Soundscape Alchemy.Friends, what an episode I have for you today! Months ago, I took an impromptu trip to Canaveral National Seashore to visit acoustic artists Perri Lynch Howard and Gordon Hempton.Frequent collaborators on the podcast, I was ecstatic to spend a weekend practicing the art of listening with them both. We walked mangroves, explored shorelines, and discussed the interplay of human voice, aerospace traffic, and birdsong. The creative collaboration of Gordon and Perri resulted in a stunning piece of environmental art titled, “Hear Me Out.” Join me today for a discussion of what it means to listen with honesty, to weave ourselves into the natural world we inhabit, and to move “in close proximity to lifelong love.”In this episode, Perri and Gordon delve into their experiences during their artist residency at Canaveral National Seashore through the Soundscape Field Station Artist Residency Program. The conversation highlights their collaborative project 'Hear Me Out', which investigates the changing soundscapes and their artistic interpretations influenced by the environment. They share their journey of recording, the emotional challenges faced, and how Doris Leeper's legacy inspired their work. The discussion also touches on the significance of natural sound preservation and future projects related to soundscapes and environmental art.At the end, pop in your headphones, close your eyes, and listen to “Hear Me Out.”Gordon HemptonAcoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton has circled the globe three times in pursuit of the Earth's rarest sounds. His sound portraits which record quickly vanishing natural soundscapes have been featured in People magazine and a national PBS television documentary, Vanishing Dawn Chorus, which earned him an Emmy. Hempton provides professional audio services to mediaproducers, including Microsoft, Smithsonian, National Geographic and Discovery Channel. Recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise he is co-author of One Square Inch of Silence: One Man's Quest to Preserve Quiet (Free Press/Simon & Schuster, 2010) and Founding Partner of Quiet Parks International.https://soundtracker.com/Perri Lynch HowardPerri Lynch Howard is a multi-disciplinary artist working in painting, drawing, installation, and sound. Her visual work and sound installations convey the passage of light, sound, and signal through landscapes on the front lines of climate change - a phenomenology of place. Howard received her BA from The Evergreen State College, BFA from the University of Washington, and MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her art has a global reach through projects completed in Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Canada, the Arctic Circle, and in South India as a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar.https://www.perrilynchhoward.com/Thank you to Nick McMahan for today's sound design and editing; and thank you to Brianna Nielsen for production and editing support. In this episode of HedgeD, we pick well-known hedge fund manager John Hempton's brain on what makes a good long investment. John is probably best known for his short selling abilities, but others have already adequately covered that topic so, instead, he walks us through his framework for assessing longs. John is truly a gifted storyteller, and we hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Cheers.

Gordon Hempton is a sound recordist who has spent his life capturing the sounds of the natural world. He's learned to be a deep listener, kind of like a sonic meditator. And after a lifetime of traveling the world and listening and recording, he still is amazed by what he hears. Find the whole thing at BirdNote.org/SoundEscapes.
Australian saxophonist Nick Hempton caught up with Hammo live from New York where he talked about what it is like to play music in a city that doesn't want to sleep, his new album and his approach to making music. Journey along with Hempton from tropical jungles to the frozen North as he records the music from the solar-powered jukebox that is Earth.
In Part 3 of this series on Change Management, Jen is once again joined by Spencer Stern, Director of Microsoft Dynamics Practice for Catapult Systems, as well as Alex Hempton, Technology & Innovation Deputy Director for the Performance & Analytics Department at the City of San Diego in California. They continue their conversation from Parts 1 & 2 by including another actual customer in the government space who has been a part of many different projects that have had a change management component.
It's a weird moment for the markets. The big stock indices are near all time highs. And yet there have been some high profile meltdowns and blowups. There was the collapse of the vendor financing firm Greensill. And there was the wipeout of the Bill Hwang fortune. Meanwhile, numerous SPACs and other speculative stocks have been getting clobbered. So we talked to short seller John Hempton, the CIO and co-founder of Bronte Capital, for an explanation of what's really going on.

