It's Friday, January 24th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 5 Pakistani Muslims abducted 14-year-old Christian girl On January 9th, five Muslims abducted a 14-year-old Christian girl from outside her home in Pakistan, reports Morning Star News. Sharif Masih, of the Punjab Province, said he fears the kidnappers may try to forcibly convert his daughter, Saneha, to Islam and force her to marry one of the Muslim suspects. He said, “Saneha was lured out of the house by a Muslim girl whose family had recently moved to our neighborhood.” Please pray that God would protect Saneha from harm and return her to her family. According to Open Doors, Pakistan is the eighth most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. Congress: Deport criminal illegals On January 22nd, in a vote of 263-156, Congress passed The Laken Riley Act which will be the first bill President Trump signs into law. The act was named after the Georgia nursing student who was brutally raped and murdered by an illegal alien with a long criminal record. This legislation requires criminal illegal aliens to be held for deportation. Gary Bauer, Director of American Values, wrote, “This is not a controversial idea. In fact, a recent New York Times poll found solid majorities in favor of mass deportations. There was overwhelming support (87%) for deporting criminal illegal aliens.” Bauer concluded, “Kicking out criminals is just common sense. But 73% of House Democrats and 74% of Senate Democrats voted against the Laken Riley Act. The rot in the Democrat Party is deep.” Trump pardoned 23 pro-lifers On Thursday afternoon, President Trump pardoned the 23 pro-lifers imprisoned during Joe Biden's presidency for their attempts to save unborn babies, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart." TRUMP AIDE: “Next, we have a set of pardons for peaceful pro-life protesters who were prosecuted by the Biden administration for exercising their First Amendment right.” TRUMP: “Do you know how many?” TRUMP AIDE: “I believe it's 23, sir.” TRUMP: “Twenty-three people were prosecuted. They should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people. They should not have been prosecuted. This is a great honor to sign this. (he signs the order) They'll be very happy. So, they're all in prison now?” TRUMP AIDE: “Some are. Some are out of custody.” TRUMP: “It's ridiculous!” The now-pardoned pro-lifers include Joan Bell, Coleman Boyd, Joel Curry, Jonathan Darnel, Eva Edl, Chester Gallagher, Rosemary “Herb” Geraghty, William Goodman, Dennis Green, Lauren Handy, Paulette Harlow, John Hinshaw, Heather Idoni, Jean Marshall, Fr. Fidelis Moscinski, Justin Phillips, Paul Place, Bevelyn Beatty Williams, and Calvin, Eva, and James Zastrow. I urge you to take a listen to the powerful testimonies of 11 of these brave pro-lifers, who urged abortion-minded pregnant women to choose life in March 2021 at a pro-life rescue at a Mt. Juliet, Tennessee abortion mill, through a series of conversations at StifledCry.com. That's StifledCry.com. Trump signs Executive Order releasing final JFK assassination files In addition, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 23, releasing additional government files associated with the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., reports The Epoch Times. TRUMP AIDE: “Lastly sir, we have an Executive Order ordering the declassification of files relating to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” TRUMP: “That's a big one. A lot of people have been waiting for this for years, for decades. And everything will be revealed.” The order calls for the National Intelligence Director and the Attorney General to present a plan to the president within 15 days for the “full and complete release” of the remaining JFK assassination records and 45 days for the RFK and King records. Trump and former President Joe Biden previously released thousands of documents related to JFK's killing. Roughly 99 percent of the assassination files have been released as of 2023, according to the National Archives. Episcopal Bishop confronted Trump on homosexuals and illegal aliens And finally, on Tuesday, a female Episcopal Church bishop directly confronted President Donald Trump at a worship service held at the Washington National Cathedral, where she pleaded with him to “have mercy” on homosexuals, transgenders, and illegal immigrants, reports The Christian Post. Bishop Mariann Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington delivered the sermon at the Service of Prayer for the Nation at the cathedral. Near the end of her sermon, Budde directly addressed Trump, who was seated in the front row alongside his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance. BUDDE: “Let me make one final plea. Mr. President, millions have put their trust in you, and as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives. “The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meat-packing plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants, and work the night shifts in hospitals. They, they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, Gurdwara, and temples. “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away.” Fox News commentator Greg Gutfeld brought clarity to the conversation. GUTFELD: “She's talking about behaviors. And she's cloaking these behaviors under the false guise of compassion. I mean, she's lecturing a guy who got shot about being in danger. Who is she implying that is putting these people in danger? Are there guys in MAGA hats that are mutilating healthy children and removing their genitals. No, that's her team!” And Liz Storer, Sky News Host in Australia, was equally horrified with the Episcopalian Bishop. STORER: “For shame! So, there you are. I don't know much about the Episcopalian Church, but there's your bishop in Washington, pleading with the new President of the United States to, I don't know, do what? -- for what the Scriptures very clearly call a lifestyle of abomination. “So, I don't know where this woman is coming from. This ‘our God' that she's referring to certainly is not the Christian God!” Leviticus 18:22 says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” And regarding her reference to illegal immigrants, President Trump spoke out on Truth Social. He wrote, “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard-line Trump hater. She brought her church into the world of politics in a very ungracious way. … “She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. … She and her church owe the public an apology!” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, January 24th, in the year of our Lord 2025. It's Friday, December 13h, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Muslim attempted to rape 15-year-old Christian maid A Muslim businessman in Pakistan has falsely charged a 15-year-old Christian girl and two of her relatives with theft in retaliation for leaving his employ following his attempt to rape her, reports The Christian Post. Javed Masih, a Catholic vegetable vendor in Punjab province, said that his daughter, Muskaan, worked as a maid in the house of Muhammad Haider. He said that his daughter was in a state of shock when she came out of the house, tears flowing down her cheeks. Masih said, “Upon inquiring, Muskaan told his wife that Haider, [the Muslim employer], had attempted to sexually assault her, taking advantage of being alone in the house. My wife was shocked to hear this, but instead of confronting Haider at that time, she decided to first inform me about the incident.” It turns out the Muslim employer had made multiple sexual advances and had been harassing her from the time she began working in his house in September. In Matthew 18:6, Jesus said, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in Me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” When the 15-year-old Christian girl stopped working for the Muslim man, he filed false charges that she had stolen $3,000 worth of gold jewelry from the home. Trump rings opening bell at New York Stock Exchange On Thursday, President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange after promising to deliver an economic boom to a cheering crowd of traders and business leaders. At one point, as you'll hear, the room broke into a chant of “U-S-A.” REPORTER: “The incoming leader of the free world, he's going to ring the bell here in about 20 seconds. An historic moment at the New York Stock Exchange as we get the opening bell rung by the President-elect, Donald Trump!” (audio of ringing of the bell at the New York Stock Exchange) CROWD: “USA! USA! USA! USA!” Trump named Time Magazine's “Person of the Year” For the second time, Time Magazine named Donald Trump “Person of the Year.” In the opening paragraphs to the cover story, Eric Cortellessa wrote, “Trump's political rebirth is unparalleled in American history. His first term ended in disgrace, with his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results culminating in the attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was shunned by most party officials when he announced his candidacy in late 2022 amid multiple criminal investigations. “Little more than a year later, Trump cleared the Republican field, clinching one of the fastest contested presidential primaries in history. He spent six weeks during the general election in a New York City courtroom, the first former President to be convicted of a crime—a fact that did little to dampen his support. An assassin's bullet missed his skull by less than an inch at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.” Cortellessa of Time Magazine concluded, “Over the next four months, Trump beat not one but two Democratic opponents, swept all seven swing states, and became the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years. He has realigned American politics, remaking the GOP, and leaving Democrats reckoning with what went awry. “Trump has a ready explanation for his improbable resurrection. He even has a name for its climactic final act. ‘I called it 72 Days of Fury,' he says as the interview gets under way. ‘We hit the nerve of the country. The country was angry.' “It wasn't just the MAGA faithful. Trump harnessed deep national discontent about the economy, immigration, and cultural issues. His grievances resonated with suburban moms and retirees, Latino and Black men, young voters and tech edgelords.” Before he rang the opening bell at 9:30 a.m., a first for him, Trump spoke at the New York Stock Exchange. TRUMP: “It's really been something very special. And I have to say, Time Magazine getting this honor for the second time. I think I like it better this time. Actually been on the cover many times. I don't know who has the record, but I can only probably talk well about 25% of the covers. 25% are great. The others, I just sort of hide. But it's been an honor. “This is a double because usually they don't coordinate the Man of The Year or the Person of The Year with the ringing of the bell. Brilliantly, you picked them both at the same time. You were all friends, and you said, ‘Let's do it.' “The economy, I believe, is going to be very strong. We do have to solve some problems. We have wars going on that we didn't have. We have a lot of things happening that we didn't have, that would have never happened. They have happened, and I want to get them solved.” GOP Rep: Why hasn't Biden fired DOJ personnel over “selective prosecution”? When President Joe Biden issued his unconditional pardon of his son Hunter on December 1st, the president said this. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter's cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong. There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution.” In light of that bold assertion by President Biden that his own Department of Justice has singled out his son, Hunter, and selectively prosecuted him, Republican Congressman Jason Smith of Missouri, the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, asked an important question about Biden and the Department of Justice on the Fox News Channel. SMITH: “If Biden actually believed that his son was politicized by the Justice Department's prosecution, then why has he not fired one employee of the Justice Department? Because if he believes that there is corruption, if he believes that they're unfairly targeting individuals, he has the authority to fire those prosecutors, yet he hasn't done that.” Abortion mills could face mass closures if Trump defunds Planned Parenthood And finally, Donald Trump has committed to vetoing any federal abortion law that makes it to his Oval Office desk, but there are other ways to cripple America's booming abortion industry, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, Trump's appointees to head the new Department of Government Efficiency, have already noted their commitment to defund Planned Parenthood, America's largest abortion provider, by possibly $300 million. Plus, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance had already stated in October that a second Trump administration would defund Planned Parenthood. Isaiah 59:7 describes the abortion giant well. “Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.” If the Trump administration makes good on that promise, it will lead to mass closures of Planned Parenthood abortion mills nationwide. In response to the proposed cut by the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, Planned Parenthood issued a press release on November 21st in which it claimed that Americans were already “taking control of their sexual and reproductive health.” On November 6 – the day after the election was called – Planned Parenthood locations saw: vasectomy appointments increased by 1,200%; IUD appointments increased by over 760%; birth control implant appointments increased by 350%; and, [so-called] gender-affirming care appointments, [where people pretend to be the opposite sex with hormones and surgeries], increased by 140%. