CTO Series: Jussi Mononen on the Human Side of Software Development and Technical Leadership In this CTO Series episode, we explore the intersection of technology and people with Jussi Mononen, CTO of CarbonLink. Drawing from his extensive experience as an Agile practitioner and technical leader, Jussi shares valuable insights on effective software development, technical strategy alignment, and the critical human elements that drive successful technology implementations. The Transformative Power of Agile "It's all about people." Jussi's journey as a technology leader was fundamentally shaped when he discovered Agile methodologies. Coming from a background of waterfall-like approaches to software development, the introduction of Agile principles opened up a broader perspective that transformed his view of the profession. What began as technical work creating billing software evolved into a deeper understanding of the collaboration challenges in problem-solving. This shift helped Jussi develop a more humanistic and holistic approach to software development, recognizing that the human dynamics are often more complex than the technical challenges themselves. Every line of code eventually becomes a liability, as software is maintained over decades Software is only truly "done" when you remove the plug and it no longer exists Direct communication with customers is essential for understanding the real problems that need solving Balancing Technical Strategy with Business Needs "Be careful what you choose in terms of technology as you need to maintain it forever—hopefully." Creating a technical strategy that aligns with business objectives while remaining adaptable requires careful consideration of both immediate and long-term factors. Jussi emphasizes the importance of considering maintainability over a decade-long horizon while organizing technology stacks that don't limit organizational agility. When selecting technologies, consider whether you can find people already familiar with your tech stack Evaluate whether your technology choices allow you to fulfill the responsibilities your customers pay you to handle Be prepared to abandon technologies that aren't working, despite the sunk cost Structure your technical organization to maximize speed and adaptability Fostering Collaboration Between Tech and Business "It's not about 'who wins,' it's about making good decisions." Effective collaboration between technical and business units is built on foundations of respect and trust. As a self-described optimist about humanity, Jussi approaches cross-functional work by giving respect to colleagues and trusting them to make sound decisions within their domains of expertise. Listen carefully to people and make a genuine effort to understand their perspectives Focus on making well-considered decisions rather than striving for theoretical "best" decisions Remember that people develop software, not processes or tools—maximize each team member's potential Create environments where differing viewpoints are valued as inputs to better decision-making Strategic Roadmapping and Adaptability "We constantly seek information about what might be changing." Maintaining a clear vision of the future while remaining adaptable is a critical balancing act for technology leaders. Jussi's approach involves maintaining a rolling two-quarter roadmap that provides directional clarity while incorporating new information and signals from various sources. Review and revise roadmaps weekly to incorporate new information Use tools like Trello to maintain lists of priorities and possibilities Actively seek diverse signals about changing requirements and technologies Use the roadmap to communicate investment priorities to stakeholders like the board Overcoming Complex Technical Challenges "Someone needs to give enough love to the items in the backlog." The most significant challenge in Jussi's career came during a 4.5-year project reimplementing critical university systems that had been in use for over 20 years. This complex undertaking highlighted the importance of people skills alongside technical capabilities when managing diverse stakeholders with conflicting needs. Be prepared to handle conflicting needs and requirements from different stakeholders Establish a shared direction before attempting to solve detailed technical challenges Recognize that many critical challenges in large projects are about people, not technology Give proper attention to backlog items to ensure they receive the consideration they deserve Leadership Philosophy and Learning "Choose the context more accurately. Involve yourself with people you look up to." Rather than pointing to a single book that influenced his approach to technical leadership, Jussi emphasizes the importance of context and learning from those around you. His leadership philosophy centers on carefully selecting environments with admirable people and absorbing knowledge through direct experience and observation. Understand the specific context you're operating in before applying generic principles Surround yourself with people whose approach and values you respect Learn continuously from the practical experiences of peers and colleagues About Jussi