Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Join Avalon, founder of One Minute Calm, in Willemstad, Curaçao. Special Edition On Location Walk and Talk of Avalon's Mindfulness Tour. Part 7 of 12. The island has a lot of maritime history starting with the natives that lived here before the European travellers came to conquer this beautiful island north of Venezuela. The capital city of Willemstad was once a city surrounded by a fortress which has probably kept it alive in it's beauty we still see today. The main street is famous for it's colorful buildings and Queen Emma pedestrian pontoon bridge. The streets are still beautiful and have the old world European feeling as you walk through the street and alleys. This episode is dedicated to a former client and friend of mine, Frank van den Berg. The youngest of 3 brothers, his family moved to Curaçao. At 5 years old, ready for Kindergarten, his parents decided it was time to move back to the mainland in the Netherlands. As an adult, he moved to America, yet he still considers this picturesque island his "home". - - - Checkout Avalon's Walk and Talk Podcasts, One Minute Calm Videos or blogs to see if this is something for you. And then he attaches a picture from Spotify that says: "Min favorit podcast er Radiovagabond" and that he's streamed a whopping 5.482 minutes. Is you're having trouble doing the math, that's more than 91 hours. But this is not what blew my mind. It's what comes next in his email. God bedring. Hold mig opdateret.
BONJOU FROM THE CARIBBEAN This week I'm going to take you to three different islands in the Caribbean. We will visit an independent UN nation Saint Lucia, then head over to two autonomous islands that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. CRUISING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC In August 2021, I explored Saint Lucia through a 12-day cruise with Celebrity Cruiselines. I was still traveling through the pandemic and knew that this would impact the cruise. There are stark differences between how we traveled back then and now. For example, we all had to be fully vaccinated and present a negative COVID test. Instead of having a buffet lunch option during lunch, we had someone serving us lunch. However, we didn't have to wear a mask on the ship. There were also some excursion restrictions for some destinations that we visited, and I noticed that the itinerary had changed quite a bit. The original plan was that we would travel to six UN nations, and since I am one of those travelers that travel intending to visit every country in the world, this was one of the main attractions for me. I knew that this trip would see me mark my "visit 100 countries" goal. However, that didn't happen, and I was a bit disappointed. Nevertheless, I made peace that things will not always go according to plan during a global pandemic. If you listen to the podcast, you will notice that I have touched on this in previous episodes. And sometimes, plans change during travel, and we have to accept, find solutions and move on. When you're on a cruise like this, the cruise line offers a few different tours or excursions on the port days. And because my trip happened in August 2021, we had to book a trip with the cruise line for some of the stops. That was the only way they would let us off the ship. This is obviously to curb the spread of the virus and make sure that we only traveled with other fully vaccinated and tested people. And that was the case with Saint Lucia. DAY TRIPPING IN SAINT LUCIA I made my way through the checkpoints on the pier in Saint Lucia, and I managed to book a tram trip around the port city, the capital of Castries. The little yellow trolly train is run by a local company here in Saint Lucia, called Hibiscus Train. But then nature intervened. A rain cloud quickly came in and covered the melting hot sun almost instantly and we were almost left soaking wet on the pier (when we were sweating from the heat only moments before). Island life, hey. I grabbed a poncho and took shelter in a nearby building and waited for the downpour to subside. This kind of flash rain is a regular occurrence on these islands, as a quick cooling intermission to break up the heat. We travelled on a tram, well train, well, we weren't on tracks, so it was just a type of car dressed as a locomotive. It had a little roof thank goodness, so we had shelter from the rain. After a tour around the city with a few stops, like the cathedral The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, we ended up at the exotic Vigie Beach, just on the other side of their tiny airport. Saint Lucia was so beautiful and the people are so friendly. Here are some interesting things that I learned. 7 FUN FACTS ABOUT SAINT LUCIA It is a small capital built on reclaimed land. Castries is the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, the island country in the Caribbean. It's a small city in a small country, and the urban area has a population of only around 20,000 inhabitants. It is built on reclaimed land and has undergone several restorations after fire destruction. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. Saint Lucia is tiny, with 616 km 2 (238 sq miles). It is number 178 on the list of 193 (UN Nations) countries. It is smaller than Micronesia and Singapore and only slightly bigger than Andorra. (lidt større end Bornholm). The population of the country is only 184,000. It is the first country to be named after a woman. It's the first country to be named after a woman – Saint Lucy of Syracuse. It's one of just two countries in the world to be named after a woman. The other one is Ireland. Saint Lucia gained its independence in 1979 It gained its independence from Britain in 1979 after ownership of the island was swapped seven times between France & Britain in the 1800s. After 1979 it became a member of the Commonwealth. You can still feel a bit of Britain here. For example, they love playing cricket, driving on the left-hand side of the road, and English is still the official language even though 85% of the population also speak Saint Lucian Creole. It's hard to take a picture without their famous UNESCO landmark. Saint Lucia is home to the Pitons mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the island is small, it's hard to take a picture anywhere in Saint Lucia without the two mountain peaks visible. There are 21 different types of rum in just one region. Like many destinations in the Caribbean, rum is big business in Saint Lucia. And the Roseau region just south of the capital is home to 21 different types of rum. Over 70% of the island is covered in rainforest Saint Lucia has it all, from stunning beaches to mountain peaks, and then most of the country is covered in rainforests. MEETING A FELLOW TRAVELLER ABOARD THE CELEBRITY CRUISE Most cruise lines in the world often have a team of people planning these excursions. On the Celebrity Cruise, I met Austria-born Jennifer Weiner, the Destinations Manager for the cruise. During our time at sea, Jennifer presented and shared relevant information with us on the big theatre on the ship. When she told us that she's been to almost 100 countries, partly because of her job, this sparked my mind, given my journey, and I thought I would ask her more about her story. She mentioned that she caught the travel bug at a very young age: “When I was little, I was envious of kids who were sent far off to boarding school. I saw it as an adventure, so I begged my mother to send me off, but she wanted me close. I think this was an early indication of my desire to explore. But then at age 17, I studied in Rome for a few months, which kickstarted my wanderlust.” She even went to study business after that, but her heart was always in travel. “After attending business school in Austria, I studied at a travel institute and became a travel agent. I started travelling a bit but soon realised the benefits of the job didn't allow me to travel as much as I wanted. A friend told me about cruise ships and then I started cruising as a travel agent. During one cruise, I thought to myself that the teams working on the ships looked like they had a lot of fun, so I applied, and the rest is history.” So, through hard work and serendipitous moments, she found herself working as a Senior Destinations Manager in Celebrity Cruiselines. It's fascinating to hear her story. She also mentioned that taking a cruise is one of the best ways to get to know a destination. You also get to meet with many people and learn about different places in a relaxed setting. Going on a Caribbean cruise like this and visiting many exotic destinations is exciting for us guests. Imagine having that as your job, as Jennifer has. “It's a lot of work, especially now that I am a manager. I don't get to get out as much as I used to but I try to give my team as much opportunity to get out as possible. About 40% of my time is dedicated to travel to my favourite continents, like Africa.” OUT OF AFRICA It's funny that Jennifer mentions Africa. This episode was recorded five months ago, and I'm editing it in my Airbnb apartment in Nairobi, Kenya this week. And in just 2 days I'm going to make it to my 100th country when I travel to Uganda on Friday morning. I was telling Jennifer about my future (now current) plans to visit Kenya and Uganda for my 100th country visited milestone, and she recounts some funny stories of her time in Kenya and Uganda. “Kenya is one of my most favourite places to visit. There's just something about it that holds a special place in my heart. Maybe because it was my first African country, but I just fell in love with it immediately. I love sleeping in a tent hearing the wildlife so close. In Uganda, I had a few close calls with gorillas in Uganda but overall, I love it.” She tells me more great stories about her visit to Uganda, particularly about the time she stroked a wild cheetah. Jennifer been cruising for 9 years now – and