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Small but committed church in Syria Although the Syrian Civil War has faded from the headlines after 13 years, the conflict continues — and a smaller yet more committed church remains, reports International Christian Concern. A United Nations commission recently stated that the war is intensifying as war crimes and fears of a larger regional conflict mount. Although the Christian population in Syria has dwindled, those who remain are insistent on seeing God's kingdom advance in their homeland. At the start of the conflict, Syria was solidly 8% Christian. Today, only 2% remain. A Christian in Syria recently told a publication called Le Monde, “The older generation has died out, and the younger ones have rebuilt their lives elsewhere. Most of them have sold their homes.” The count of Christians affiliated with established denominations in Syria has dropped from approximately 2.5 million before the civil war to about 500,000 in 2023. In Matthew 13:31, Jesus talked about how even the small faith of a few people could be transformed, in God's economy, into something spectacular. “The kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” Hurricane Helene slams Florida with 140 mph winds At 11:10 p.m. Eastern last night, the eye of Hurricane Helene made landfall southwest of Perry, Florida along the Gulf Coast, as a dangerous Category 4 storm with 140-mph winds, reports AccuWeather. The risk to lives and property will remain extreme as Helene plows inland with hurricane-force winds sparking widespread power outages into Georgia that can last for an extended period of time. Additionally, Helene could cause a flooding disaster as it unloads more than a foot of rain in the mountains of North Carolina, South Carolina, and northern Georgia. AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter warned, “Some communities may be cut off with no way to enter or exit for days if there is damage to infrastructure such as bridges and roadways.” In partnership with local churches, Samaritan's Purse will need volunteers to help homeowners in Jesus' Name. You can sign up to be notified to be a volunteer and you can make a donation to help Floridians hit by Hurricane Helene through special links in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Lila Rose to Trump: “Stand for life” Leading pro-life activist Lila Rose is not backing down in the face of intense condemnation for criticizing Donald Trump's retreat from his former pro-life position, reports LifeSiteNews.com. She reiterated that her purpose is not to depress pro-life voter turnout, but to encourage Trump to change course. Rose is founder and leader of the pro-life group Live Action which produces original investigations into the abortion industry, educational resources on prenatal development, and daily pro-life news and commentary. Since Trump began opposing further federal action on abortion last year and criticizing state pro-life laws, Rose has been one of his sharpest critics among national pro-life leaders. In an August 27th podcast, Rose recalled the “electricity” of Trump addressing the 2020 March for Life as president. Here is what inspired her at the time. TRUMP: “It is my profound honor to be the first president in history to attend the March for Life. (cheers) We're here for a very simple reason, to defend the right of every child, born and unborn, to fulfill their God-given potential. (cheers) “For 47 years, Americans of all backgrounds have traveled from across the country to stand for life. And today, as President of the United States, I am truly proud to stand with you! (cheers) “All of us here today understand an eternal truth: Every child is a precious and sacred gift from God. (cheers) Together, we must protect, cherish, and defend the dignity and the sanctity of every human life. (cheers) When we see the image of a baby in the womb, we glimpse the majesty of God's creation.” Lila Rose said President Trump spoke clearly in 2020 about how the preborn “cannot speak for themselves” and even asked Congress to send him a late-term abortion ban to sign. TRUMP: “To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother's womb.” (cheers) In her August 27th podcast, she urged him to return to that same conviction. ROSE: “President Trump, stand for life. President Trump, if you want the pro-life vote, fight for life. The pro-life vote is not owned. The pro-life vote is earned. And you don't earn the pro-life vote by throwing it under the bus, by listening to whatever pollsters are lying to you and throwing the babies under the bus. “You earn the pro-life vote, and I would say the respect even of the middle moderates, by getting up there and saying, ‘I'm going to fight for what I believe in, for what is good and true. I'm going to fight for the lives of children. “So, what President Trump should say specifically is what he's said in the past: ‘I will fight for life. I will fight for babies. They have no one to defend themselves. They have no one to speak for them. I will help speak for them.' “That he will sign any pro-life legislation that crosses his desk as president, including the pro-life legislation that he used to ask Congress for back in the day. And he should say that he will fight against the abortion expansion of the Democrats. He will fight against the abortion industry that is hell bent on killing and taking innocent human life.” New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicted for bribes And finally, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted for taking bribes — including $123,000 in free flights and other ritzy perks — from foreign nationals in exchange for favors, reports the New York Post. The historic five-count indictment — the first against a sitting New York City mayor — details an alleged decade-long pattern of corruption by Adams that includes fraudulently obtaining $10 million in public campaign funds. The revelations came after the mayor was indicted by a grand jury on conspiracy, wire fraud, and bribery charges amid the long-running federal probe. In the sprawling indictment, prosecutors laid bare an alleged scheme that helped Adams underwrite his 2021 mayoral campaign while showering him with free hotel rooms, flights on Turkey's national airline, and meals at high-end restaurants. In exchange, the indictment charges that Adams allegedly pressured Big Apple officials to waive inspections and push through approval for the Turkish Consulate in Manhattan. In response, Mayor Adams made this comment at a press conference. ADAMS: “It's an unfortunate day and it's a painful day. It's a day where we will finally reveal why for ten months I have gone through this. I look forward to defending myself.” Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City. The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening government function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration. For the good of the city, he should resign." 1 Thessalonians 5:22 says, “Abstain from all appearance of evil." It's Friday, September 20th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Christian mother sentenced to death On Wednesday, a Pakistani Christian mother of four children received the death sentence after a judge convicted her under Pakistan's blasphemy laws, reports Morning Star News. Shagufta Kiran, age 40, was convicted under Section 295-C of Pakistan's widely condemned blasphemy laws for insulting Muhammad, the false prophet of Islam, which carries a mandatory death sentence. She was arrested in Islamabad by the Federal Investigation Agency on July 29, 2021, for allegedly sharing blasphemous content in a WhatsApp group in September 2020. Her husband and two sons were also taken into custody during the raid but were later released. Attorney Rana Hameed said, “The complaint against Kiran was registered by a Muslim named Shiraz Farooqi, who alleged that she had shared content disrespectful of Islam's prophet. However, Kiran has maintained that she has not authored the content and had forwarded it in the WhatsApp group without reading it.” Formerly a nurse, Kiran had joined several interfaith WhatsApp groups, where she proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ and defended her Christian faith. One such group, Pure Discussions, was administered by the complainant, Shiraz Farooqi. While the mother is hopeful of a positive outcome from the superior courts, she misses her family terribly. The verdict did not come as a surprise, as 99 percent of those charged under Section 295-C are convicted by trial courts under pressure from Islamists. According to the Center for Social Justice, nearly 3,000 people have been accused of blasphemy in Pakistan since 1987. Specifically, in the Punjab Province alone, 552 Christians are currently detained in prisons. Pakistan ranks seventh on the Open Doors 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian. Trump objects to Kamala's lies and thanks God for sparing his life twice On the presidential campaign trail, Donald Trump spoke on Wednesday at a rally on Long Island in Uniondale, New York. He took issue with the dishonest claims by Kamala Harris and the liberal media, reports RealClearPolitics.com. TRUMP: “It's time to stop the lies, stop the hoaxes, stop the smears, stop the lawfare of the fake lawsuits against me, and stop claiming your opponents will turn America into a dictatorship. Give me a break, because the fact is that I'm not a threat to democracy, they are. “They're doing things in politics that have never been done before in the history of our country. And worst of all, with their open borders and bad elections, they have made us into a Third World nation, something which nobody thought was even possible. Americans deserve a campaign based on the issues. We try and keep it on the issues.” And, Trump also expressed gratitude to God for sparing his life twice from recent assassination attempts. TRUMP: “God has now spared my life — It must have been. God, thank you. Not once, but twice. There are those that say He did it because Trump is going to turn this state around. He's going to turn this country around. He's going to make America great again.” Pro-abortion Republican Congressional candidate: A gutless wonder Republican Matt Gunderson is hoping to unseat incumbent Democrat Rep. Mike Levin of California's 49th congressional district. But his strategy is raising eyebrows by campaigning on a promise to keep abortion “safe, legal, and rare,” apparently hoping that his pro-abortion view will help him prevail in America's most liberal state, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Listen. GUNDERSON: “On a woman's right to choose, I'm pro-choice. I believe abortion should be safe, legal and rare. I don't want politicians dictating health care for my daughters. You might disagree, and that's okay. “But I bet there's more that unites us, like lowering housing, grocery, and gas prices, securing the border, and protecting Social Security. We can end the overheated political rhetoric and focus on fixing a broken Washington. I'm Matt Gunderson, and I approved this message.” Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, shifting public opinion and a wave of 10 pro-abortion ballot initiatives have led some in the Republican Party to conclude they must moderate the party's longstanding pro-life stance. Pro-life activists such as Lila Rose, founder of LiveAction, have forcefully challenged that conclusion, but because Trump has vocally sided with the moderation camp throughout his current campaign, other GOP candidates have been given cover to compromise as well. Psalm 119:1-3 says, “Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD. Joyful are those who obey His laws and search for Him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in His paths." Good Samaritan saves trucker from fire And finally, a Virginia man is being hailed a hero after he saw a fire blazing under a tractor-trailer — and immediately took action, reports FaithWire.com. Akeem Dixon was on his way to a job interview this week in Norfolk, Virginia, when he noticed the blaze. DIXON: “I was in a tunnel. Beside me, I see a tractor trailer. And I see under the tractor trailer, I see a fire under the truck.” Recognizing the need to move quickly, he started honking to get the driver's attention, but to no avail. That's when Dixon decided to pull his car in front of the tractor-trailer, according to WVEC-TV. DIXON: “[As] soon as we get inside the tunnel, I just drive right in front of him, put my forward flashers on, and I slowed right down to a complete stop. Then he stopped behind me. So, when I got out of my car, I rushed straight to the truck. And I was, like, ‘Yo, there's a fire underneath your truck!” The driver got out of the truck and Dixon told him to get a fire extinguisher. But it quickly became evident time was running out. Due to the flames, the engine was going to explode at any moment. DIXON: “I tell him to leave the truck, because it's going to blow any minute. Just leave it and come to my car. Let's move to my car, far away from the truck. As soon as we move from the truck and close to my car, at the same time, we hear a boom.” Thankfully, Dixon and the driver remained safe — all thanks to his selfless actions. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down his life for his friends.” Or, in the case of Akeem Dixon, for a stranger! If you missed the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, this was pretty much the tone of it: Trump: She's a communist. She's literally a Marxist. Harris: Actually Goldman Sachs loves me. Trump: I saw her eat a cat. It was on the TV. Harris: Dick Cheney loves me too. Trump: She won't kill any Palestinians at all. Harris: I'll kill way more Palestinians than he'll kill. Trump: I will kill the most Palestinians. I'll kill more Palestinians than anyone. Harris: You couldn't kill even one Palestinian. You are weak. Trump: I am not weak I am strong. I am the strongest. Harris: You're a weak little girl and you'll let China win. Trump: She's gonna start a nuclear war with Russia. Harris: I will invade Russia myself and I'll kill Putin with my bare hands. I am the strongest and you are the weakest. Trump: It's not true. It's not true. Harris: I will also do the most fracking and drill the most oil. Many Republicans have said I'm the strongest. Trump: No. No. She's weak on immigration. Harris: I kick immigrants in the balls for fun. [commercial break] The presidential debate sucked and they were both horrible, but Harris clearly came out looking more coherent and in control. In other words, Harris did what anyone debating Trump should have been able to do on day one. The fact that it's taken three whole election cycles to see a candidate dominate Trump in a basic presidential debate shows what braindead morons the Democrats have been serving up all these years. As a debater, she did her job. As a presidential candidate, she showed why so many warmongering Republicans have been so eager to support her. She showed that she's a Republican with pronouns in her bio, talking about how tough she's going to be on China and how much she loves fracking and oil and Israel and how many Republicans have endorsed her and her policies. This is what the “left wing” looks like in the world's most powerful government. US politics is so intensely stupid. Reading by Tim Foley.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has gone full MAGA. Those are words Liz Wheeler never thought that she would say on “The Liz Wheeler Show,” and she is delighted to say them. In the last three months, the Democratic establishment kicked President Joe Biden out of the 2024 election and staged a coup. It installed Vice President Kamala Harris in undemocratic fashion as a response to an assassination attempt against President Donald Trump. And now we have RFK Jr., a Democrat, forming a coalition with Trump: It's "Make America Healthy Again" and "Make America Great Again" combined. On that note, RFK Jr. actually supplied the best definition of MAGA Liz has ever heard. Plus, Blaze colleague Jason Whitlock joins the show to discuss the presidential race and what is motivating him to vote in this election. All that and more on today's episode. Bill O'Reilly, author of the upcoming book, Confronting the Presidents, No Spin Assessments from Washington to Biden, had this to say about President Trump: It is exceedingly difficult to get an accurate, fair assessment of Donald Trump. The liberal media despises him to a cartoonish degree, and some on the right have elevated him to cult leader status. So, Americans and folks living abroad are being misled about a man who could be leading the United States again by this time next year. If that happens, Mr. Trump would join the hefty Grover Cleveland in the non-consecutive presidential terms category. I know former President Trump as well as any journalist, with more than 30 years of interaction, dozens of interviews, sporting events, dinners, and telephone chats. So here is the truth about the man. He's disciplined in strategy when engaged. Most everything comes down to "the art of the deal." Although some foreign leaders despise him, there was far more order in the world on his watch than there is today under the apathetic, ideological Joe Biden. Philosopher Charles Taylor joins Miroslav Volf and Ryan McAnnally-Linz for a two-part conversation about what's gone wrong with our democracies and finding common moral understanding. They discuss Christian nationalism, authoritarian government, the future viability of Christian faith and practice, the chaos of the post-truth epistemic crisis that's rampant in political dialogue today, the role of social media in that crisis, and Taylor's most recent thinking about the growth of common ethical understanding in a world that often fails to live up to those shared moral principles of respect, dignity, and care.(Part 1 of a 2-part series)This episode was made possible in part by the generous support of the Tyndale House Foundation. For more information, visit tyndale.foundation.Introduction: Ryan McAnnally-LinzThe human world today is not the same as it was three hundred years ago. Far from it. Technology, economics, politics, art, culture—all have seen transformations, even revolutions, around the globe. Thirty years ago, a triumphalist narrative of these changes was in vogue: “modernity,” it was said, had solved humanity's perennial problems, broken through our narrow-minded ethical traditions, and set us towards a future of comfort and perpetual peace after, in Francis Fukuyama's phrase, “the end of history.” Even three years ago, we thought the world was different. I mean, I did. No wonder so many of us are trying to understand the revolutions and mechanics of human society. If you're paying attention, you're driven to understand. And so columnists and talking heads—academics and public intellectuals—not to mention your radicalized high school friend on Facebook—we all have these theories about ideal human society and culture, and, like how the hell we wound up here. Unfortunately, our desire to know and understand often exceeds our abilities to perceive and explain.Charles Taylor is our guest for the next two episodes of For the Life of the World. He sees human life and action not as something to be explained, but to be elucidated, lived with, and made sense of. Over 7 decades, he's produced an astonishing and magisterial body of work, spanning social theory, religion, epistemology, history, politics, the self, aesthetics, science, technology, and more. But you might be surprised to know that 30 years ago he described himself as a "monomaniac"—he meant that his ultimate concern is really singular: human life. The one issue that motivates his entire body of work is "philosophical anthropology." But answering the questions of what human persons are and what it means to live a life worthy of that humanity, he says, requires thinking along the borders and intersections of the massive diversity of human society and culture. He has a long history of political engagement as well. As an undergraduate at Oxford in 1955, he launched one of the first campaigns to ban nuclear weapons. During the '60s he ran several times for Canadian parliament as a major-party candidate, but fell short by a small margin each time. The result for us, of course, is gratitude for the incredible body of work that came in the wake of his attempts to gain office, including Sources of the Self, The Ethics of Authenticity, A Secular Age, The Language Animal—all the way up to his 2020 book, Reconstructing Democracy: How Citizens Are Building from the Ground Up.Taylor graciously joined Miroslav and me this summer for a long conversation about what's gone wrong with our democracies and finding common moral understanding. We cover a lot of ground, discussing Christian nationalism, authoritarian government, the future viability of Christian faith and practice, the chaos of the post-truth epistemic crisis that's rampant in political dialogue today, the role of social media in that crisis, and Taylor's most recent thinking about the growth of common ethical understanding in a world that often fails to live up to those shared moral principles of respect, dignity, and care. We'll run this conversation in two parts, this week and next. Special thanks goes to many of you listeners and friends who responded with thoughtful and important questions. Those questions helped to frame this conversation. Thanks for listening.Show NotesCharles Taylor's history of political engagement and his interest in philosophyWhat role did Vatican II, especially on freedom of religion, play on Taylor's politics? During moments of rhetorical generosity, politicians will give lip-service to bipartisanship or working across the aisle. Another favored metaphor of both Democrats and Republicans is “bridging the divide,” which, once upon a time, would actually happen on major legislation. With the Biden administration now calling for cooperation on infrastructure and other bills, Bob reflects on the fact that not all bridges are well built. Sometimes they collapse.* FULL TRANSCRIPT *TEDDY ROOSEVELT: Surely, there never was a fight better worth making than the one which we are in.BOB GARFIELD: Welcome to Bully Pulpit. That was Teddy Roosevelt, I'm Bob Garfield. Episode 2: Bridging the Divide.MAN1: My talk today is gonna be about how to bridge political divides.WOMAN: President-Elect Biden has made it very clear that he wants to reach across the aisle.MAN2: And then that's gonna be us turning towards each other and seeing a common humanity that we struggle to see now.MAN3: We need to stop talking about them so much and start talking with each other and about our shared condition, and our shared condition is one of deep divides.Well, gosh, who can argue about that? Who doesn't want two adversarial sides to come together, like warring tribes on opposite shores, connected at last by a bridge of understanding? That's the premise, for example, of Nathan Borney's new book, Bridge Builders: Bringing People Together in a Polarized Age. And also for the Listen First Project, aimed at healing America by quote, “building relationships and bridging divides.” It's just so eminently reasonable.NARRATOR: The magic of a bridge is that in a way it allows you to walk on air. Bridges provide pathways through the sky so that you can get from here to there sort of flying over, without going through the river or down into the valley or across those railroad tracks.OK, that's from a documentary about actual bridges, many of them now crumbling from decades of neglect. But, yes, in the political context, too, imagine: walking on air, having all obstacles magically averted — not with trusses or girders or cables — but common interest and goodwill.Crowd noiseBecause I suppose there is no dispute too thorny that opposing sides can't, with courage and foresight, broker a deal.CheeringYep, in 1939, evidently people actually shouted “hooray.” The cheers were for British Prime Minster Neville Chamberlain, returning to London from Munich, where he had bridged the divide between Great Britain and Nazi Germany.CHAMBERLAIN: This morning I had another talk with the German chancellor Herr Hitler, and here is the paper, which bears his name upon it as well as mine. Also, for all the folks hunching over their radio sets, politicians of the day spoke very, very, haltingly — especially when they were walking on air and wanting every syllable understood. Chamberlain believed history would reward him for “peace in our time.” But what history heard was Britain bartering the freedom of three million Czechs for Hitler's promise to end European aggression, which is sort of not how it played out, Third Reich-wise. Chamberlain's craven devil's bargain is now virtually synonymous with appeasement. There are less notorious, but nonetheless catastrophic examples in more recent history.CLINTON: We must be bound together by a faith more powerful than any doctrine that divides us — by our belief in progress, our love of liberty, and our relentless search for common ground.Fresh off a failed impeachment in 1998, Bill Clinton desperately needed to broaden his support, reaching across the House aisle to Newt Gingrich's brand new Republican majority.CLINTON: We know big government does not have all the answers. We know there's not a program for every problem. And we have to give the American people one that lives within its means. … For too long our welfare system has undermined the values of family and work, instead of … I challenge every state to match federal policy to assure that serious violent criminals serve at least 85 percent of their sentence. … Criminal gang members and drug dealers are destroying the lives of decent tenants. From now on, the rule for residents who commit crime and peddle drugs should be one strike and you're out.Spending cuts, paring welfare rolls, ruinous Wall Street deregulation, mandatory sentencing — it was the strategy called triangulation. They now call it neoliberalism. In terms of social and economic justice, it should have been labeled Czechoslovakia. When Clinton spoke to the nation, his political nemesis Gingrich sat behind him, grinning and madly applauding. When a bridge is built without understanding of the forces at play, calamity follows. White flight. Poverty. The subprime disaster. The incarceration state. Until finally collapse.NARRATOR: Tacoma Bridge Washington, opened only a few months ago, was built at a cost of over six million dollars. But misfortune overtakes the great structure. These are some of the most amazing pictures ever recorded by a newsreel — the actual collapse of the world's third largest suspension bridge.Bill Clinton's Chamberlain moment at least happened in the good old days, when the adversary was merely fixated on small government, deregulation and the creation of a prison industrial complex. Now the Republican Party has turned into the QAnon Klux Klan, a cult governing —and inciting and fundraising — by Big Lies and their countless corollaries. Here's Sen. Rand Paul responding to ABC's George Stephanopoulous, who had referred to the rulings of 85 courts, 50 state secretaries of state and Trump's handmaiden Attorney General William Barr that the presidential election was not influenced by fraud.SEN. PAUL: But at the same time, I'm not willing just to sit here and say, Oh everybody on the Republican side's a liar and there is no fraud. No, there were lots of problems and there were secretaries of state who illegally changed the law and that needs