Mononen Jussi is a problem solver, programmer and business-to-technology translator. People side of software systems development, as he often says: "it's all about people".He has both tech and people street cred, being a long time Agile practitioner, and now the CTO of a promising scale-up in Helsinki: CarbonLink. Recently a Business Leader asked me how's it different to lead a Scaling up business vis-a-vis a normal growing business? It's like driving in a highway vis-a-vis driving within the city.A moment of distraction can cause havoc in the highway for self and for others, whereas in the city one may manage to get away with a few dents and bruises. Scale-up requires increasedlevels of focus, attention, and ability to manage distractions. A drive in the highway requires higher levels of preparation, at multiple levels – the vehicle readiness, robust mechanical condition, well-lubricated joints, proper fluid levels, ability torefuel. Scale-up requires adequate and thorough preparation at multiple levels. Whereas for a drive in the city, one may manage with lesser levels of such preparations. A drive in the highway requires higher levels of planning, strategising in terms of route, food, stay, fuel, financesand such other requirements of self and fellow travellers. Scale-up requires higher levels of planning and strategising so that the odds for success is maximised. For a drive in the city one can get away with lesser levels of such planning. If one gets stuck in the highway for whatever reason, help and rescue may be far and few; may take time. Scale-up requires safeguards and efforts to avoid getting stuck. In a city it's easierto find help. A drive in the highway moves one in to a whole new place – fellow travellers too. Scale-up takes the business and the people in to a whole new level – to a different orbit altogether. In a drive in the city, one doesn't leave the city. A drive in the highway results in higher fuel-burn per hour as you cover a lot more distance; consumes more fueltherefore. Scale-up consumes more energy, capital and resources. A drive in the highway takes one through unfamiliar terrains, areas, new vistas, places, even different weather conditions.Scale-up takes one through different, unfamiliar territories, experiences, and changing conditions. Highways are relatively less crowded. Scale-up businesses are fewer in number. Whereas City roads are crowded. A drive in the highway often takes one out of their comfort zones, makes one adapt, adjust / re-adjust their needs, affairs, and responses. Scale-up moves people out of their comfort zones, makes them adapt and embrace the new. Preparing and Leading a Scaling up Business – It's different! Vastly different! My name is PK NarayananWishing you the best, Thank you.

“Procurement is going to make a transformative leap. It may be in a year. It may be in three years. But it's going to happen. So start experimenting.” – Remko Van Hoek, Full Professor of Practice SCM, Executive Director CSCMP Supply Chain Hall of Fame, hosted by Walton, University of Arkansas - Sam M. Walton College of Business It's time to make procurement fun again. That's what Remko Van Hoek, Full Professor of Practice SCM, Executive Director CSCMP Supply Chain Hall of Fame, hosted by Walton, University of Arkansas - Sam M. Walton College of Business, told Philip Ideson when they sat down together at DPW Amsterdam 2024. In this episode, Remko shares insights from the 10X Procurement survey he led in conjunction with DPW, and what it reveals about how AI and digital transformation are injecting opportunity, value, and, yes, even fun back into procurement. The survey also uncovered a troubling ‘inspiration to action' gap between procurement's AI readiness and their ability to successfully execute at the pace required by the rest of the business. Along with discussing digital transformation pressures, Philip and Remko also explore: What 10X growth actually looks like in practice and how procurement can take the idea of exponential growth and turn that into tangible, bottom-line results for the business What it means to be “digitally literate” and why focusing only on technology is actually not the right approach to digital transformation The fundamentals procurement needs to have in place to 10X their growth and impact in 2025 Links: Remko Van Hoek on LinkedIn Listen to “Integrating Blockchain into Procurement” with Remko Van Hoek Subscribe to This Week in Procurement Subscribe to Art of Procurement on YouTube