John comes back onto Inside The Rope to highlight his views of the market, including the current volatility and headline-grabbing trades such as the Gamestop short squeeze; alongside other areas of the market that John believes could be in, or heading towards bubble territory. He and David also discuss recent market performance and retail inflows into financial markets which John refers to as "Mass Mania", causing valuations of companies to move into areas that would have never been previously forecast creating bubble-like conditions. John has been a financial markets professional since 1999 and is Chief Investment Officer, Founder and co-owner at Bronte. John was Head of Financials at Platinum Asset Management and its youngest partner. After Platinum listed in 2007, John started Bronte Capital in 2009.
In 2005, Gordon Hempton made a single spot within the Hoh Rain Forest famous for its serenity. But now it's noisier than ever. For outdoor enthusiasts, Olympic National Park offers a smorgasbord of ecosystems: rocky peaks, driftwood-strewn beaches and high-mountain meadows filled with wildflowers and bears. But its rain-fed temperate rain forests host some of the biggest trees in the world. The Hoh Rain Forest captured audio ecologist Hempton's imagination for its serene quiet, free from the intrusion of human noise. For decades, he has recorded the birdsong, bugling elk and pitter-patter of rain in painstaking detail. He's even declared one small section “One Square Inch of Silence” as a monument to preserve the natural soundscape of Olympic National Park. But in the decades since, air traffic over the Olympic Peninsula has made that square inch louder, not quieter — with the Navy's “Growler” fighter jets providing the biggest obstacle. In this episode of Crosscut Escapes, Hempton and fellow bioacoustic ecologist Lauren Kuehne join us on a trip deep into the forest in search of silence. --- Credits Host: Ted Alvarez Engineering: Karalyn Smith, Piranha Partners Music: The Explorist

John comes back onto Inside The Rope to revisit COVID-19 and discuss the things that he believes Bronte Capital miscalculated at the beginning of the pandemic, along with what else they could have done better. He and David also discuss how society measures the risk vs reward benefit of returning to normal activities in light of COVID-19, along with how that is relevant from the perspective of investing in financial markets. John also highlights some of Bronte's latest investments, which John places all in the "value bucket". Over the last decade, John believes that most of the underperformance of value investing can be attributed to rapid changes such as the internet which have swept the world. Finally, John discusses Bronte's latest position in Tobacco, and whilst not shying away from the potential risks, he highlights the opportunities he believes it presents.
While Bronte Capital's self-styled eccentric co-founder John Hempton has made a reputation chasing corporate frauds; he also loves, delves deeply into and invests in, strong, quality companies around the world. Another surprising thing about him? Hempton can also admit when he's pursuing the wrong strategy, and the 10-year bull market since the GFC, has proved a bit of thorn in his side. What might also surprise, in Part 2 of this interview, he shares some rather unexpected investing tips for young investors, and he argues very strongly for the importance of finding good bosses and mentors early on in a career. Global fund manager John Hempton, co-founder and Chief Investment Officer at Sydney-based Bronte Capital is a maverick investor who prides himself on being eccentric and loves to track down corporate frauds and short sell their shares. He creates critics, particularly amongst managements, because he's a short-seller. In Part 1 of this interview, Hempton explains why he short sells, or bets against companies whose shares he believes will go down. In its 11 years, he says Bronte Capital has shorted over 1,000 stocks globally. But he also invests long in good, quality companies. He talks of the crucial importance of portfolio risk management as a short-seller; and why Europe's biggest stock fraud - the recent scandal engulfing Wirecard- not only burnt Bronte Capital but why it could happen in Australia. In John Hempton’s eyes, what is occurring in financial markets is not an economic problem that can be solved through central bank stimulus. It’s a virus problem, and as a virus problem, it can only be solved through scientific intervention such as vaccines. John believes that the measures taken by central banks may cause more harm than good and that over the next 4 weeks we will see COVID-19 tip its hand to show us the full extent of its impact. In this special episode of Inside the Rope, David joins John Hempton of Bronte Capital to discuss both the health and economic implications that Coronavirus may have on the world and financial markets. Bronte was one of a few global equity managers to profit in February through the addition of downside market protection, in a time when volatility was priced at less than a quarter of what it is now trading at. However, aside from the health implications and recent volatility in financial markets, John doesn’t think it changes much for investors that are sensibly invested. His recommendation to such investors, sit it out.