to be fixed and I'm gonna work hard to fix it and I won't be cowed by people saying, Oh, you're a liar. That's the problem with the media today is they say all Republicans are liars and everything we say is a lie. This is what comes of tying your party's fortunes to the killer clown, Dr. Clorox.TRUMP: It's gonna go way … this is gonna go away … it's gonna go, it's gonna leave, it's gonna be gone … well, I feel about vaccines like I feel about tests, this is gonna go away without a vaccine … it'll go away at some point, it'll go away … at some point this stuff goes away.Same guy who told the Proud Boys to stand by, and whose cabin boy Sen. Lindsey Graham has just had it with the 1619 Project and Black Lives Matter.SEN. GRAHAM: So, our systems are not racist. America is not a racist country. And then there is the January 6 insurrection.REP. CLYDE: There was an undisciplined mob, there were some rioters and some who committed acts of vandalism, but let me be clear. There was no insurrection and to call it an insurrection, in my opinion, is a boldfaced lie.Are you going to believe Republican Congressman Andrew Clyde of Georgia, or your lying ears?NEWSCASTER: Then, sheer terror (screams). An officer crushed against a door frame, pleading for help (screams). They've spent decades denying climate calamity. They trade in lunatic conspiracy theories about Democratic pedophiles. They deny Covid's death toll and the need for vaccines and masks. They tell their base that the media and the left want to enslave them. They use the Big Steal lie to pass racist laws suppressing the Black vote in red states. And now they try to gaslight the world about the Capitol insurrection we all saw live on TV.Tell me again, why do we want to be civil with these people? As the Tacoma Narrows Bridge proved, civil engineering can lead to disaster. And by no means is the politics of going it alone a novel approach. Each episode we begin Bully Pulpit with a clip of Teddy Roosevelt. This episode, let's end with Teddy, as well.ROOSEVELT: I would prefer to work with moderate, with rational, conservatives, provided only that they do in good faith strive forward toward the light. But when they halt and turn their backs to the light, and sit with the scorners on the seats of reaction, then I must part company with them. Biden vs Trump - It's Not Over. The media has declared a man with dementia as the President Elect. Trump has refused to concede. Is Trump just being Trump or is there a series of events that could result in Trump winning? What is the Transition Integrity Project and what did they predict? How does the electoral college work? What can we expect if Trump does prevail? CALL 619-638-8559 on Friday Dec 11th at 8:00 PM. Guest host Rocco P.
After all these attacks to Trump It's how he's considered a bigot even a sexist. I will be giving him an ovation that he deserves, but the star is my best friend, Jesus.
We're not ones to subscribe to popular world views, even those held on the left. So, in our latest episode, Green and Red dive deep into the history and politics of the American Ruling Class, coups at other points in history, and the great coup of 2020 (that wasn't). We start off with a conversation about what is a coup and not a coup. We talk about coups in places like Indonesia in 1965, Chile in 1973, and in other points of history; and how the end of the Trump regime has yet to constitute what is considered "coup." Part of the reason, besides Trump's own ineptitude, is that America's elites (Wall St. Big Tech, the Chamber of Commerce, the Military Elites, etc.) are done with him and recognize that he has created an era of economic and social turmoil not seen since 1968. As historical background, we discuss the work of noted scholars Thomas Ferguson and Nomi Prins on the politics of Wall Street and America's Ruling Class. We look at the reaction of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jaime Dimon and other bankers, and the military elites to the results of the election. We also pay tribute to women leaders in the environmental movements, Karen Silkwood and Judy Bari, who bridged the false divide of labor and environmentalism as organizers. After a midterm, the #1 quick news podcast is back! In our return, I talk about the fiasco Trump left behind in Omaha, some decisions by the Supreme Court about voting (VOTE EARLY), Tucker Carlson's completely made-up claims about criminal mastermind/ANTIFA General Hunter Biden, Miles Taylor being revealed as "Anonymous", and more! How much Quick News do you want during the week? VOTE HERE: https://forms.gle/eUW2ur8rHkBsu8kr5 ----more----Subscribe for free on your favorite podcast platform: https://kite.link/QuickNews Mostly-correct transcript:Well hey there everyone; my apologies for the unscheduled change of plans yesterday. It’s that time of the year again for us college students: time for midterms. So I’m not exaggerating, the bulk of my day yesterday from 10am to 10pm was this programming midterm, and that obviously took much longer than I anticipated. Luckily, there wasn’t too much happening in terms of huge world events, and the news dump didn’t happen until this morning, so we’ve got a busy show ahead, but we didn’t miss too much yesterday. But first, I should mention I’ll have a bit of an explanation at the end for you in case you’ve been listening to the show and hearing some weird advertisements, and I apologize for that as well. But hey, let’s get caught up! OMAHASo, on Monday night, Donald Trump held a rally in Omaha, Nebraska after bringing his petri dish through my neck of the woods, which we’ll get to in a second. But, as it turns out, that Omaha event and its aftermath became a pretty good metaphor the whole Trump presidency, especially his handling of the coronavirus. So for this rally, they decided to hold it at a remote location that didn’t have enough parking, so their idea was to send people to other parking lots about 3 miles away and then have busses running to bring them to the rally location. Well, because this is Nebraska, so it was only a two-lane road that went between the two locations, and the security of everything always causes congestion anyway, so these busses were not making the rounds very quickly after the event. On a night when it was about 30 degrees Fahrenheit, waiting for hours to get back to their cars, and having a significant number of elderly supporters in attendance, I’m sure you can see how this was a problem. And the best part: Trump booked out of there right away, of course, and it was reported that Air Force One was wheels up and leaving Nebraska at about 9:30pm. The event site was not fully cleared out until 12:30am. In the end, medics had to treat 30 people, and 7 were hospitalized. So, of course, Trump came in for a short event, spread his virus to his supporters, got out of dodge quickly, and left the mess up to local officials. If that isn’t symbolic, I don’t know what is. To sum it up even better, here’s Mayor Pete on Fox News... SUPREME COURTThere have been a few developments in the US Supreme Court the past couple of days, so let’s take a look at that. In a couple of big decisions for democracy, the Court decided not to hear an appeal by Pennsylvania Republicans that were challenging their state’s decision to accept ballots up to 3 days after the election, even if there’s no legible postmark. Then, the Court ruled in favor of the North Carolina rule to accept ballots up to 9 days after election day, as long as they’re postmarked by election day. Obviously, considering that they made that decision not to allow Wisconsin to accept ballots received after the deadline, you could say I was a little bit miffed that on the very next day, TWO cases went that way. But overall, good for democracy. However, I would still say to make sure it gets there by election day, if at all possible. At this point, I would hand-deliver it if that’s a possibility for you, just so you don’t leave anything to chance, but also because of these two small notes. First, in Pennsylvania, state officials notified the Supreme Court that the state has told country boards to “securely segregate” ballots received after election day, in case of future legal action. Second, Trump campaign filed a suit against the secretary of state in Minnesota, trying to force him to segregate ballots as well. I don’t know about you, but that sounds suspicious as hell to me. I hate hate hate that language about “in case of future legal action”. We were lucky in these cases that Amy Coney Barrett sat out these rulings, which is maybe the first principled thing she’s done in her life, but I don’t know if she’ll do the same if Republicans try to sue to stop these ballots from being counted if it’s clear that Trump is losing on election night, so make sure your ballot is there by election day, just as a rule of thumb. Another thing I want to stress about voting before election day is that if we all get our votes in before then, there’s a real chance that the margin of votes will be too large for Trump to overcome with election day turnout. For example, in Michigan, a recent poll found that of voters who were voting early in person or by mail, 75% were voting for Biden, while 21% were voting for Trump. For people who were planning on voting on election day, like 58% said they were voting for Trump, and 31ish percent said they were voting for Biden. If you just look at those numbers, you realize that Trump cannot make up that difference. A 75-25 split is incredible, and just based on the amount of voters left in Michigan, they wouldn’t be enough to give Trump the lead. So, if this is the case everywhere, we can all have an election night that keeps our blood pressure within reasonable levels, and not like it would be if this is a nail-biter. TUCKERHey, let’s take a timeout from regular news for some comedic relief. Take a listen to this clip of Tucker Carlson from last night and see if you also see some problems with this…I mean, wow, his writer really outdid themselves with that one. I mean, he went to all of the trouble of adding in fake times to when his documents were “stolen”, and this is a podcast so you can’t see me, but I’m making the biggest air quotes of my life around the word “stolen”. Why do I know this is all a sham? Because it’s 2020, not 1950! You’re telling me that Tucker’s producer couldn’t have sent them in an email? Or that they sent the original documents through the mail, without making any copies? I mean, for the love of god, even if you didn’t want to use email, how long have fax machines been around? What a joke. And by the way, Tucker’s not that dumb, and Fox lawyers aren’t that dumb, so they know that if they show fake documents about a former Vice President and presidential candidate, they’re going to get sued. It’s much better for themselves and their viewers if they just make up this story about documents getting stolen, and not just any documents, documents about the evil criminal mastermind and commander of the Antifa army, Hunter Biden, that definitely would have sunk Joe Biden’s campaign and gave Trump a landslide victory. Give me a BREAK, people. This is such a crock of BS. ANONYMOUSWell, even though I spent all day yesterday programming for a midterm, I still had a better day than Miles Taylor. I’ve mentioned Miles before; he’s the former chief of staff for the Secretary of Homeland Security who has since come out and strongly opposed Donald Trump in a helpful way, at least I think. Well, he revealed yesterday that he was the “senior Trump administration official” who wrote that op-ed in the New York Times who was only known as “Anonymous” (and I had forgotten that Anonymous had also written a book). For a refresher, that op-ed talked about how this official was part of a “resistance” inside the Trump administration that consisted of people acting as the adults in the room; he basically said that they were actively trying to prevent Trump from doing the craziest stuff that he wanted to. This reveal got everyone talking, and it wasn’t long before he started taking fire from both sides after the announcement. He said he wrote it anonymously because he wanted to force Trump to respond specifically to the allegations he made in the op-ed and book, instead of doing what Trump always does, which is attack the person who is talking badly about him. Miles is certainly right about that, Trump does that all the time, but he also attacks the media for using anonymous sources and says it’s just fake news, so it wasn’t going to work great either way. At the same time, there’s been discussion about whether the New York Times was right to call him a “senior Trump administration official” since he was just a chief of staff to a cabinet secretary. That said, he was in all of the important meetings, especially the ones about border policy and child separation, and chief of staff is actually an important position, so I think it’s probably okay, but considering that people were thinking it was James Mattis or John Kelly, I can see why people feel cheated. Usually, when someone says something anonymously in this public of a fashion, it means their name is bigger than the title of anonymous, and in this case, this mystery actually made the story more important than it would have been if it was written by some guy named Miles Taylor. So that was the criticism from both the left and the right, and then Trump’s crowd piled on even more by saying that this was treason and that he should be arrested immediately, which is just ridiculous. Overall, as someone who still defends his old boss Kirstjen Nielsen and kind of defends the child separation policy, it’s hard to feel to badly for him. That said, I do believe the fact that he’s spoken out publicly is admirable and came with a lot of risk for him and his family, and it has helped create permission for Republicans to vote