Personal values, dropping comparisons, and building confidence. Aligning with our values is not just about finding personal joy but also about creating a meaningful and fulfilling life and business. The Happy Mom Mindset This book provides valuable guidance for moms and anyone looking to build confidence and ward off the perils of comparison. "Comparing yourself to others or to an impossible standard is never useful. We usually compare ourselves and try to do it all because we fear that we don't measure up but end up falling short of an impossible standard." The Power of Values in Life and Business It is so important to understand your values and align your life and business with those personal values. Recognizing our values is crucial for personal fulfillment and success. Values are not about what's universally good or bad but about what uniquely lights each person up. Dropping the judgment in what you think you should value more or less is the first step in embracing personal values. Checking in on your values Make a List: Write an extensive list of things that matter to you in different areas of your life—personal, professional, financial, health, relationships, and spiritual. Prioritize: Narrow down this list to the top five values that resonate most with you. These are the values that align deeply with your core. Reflect: Regularly check in with yourself to ensure your daily actions and decisions align with these core values. Battling Comparison with Confidence Comparison is a natural human tendency but a destructive tendency that often leads to feelings of inadequacy or failure. We can step away from this comparison trap when we know and honor our values. Understanding what truly matters to us allows us to operate from a place of inner confidence. When we are grounded in our values, we are less likely to judge our accomplishments against someone else's achievements. This shift in mindset reduces the "compare and despair" syndrome and opens up space to appreciate others for who they are without feeling threatened or diminished. More on comparison A New Perspective on Success Embracing your values allows you to reshape your perspective on success. Instead of working towards goals based on societal standards or external validation, individuals can set and pursue deeply meaningful goals. On episode 27 of the Go Sokal Podcast, hosts Katy Welch and Chris Mulally sit down with Technology Coordinator Malcolm Stewart to talk about the role of information technology in modern society, including preventing data breaches, setting up secure passwords, and how employees can avoid scams like spoofing, phishing, and other cyber attacks.
The software-defined WAN (wide area network) is a piece of networking technology that simply makes life easier (and safer) for any organization with a distributed network.Instead of struggling to join MPLS, ADSL, and other interconnects together and then blanket the whole thing in encryption, SD-WAN handles all the details. Primary among SD-WAN suppliers is Nuage Networks, the SD-WAN specialist division of Nokia. Our guests in this episode of the Tech Means Business are Saurabh Sandhir, the Vice President and General Manager of Nuage Networks, and Arun Pathak, Vice President of Managed Network and Collaboration Services for NTT. Arun speaks as the enterprise-scale expert in India of SD-WAN technology and software, one that partners with Nuage as its de facto supplier. We talk about the effects of the cloud on networks, the advantages of SD-WAN, and how this layer of software abstraction increases cybersecurity at the network level.Learn more about Nuage Networks here:https://www.nuagenetworks.net/NTT Global is here:https://services.global.ntt/Saurabh Sandhir is on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ssandhir/NTT's Arun Pathak is here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/arun-pathak-4a730a14/The host of Tech Means Business can be found here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/josephedwardgreen/

In this episode, we get to chat with Arabelle Yee, a transformational entrepreneur and certified psychotherapist. She talks about shifting from the corporate world into psychotherapy, manifesting money and goals despite the challenges, putting her intention into healing, and her inner and identity work. [2:07] Getting Started “My soul had been knocking from within way before that, just saying ‘Arabelle, it's time for you to move on to something else', but if you've been in the corporate for 10 years, you don't really know what else you can do.” [8:58] Career and Business “I help people to really find their voice, remember who they are, and offer them unlearning.” [16:23] Breadwinning Women “I actually help my clients and my community, and some of my team members too, to have that conversation, and really make them see that this is an opportunity… because they're now having the space to discuss as a couple, as a team, like ‘Where do we go from here?'” [19:10] Manifesting Money “To come to that point about us needing to be fully healed in order to manifest money is so flawed; it's not true.” [25:14] Healing Journey “At some point, we all feel really alone… but then I decided to just focus on what I needed to create.” [29:18] Starting the Course “I think it was a combination of the energy was there, the trust was there, the aligned action was there; it was just perfect timing. It's a combination of all of that and I put it out there.” [38:06] Knowing Your Identity “If the flow is a good one, flow away. But, if you feel there are bumps in the flow, and if you are feeling like ‘I don't know if this is actually me', then I feel, personally, astrologically, right now is the perfect time for us to ask those questions.” [46:00] Love and Business “It just shows that your heart is opening up. So when you do meet that person, now you know the capacity of your heart… I apply that same principle and concept in business