Interview: Tim Norman and Kit Klarenberg: The Sturgess Inquiry and the "novichok" narrative

Independent journalists Kit Klarenberg and Tim Norman have conducted significant investigations into the alleged 2018 assassination attempt on Sergei Skripal, a former Russian intelligence officer turned British spy, and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, England. The episode also covers the related death of Dawn Sturgess in nearby Amesbury, which was recently the subject of a UK inquiry. Skripal, who betrayed Russia for MI6 in the 1990s, was settled in Salisbury after a spy swap in 2010. On March 4, 2018, he and Yulia were found unconscious on a bench, allegedly poisoned by the nerve agent "novichok," which the British government attributed to Russian operatives. The official narrative claims this poison was smeared on Skripal's door, though inconsistencies—such as the delayed onset of symptoms, the survival of the Skripals, and lack of definitive evidence linking the agent to Russia—raise doubts about the UK government's story.Months later, Englishwoman Dawn Sturgess died after reportedly spraying herself with "novichok" from a sealed perfume bottle found by her boyfriend, Charlie Rowley, prompting further accusations against Russia. However, the apparently sealed bottle and the inability of scientists to confirm the nerve agent's origin undermined the government's claims. The British narrative was shaky and possibly propped up by intelligence-linked entities like Bellingcat and the Institute for Statecraft's Integrity Initiative, which may have pushed disinformation. The recently concluded Sturgess Inquiry, designed to control the narrative, inadvertently exposed its weaknesses. To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com You can find Tim's work on the Propaganda in Focus website (https://propagandainfocus.com/author/h7_2q94aatnh5/) and UK Column (https://www.ukcolumn.org/writer/tim-norman), as well as on X.com @timtron2020Kit writes for The Grayzone website (https://thegrayzone.com/author/kit-klarenberg/), including on the Skripal/Sturgess case: https://thegrayzone.com/2025/01/13/british-inquiry-skripal-poisoning/. (00:00:00) USA, Russia e l'imperialismo mafioso(03:30:21) La conferenza di Monaco è l'inizio di una nuova era(10:34:20) Trump-Putin “alleati” contro l'Europa e le democrazie liberaliRegia: VudioBrani musicali: Rage Against The Machine - Wake Up ; One Day (Vandaag) - Bakermat

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded October 28th and 29th, 2023 Having watched the incremental disintegration of Western Civilizations, such as it was, over the last forty and something years, it still comes as a surprise to witness the depravity, viciousness, and yes, banality of the evil now run rampant. And this is without regarding the unspeakable Israel - enacting a literal genocide even now, every moment - but the revelation of the West's moral bankruptcy Israel's ultimate crime illustrates. Certainly the blame for the killing of Gaza is on the governments and institutions of America, Europe, the NATO nations - Canada, the rest of the Anglo-American Alliance, and their satraps around the World - but the blood of innocents stains our hands too; we the people who allowed this happen, and allow it continue. So, now what are you and I and we to do? Dimitri Lascaris is a Montreal-based activist, journalist, and lawyer. He served as Justice Critic in the Shadow Cabinet of the Green Party of Canada and likewise for the Green Party of Quebec. Dimitri's interviews for TRNN are at TheRealNews.com. Dimitri's articles appear at various sites online and at his website, DimitriLascaris.org, where I found his latest piece, 'If We Have Any Honour, We Will Defend the Palestinian People'. Dimitri Lascaris in the first half. And; is there method in this madness? Was the ruthless destruction of decency and the foundational principles of the West, and presumably Israel, the intention of the current onslaught in Gaza, (and increasingly underscored by the marauding bands of murderous "settlers" in the West Bank)? Or has it all just gotten away from the perennial felon, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, originally hoping perhaps just for a distraction from the determined - and massive - demonstrations against his government? Whither Israel then, and where does the disaster it has wrought for Palestine's people lead it now? John Helmer is a journalist and author who's spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. Principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears, Helmer has too been a