for Biden, I think I’ll take a page out of Nelson Mandela’s playbook and skip tearing this guy to pieces; we have bigger fish to fry right now. TRUMP CLIPSLet’s circle back to that Trump campaign stop here in Wisconsin. We’ll start with Trump reminding us about Canada’s national anthem…I just don’t understand how anyone can watch this stuff and think “wow, this guy is really the smartest guy in the room. He’s such a good businessman.” Like I’ve said before, he’s like that one family member at Thanksgiving that you have to watch what you say when you’re around them. Literally one phrase set him off: national anthem. And god knows how he got onto O’Canada in the first place. But that one phrase completely distracted him from his original point, which was NAFTA and trade deals, and probably how he made the best deals. He’s the definition of scatterbrained. For this next one, if you follow Aaron Rupar on Twitter, he’s the guy who tweets video clips of everything that’s important politics-wise (he works for the media company Vox), then you’ll know that he has this personal pet peeve when it comes to Trump…It’s easy to miss, but Trump always talks about “hydrosonic” missiles at his rallies these days. Literally like every one, and that might sound normal, until you realize that hydrosonic missiles don’t exist. They’re hypersonic missiles; hydrosonic is a type of toothbrush, but of course the stable genius president can’t tell the two apart. And he wants us to believe Joe Biden is the senile one. And speaking of senile…Vanquish the vaccine? No, I think we want to make the vaccine and vanquish the virus. If you listen to that again, you can tell he realizes he really messed up, because he tries to cover it up by saying “All of it. We’ll get rid of all of this and go back to normal”. Okay, gramps. Well, he also made another appeal to all you “suburban women” out there; I bet you’re glad you’re Donald Trump’s favorite voting group. Trump wants you to know that he really wants your vote…Is that like, a threat? But hey, if he can’t threaten you into voting for him, then maybe this will change your mind…I’m sure that’s what strong-willed, successful women want to be told: it’s all about your husbands getting back to work. But hey, if he still doesn’t have your vote, I’m sure the way he introduced Senator Martha McSally of Arizona yesterday at his rally will really win you over…And that’s how he talks to someone who sold her soul and supports Trump endlessly. The truth is, this is just like Joe Biden said the other day, Trump has this 1950s view of the suburbs, and he believes women should be doing all the stereotypical cooking and cleaning. Remember how he kept using “suburban housewives” for a while? I mean, come on. But if you’re not sold yet on how dumb Trump is, let’s end this segment with another example of how he always, always, always projects his own insecurities onto other people, take a listen to this claim that he’s the pro-science candidate… KUSHNERThankfully, I wasn’t the only one who had some outrage towards Jared Kushner’s comments from the other day. President Obama was campaigning in Florida on Monday, and he had this to say about Kushner’s comments about Black Americans... ENDWell, I think that’s where I’ll cut us off for today. Again, thanks for your understanding about yesterday’s unscheduled cancellation and all of that, but it got me thinking: I know the show is called Quick News Daily, but would you guys prefer to have the show like 2-3 times a week instead? The weekly recap show is almost always the most popular and downloaded episode, so I’m just thinking, maybe when the news is more “boring” the election, you might want it every other day or something like that. To let me know, I created this survey, so here’s your chance to really influence the show! Also, I wanted to mention that I joined an advertising platform that automatically inserts ads based on your location, your audience size, that sort of thing, so if you’re like me and got an ad about opening up schools at all costs and “Democrats want to shut us down” and all that, I definitely apologize. I went back on the platform and immediately turned off all of the ads from the government and politics category. On the one hand, I would love for that group to waste their money advertising to you guys, who obviously don’t believe that nonsense, but on the other hand, I didn’t want it to seem like I was endorsing that, so here we are. Anyways, stay safe, make that plan to vote, there’s only a few days left until the election, so push through to the end, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow.

Last week, President Trump experienced one of the most challenging interviews of his presidency when he sat down with Jonathan Swan from Axios. Swan asked some tough follow-up questions, and Trump’s responses demonstrated that he is not used to this level of pushback. What’s more, the interview highlighted the fact that the White House’s media strategy revolves around reassuring the president rather than getting the facts straight. The gang breaks down the interview and Trump’s answers on the latest podcast. According to Jonah, the videography of the interview was also damning for Trump: “It was sort of like one of these twenty-something consultants from McKinsey going and interviewing the paper mill owner who still uses the fax machine.” If he knew what he was walking into, why did Trump agree to this interview in the first place? Our hosts have some theories. For weeks, the president has been telling his supporters that mail-in ballots will rig the election in every state except for … Florida? Trump knows many of his supporters in Florida are elderly Americans who will vote absentee. But as Sarah points out, telling all of his other supporters that mail-in voting is rigged might just work in his favor. Polls show that there will be a partisan divide in this election when it comes to in-person versus mail-in voting, with Democrats more likely to vote by mail. What these polls aren’t telling you is that a not-small percentage of mail-in ballots that are likely to be invalidated for technical reasons, especially given most states are wildly unprepared for the sheer number of mail-in ballots that are coming their way. Whatever happens, the election is going to be ugly. Tune in to today’s podcast for some punditry on how American civil society has mishandled the pandemic, a debate over whether calling female political candidates “ambitious” is inherently sexist, and some bickering over America’s best sit-down diners. Mornings on the Mall Thursday, May 21, 2020 Hosts; Vince Coglianese and Mary Walter Executive Producer: Heather Hunter Guests: Liz Sheld, Cal Thomas, Erik Kiilunen, Tom Fitton and Shelley Luther SHOW RUNDOWN: 5 AM HOUR: 5-A/B/C -- 5:05 AM - NEW VIRUS GUIDANCE: CDC now says coronavirus ‘does not spread easily’ on surfaces. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says the coronavirus “does not spread easily” through touching surfaces or objects. In early March, the federal health agency was warning that it “may be possible” to pass on the virus from contaminated surfaces, according to Fox News. Its guidelines now include a section on ways the virus doesn’t easily spread — including from touching surfaces or objects. “It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes,” the CDC webpage states. “This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.” Other ways the virus doesn’t easily spread is from animals to people or people to animals, the CDC’s updated webpage states. AND LAST MONTH... FDA says there is no evidence groceries can transmit coronavirus Your groceries apparently can’t transmit the coronavirus. There’s no evidence to suggest that COVID-19 can spread through food, or what it’s wrapped in, Dr. Stephen Hahn, commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, said Thursday. “We have no evidence that the virus, the Covid-19 virus, is transmitted by food or by food packaging,” Hahn said during a CNN town hall. [...] As for disinfecting your groceries, that may also be overkill, according to the FDA. VIRUS AND SMIMMING POOLS: ‘No Evidence’ That Coronavirus Spreads In Swimming Pools, According To CDC. As temperatures inch upward and Memorial Day quickly approaches, pools across the country remain closed due to coronavirus restrictions. Many are likely concerned about going for a swim, citing the possibility that coronavirus could be spread. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, says that there is “no evidence” that the virus can be spread to people through pool water, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas, as long as social-distancing measures are taken. “Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water,” the CDC online guideline says. Individuals, pool owners and operators should still take the steps to ensure that the virus isn’t spread, including following local and state guidelines that determine whether pools can reopen. 5-D/E -- LATEST RUSSIA COLLUSION NEWS: CHUCK ROSS: FBI Offered To Pay Christopher Steele ‘Significantly’ To Dig Up Dirt On Michael Flynn. An FBI offer to pay former British spy Christopher Steele to collect intelligence on Michael Flynn in the weeks before the 2016 election has been one of the more overlooked revelations in a Justice Department inspector general’s report released in December. The reference to the FBI proposal, which was made in an Oct. 3, 2016, meeting in an unidentified European city, has received virtually no press attention. But it might have new significance following the recent release of government documents that show that Steele peddled an unfounded rumor that Flynn had an extramarital affair with a Russian woman in the United Kingdom. WAPO: Michael Flynn’s name was never masked in FBI document on his communications with Russian ambassador. But in the FBI report about the communications between the two men, Flynn’s name was never redacted, former U.S. officials said. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) announced this week that he wants to subpoena witnesses over the unmasking of Flynn, as part of a larger effort to unearth information about the FBI’s investigation of Trump campaign officials. On Tuesday, he sent a letter to acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell asking why a declassified list of Obama administration officials who had made requests that revealed Flynn’s name in intelligence documents “did not contain a record showing who unmasked” Flynn’s identity in relation to “his phone call with” the Russian diplomat, Sergey Kislyak. Rice penned Inauguration Day email at White House counsel’s direction. On Jan. 20, 2017, the day of President Trump’s inauguration, Rice penned a memo to herself documenting a Jan. 5 meeting with Obama and others, during which he provided guidance on how law enforcement should address Russian interference in the 2016 presidential race. Parts of the email had been released previously, but the full unredacted email was declassified and made public this week. At the meeting, she, Obama, former FBI Director James Comey and other intelligence officials discussed her successor Michael Flynn’s communications with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Rice spokeswoman Erin Pelton told Fox News on Wednesday that Rice documented the contents of that meeting at the direction of Obama’s White House counsel, Neil Eggleston. (THREAD) NYT: Supreme Court Blocks Release of Full Mueller Report for Now. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday temporarily blocked the release of parts of the report prepared by Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel who investigated Russian interference in the 2016 election. The court’s order, concerning a request by the House Judiciary Committee for grand jury materials that the Justice Department had blacked out from the report provided to Congress, could mean that the full report would not be made available before the 2020 election. The Supreme Court’s brief order gave no reasons for blocking an appeals court ruling ordering the release of the full report while the justices considered whether to hear the case. It ordered the Justice Department to file a petition seeking review by June 1. There were no noted dissents. The House told the justices that it sought information about whether President Trump had obstructed justice, a topic on which Mr. Mueller failed to reach a conclusion. MICHAEL COHEN TO BE RELEASED EARLY FROM JAIL: President Trump's longtime personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen will be released from federal prison today and is expected to serve the remainder of his sentence at home. Cohen has been serving a federal prison sentence at FCI Otisville in New York after pleading guilty to numerous charges, including campaign finance fraud and lying to Congress. Cohen will be released on furlough with the expectation that he will transition to home confinement for the remainder of his sentence. 6 AM HOUR 6-A -- 6:05 AM -- INTERVIEW - LIZ SHELD - Senior Editor, American Greatness -- discuss yesterday's "Karens" in the media and the "coronavirus Karens" Mika Melts Down, Goes Full 'Karen': Brzezinski Demands Twitter Erase 'Sick, Disgusting' President Trump from Its Platform... One of the most common Karen stereotypes is that of a white middle-aged woman, typically American, who displays aggressive behavior when she is obstructed from getting her way; such women are often depicted as demanding to "speak to the manager" and sometimes have a variation of the bob cut. The origins of Karen as an Internet meme predominately date back to an anonymous Reddit user. (Wikipedia link) 6-B/C - VOTING NEWS: MICHIGAN MAIL IN BALLOTS: President Trump threatened to hold back federal funding from two election battleground states that are making it easier to vote by mail during the pandemic. He later backed away somewhat from that threat but stuck with his claim that widespread voting by mail promotes "a lot of illegality." Trump targeted Michigan and Nevada on Wednesday. At first he claimed Michigan was sending out more than 7 million mail-in ballots, but after criticism he corrected that to say mail-in ballot "applications." Federal judge rules in favor of mail-in ballots in Texas, says 'lack of immunity' for COVID-19 a physical condition. Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general, said Tuesday that his office would appeal a federal court’s preliminary injunction that allows all registered voters in the state to apply to vote by mail while the country fights the coronavirus pandemic. “The district court’s opinion ignores the evidence and disregards well-established law,” the Texas Republican said in a statement, according to the Texas Tribune. "We will seek an immediate review by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals." The paper pointed out that the Lone Star State’s current election law only grants permission for those over 65, who have a disability or plan to be abroad at the time of the vote to apply for a mail-in ballot. Democrats are largely in favor of the voting alternative while Republicans have been critical of the option due to the risk of voter fraud. Judge Fred Biery, a district court judge in San Antonio, sided Tuesday with the state’s Democratic party. "The Court finds such fear and anxiety is inextricably intertwined with voters' physical health. Such apprehension will limit citizens' rights to cast their votes in person. The Court also finds that lack of immunity from COVID-19 is indeed a physical condition," he wrote. (Fox News link) Montgomery County Council calls on Maryland's State Board of Elections to hold emergency meeting to protect voting rights. Council expresses concerns over the distribution of ballots for Maryland’s June 2 primary election ROCKVILLE, Md., May 20, 2020—Montgomery County Councilmembers sent a letter to the Maryland State Board of Elections expressing their frustration and concern about the distribution of ballots for Maryland’s June 2 primary election. Many registered voters in Montgomery County have reported that they have not received their ballots and have reached out to the Council to voice their concerns. All Councilmembers signed the letter. “It is extremely concerning, this close to the June 2nd Maryland primary election, that there are widespread issues in delivering the appropriate absentee ballot to voters,” said Council Vice President Tom Hucker. “This is unacceptable and is increasing public anxiety and eroding confidence in our elections. The State Board of Elections needs to act immediately to ensure voters a fair and timely primary and general election. We are sending this letter to get more information on this situation and to work with the State Board on this crucial issue.” The Council has requested the Maryland State Board of Elections hold an emergency meeting to address urgent issues relating to the primary election including the timely distribution of ballots to all voters in their preferred language and to ensure that Maryland will administer the 2020 primary and general elections securely and effectively. “The Maryland State Board of Elections must do everything within its power to ensure that by perception and in reality, the coming elections are seen to be fair and just,” said Councilmember Nancy Navarro, who chairs the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee. “The issues that threaten to disenfranchise voters in our county and region must be resolved as soon as possible.” (MoCo Govt link) More Montgomery County ballots being mailed to deceased, non-residents. A few weeks after a man described how his deceased mother was shown to have voted in Montgomery County elections for a decade after her death, another case of an illegal ballot being issued has come to light. Attorney Robin Ficker, a Republican candidate for Maryland governor, reports that his son was mailed a ballot to his old Montgomery County address. Problem: Ficker's son hasn't lived in Montgomery County for 12 years. And as a "live" ballot, it could be illegally filled out and mailed back by someone else. "Election fraud?" Ficker asked in a Facebook post showing the improperly-mailed ballot. "How many of these ballots are being mailed by someone else?" Ficker isn't the only one asking questions. A watchdog group, Judicial Watch, has successfully sued to receive the voter registration information of all Montgomery County voters, after it found there are more names registered to vote than there are eligible voters in the county. In 2018, anomalous voting results were seen at dozens of precincts across Montgomery County in the County Council At-Large race, if not others. The voter universe in that election also increased by about 100,000 voters in only four years since 2014. Local media outlets have not challenged County officials about either issue so far. Leaving ineligible names on the voter rolls is a key source of voter fraud. Anyone who has the names of deceased or non-resident voters can walk into the appropriate polling place, claim to be that person and provide the few details asked for by judges, and cast a ballot illegally using one of those many names. In this year's by-mail elections, these illegal ballots will be mailed out and ripe for the picking by any organized voter fraud operation, further underlining the urgency in cleaning up Montgomery County's dirty voter rolls. (Robert Dyer blog link) Flashback in April: Judicial Watch Victory: Federal Court Orders Maryland to Release Complete Voter Registration Records. (Washington, DC) Judicial Watch announced that a federal court ordered the State of Maryland to produce the voter list for Montgomery County that includes the registered voters’ date of birth. This court ruling is the latest in a series of victories for Judicial Watch in its lawsuit filed July 18, 2017, against Montgomery County and the Maryland State Boards of Elections under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA). Judicial Watch filed suit for the Maryland voter list data after uncovering that there were more registered voters in Montgomery County than citizens over the age of 18 who could legally register (Judicial Watch vs. Linda H. Lamone, et al. (No. 1:17-cv-02006)). Ruling in Judicial Watch’s favor, Judge Hollander said: "Judicial Watch need not demonstrate its need for birth date information in order to facilitate its effort to ensure that the voter rolls are properly maintained. Nevertheless, it has put forward reasonable justifications for requiring birth date information, including using birth dates to find duplicate registrations and searching for voters who remain on the rolls despite “improbable” age." In order to avoid turning over the dates of birth for Maryland voters, the Maryland Administrator of Elections, Linda Lamone, directed her staff to remove date of birth as a field on the voter registration application. Judge Hollander ruled that Lamone could not do this, saying: "Because full voter birth dates appear on completed voter registration applications, the Administrator may not bypass the Act by unilaterally revising the Application." In August 2019, Judge Hollander ruled in Judicial Watch’s favor in the same case, ordering the State of Maryland to produce voter list data for Montgomery County. Judicial Watch is the national leader in enforcing the National Voters Registration Act. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said that leaders in Northern Virginia were “following the data” in determining not to move into Phase 1 of the reopening plan with the rest of the state. The city of Alexandria and Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, which make up most of Northern Virginia and all border either the District of Columbia or Maryland, have the state’s worst coronavirus case numbers. Local leaders told Mr. Northam in a letter that they weren’t ready to enter Phase 1 of reopening until at least May 29. “We haven’t set any particular timeline,” the Democratic governor said. “We will continue to follow that daily. We will be in communication with those (local) leaders, and when they are comfortable, and when the data supports a movement into Phase 1, we will do so.” Arlington County cancels summer camps for 2020. ARLINGTON, Va. - As the novel coronavirus lingers in the Northern Virginia region heading into late fall, Arlington County announced on Wednesday that it is canceling all summer camps for the season. In a statement from the county, officials said the decision was difficult to make. They noted that the camps could not be held with “proper social distancing and appropriate cleaning protocols or other safety measures,” and the county was not confident that it could safely host a camp session. Officials noted there too many variables needed to be accounted for ultimately. “We recognize how important camps are to our residents, and we are truly saddened to have to cancel for the summer. Ultimately, it is the best decision for the safety and health of our community. We will continue to explore opportunities to provide programs and services as national, state and local guidelines allow. We appreciate your patience as we work through this difficult time,” said Parks & Recreation Director Jane Rudolph. Anyone who was registered for an Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation camp will receive a full refund. Anyone who signed up for a camp with a county contractor should reach out to the contractor directly for information regarding refunds. (Fox5DC link) Montgomery officials say county may start to reopen within a week. Maryland’s most populous county said Wednesday that it may lift some social distancing restrictions within the next week, another tentative step toward reopening the Washington region as the rates of novel coronavirus infections and deaths show signs of slowing. “We are moving in the right direction,” Travis Gayles, head of Montgomery County’s health department, said about plans to join other parts of the state in partially lifting restrictions on gatherings and nonessential businesses. Tom Brady launched a new “immunity” multivitamin supplement this week — and critics quickly tackled the quarterback for the timing of the release during the coronavirus pandemic. Brady, 42, newly signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, announced the release of the “immunity blend supplement,” called Protect, through his company, TB12 Sports, on social media Monday. “Over the years, I’ve learned how important it is to be proactive in taking care of my own body,” Brady said in a video posted to Instagram. “I’m really proud to announce this amazing new product from TB12 that will provide you guys exactly what you need to stay healthy, strong and resilient for whatever comes your way.” It is sold as a 30-day supply, or 60 tablets, for $45, according to the TB12 website. Critics bashed him on Twitter for the not-so-coincidental timing of the release — and for capitalizing on people’s fears amid the pandemic. In Brady’s new home state, nearly 47,000 coronavirus cases and over 2,000 related deaths have been reported, according to the Florida Department of Health. “Oh Tom this is so disappointing,” Julia Offord Pearman tweeted. “The marketing of this product is clearly playing on people’s fears over Covid and a belief that the immune system just needs a boost to recover from it. If it’s an athlete recovery supplement say that, don’t play up to people’s fears about Covid.”“What does your product ‘PROTECT’ us from Tom?” said a person with the handle @katherine_jj6. “Does it protect the millions out of work from being duped to pay a ridiculous amount of money for this? This is a new low for you and [business partner] Alex [Guerrero].” “The reason Tom Brady doesn’t have coronavirus isn’t an immune boosting supplement, it’s because he’s obscenely rich and can isolate unlike delivery drivers, cleaners, meat workers, grocery store workers, nurses and doctors,” wrote Dr. Kate Gregorevic, who identified herself as a geriatrician. “Using this crisis to enrich himself is disgusting.” But TB12 CEO Johns Burns told Yahoo! Sports that “now more than ever, it’s important to have daily support for a healthy immune response as our bodies are subject to constant stressors that deplete its resources.” Brady’s company touts the drug for “supporting natural killer cells” and “replenishing antibodies post-exercise,” helping to “activate your immune system and counter stress-induced immune suppression,” according to a product description. He has billboards all over Michigan with the message "All Business is Essential." Businessman Calls for Peaceful Economic Disobedience in Response to Unconstitutional COVID-19 Lockdown. Ahmeek, MI—As reported by the Associated Press, Erik Kiilunen, business owner, entrepreneur, and founder of All Business is Essential, is calling for peaceful economic disobedience against un-constitutional executive orders which have deprived American citizens of their right to attend to their businesses, their livelihoods, and their jobs. Erik Kiilunen is “encouraging business owners of all sizes to engage in Economic Disobedience" by opening their place of business regardless of "executive orders as Michigan and the USA need commerce. Without it, the poverty created by their absence will cause far greater suffering than anything that COVID-19 will ever lead to now. I’ve opened my business as an example to others.” Over the course of a few days, Mr. Kiilunen's GoFundMe page has already amassed tens of thousands in contributions from other Americans who support Mr. Kiilunen's message of economic freedom. As his billboards start to spring up in Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Howell, as well as across the country, Mr. Kiilunen asserts that this is only the beginning. In what is poised to be one of the most fundamentally American uprisings in US history, All Business is Essential is ready to take on anti-constitutional decrees . "All business is essential, and the government, and state governors, do not have the legal authority to pick and choose who has the right to work and feed their families, and who doesn’t....Ask a single mother running a hair salon and using the profits generated to care for her special needs child if her business is essential," says Mr. Kiilunen. 