produced my best work with my wife, our two children, Jennifer and Jeremy.Eventually, I was contacted by TSR Inc., the company that produced the role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, and I went to work there from 1981 to 1987. While at TSR, I helped set the standards of gaming art in the role-playing genre. Besides creating covers for Dungeons & Dragons, AD&D, Star Frontiers and other gaming books, I created SnarfQuest Tales for the company's Dragon Magazine. I may be best known for my work with the world of Dragonlance, exemplified by the covers of the DRAGONLANCE book series.Since 1987, I've been working as a freelance illustrator, creating covers for comics, computer games, magazines, fantasy and science fiction books and many other projects. I have worked for other publishers such as BAEN books, Bantam, Warner Books, ACE/Berkley, Doubleday, and Del Rey. I am also the co-author of Runes of Autumn and creator of the Sovereign Stone series. THE REDFIELD ARTS REVUE Episode 5: Mark Redfield In Conversation With Mike Gold At Baltimore Comic-Con ALSO OLD TIME RADIO REVISITED With Martin Grams, Jr. - Superman On The Radio! "I’ve known Mike Gold casually for a few years, having met at a Baltimore Comic Con, and every year when he and I sit next to each other in artist Mark Wheatley’s Insight Studios booth we just chat our fool heads off. That is , when Mike isn’t off to some panel discussion to impart wisdom and insight gained from over thirty years in the comic book industry as an editor or publisher. Mike Gold started in the comics industry at DC Comics in the 70s, and then went on to launch First Comics in 1983 during that fertile decade, a happy time, the 80s, when both indie comics and indie films could flourish, be creative and find a way to market and to an audience. Mike went back to DC comics and continued his successful career as an editor, and in 2006 he founded ComicMix with Glenn Hauman and Brian Alvey. So, at the 2018 Baltimore Comic Con, while we sat at booth number 118 merrily chatting our fool heads off, I asked him if I could turn the recorder on, and in the roaring, noisy convention center hall asked him about the current state of the comic book industry, especially for creators, be they newcomers or seasoned pros…" - Mark Redfield For more great audio be sure to visit http://www.redfieldartsaudio.com

In the episode of Word balloon, host John Siuntres presents a conversation with one of the great stars of the brozne age, who still draws amazing work today, Mike Grell. Grell's work goes back to the 1970's on titles like the Legion Of Superheroes and Batman, but you have to include his own creations like The Warlord and his revamp of DC's Green Arrow which began with The Longbow Hunters in 1986. Grell went to Pacific and later First Comics creating works like Starslayer and Jon Sable, Freelance. Grell is midway through a new Sable story, Ashes Of Eden . The story will eventually be collected as a trade, but you can follow the story for free at www.comicmix.com. In the interview Grell discusses how his own militray inteligence background informed the 1980's stories of Sable, and his future work with the character.Grell has another story in the works with Mark Ryan called The Pilgrim, The story is a modern supernatural thriler, based in part on factual accounts of the British Gov't study of the occult to combat the Nazis during WW2. "Mark crafted the story, and frankly it gives me the willies." Other future projects for Grell may include a return to his charcter Travis Morgan, The Warlord."I'm working on a DC proposal for a new Warlord story... we'll see." His also has two novels in the works, one featuring Sable, the other Savage Empire, which is sword and sandals epic based on an original comic strip idea of Grell's, about an archeologist who time travels back to Atlantis.