professor of political science, sociology, and journalism, and served as advisor to governments at the highest levels. Among his many book titles are: ‘Skripal in Prison,' ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,' ‘The Jackals' Wedding: American Power, Arab Revolt', ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17', and his latest, ‘SOVCOMPLOT: How Pirates Tried to Capture the Treasure of the Russian Seas, and Were Caught Out'. John's latest article at Dances with Bears examines the question of what becomes of "the only democracy in the Middle East" now that its long-promised war is begun. John Helmer and 'THE GODS ARE GOING AGAINST THE CHOSEN PEOPLE — MAMMON AGAINST ISRAEL, MARS AGAINST THE PENTAGON' in the second half. But first, Dimitri Lascaris and the great unraveling beginning in the navel of the World. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, broad/webcasting since 1999. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded February 19th, 2023. On February 8th of this year, Dutch police presented new evidence to the District Court of The Hague regarding the July 17th, 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17. Upon entering their evidence, the Dutch government and an Australian investigator on the case admitted to having held American military satellite images from the court, the press, and defence lawyers throughout the two-year trial for the wrongful deaths of the two hundred and ninety-eight people who perished aboard that ill-fated flight. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded January 22, 2023 Approaching the first anniversary of Russia's "Special Operations" in the Donbass region of Ukraine prospects for Russia's proposed ceasefire are tremulous, and the chance of peace breaking out soon remote. The problem for those seeking an end to the killing is, as ever, finding willing partners on both sides of the conflict. For now, Ukraine's backers in the United States and the NATO countries seem content to allow the war continue, sapping Russia's political and economic resources while providing a lucrative market for their weapons-making industries. But, and it is an enormous one, elements within Germany's uber military echelons are pushing America to put an end to its project in Ukraine - before it's too late! John Helmer is a journalist, author, and principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded December 20th, 2022. "Fascism" has become, in the post-totalitarian west, a term traduced through overuse to the point of triteness. So much so, it begs questioning whether this trivialization is not done by some nefarious design than the more usual intellectual laziness of the purveyors of news and other so-called "information". But - and it is an enormous but - fascism did not die with Herr Hitler, its surviving spore has found purchase in the body politic of liberal democracies across the World; in some more readily than others. John Helmer, the self-titled "doyen" of the foreign press corps in Russia is principle of the web news site, Dances with Bears. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded October 1st and 2nd, 2022 And welcome too to what appears to be the end of the pretense of Canada, the sovereign state. If we're honest, like Peter Pan's Tinkerbell, that place existed ever only as an article of faith: It was because we believed it, it was so. But in its deeds these last years, it is increasingly difficult to maintain the fiction this place named Canada is anything more in fact than a placeholder for Greater America and its now nakedly evident Empire. Yves Engler is a prolific author, essayist, and political activist. Among his dozen books are ten detailing various myths of "Canada's" foreign policy past and present. His hundreds of articles on that and other matters of the moment appear across the internet and at his site, YvesEngler.com. Yves is too the host of the Canadian Foreign Policy Hour, a "weekly news roundup and interactive discussion about Canada's role abroad." It's a forum made possible by the new communications environment, one that allows the citizenry sidestep corporate and state news mediation. Yves Engler in the first half. And; things are changing so rapidly it's almost pointless to write now, two days before my second guest's interview, about the previously mentioned Empire's efforts to overthrow Russian leadership and usurp entirely the European economy. Just today, on September's last day, NATO is entertaining an expedited application to accept Ukraine into its fold; even as Russia announces the adoption of Western Ukrainian