7-B/C -- LATEST ON PELOSI: Speaker Pelosi on President Trump: “It's like a child who comes in with mud on their pants...He comes in with doggy doo on his shoes and everybody who works with him has that on their shoes, too, for a very long time to come." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) expressed confidence Wednesday that the coronavirus stimulus package approved last week will garner enough public backing to force Republicans and the Trump administration to the negotiating table. The $3 trillion Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act would provide funds to local and state government, hazard pay for health care workers and another round of direct cash payments to tens of millions of Americans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the package has “no chance” of passing. Pelosi touts $3.6B vote-by-mail bill, now called ‘Voting at Home,’ after Trump warnings to Michigan, Nevada, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday night touted a $3.6 billion vote-by-mail proposal – which she rechristened “Voting at Home” – adding that the bill also would help bolster the U.S. Postal Service. Pelosi talked about the legislation during an appearance on MSNBC just hours after President Trump warned the states of Michigan and Nevada against implementing absentee-ballot and vote-by-mail plans, arguing the proposals were illegal and could potentially facilitate voter fraud. In both cases, the president threatened to withhold federal dollars from the states if they went ahead with their plans. The legality of using mail ballots is already the basis of a lawsuit in Texas, in which a federal judge sided with Democrats in allowing the forms to be sent out to voters. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton immediately announced his office was appealing the ruling to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Meantime, Trump has repeatedly criticized the Postal Service, calling it a “joke” and claiming it undercharges online retail giants such as Amazon. The president has said he will not support any bailout legislation for the Postal Service if the organization does not raise its service rates to generate more revenue. But in an interview on MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” Pelosi stressed that the Democrats’ proposal was aimed at making voting and shopping more convenient and safe for Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic – allowing them to perform both tasks at home without exposing themselves to risk of contracting the virus. “We’re now calling it ‘Voting at Home’ because that’s really what it’s all about -- enabling people to vote at home,” Pelosi told host Lawrence O’Donnell. (Fox News link) Trump expresses opposition to extending unemployment benefits enacted in response to pandemic. President Trump on Tuesday privately expressed opposition to extending a weekly $600 boost in unemployment insurance for laid-off workers affected by the coronavirus pandemic, according to three officials familiar with his remarks during a closed-door lunch with Republican senators on Capitol Hill. The increased unemployment benefits — paid by the federal government but administered through individual states — were enacted this year as part of a broader $2 trillion relief package passed by Congress. The boost expires this summer, and House Democrats have proposed extending the aid through January 2021. CNN anchor Chris Cuomo mocked President Donald Trump on Monday for announcing that he had been taking anti-malarial drugs as a preventative treatment for coronavirus even though he had also used a version of the drug in his own COVID-19 treatment regimen. In a late Monday tweet after Trump’s announcement, Cuomo responded to a video of Florida police breaking up a block party by saying “No worries. They can just take some chloroquine.” Cuomo also said in the opening of Monday’s Cuomo Prime Time that “the president knows that Hydroxychloroquine is not supported by science. He knows it has been flagged by people in his own administration” and called it a distraction from “his lack of a plan or real solutions.” Cuomo had been using a version of the anti-malarial drug in his own treatment for coronavirus, according to posts about his treatment protocol written by his wife, Cristina, in her wellness magazine “The Purist.” (Daily Caller link) Kayleigh McEnany Rips CNN’s Chris Cuomo For Taking ‘Less Safe Version’ Of Hydroxychloroquine. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany called out CNN anchor Chris Cuomo Wednesday for mocking President Donald Trump for taking hydroxychloroquine after Cuomo took a less safe version of the drug for his coronavirus treatment. “You had Chris Cuomo saying the president knows that hydroxychloroquine is not supported by science, he knows it has been flagged by his own people and he’s using it,” McEnany said at Wednesday’s White House press briefing. “Cuomo mocked the president for this” but “it turns out that Chris Cuomo took a less safe version of it called quinine, which the FDA removed from the market in 2006 because it had serious side effects, including death. So really interesting to have that criticism of the president.” ( Daily Caller link) From Chris Cuomo's wife's blog: I enlisted Dr. Linda Lancaster, who put my husband on a path of natural remedies to strengthen his immune system—and now mine–and it’s working for us. Andrew Cuomo, fails to ask about nursing-home controversy.CNN anchor Chris Cuomo again did not address the growing nursing-home controversy in his latest interview with his brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and instead performed some prop comedy on Wednesday night. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, recently reversed a March 25 order that forced nursing homes to accept patients who tested positive for coronavirus, despite testing deficiencies for both residents and staff. Cuomo signed an executive order on May 11 stopping hospitals from sending infected patients back to nursing homes and ramping up testing for staff. 8-B/C -- FL GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS SLAPS THE MEDIA: Fla. Gov. DeSantis Scorches Media For Dire Florida Predictions: ‘Hell, We’re 8 Weeks Away From That’. Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis unloaded on members of the media Wednesday over their extremely grim predictions for his state, saying that the media “waxed poetically for weeks and weeks” about how bad Florida would look. “Our data is available, our data is transparent, in fact Dr. Birx has talked multiple times about how Florida has the absolute best data, so any insinuation otherwise is just typical partisan narrative trying to be spun,” DeSantis said. “And part of the reason is because you got a lot of people in your profession who waxed poetically for weeks and weeks about how Florida was going to be just like New York: wait two weeks Florida’s going to be next, just like Italy, wait two weeks.” “Well hell, we’re eight weeks away from that, and it hasn’t happened. Not only do we have a lower death rate–well we have way lower deaths generally–we have a lower death rate than the Acela Corridor, DC, everyone up there,” the governor continued. Where Does Ron DeSantis Go to Get His Apology? (By RICH LOWRY/NATIONAL REVIEW) - The Florida governor explains a COVID-19 strategy that has gotten bad press and favorable results. A couple of months ago, the media, almost as one, decided that Governor Ron DeSantis was a public menace who was going to get Floridians killed with his lax response to the coronavirus crisis. In an interview with National Review, DeSantis says he was surprised at “how knee-jerk” the hostile coverage was, but he “also knew that none of these people knew anything about Florida at all, so I didn’t care what they were saying.” The conventional wisdom has begun to change about Florida, as the disaster so widely predicted hasn’t materialized. It’s worth delving into the state’s response — as described by DeSantis and a couple of members of his team — because it is the opposite of the media narrative of a Trump-friendly governor disregarding the facts to pursue a reckless agenda. DeSantis and his team have followed the science closely from the beginning, which is why they forged a nuanced approach, but one that focused like a laser on the most vulnerable population, those in nursing homes. An irony of the national coverage of the coronavirus crisis is that at the same time DeSantis was being made into a villain, New York governor Andrew Cuomo was being elevated as a hero, even though the DeSantis approach to nursing homes was obviously superior to that of Cuomo. Florida went out of its way to get COVID-19-positive people out of nursing homes, while New York went out of its way to get them in, a policy now widely acknowledged to have been a debacle. The media didn’t exactly have their eyes on the ball. “The day that the media had their first big freakout about Florida was March 15th,” DeSantis recalls, “which was, there were people on Clearwater Beach, and it was this big deal. That same day is when we signed the executive order to, one, ban visitation in the nursing homes, and two, ban the reintroduction of a COVID-positive patient back into a nursing home.” DeSantis is bemused by the obsession with Florida’s beaches. When they opened in Jacksonville, it was a big national story, usually relayed with a dire tone. “Jacksonville has almost no COVID activity outside of a nursing-home context,” he says. “Their hospitalizations are down, ICU down since the beaches opened a month ago. And yet, nobody talks about it. It’s just like, ‘Okay, we just move on to the next target.’” 8-D -- 8:35 AM -- INTERVIEW - SHELLEY LUTHER - formerly jailed Dallas salon owner TX SALON OWNER WENT TO MICHIGAN ON MONDAY TO HELP A BARBER REBELLING AGAINST WHITMER’S LOCKDOWN: Dallas salon owner who was jailed over coronavirus rules travels to Michigan to support defiant barber. A Texas salon owner who was sent to jail for opening her business during the coronavirus outbreak called Michigan's governor a "tyrant" on Monday as she stood next to a barber whose license was suspended for cutting hair. "Gretchen, the state of Michigan will vote you out," Shelley Luther declared, referring to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Luther traveled to Owosso, a small Michigan town, to express support for Karl Manke. The 77-year-old barber reopened his shop for more than a week before state regulators suspended his license. Luther, the owner of Salon a la Mode in Dallas, was sentenced to a week in jail for flouting public health orders intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus. She was released less than 48 hours later when Gov. Greg Abbott dropped jail as a possible punishment for violations. "Why does your governor think that it's OK to open up for marijuana, liquor sales?" said Luther, whose boyfriend grew up an hour away in Frankenmuth. "Can't you get an abortion? But you cannot get your hair cut. What is wrong? "Stop being a tyrant," Luther said of the governor. "Open up. You don't get this control. We control you. We have the power." Whitmer has defended the business restrictions as an important way to stop the virus. She relented a bit Monday by announcing plans to reopen bars and restaurants Friday in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, which haven't been hit as hard as the rest of Michigan. (CBS News) ‘Operation Haircut’: Michigan Barbers Defy Lockdown, Offer Haircuts On Capitol Lawn. Anti-lockdown protesters gathered in Lansing on the lawn of the Michigan state capitol Wednesday to get a haircut. With barbershops and salons closed indefinitely due to the state’s coronavirus lockdown, barbers are scheduled to cut hair on the capitol lawn for three hours Wednesday afternoon. The protest, called “operation haircut,” was organized by the Michigan Conservative Coalition, and is the latest example of Michiganders clashing with Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has enacted some of the strictest coronavirus restrictions in the nation. The Michigan Department of State Police threatened to issue citations to those giving or receiving haircuts. “All individuals engaging in haircuts are being educated on the law. Those who do not comply will be cited for disorderly conduct,” the department tweeted. (Daily Caller link) LAST WEEK: Michigan Barber Has Licenses Suspended After Defying Shutdown Orders. State officials said Karl Manke’s decision to reopen his shop during the coronavirus pandemic jeopardized public health and safety. A Michigan barber who reopened his shop in defiance of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s orders had his business and professional licenses suspended, the latest step in his escalating battle with the state. The barber, Karl Manke, 77, who has been cutting hair in Owosso, Mich., for almost 60 years, likened Michigan under Ms. Whitmer, a Democrat, to “a police state.” He said he planned to keep cutting hair, despite the suspension of his licenses. “I’m not closing up; I’m not caving in to this,” he said on Wednesday, adding: “I’m not a rabble-rouser and I’m not a scofflaw. I’m a small-town barber. I just want to make my living.” Mr. Manke is just one of the latest business owners to defy orders to keep their doors closed to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Before you look at these predictions, you should see how accurate my 7 predictions for 2019 were. Also, if you want to watch me talk about this, see it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwI739M9vKU In 2020... 