has visited 98 countries so far, and it was interesting to hear her stories. ARUBA, OH I WANT TO TAKE YA After exploring Saint Lucia by tram trolly, we got back on the ship and spent the night cruising to another island in the Caribbean. In the morning, we arrived at the Netherlands Antilles in the south westernmost part of the Caribbean Sea. More specifically, to the first of the ABC Islands – and this is the island you probably most know from the beginning of this song. Yes, Aruba, also known as ‘One Happy Island'. The other two ABC islands are Bonaire and Curaçao. Unfortunately, Bonaire wasn't a stop on this cruise itinerary – so only from A to C. Mario Arends, Cruise Manager at Aruba Tourism Authority, was kind enough to take us around his home island. “Aruba is part of the Dutch Caribbean Islands, which originally included the 6 islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Sint Maarten) knows as the Dutch Antilles. In 1986, Aruba separated from the Antilles and became an autonomous nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2010, Curaçao and Sint Maarten did the same.” Mario tells me about the democratic government of Aruba and how it remains autonomous within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. And how the pandemic has hit the tourism industry in Aruba which accounts for about 80% of the island's GDP. Aruba is a relatively small island, and there is so much more to do except visit the beautiful beach. You can do nature hikes, visit the nature park and do some cultural activities. Here are some TripAdvisor picks. SWINGING CURAÇAO The next day, we arrived at the 2nd of the three islands, Curaçao. It still uses the Dutch Guilder (the currency used in the Netherlands before the conversion to the Euro). I found my way to the oldest still operating pontoon bridge in the world, built in 1888. It spans 167 m (548 feet) from Punda to Otrabanda across the harbor of Willemstad on the island of Curaçao. Notable because this permanent bridge is hinged and opens regularly to enable the passage of oceangoing vessels. It swings open several times a day when boats need to go through. It is surrounded by beautifully coloured houses on each side that reminds me of a town in Copenhagen. It's called Queen Emma Bridge, but the locals call it the Swinging Old Lady. We walked across the old lady to the other side to a pink building called the Blue Experience which I was told sold the famous liquor. Unfortunately, it was closed due to the pandemic so instead, I walked around the area and found a group of guys on the pier laughing and telling jokes in a language I didn't understand. They were speaking Papiamento and one of the guys even taught me how to say thank you - macha dankie. MEET A TRAVELLING WELSHMAN IN NEXT EPISODE I do have a little bit more from the cruise in the next episode when I have an interesting conversation with another avid world traveller who's been to 96 countries. He's also a part of the Celebrity Cruise team and he's almost always on stage holding a microphone. Here's how I introduce him in the next episode: He's a public speaker, stand-up comedian, quiz master, magician, mind reader, DJ, genius dancer and arguably one of the most entertaining things to come out of Wales since Tom Jones. His name is Eddie Jenkins but on the cruise ship we all know him as "Cruise Director Eddie". You really don't wanna miss that conversation. Coming in a few days in your podcast feed. My name is Palle Bo, and I gotta keep moving. See you. A TOUCHING LETTER FROM A LISTENER I always love getting reviews, comments and emails from listeners and followers. And this week, I would like to share this particular one. I got a very touching letter from Kenneth. Hi Palle Bo. It's a great podcast you're producing, and I just got this from Spotify. He then attached a picture from Spotify that said: “My favorite podcast of the year is The Radio Vagabond” and that he's streamed a whopping 5.482 minutes. That's more than 91 hours! But this is not what blew my mind. It's what comes next in his email. You have been a big part of my personal journey. Unfortunately, it's a journey I'm still on. In May I was hit by stress-related anxiety. The serious kind. To get through this hard time I started listening to your podcast. I've had it in my ears on my long daily walks and it has helped me control my thoughts and in this process, I'm still in – because listening to your exciting podcast, I've been able to focus on something else. In other words, your journey has been a big part of my inner journey and will continue to be that in 2022. It's been a tough battle for me and I hope I'm back to 100% soon. I want you to know that you are one of the people that has helped me to where I am today with your podcast. And for that, I thank you so much. Merry Christmas and happy new year. Keep up the good work. Kenneth I can't even begin to express your email's impact on me, Kenneth. When I started this podcast in 2016, my