as well.” [53:09] Identity Work “We all have different identities or archetypes within us… I'm choosing to eat this, I'm choosing to wear this, I'm choosing to be around these kind of people, I'm choosing to have these kind of habits, and I'm choosing myself every single day, that's the identity work.” [1:05:45] Discernment “It's just about following that white rabbit… You just feel it. If there's no noise, and if you could just remove that noise a little bit, and you just feel into it, then you will know whether you're supposed to be there or not.” [1:08:59] Tough Love “I think we really need to love the parts of ourselves that we think are ugly… sometimes we need tough love who's gonna tell us ourselves sometimes, like ‘stop'.” Follow Arabelle on instagram @arabelleyee Please download, rate & review this episode and share it with friends! This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business It's Utah Tech Week, a grassroots community celebration of Utah's tech and startup scene. Startups, VCs, and community organizations put together events to serve Utah's tech community. Joining us is Val-Pierre Genton, Founder & CEO of Vision to Growth, with more on an upcoming event. VAL-PIERRE GENTON: Did you know stress and overwork cost US businesses over $500 billion dollars per year? There's a direct connection between stress, anxiety, and depression, and the 50 to 70% of companies that fail within their first 5 to 10 years. On Wednesday, January 25th, we will host a panel discussion on Thriving Under Pressure at Kiln. Hear from the CEOs of Owlet, Homie, Thread Wallets, Taft, and Big Monocle on what mental and emotional pitfalls first-time founders should look out for, how to take care of mental well-being while growing businesses, and available tools and best practices for mental wellness. By helping the next generation of entrepreneurs avoid burnout and care for their mental health in the high-stakes and ever-changing environment of a startup we can boost our business community. Let's be the change to shift the startup lifecycle of “grind and burnout” to “work smart, play more, repeat.” DEREK MILLER: Utah Tech Week is a grassroots event that exists thanks to Scott Paul, Trent Mano and the entire Convoi Ventures team. Hey friends! Welcome to a new episode of the Empower Her Podcast! This week's episode is a solo cast sharing my goals and hope for 2023. Quarter four was a rough one with an incredibly heavy workload and not much margin for fun and relaxation. I was encouraged by a business coach to ask myself why I couldn't have both. It's okay to shoot for big numbers but I can care for myself too. Reflection and Expansion Workbook Walk through the dual actions of reflection and expansion with this guided workbook. This week's episode shares my responses to some of the prompts. Family: My husband and I had a wild 2022 and we are committing to date afternoons. It's easy to get fully focused on our businesses so we are consciously scheduling more time together. Friends: I love time with my girlfriends and I will try to make it out of the house for at least one night a month for girl's night! I'd also like a couple coffee dates in there, just for fun, not business related. Business: It's been a while since I connected 1-on-1 with a business coach. I don't have anyone in mind yet, but I know it's something I need. Shoot me a DM on Instagram if you've worked with someone awesome. I'm also focusing on this Empower Her community and reflecting on how I can really give value, care, and support. Physical Health: I have made the goal to strength train three times per week. On opposite days I will get out for a walk or use my treadmill. I feel so much better when I limit sugar and dairy, so I will keep an eye on that too. Mental Health: This is the year that I prioritize fun! I'm not great at relaxing so I signed up for a lettering workshop with Lovely Little Lights to make a commitment. I'm going to journal more regularly and make meditation part of my routine. Spiritual Health: My faith is super important to me. I am part of a mentoring program at my church and I'd like to attend a women's bible study or something similar. Financial Health: This year I'm working on keeping a personal budget. I'm already learning so much with Val Marlene Creative's Creative Income Cure course. I want to grow in leadership and will challenge myself to grow and develop my speaking skills. BEERS: Pizza and beer are one of the best duos on earth. But using yeast from beer to make the some of the best pizza in the South?! Only the guys at Monday Night Brewing could think such a combo. One of Atlanta's most well-known brewing brands, Monday Night was founded on the notion that “weekends are overrated” (spoiler, we agree). Co-founder Joel Iverson and Brewmaster Peter Kiley join us to chat about the inception of Monday Night, their growth into Birmingham and Nashville, and taking home 27 separate awards this year. Of course, we also break down their journey into making pizza and their innovative idea of re-using yeast from the beer they've made on site. BUSINESS: It feels like all roads on BBB led to this moment. Elon Musk is officially Chief Twit after completing his Twitter