Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is set to host a stirring evening of music and culture on Sunday, 19 January 2025. Fans of Afrikaans music are in for a treat as two of the genre's most celebrated artists—Bok van Blerk and Elandré—take the stage for an unforgettable Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert. Bok van Blerk, renowned for his poignant storytelling and commanding stage presence, expressed his excitement about performing at the iconic venue. “Performing at Kirstenbosch for the first time is truly a momentous occasion. This garden is not just a venue—it’s a cultural landmark that carries so much meaning for artists and audiences alike. I’m eager to share my music in this breathtaking setting where nature and melody come together. This concert will be a memory to cherish, and I can’t wait to connect with the audience.” Joining him is the dynamic Elandré, whose fresh pop-infused sound has redefined contemporary Afrikaans music. Reflecting on the upcoming performance, Elandré shared, “To perform at Kirstenbosch is an incredible honour and a milestone in my musical journey. As an artist, there’s something extraordinary about standing in a place that feels so alive—with the mountains as your backdrop and an audience eager to connect. This show is about more than music; it’s about sharing stories, building connections, and celebrating our collective journey as South Africans. I can’t wait to bring my heart and soul to this concert.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I revisit the life and legacy of lyric baritone William Parker (05 August 1943 – 29 March 1993), to whom I devoted an episode exactly a year ago. To further explore his unmatched contribution to the art of song, I present a second episode which was originally published as a bonus episode at the same time, featuring Will in four contrasting song cycles by Charles Wakefield Cadman, Claude Debussy, Aaron Copland, and Francis Poulenc, recorded between 1975 and 1987, when he was in his absolute prime. He is accompanied by William Huckaby, Gérard van Blerk, and the late Rudolf Jansen. Also included are two haunting settings of Herman Melville's “Billy in the Darbies,” a segment added posthumously to his Billy Budd novella; in two settings by Robert Evett and Ernst Bacon. The episode is prefaced by a brief tribute to the pianist Norman Shetler, who died yesterday in Austria nine days after observing his 93rd birthday; as well as a brief introduction by Will Parker's nephew, Mark Doty. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Bonus episodes available exclusively to Patreon supporters are currently available and further bonus content including interviews and livestreams is planned for the upcoming season.

In the penultimate episode of this six-part podcast series about team science, Richard Holliman describes a project involving indigenous researchers in Guyana who wanted to limit insecticide spraying without jeopardising the South American country's efforts to tackle malaria. The early warning system they developed with Andrea Beradi, an environmental systems researcher and a colleague of Holliman's at the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK, involved satellite technology, drones and ground monitoring systems.Holliman, who studies engaged research, says members of the wider project team were all paid and listed as co-authors. “That was a really straightforward example of just recognizing contributions from some fabulous people,” he adds. But sometimes, he argues, payment and authorship on a peer-reviewed paper may not be what co-producers are seeking. Instead they may want to co-write a report that would better serve their community's needs in discussions with policymakers.Helen Manchester, who researches participatory sociodigital futures at the University of Bristol, UK, adds: “For me, there's a real politics to knowledge production. We really need to be considering all the time when we're doing our research, to think about our own position as researchers and our relationship to and with other people.”And finally, Lorraine van Blerk, whose project about homeless young people in African cities featured in a previous episode, lists key questions to ask when working with young people in a research setting. “How do we make sure that young people are involved in the research design, in the data collection, and the analysis and impact of data?” she asks.Team Science showcases the roles of research managers, administrators and technicians, and their often hidden contributions to the scientific enterprise, and is a collaboration between Nature Careers and Nature Index. The series is sponsored by Western Sydney University. This episode, and others in the series, concludes with a section looking at how it is helping to champion team science. Hosted on Acast. The UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF) collects research outputs from UK universities and is used by the the country's government to distribute around £2 billion in research funding. But its focus on publications to measure outputs has drawn criticism. The Hidden REF, set up in 2020, looks at alternative measures. Simon Hettrick, its chair and director of the Software Susaintability Institute at the University of Southampton, UK, explains what can be submitted, and why publications are excluded. Gemma Derrick, a former member of the Hidden REF advisory committee who studies research policy and culture at the University of Bristol, UK, talks about its “hidden roles” category, and why some entries moved judges to tears. Kevin Atkins, who has worked as a site engineer at the University of Plymouth's Marine Biological Association for 32 years, was highly commended in the category. He describes a typical day, and how his work contributes to the wider research enterprise.Another highly commended entry was Growing up on the Streets, an international co-produced research project led by the University of Dundee, which focuses on around 200 young people aged 14 to 20 across three African cities: Accra, Bukavu and Harare. Lorraine van Blerk, a human geography researcher at the university, explains how six young people in each city were recruited as researchers, and how their roles were recognised and celebrated.