territories. These two actions, should NATO complete its part, automatically create a state of war between the NATO states and Russia - setting the stage for World War III. This all in the wake of the sabotage of Russia's Nord Stream I and II pipelines. John Helmer is a journalist, author, and principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded September 17th and 18th, 2022. This week past, the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency officially demanded Russia relinquish control of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, or (ZNPP), and "all nuclear facilities within Ukraine's internationally recognized borders" into the hands of "competent Ukraine authorities". The Russian-held nuclear plant has been repeatedly shelled and was too the target of a Kiev commando-raid. The IAEA's investigation on the status of the plant, and now this report, are precedent-setting for the agency, but not a departure from the recent trend toward politicizing international agencies to serve the interests of America and NATO. John Helmer is a journalist, author, and principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears. He's a past professor of political science, sociology, and journalism and has served as advisor to governments at the highest level. Helmer has spent decades living in and reporting from Russia, and among his many book titles are: ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17,' ‘Skripal in Prison,' ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,' and his latest, ‘The Jackals' Wedding: American Power, Arab Revolt'. John Helmer in the first half. And; even as the UN's IAEA and OPCW are co-opted against their mandates into the service of the war-state, so too countries big and small are strong-armed to bend their laws to suit the aims of the United States. Witness Great Britain's abandonment of the Magna Carta in the Assange case, or Canada's deplorable political arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou and two-plus year torturing of logic and jurisprudence required to keep her imprisoned. What chance then do smaller countries like Sweden, or Iceland, or Cabo Verde have when their leadership receives a call from Uncle Sam? In the latter's case, that phone rang when Venezuelan diplomat and businessman, Alex Saab's plane landed for refueling in the tiny African nation, en route to Iran. Today, Saab languishes in an American prison cell for the crime of challenging imperial power. Roger D. Harris' long civil rights activism career encompasses the teaching political science at a Historical Black College in Mississippi in the 1960's and community organizing in East Harlem, New York City. Today, Roger's a Wildlife Biologist and conducts eco-tours with the Oceanic Society, but he still has an oar or two in the activist waters; sitting on the board of the human rights organization, Task Force on the Americas, and serving on the executive committee of the US Peace Council, among others. His political essays feature online at CounterPunch, Dissident Voice, Mint Press News, Popular Resistance, and at the Task Force on the Americas site, where I found his recent article, 'Possible Prisoner Exchange in US Hybrid War Against Venezuela'. This episode considers the implications of the rise of state-sponsored fake news and disinformation for international images. Simon takes the line that the exaggerations of nation branding are on a continuum with all-out lies of malicious propaganda. He calls for better research on public responses to nations using distortion. Does it demonstrably damage reputations? Nick argues that state sponsorship of objective news can be an important component of Soft Power as the BBC is an asset for the UK. He considers the history of this and the ways in our own time by which states are learning to blunt the kind of disruptive media onslaught of the kind deployed by Russia in 2014. He cites the British response to the Skripal case of 2018 and the effective use of so-called 'pre-bunking' strategies in the run up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Simon worries that the loss of confidence in news undermines the whole notion of things being knowable and plays into Russian hands which prompts Nick to stress the importance not merely of single state sponsored sources of objective news like the BBC but of building free media broadly to create multiple sources of credible news at a community level. The conversation ends with agreement that education is the answer and the perhaps our age of disinformation is a necessary wakeup call for a better future.