takeover. There's already lots to discuss, like Twitter Blue opening up verification to all users at a monthly rate…or fact-checking the White House. What exactly is Elon's end game and how will Twitter change over the next few months and years? BALLS: NFL Contenders & Pretenders returns, and we go down a rabbit hole of just how good (or bad) the AFC East really is. Are the Jets for real? Did the Dolphins make enough moves to compete? Can the Bills go all the way? We also break down some of the big trade deadline deals, and share the disappointment of both the Giants and the Patriots' no-shows. In baseball news, the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies are giving us a show…but now, we don't have a clue what happens next. We're proud to present Manscaped as our latest partner! Trish Higgins is a founding partner of Chenmark, a business that specializes in buying, owning, and operating small businesses. With a strong background in business administration out of college, Trish became a founder of Chenmark in 2013, taking a leap into the unknown and finding great success, something Chenmark represents. From there, Trish began to work with her partners to buy smaller businesses and operate them in the long-term. Starting off with snow removal, Chenmark quickly grew and expanded into many different industries, all the way from landscaping to boat tours. In this interview, Trish takes her years of experience and talks about advice for selling a business, entering new industries, and managing the emotions of a transaction. Advice for Selling a Business "It's hard for somebody to know what your business is worth, because in a financial transaction you have to agree on a price." Chenmark focuses on buying businesses of all shapes and sizes. This has led Trish to many unique experiences when it comes to purchasing a business, and therefore, how to be successful in selling one. When a business is being acquired, transparency is key. Having a clean financial record is an easy way to increase the value of your business and ease the complicated process. Additionally, these records and important aspects of your company's history should be able to be looked at and understood by a third party. Trish states that this is one of the largest factors in buying a business. Not only does it assist the buyer, but this is something that also proves the price of your business, making negotiations a much smoother path to travel. Entering New Industries "It's very natural for someone to be concerned when a new owner is coming in, so we try to show empathy for that." Trish doesn't just buy a business and forget about it. Instead, Chenmark gets to come in and operate the business, which is something important to the community and the owner of the business. As a result, Trish has learned many lessons about entering new industries and having to learn on the fly in a setting where operations can be fast paced and stressful. When Trish entered the attractions industry, the guest experience was one of the most unique challenges she faced. Having worked a guest-facing role before, she knew how to communicate with guests and improve their experience, but it was an even bigger hurdle to jump as an owner. Creating a balance for all guests and not overreacting emotionally to the negative proved successful for her, and these ideologies are implemented across all three boat touring companies Chenmark owns. Managing the Emotions of a Transaction "Often, I find that I'm playing more of a role of therapist in a financial transaction." For many people, selling their small business can be emotionally challenging. Many people refer to their operation as their ‘third child' or ‘pride and joy,' and Trish knows that it's important to show empathy and understand their struggle. In addition, many owners can struggle to be transparent as to why they're selling their business, so it's crucial to be delicate when going about a financial transaction, especially when emotions are involved. Trish shares that the easiest forms of transactions are when somebody else is there to help the owner understand. No matter who the person is, it can help ease them into understanding the future of the operation and create a less emotional way to turn over the keys. Not only this, but this method allows for transparency on both sides, which can make both Chenmark and the owner excited for their futures. Another key aspect is the emotion of the employees. Trish knows from experience that owners can be hesitant to let their employees know they are selling the business, and therefore has created an ever-improving action plan to reduce the stress of the employees and the incoming owners. Things as simple as taking 90 days before making any financial changes to employee income can be incredibly important to create respect, as well as let the owner learn the ins and outs of the operation before any major changes are made. To learn more about Chenmark, head to their website here. To reach out to Trish, you can email her at trish@chenmark.com. EP22: Intimacy, Desire and Business It was mind-blowing, the permission-giving, the desire and the play in receiving. Okay? And so I realized it's the same thing in business desire. How much can we receive? Because that's it, healers. That's it. My women witchy. Woo woo healers. It's not about making it happen. It's not about this push, push, push. Go, go, go. How much can I work energy? It's about. Ah, how do we receive, how do we call it to us? How do we let the clients and the money flow in and support and nourish our world? And so if you've been thinking, I wanna make a lot of money and help people, but mm, I can't be a healer and make lots of money, I want you to know that that's bullshit. And you get to have what you want. You get to have what you want, and it might look differently than you think And this is key desire, expressing what you want. The Technology Whisperers - A Technology and Innovation Podcast