goal was to give you tips, tricks, and ideas for your next trip. It was to let you follow my journey and maybe inspire you with my somewhat different life choice. Also, I was hoping to entertain you along the way. But if someone had told me that this podcast would be playing even just a tiny part in the recovery of stress-related anxiety, I would have said, "yeah, right." And your email came at a point where I was thinking, "I'm spending 3-4 full days just editing one 30-minute episode. What's the point? Is it worth the many hours of work I put into this"? But after reading your email, I got the motivation back, and for that, I thank you. Also, thank you for sharing, Kenneth. Get better soon. Keep me posted. MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia will become the first LNG-powered vessels to join the MSC Cruises fleet next year representing an investment of €3 billion in Liquified Natutal Gas (LNG) ships with the construction on World Europa II due to commence in early 2023.These ships play an important role in the Company's commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. LNG is by far the cleanest marine fuel currently available at scale and it virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions like sulphur oxides (99%), nitrogen oxides (85%) and particles (98%). In terms of emissions with a global impact, LNG plays a key role in climate change mitigation and the engines of these two ships have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to standard fuels. In addition, with the subsequent availability of Bio and Synthetic forms of LNG, this energy source will provide a pathway toward eventual decarbonized operations. It was also revealed that MSC Cruises and the Chantiers de l'Atlantique confirmed the installation of a fuel cell pilot plant on board MSC World Europa known as Blue Horizon. The technology will use LNG to convert fuel into electricity at one of the highest efficiencies of any power solution available today, producing electricity and heat on board. The fuel cell technology selected by Chantiers de l'Atlantique (CdA) and MSC Cruises is the SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) developed by Bloom Energy. The SOFC will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by about a further 30 percent compared with a conventional LNG engine without producing emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides or fine particles. It also offers the advantage of being compatible with LNG, as well as several low carbon fuels such as types of methanol, ammonia and hydrogen. This project will form the building block for future larger installations and the beginning of an even closer collaboration between MSC Cruises and Chantier de L'Atlantique on R&D of fuel cell technology. The traditional coin ceremony tradition took place as the keel was laid for MSC Cruises' second LNG-powered ship, MSC Euribia, which will be one of the most environmentally high performing contemporary vessels built in France. Anne Claire Juventin Responsible for Quality Control from the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, and Valentina Mancini, Brand Manager from MSC Cruises performed the traditional maritime ritual as godmothers representing the ship owner and the shipbuilder when they placed two coins under the keel as the historical sign of blessing and good fortune for the project, and the ship's operational life at sea.The float out of MSC World Europa, which will be the first LNG-powered vessel to join the MSC Cruises fleet took place at the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire where she will now be moved to a wet dock for work to continue on the ship until her delivery in November 2022.NCL Homeports in Panama City Norwegian Cruise Line, will become the first cruise line to homeport in Panama City, Panama, offering roundtrip Panama Canal voyages beginning 20 March 2022 with Norwegian Jewel.NCLK (Parent company of NCL) signed a multi-year agreement with the Panama Tourism Authority which allows the Company to seasonally homeport at the Colon Cruise Terminal as well as at Fuerte Amador Cruise Terminal located on the Pacific Ocean side of the country and adjacent to Panama City.In 2022 and 2023 the Company will offer 12 homeport voyages starting with Norwegian Jewel on 20 March 2022 where she will sail a nine-day itinerary traversing the Panama Canal and visiting incredible destinations including Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; Kralendijk, Bonaire and Cartagena, Colombia before arriving to the Caribbean side of Panama in the city of Colon.Starting 14 January 2023, Norwegian Gem will also feature select Panama Canal voyages including an 11-day journey visiting seven ports of call, including Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands before ending in New York City. It was such a fun experience and since then I've seen it a number of times on various ships and each ship does it in a similar