We live in a world of generally expensive stock markets and bank equities trading at 30-year lows. So says John Hempton, co-founder of hedge fund Bronte Capital and a former bank analyst, who also calls it "one of the great puzzles of the world." On this episode, we take a special trip to Australia to speak with Hempton about banks and how they fit into the way he evaluates good businesses and promising stocks. He notes that bank profit margins have been declining in places with both positive and negative rates. We also speak about how he picks stocks in a market currently trading at eye-watering valuations, why you shouldn't necessarily seek 'value,' and what investors can learn from the early 2000s tech bubble.

Much has been written about the Northern Ireland peace process, particularly on securing the peace. However, as Senator George Mitchell commented in relation to the Good Friday agreement, “If you think getting this agreement was difficult, implementing it will be even more difficult.” Twenty-one years after the signing of the Good Friday agreement, those have proven to be prophetic words. Dr. Mason will explore what reconciliation looks like in a contested space, the power of memory and story in keeping the pain of the past alive, and how theology can move into that contested narrative in a way that brings about dialogue, honesty, and healing. He will also address the current Brexit situation, exploring how Brexit has been a very difficult experience for these two islands. Is religion a cause of violent conflict or a catalyst for its transformation? Do faith leaders have a role at the international peacebuilding tables? Current international affairs highlight the power of religious ideologies—and their misappropriation—as a catalyst for social action. They have also prompted unprecedented interest in the role of religious leaders and ideologies to transform conflict and violence. The keynote session of the fourth annual RPP Colloquium dinner series features Canon Sarah Snyder, PhD, Archbishop of Canterbury's Director of Reconciliation and The Right Reverend Anthony Poggo, PhD, the Advisor for Anglican Communion Affairs to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Together, they share their experience of working in conflict zones and reflect on vital lessons for the contemporary world. The event is moderated by Dean David N. Hempton, Alonzo L. I'm kicking off November by talking with Carissa Hempton, art director, designer, and one-half of the design studio known as A Civil Fox. Their motto -- Heartfelt Headstrong Design -- informs their creative process from start to finish. Carissa talked to me about how A Civil Fox started, what a typical day is like working from home and balancing life and projects, the rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship, and the importance of side projects. Carissa also works with AIGA Houston, so she's really tapped into the local design scene there. I really enjoyed talking with Carissa, and I think you'll enjoy hearing from her! This episode of podmissum features Dean of Harvard Divinity School David Hempton. Named the outstanding teacher of the year in 2008, he was recently granted a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities and has given the F.D. Maurice Lecture at King’s College London and the Cadbury Lecture at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Prior to his appointment at Harvard in the spring of 2007, Hempton was a professor of christianity at Boston University and director of the School of History at Queen’s University Belfast. At Harvard’s Divinity School, he has encouraged more discourse with the Arts and Sciences faculty leading to a broader intellectual dialogue on religion. Hempton studies evangelicalism on a global scale, with a focus on the early modern period. He has written numerous books and articles; his latest titles include Methodism: Empire of the Spirit (Yale, 2005), Evangelical Disenchantment (Yale, 2008), and The Church in the Long Eighteenth Century (Tauris, 2011). He is currently working on a study of the secularization of Europe and America from the eighteenth-century to the present day. Dean Hempton was invited to speak at Trinity on the morning of 11 September 2014 at the opening Upper School Chapel of the 2014-2015 academic year. He is introduced by Calista Lee ’11 and after his talk there is a brief question and answer period with Upper School students.