In this episode, Sean and Alistair meet with Cam Chapman, CEO of Fernleaf Consulting where he discusses Business Technology. Business Technology is not a methodology or framework – it's a cultural shift in the way technologists can engage and deliver to their customers. As a Business Technologist, Cam is very passionate about the opportunities it provides for digital technology providers to dissolve the Business/IT divide . We felt that Cam's story (and the reason he started his own business, Fernlead Consulting), really resonates with many parallels being drawn between what we are trying to achieve in demystifying technology in The Technology Whisperers. In this podcast, Cam covers the concept of what Business Technology is (as opposed to Information Technology), and what sort of people Business Technologists actually are. He then goes on to rationalise why organisations should think along the lines of what thor business needs, which answers the ‘Why Business Technology?', We also talk about Shadow IT and Business Technology vs Shadow IT. This is an action packed podcast with lots of great thought provoking ideas that you don't want to miss! cam@fernleafconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/camchapman/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/fernleafconsulting/ https://fernleafconsulting.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/sgmuller/ sean.muller@servian.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/alistairjross/ alistair.ross@servian.com

BEERS: Revival is both one of Rhode Island's staples and up-and-coming locations. Now, with new beers and a new buzz, Will tries the brand-new Extra Thirsty IPA. At 10.5%, where does this stack up among the region's triple IPA's? Everyone loves Trader Joe's, and we're no exception, so Jake takes a crack at one of their thirteen beers you can find in a state where alcohol in grocery stores is legal. Josephsbrau PLZNR is today's choice, and while it's certainly not the best pilsner on the market, Jake's glad he tried it. BUSINESS: It's been a long while since we've had any significant Amazon news, but the recent vote by its front-line workers might have just made up for it. Amazon's Staten Island warehouse will be the first in company history to unionize, and it's sending ripples across the world. Amazon has fought labor unions in its workforce, but now it faces a critical dilemma and still remains at the forefront of the labor crisis - will this throw lead times, staff, and same-day-deliveries into a spiral? Also, we crown our first Entrepreneur of the Week to a German man that was vaccinated 90 times so he could sell the vaccination cards. Kudos… BALLS (27:31): Former NBA player and Duke National Champion Chris Duhon joins the show. We discuss his journey to getting a full scholarship at Duke, being recruited by Coach K, and winning the national championship with Carlos Boozer & Jay Williams in 2001. Chris tells us some of the lessons he learned from Coach K, his philosophy on how the Duke teams should operate, and some of the things that truly make him the best coach of all time. We also discuss his 9-year NBA career as a reliable point guard, including on the 2012-13 “Superteam” LA Lakers with Kobe Bryant. Now an assistant coach at Bryant, Chris tells us about the Bulldogs' first ever conference championship in March, and his first time back at March Madness since 2004. Not only is meaningful, sustainable cultural change possible in the workplace, but it's also something that can be mapped and measured. In this episode of Building Better Cultures, Karen Jones spells out the many elements of the gold standard diagnostic model she deploys as a Managing Director at Denison Consulting. The inquiry starts with a survey of 12 key cultural measures, but those results are not an endpoint. On the contrary, they are meant as a starting place for critical conversations about what's working within a workplace culture – and what most clearly is not. The kind of diagnostic consulting that Karen does depends on tremendous buy-in. While her initial point of entry is most often through Human Resources, the work can't fully succeed unless support comes from the top echelons of leadership. That ownership and willingness to be accountable are what fosters the atmosphere of trust required for employees throughout the ranks. The Denison process depends on candid, vulnerable feedback from team members at every level of the enterprise and, says