manner.I have noticed that crew members taking part seem to get special attentionWhat I'd like to know is;What is the tradition behind this nautical mayhem? Also if a ship is doing a world cruise does the crossing the line ceremony happen every time she passes the equator?Part of this question was answered in detail in Episode 68 – https://bit.ly/2UD2afjGill from SA asks Chris – what is the algorithm you talk about?Vilma from UK asks Baz – What makes TeeMill (your chosen supplier of podcast merchandise) so good.TeeMill: https://the-big-cruise-podcast.teemill.com/the-journey/ Example of “Buy a Tee, Plant a Tree” promotion:A holistic approach to reforestationThis weekend, we count your orders and fund the planting of trees in your brand's name. Our international tree planting partners work to address reforestation through a mixture of approaches. As well as directly seeding land with native seed species, they also employ methods like creating ‘seed bombs' which contain seeds mixed with clay, compost and soil, ready to plant when the rainy season arrives. After the trees are planted, protecting them is vital. Patrols and guard towers watch for fires and keep the forests from getting cut down illegally or destroyed by natural disasters.34 football pitches of forest plantedTogether, so far, across our tree planting weekends, we've planted enough trees to sequester over 1.7 million kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere. Trees are the ultimate carbon storage system without requiring any expensive tech, helping to fight climate change. What's more, they also help to cool our air by releasing water through their leaves which then turns into water vapour. The larger the tree, the more carbon it can hold which is why our tree planting partners work hard to protect forests as well as plant them. You can find your own tree planting stats in Analytics and set a Green Friday target for customers to get behind. Posting live updates across the weekend is a great way to keep your community engaged as you move towards your reforestation goal.Guest Lecturer - Tamara Tamara is an 8th generation Australian. That's where Expat Health Code comes in. Especially if you have been working with or using Functional or Naturopathic medicine, it can be hard to find these options outside of the US or Europe. CRUISE NEWSCLIA – Ready, Set, Sail CampaignSupport the return of local cruising in Australia. CLIA is calling on the Australian government to finalise a phased and carefully controlled resumption of domestic cruising.Click now! TAKE ACTION https://bit.ly/3eQoXMaSea trial completed for hospital ship Global Mercy – Mercy Ships Stena RoRo is leading the project for the construction of the Global Mercy™, the world's largest civilian hospital ship. After several years of construction at the Tianjin Xingang shipyard in northern China, the final test, the official sea trial, has now been completed with good results. The shipyard will present the ship for delivery this summer and the vessel will then sail to Antwerp in Belgium on its maiden voyage, where some members of the crew will board and the medical equipment supplemented. This will be followed by a visit to Rotterdam, and after this the Global Mercy™ will be ready for its first important mission in West Africa.Stena RoRo is building the Global Mercy on behalf of the international charity organization Mercy Ships, which provides free life-changing healthcare to people in some of the world's poorest countries. The project began in 2013 and Stena RoRo is responsible for design, contracting and execution. The construction project is unique in its kind and places major and specific demands on both design and layout, dependent on the special needs that hospital operations entail. On board are operating theatres and hospital wards, and everything needed for both patients and those working on board, including schools and preschools for the children of the volunteers. Sea trialThe sea trial, which the Global Mercy has just completed, means that the ship's systems and functions – such as engine performance and fuel consumption, navigation and radio equipment, maneuverability and safety systems – are tested for several days at sea.The Global Mercy will have six operating theatres, 200 hospital beds, a laboratory, a patient clinic and an eye and dental clinic. In total, she will be able to accommodate 950 people, of which 641 are crew. This summer the Global Mercy will be delivered from the shipyard. The maiden voyage will be to Antwerp in Belgium where some members of the crew will board and the last medical equipment installed, which will take a few months. After that, there will be two weeks in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where festivities will be held in presenting the ship to sponsors, potential volunteers and other interested parties.Big difference for many peopleThe first mission will be during 2022, when the Global Mercy is expected to call at Dakar in