Episode #49: Since the Supreme Court overturned the reproductive rights protected by the Roe V. Wade decision, the news has been filled with talk about laws restricting access to reproductive health services. This upheaval is not just about state legislatures, federal laws, or religious beliefs…it's about people and their tender experiences. This episode features a collection of nuanced and highly personal stories about reproductive decisions and how these choices impact mental health. How each person makes meaning of their experience varies greatly, but what's common to all of the stories is that carrying a pregnancy to term and giving birth is not a minor incident. It is a major event in one's life: physically, hormonally, financially and often emotionally. Some of what you'll hear may be difficult; these stories may challenge your beliefs or values, but we urge you to listen and challenge yourself to hold the complexity, the diversity, and the common humanity in each tale. Our feature story is by writer, teacher and poet Patrice Vecchione. Joining me to listen, reflect on, and respond to these important reproductive health stories is Alissa Perrucci, PhD, the Counseling & Administrative Manager at the Women's Options Center at San Francisco General Hospital who has worked in abortion counseling for nearly two decades. Broadcast 12/4/22 & 12/12/22 Special thanks to Jeanne Baldzikowski for audio production, Lisa Herendeen for advance research and Leslie Nielsen and Patrice Vecchione for “In Your Voice” Coordination. Lance Malone was 24 and loving his life in Atlanta when he was diagnosed with acute-on-chronic liver disease, which is associated with organ failure and high short-term mortality. His liver disease progressed quickly, within just a few months. In his lowest moments, the Doctors informed him he was possibly down to his last hours. Lance poured his heart out to God, "Why?" Miraculously, God answered Lance, making him a promise... that He kept. The miracle of the promise was just one piece of this story. While Lance experienced lots of bumps in his road to transplant and healing, there were pieces of his recovery that the nurses and doctors considered miraculous as well. Lance is presently residing in Cleveland. He is the Founder and Visionary for Become Better Ministries, and the Manager of HIV Services at Care Alliance Health Center. He is also a Motivational speaker and Prophetic teacher. "Have FAITH! Whether your situation is medical, or financial, you've got to trust God when you can't trace Him, and truly you will see that He WILL provide. Your circumstance is not too small for the Lord to intervene. He is still in the miracle making business, and yours is on the way!" -Lance Malone “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 More helpful links: Become Better Ministries https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Community/Become-Better-Ministries-2234998513207822/ To contact Lance Malone: becomebetterministries@gmail.com Lance's FB page during his journey: https://www.facebook.com/Life4Lance/

Audit vs. Quality Improvement Methodology. How to undertake quality improvement and integrate it into GUM and HIV services? Hanna Bos, from the Municipal Health Service of Deventer, The Netherlands, discusses with Anna Hartley, one of the authors of a article, which explores the premise that true quality improvement methodology is poorly understood and poorly used in the NHS. Dr. Hartley, from the Ambrose King Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust, London, UK, brings some examples to the discussion to illustrate why audits alone cannot bring about continual improvement. "How to integrate quality improvement into GUM and HIV services" is the title of the study that can be found here: http://sti.bmj.com/content/early/2016/08/22/sextrans-2016-052732.