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded July 21st and 24th, 2022 Nearly seventy-seven years following the atomic annihilation of two cities, politicians in America and its NATO vassal states today are debating the strategic merits of a nuclear war with Russia, (and presumable China to follow). Absent the debate, naturally, is the moral question of both war and its necessary means. August 6th marks the grim anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima by America - Nagasaki being unnecessarily destroyed three days later. In the years since, historians have proven neither attack was needed to bring Japan to the negotiating table; they had been attempting surrender for months before the bombs dropped. But as we learn, each time anew it seems, truth has little purchase for the warmongers. The tragic and senseless destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will again be commemorated by the Victoria chapter of the Women in Black, who will stand silent vigil August 6th at the inner harbour. All are welcome to attend. Terry Wolfwood is Director and co-founder of the Barnard-Boecker Centre Foundation, at BBCF.ca. She's a writer, poet, photographer, and long-time activist in pursuit of peace, social justice, and women's rights. Her articles have appeared at Briarpatch, Peace News, and Third World Resurgence among other places. In conjunction with her many activities in support of justice and peace, Terry has served too as local coordinator for the Women in Black for many years. Terry Wolfwood in the first half. And; mere hours after signing an agreement allowing the safe passage of goods from Ukraine, an acknowledged Russian missile attack against the port of Odessa threatens to scotch the deal. Russia denies allegations made by Ukraine and western media it targeted grain silos in the port, instead saying a dry dock, warship under repair, and warehouse of American munitions were struck and destroyed. Meanwhile, Kiev's president Zelenskyy spent part of his day today playing host to US congressional reps, eager to pad their war-making resumes in anticipation of the Fall election. Today, twenty and some years into George Bush's "generational war", Sun Tzu's wise maxim seems to have eluded the modern masters of war. The NATO Alliance has spent the 21st Century hopscotching from country to country dealing death and destruction as it goes with the abandon of a malicious child on an ant hill, wantonly thumbing flat people, nations, and the very concept of International Law until. In 2022, we find ourselves on the threshold of another global war, one leading through Russia to a final confrontation with China. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded May 7th and 8th, 2022. Though most Canadians don't know it they and their country are at war. And, it's not merely a war against "Putin's Russia" (started in response to the invasion of Ukraine). While it's true, Canada has been actively engaged in undermining Russia, it has not been doing so exclusively - at the same time it has in turn tried to undermine China, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Iran, Syria, and a host of other nations, (all conveniently catalogued for it by our friends and neighbours south). Only difference is, now the military aspect of Ottawa's international campaign of belligerence is glaringly apparent. Yves Engler is a Montréal-based activist, and author of 12 books, mostly on Canadian foreign policy, including his latest, ‘Stand on Guard For Whom? A People's History of the Canadian Military'. He's also a prolific essayist whose many articles appear at numerous sites online, including at his website, YvesEngler.com, where his recent articles have focused on Canada's growing involvement in the crisis in Ukraine, including 'Harper pushed conflict with Russia long before invasion.' Yves Engler in the first half. And; while investigations by Canada's Department of National Defense exonerate itself of allegedly training Nazi's to kill Russians in Ukraine, (and presumably elsewhere) none are disputing the fact Canada's government is not only training, but also supplying the successors of Kiev's coupsters with the materiel vital to accomplishing that. And they're not alone. But, what remains the burning question of the moment is, "Where's the voice of global peace in this: Where's the United Nations?" Last week, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres made his organization's position clear - sort of - by not only refusing to censure Ukraine's military for intentionally hiding its forces behind human shields in Mariupol, but possibly too, as my second guest reports, committing a war crime by taking part in a scheme to use those civilians as cover in an attempt to extricate combatants from the besieged Azovstal steel plant. In March 2018 Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia collapsed onto a public bench in the English town of Salisbury. They were weaving in and out of consciousness and behaving like junkies experiencing an opioid overdose. 