Senegal. There will then be more than six hundred volunteers aboard from all over the world and from a variety of professional categories, who will make it all possible through their contributions of skills and time.More than 93 percent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to safe surgical care *. The already very fragile medical care systems are at risk of being further degraded by the corona pandemic, and the need for basic but vital care is greater than ever in many poor countries. The Global Mercy will make a big difference for many people in southern and western Africa.Mercy Ships: https://bit.ly/33JfiAmCarnival Cruise Line Provides Update on Possible Restart Plan from Select U.S. HomeportCarnival Cruise Line today notified its guests and travel advisor partners of cancellations for additional sailings as it works toward plans for a possible July restart in the U.S. on select ships.Carnival hopes to begin operating sailings on three ships from Florida and Texas, including Carnival Vista and Carnival Breeze from Galveston, and Carnival Horizon from Miami. With an output of up to 20 megavolt amperes (MVA), two cruise ships can be supplied with electricity at the same time in Warnemünde at berths P7 and P8. In regular passenger operation AIDAsol needs up to 4.5 megawatts per hour (MWh) of electricity. The use of shore power to supply ships with energy is a decisive step for AIDA Cruises to reduce local emissions to zero during berthing over time, as a cruise ship typically stays in port around 40% of its operating time.Holland America Line's New Rotterdam Successfully Sails Through Sea Trials in ItalyIt was smooth seas and fair winds for Holland America Line's newest ship, Rotterdam, which returned in the evening of May 6 to Fincantieri's Marghera (Venice) shipyard in Italy, after successfully completing two sets of sea trials off the country's Adriatic coast.Rotterdam left Marghera April 25 and performed the preliminary sea trials over two days before going into dry dock at Fincantieri's Trieste shipyard where standard pre-delivery hull maintenance and painting were performed. If you stay closer to the city you have a couple of options - either Sunscape Resort or Lions Dive Beach Resort. Both have onsite dive operators - Ocean Encounters. An option for the west side is All West Apartments and dive with Go West Diving (formerly Ocean Encounters West). There is a signature wreck - the MV Superior Producer just outside of Willemstad. On the west side be sure to dive Mushroom Forest. If you go in October you can expect bottom temperatures around 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

Presentatie: Folkert Tempelman. VISIT PETER AT THE LAS VEGAS MONEY SHOW May 13 - 15, 2019 https://conferences.moneyshow.com/moneyshow-las-vegas/speakers/4532d84bf93311d3a5dd00104b96e7b5/peter-schiff/ Recording Today's Podcast from Willemstad, Curaçao I am recording today's podcast from my cabin on a cruise ship, which is right now docked on the Dutch island of Curaçao, which is about 35 miles north of Venezuela. I've never actually been to this island, even though I live in the Caribbean now, in Puerto Rico, there are still many places in the Caribbean that I have not visited. I really wish I'd come here sooner. I had no idea how beautiful this island was. Not really the beaches, so much, although I'm sure they are equally spectacular. I didn't go to the beach. I just spent the day walking around town. But it's probably the most charming Caribbean island I've been to, as far as the architecture and the way the town is laid out - how beautiful the streets are, and the buildings and how clean they are. It really seems like a nice place to live. I think there is a permanent population of about 160,000 people. The Fed's Decision I want to spend my limited time on today's podcast talking about the Federal Reserve's decision today and the press conference. I did get back on the boat in time to watch the press conference live, and I do want to limit today's podcast to that discussion. Before the Fed announced its decision on interest rates - nobody expected a rate hike, and we did not get a rate hike, but before the Fed announced today's decision, the markets were on the defensive. Earlier in the day, Donald Trump had mentioned that he now thinks that the tariffs on Chinese imports, or on Americans who want to buy Chinese imports, may remain in effect for a much longer period of time; indicating that maybe this great trade deal is not as close as the President was letting on in the past. Unexpected Dovishness So the markets sold off. I think the Dow, maybe at the lows was down about 170-some odd points, not exactly sure, but then, when the Fed announced its decision not to hike, the market erased all of those losses, and I think at one point we were up close to triple digits. Nobody was expecting a hike; I think they were expecting the Fed to be dovish, but I don't think they were expecting the Fed to be this dovish.