1. Bitcoin will end 2020 above $10,000. Unlike my previous two bitcoin predictions which were perfect (the 80% decline followed by the 100% rise), I'm unsure about 2020. As you can see from my 2030 predictions, I'm bullish long-term for bitcoin, but 2020 is a bit fuzzy. There's a 30% chance that it will soar pass $20,000. On the other hand, after doubling in 2019, it could also be due for a pullback in 2020. There's a 40% chance that it end between $6,000 and $10,000. One thing is almost certain: 2020 will once again see some volatility from bitcoin, as usual. But I expect a healthy gain overall. 2. Mayor Pete Buttigieg will win the Democratic Nomination. At the end of 2019, according to Real Clear Politics, Biden has a solid lead nationally and in Nevada and South Carolina. He also leads in the betting odds. Here's why I think the dark horse Buttigieg will win the nomination. First, he has a good chance of winning Iowa and New Hampshire. Even if he doesn't, he may come in second place. Regardless, he'll get a ton of attention from those finishes. That includes attention from Nevada and South Carolina. Once voters from those two states start taking Mayor Pete seriously, he'll move up in the polls of those two states (and others). Mayor Bloomberg and Biden are both focusing on the marathon; they're willing to give up some wins at the start and they're banking that they can catch up later. On the other hand, momentum is important. The other thing that is important is what I call the Mirror Image Theory. I discuss that idea more in the last 30 minutes of my WanderLearn podcast with Sym Blanchard. Simply put, incoming US Presidents are often mirror images (opposites) of the outgoing President. Just look at the 7 elected presidents. We swing back and forth. So what's the most opposite of Trump? It ain't old-timers like Biden, Warren, and Sanders. It's Buttigieg. 3. Trump will lose the 2020 Election. Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will inspire the lazy voters who sat on their ass in 2016 thinking that Hillary was a shoo-in. The only opponents Trump has a good chance of beating are the "socialist" ones (Sanders and Warren). 4. The US GDP will slide into negative territory (a recession) in the second half of 2020. The US economy has had a nice long run. It will take a break. 5. The S&P 500 will have a flat year. The S&P is around 3,250 now and it will end 2020 around the same place, plus or minus 3%. By 2030... 1. One bitcoin will be worth more than $100,000. I'm not positive about this. Here's how I break down the odds: 60% chance that Bitcoin will be worth over $100,000. 30% chance that Bitcoin will be worth between $30,000 to $100,000 (at least 10% annualized return) 5% chance that Bitcoin will be worth between $8,000 and $30,000. 5% chance that it will be worth less than today. Why? Because Bitcoin today is like the internet in the 1990s: although many people have heard of it, only early adopters and other geeks have it. Once the whole planet learns about it, you'll have a spike in demand, but the supply at this point is effectively fixed. That will result in a price spike. No other good is like bitcoin. If there's a surge in demand in housing, we can build more houses. If people love avocados, we can plant more avocados. If everyone wants gold, we can dig out more gold (or see how accurate my 7 predictions for 2019 were). Moreover, from a long-term monetary perspective, the US and Europe haven't had high inflation since the 1970s. We're due. But this time, the supremacy of the US dollar may not weather the storm as well as it survived the 1970s. This time, China and other powers will unseat the USD as the sole, global reserve currency. A basket of currencies may take over. In the 2020s, some countries will hold some of their reserves in bitcoin. They will shift away some of their US treasury bills and adopt bitcoin - not completely, but partially. Just like they will hold some euro, yen, and Swiss francs. The only reason bitcoin may become worthless is if most major governments of the world collude to ban it and push it underground, thereby criminalizing it. However, even that won't make it completely worthless. Cocaine is illegal everywhere, but it has tremendous value in the black market. And bitcoin is easier to trade than cocaine. As one bitcoin analyst said, "In this century, Bitcoin is either heading toward $1 million or to zero. It's highly unlikely that in 2050, the price of bitcoin will be where it is today." 2. The CPI will show that the USA experiences double-digit inflation sometime in this decade. Maybe it will be in 2025, but at some point in the 2020s, the CPI (which measures inflation) will soar above 10% for the first time since 1982. 3. One ounce of gold will be worth over $5,000. It's about $1,500 at the end of 2019. 4. Syria will be a hot tourist destination. Expect that over 20 million tourists will visit Syria in the 2020s. 5. China will undergo a revolution. Here are my odds: 70% chance that the communist party will finally fall or be substantially weakened. 20% chance that China reverses course and becomes far more authoritarian. 10% chance that little changes. 6. North Korea finally gets freedom. It can't remain the least free place in the world forever. 7. The USA will have its first female president. They have three chances to pull that off in the 2020s: 2020, 2024, and 2028. When will we get our first atheist President? It seems that we'll get a gay Muslim before that happens. 8. South Africa's GDP per capita ranking will fall. Right now, South Africa has the 7th highest GDP per capita in Africa. I predict that in the 2020s, their ranking will drop to 8th or 9th. Namibia and/or Algeria will pass it. Its long-term fall from the #1 position in the continent will continue. 9. Facebook will be less important and powerful than it is today. Facebook will still be a major player, just like AT&T, IBM, GM, and Microsoft are important corporations today. However, just like those four companies are no longer in their prime, Facebook will also have a relative decline. I wish I could have a metric to measure this, but I think it will be pretty obvious whether I'm right or wrong. Indeed, it's likely that Google, Amazon, and Netflix will all struggle with new rivals. But I think Facebook is the most vulnerable. Today, there's at least one small company that nobody knows that will become a household name in 2030. I wish I knew what company that is! 10. We will land humans on Mars. But they will die there. 11. I will have visited all the countries in the world I've visited 123 out of 193 now. It would be easy to visit the remaining 70 countries. That's just 7 countries per year. However, what slows me down is my silly desire to write books about it. Here's the rough plan: 2020-2022: West and Central Asia 2023-2026: East Asia 2027-2030: Oceania, Caribbean, and South America.
Hello! And welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom. Today’s guest is… Stephen M. Walt, professor of international affairs Harvard University’s Kennedy School, columnist at Foreign Policy magazine and author of several books on foreign affairs. I saw Stephen speak in person at LSE a few weeks ago and, after hearing Stephen talk on whether the U.S. could have a successful foreign policy again, I had to get him on the pod. The timing couldn’t have been better as it came days after Donald Trump sporadically decided to withdraw troops from northern Syria, leaving his Kurdish allies to be butchered by Turkish forces. Stephen and I took it all the way back to the early 2000s to figure out where the U.S. went wrong, and what events led to the U.S. still being at war with the Taliban in Afghanistan 18 years later. Below is a post-game of everything we covered. Enjoy 🤓Like Me, PleaseBefore you read on, please like this edition of Inside The Newsroom by clicking the ❤️ below the title. That way I’ll appear in clever algorithms and more people will be able to read. Cheers. Can the U.S. Still Have a Successful Foreign Policy? The simple answer to this complicated question is yes. Measuring how successful foreign policies are can be put down to a) whether the U.S. (or any country for that matter) has made another country a safer and more stable place b) whether the U.S. has made more friends than enemies after its operation and c) whether its enemies are stronger or weaker. Some say the last time the U.S. had a successful foreign policy was when the Cold War ended back in 1991, but since then things have largely been a failure. Starting with Bill Clinton when he took over the reins in 1993, carried on by George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and now hopelessly continued as we speak by Donald Trump, both Republicans and Democrats have got it wrong. And that’s exactly where a common misconception lies. The Republicans are often perceived as the party that supports war and the military, and rhetoric in speeches and debates often supports that theory. But when it comes down to real action, the past two presidents from each party have increased the number of troops in war zones, and have all been lousy in looking after its veterans. That said, surveys have shown that in more recent times, younger veterans tend to lean Republican. That brings us to the worst U.S. conflict of the modern era, a war that is still going on after 18 years: the war in Afghanistan. The Unwinnable WarIt came as a shock to me that the war in Afghanistan was still going on. I thought it was done and dusted and that U.S. troops were there to maintain stability. But that’s not the case and the war in Afghanistan has slowly become a deadly quagmire. Since Bush invaded Afghanistan in 2001, and seemingly wiped out the Taliban within months, he went for another bite of the cake and invaded Iraq in 2003. By doing so, Bush transferred the majority of his military’s power and resources more than a 1,000 miles west to eliminate Saddam Hussein, and left open the possibility for the Taliban to return to Afghanistan after hiding out in safe havens across the border in Pakistan. After 18 years of war, thousands of lives lost and hundreds of billions of dollars spent, the U.S. is still trying to ‘win’ the war in Afghanistan. But the fact is the Taliban haven’t been vanquished and remain a threat to the U.S. and its allies, even more so after Trump cancelled secret peace talks with the group in September. The Taliban have warned that more U.S. lives would be lost as a result.Stephen M. Walt for Foreign PolicyRealism vs IdealismSo how did the U.S. get into this Middle Eastern mess via Bush, make no apparent progress under Obama and, well, have all of its credibility shattered under Trump? It remains in this quandary because it has consistently sided with idealism, instead of realism. As we discussed earlier, when Bush thought he’d steamrolled through the Taliban in Afghanistan, he went for the jackpot in Iraq to remove Hussein, but as his military jumped from one country thousands of miles away to another, the inevitable game of Whac-A-Mole began. Then Obama announced he’d withdraw troops from the region, reversed his decision, then went ahead with his plan until there were just less than 10,000 troops in the country at the end of his presidency. And then we have Mr. Trump, who has never experienced realism in his life, and opened the door to a bloody Turkish invasion of northern Syria and killing thousands of Kurdish allies in the process.Idealism trumped (pardon the pun) realism in all of these cases, and explains why the U.S. is still in a conflict with the Taliban, the rise and fall of ISIS, and potential rise again of the Islamist group. Stephen M. Walt for Foreign PolicyWhy Do Countries Go To War?As I wrote back in July after I interviewed author Sebastian Junger, there’s something in the brain that keeps humans engaging in war. I was always taught that wars were fought over for money or religion, which is true, but what I wasn’t told was that going to war has positive psychological effects. Wars bring people together, create a sense of unity, and can provoke human qualities that often lie dormant in ordinary life, such as courage and self-sacrifice. It seems that the emotion of war has gotten the better of U.S. foreign policy for the best part of the past two decades, preventing economically and politically stable nations to be built. Instead, a series of power vacuums were created that see no end in sight. Peace depends on creating societies rich with opportunities and democracy. The fact that so many nations fail to do this makes our future prospects of peace look very bleak.Steve Taylor for the GuardianLast week…#56 — Jamil Smith (Rolling Stone) on voter suppression and the life of congressman Elijah CummingsRelated podcasts…#51 — Jason Kander (Democratic Party) on PTSD and how the U.S. has neglected its veterans #44 — Sebastian Junger (Tribe, The Perfect Storm) on why countries go to warJob CornerEach week I’ll feature a selection of new journalism jobs. I read an interview by Dahr Jamail with today’s guest, cultural communication expert Milton Bennett, at Truthout.org. Titled Is There a Cult of Trump? It spells out the methods utilized – consciously or unconsciously - by Trump to turn his followers into a cult – impervious to outside or contrary influence and united in defense of their aims and their leader. It’s a story of tactics and behavior that transform the Trump phenomenon into something more dangerous than a simple political divide.