24 hours later they were hospitalised and placed under deep sedation in critical condition. Skripal was a Russian double agent who had been recruited to work for MI6, the British Secret Intelligence Service. He had been poisoned with Novichok, a nerve agent developed by the Soviet Union for use in their chemical weapons program. More than a decade before Skripal's poisoning, Alexander Litvinenko, another Russian intelligence officer working for MI6 had been poisoned with a rare radioactive isotope called Polonium. Skripal and Litvinenko's stories are eerily similar and yet diverge on a single fact; while Skripal survived, Litvinenko did not. Zoals judokas zeggen: mooie ippon. Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enThe Russian Presidential Affairs Department's Scientific Research Computing Center (GRCC) develops systems to monitor and deanonymize social-media users, and it sells these systems to government and private clients alike. Using the company's services, insurance companies can root out dishonest employees, and security-guard companies can recruit new staff. Other GRCC programs allow the police to hunt down “extremists” online. In a special report published in late September, Meduza learned that these computing systems collect information on Russians not just from open sources, but also from leaked databases that are sold illegally on the black market.  To find out more about Russia's database black market and how this information is being used, “The Naked Pravda” spoke to Meduza special correspondent Liliya Yapparova and Christo Grozev and Aric Toler, two top researchers at the investigative journalism website Bellingcat. In this episode: (2:01) Liliya Yapparova explains how she first learned about GRCC and its controversial products. (5:46) Kevin and Liliya discuss the ethics of using illegal databases to hunt down criminals, and the tradeoffs tech consumers accept when embracing news services. (9:15) Christo Grozev reviews Bellingcat's history and how he came to the group. (11:39) Aric Toler describes “digital stalking” and talks about Bellingcat's mid-October report about one of the alleged Skripal poisoners attending the family wedding of a Russian military intelligence commander. (21:31) Aric explains why Bellingcat isn't like Wikileaks. (23:56) Christo talks about when Bellingcat thinks it's okay to use leaked databases. (30:29) Liliya and Christo argue that Russia's data-leak problem can't be fixed anytime soon. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Fridays.

Antony Rotunno joins us again for the second part of our wide-ranging conversation on the 2016 BBC documentary HyperNormalisation by Adam Curtis. Borrowing the word "hypernormalisation" from a book by ex-Soviet citizen Alexei Yurchak, in whose writing it described an officially-encouraged delusional state of mind in the gradually-collapsing Soviet Union, Adam Curtis creatively applies the term to the West since the last quarter of the 20th Century; a time in which, he argues, both politicians and citizens have "retreated" from hard problems in favour of "fake" versions of reality, while the banking and technological elites have continued to fill the vacuum with their technocratic systems of "stability" and "control". While we remain unpersuaded by elements of Curtis's overall narrative and gently critical of his somewhat pretentious style, we nevertheless find the documentary rich with fascinating subjects, and share our own perspectives in a relaxed and fairly unstructured way. Note: If you haven't listened to part one of this conversation, please do so first, otherwise you may find it difficult to follow. Two Russian 'GRU' agents have been exposed as the perpetrators in the attempted murder-by-chemical-weapon of Sergei and Yulia Skripal. Their own story doesn't add up, but their movements are also inconsistent with the claims against them, and they appeared on TV (like no real active intelligence agent ever does). Missing, as always, from the mainstream narrative of the 'Skripal Saga' is all-important context: Why Russia, why chemical weapons, why now, and why, in a world of 'full-spectrum'...

We are joined once again by the lawyer and university lecturer Adeyinka Makinde for an in-depth interview on the subject of his recent essay, "Britain and Russia: An Enduring But Fruitless Rivalry". The crisis between Britain and Russia over the alleged poisoning of Sergei Skripal is the latest episode in what has been in recent years a de facto "Cold War" between Russia and the West. However, friction between Russia and Britain is longstanding; indeed it has spanned the centuries—a recurring clash of civilisations fuelled by cultural differences, imperial ambition and ideological antagonism—and manifest today in the West's attempts to maintain its global dominance in the face of a surgent Eurasia with Russia at its centre. But with the ideological "Cold War" of the Soviet years a thing of the past, we must surely pause to ask: Why is Britain prolonging this fruitless "rivalry" with a distant Eurasian power? Whose interests does it serve? And is there, perhaps, a more constructive and, frankly, safer way forward? Adeyinka Makinde trained for the law as a barrister. He lectures in criminal law and public law at a university in London, and has an academic research interest in intelligence & security matters. He is a contributor to a number of websites for which he has written essays and commentaries on international relations, politics and military history. He has served as a programme consultant and provided expert commentary for BBC World Service Radio, China Radio International and the Voice of Russia.