GettyImages For many young people living on the streets, lockdown and the COVID-19 pandemic has made their situation worse. The city of Harare in Zimbabwe was no exception. Lockdown made it difficult for young people to find food and make money in the informal economy. Researchers set up a story map – a map with text, images and multimedia content – to hear their voices and understand their experiences. It’s part of a three-year project called Growing up on the Streets, which worked with young people living on the streets in three African cities (Accra, Bukavu and Harare) alongside NGO partner StreetInvest. With the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, life on the streets became a lot harder, as young people recount in the story map. Read more: Young people living on Harare’s streets provide glimpses into life under COVID-19 lockdown Today’s episode of Pasha has Janine Hunter and Lorraine van Blerk, both at the University of Dundee, discussing the project. The Transport Agency is defending a design it's rolling out on a billion dollars worth of roads, after its own reviewers found fault with the method. The review says the design, called Hi-lab, is difficult to build, few contractors have experience with it and it has no proven track record. However, the agency has already laid larges stretches of it on the Waikato Expressway. NZTA's chief pavement engineer Gerhard van Blerk developed Hi-lab since 2010 and defends its use.

Welcome to the show this week where we introduce you to Tina-Marie. Her music is low-key, it's funky, smooth, sexy and very cool. We're lucky enough to be able to share this with our listenership around the globe and we hope you enjoy her slick and enticing groove. But it's not all about Tina-Marie in the show, Tobin has a choral delight that is sure to blow off your socks. OK, we get it, you're turned off by the word choral right? Well don't be - this is modern, engaging vocal work by Shards. It's a world away from the dusty halls of any long since forgotten congregation and eschews children with bowl cuts in matching cassocks. It's eerily cold, spacious and at the same time joyous to listen to. From the cool grooves of Tina-Marie we move seamlessly to the dark, Americana, alt country sounds of Brown Bird. Sadly Brown Bird are no more as founder David Lamb passed away in 2014 from leukaemia. However, his wife Morgan Eve Swain carried on the legacy and formed her new band, The Huntress and Holder of Hands. Coincidentally, speaking of David Lamb's passing, we learnt at the time of recording of the death of Daniel Johnston. Daniel was a monolith in modern music, had a family connection with us and delighted more people on earth than he would ever know. We've played him on the show before and you can hear him here and on a Wax Time Special here. Tina-Marie - Capetown, Wintergreen - Manchester Wintergreen, a couple of more than decent Manchester lads bring us the notion of clockwork mice. Oscillators, sequencers and laptops feel in stark contrast to the summery vibes that Capetown has delivered today. However, Wintergreen have a timeless feel that will probably happen to Tina-Marie as well. Listen to Gravi-T in 15 years and we're certain that it will have lost none of it's appeal. In fact, on the contrary. Tina-Marie's track is likely to become a staple listen. We can only look forward to her next release with much relish. Did we mention New Music? No? OK, so Pip Blom are featured in Tobin's New Music Shot this week, although you could have had it here 3 weeks ago when it was über-fresh. Firmly off the leash, Tobin also sees fit to bring us another track from one of his favourite genres - electro swing! Summer Sickness Shards Bilgewater Brown Bird Freckles Pip Blom Gravi-T Tina-Marie Fel Del Av Garden Movits! Clockwork Mice Wintergreen Find Sound Shards What Capetown Sound has to say about Tina-Marie Our friends over at Capetown Sound introduced Tina-Marie to the show. She was a big hit here at Record Box HQ and easily made the cut for the show. We didn't have much information on Tina-Marie so Nicole at Capetown Sound sent us the following information. It's short but sweet, as sweet as Tina-Marie's voice. Born and bred in Cape Town, Tina-Marie has been singing and composing since a very young age. She has worked with Nic Hazell, Patric van Blerk and Paul Petersen. Tina has performed with Zolani from Freshlyground years ago, singing Paradise Road. Influenced greatly by Sade, Meschell n D'Degeo Cello, Café Del Mar, Soul Candi and other lounge artists. Finds herself working closely with Wendy Oldfield as producer and Paola de Vito as manager.