Karen, that will never happen if they don't feel safe to speak out. And once they do share thoughts? It's on corporate leadership to take real, meaningful steps towards adopting solutions. Failure to put evident muscle behind the outcome of a cultural survey will only leave employees dispirited, if not cynical, about the entire process. Learn how high-performance culture can go to the next level when a concrete methodology, open communication and leadership integrity converge. It's a conversation timelier and more important than ever for companies adapting to today's quickly evolving hybrid workplace. An overview of Denison's model is available here along with other resources To learn more about the Building Better Cultures podcast and related services, visit www.BuildingBetterCultures.com. Key Takeaways: The path through medicine, psychology and research ultimately brought Karen to where she is today, working as a coach and expert on organisational culture. Karen believes culture isn't something that can be summed up quickly, but that can – with the right tools – be measured and modeled. This requires balancing mission in the market and systems/processes to enable desired results. Diagnostic measures assess beliefs and assumptions that people are making in their organisational context – which originate from their own personal context. Throwing terms and affirmations up on a wall or into corporate literature will only breed cynicism if leadership has not committed to putting infrastructure and sustained support around those professed values. The very real impacts of having a toxic team member, even one who is highly successful, and at what point they must be asked to move on. And, if the employee is invited to leave, will leadership make clear that it was a values-based decision? Setting the Bar: Communicating values and systems in support of a high-performance culture will inspire specific conversation about the strengths and challenges to getting there. Culture is Business: It doesn't matter what strategies or innovations leadership tries to implement, it will fail if team members aren't fully bought in. Denison's focus is on ensuring adoption, which requires thoughtful strategic mapping. It's essential to establish an open climate of trust in which behaviors can be discussed and members of the enterprise at all levels feel safe to speak candidly about conditions on the ground. Culture most often sits with HR, but the owner should be the CEO along with the entire senior management team. If the effort is compartmentalized in HR, that's a red flag. It needs to be adopted from the top-down, bottom-up and everywhere in between. Karen's thoughts about the single most impactful thing that leaders can do today to improve their culture: Be curious. Ask your teams how they are feeling, what they need, what they don't have. Set clear expectations and stay open. Key Quotes: “In order to really understand your current state of culture you have to have a mechanism that starts to elevate those beliefs and assumptions that are driving people's perceptions of the business.” “I believe people want to come to work to be their best. They get distracted when systems, processes or indeed people bring them down in motivation or emotionally or tap into fears.” “We have failed as a consulting firm if culture is a separate piece that people do when they have a bit of capacity. Knowing your culture, understanding, diagnosing, discussing it on a daily basis with your teams is really doing culture work.” “You can't create trust. Trust is an outcome of reliability, keeping promises.” “If we've done the strategy mapping, all the leaders understand their contribution to the culture. It's also the responsibility of every single person; every individual creates and impacts culture.” “We have the quantitative number on the measure but after diagnostics, for us, comes honest conversation. The number isn't the be-all, end-all. It's significant, but what really matters is teams sitting down and sharing the story (behind the numbers).” “We like to assume we leave our emotions at the door when we go to work. We absolutely do not. We're human. It's about the being, not the doing.” “Sometimes leadership teams might need to do some work themselves before they're ready for this level of exposure.” About Karen: Karen works closely with clients and certified partners to turn what is often ambiguous and intangible into something energising and productive. She helps organisations define the high-performance culture they are seeking to create in order to drive their business results, through aligning people to their strategy and ensuring they are able to deliver the promises they make to their customers. Working in the board room and the shop floor to align corporate culture and leadership climate, Karen aligns with teams to build their strategic clarity and create an environment that builds commitment. It's Possible - Conversations with Successful Online Trainers
This episode focuses on how to manage feelings of being stuck and what to do when we find ourselves in a rut in life and business. The Episode: What To Do When You're In A Rut The inevitability of better and worse times in your career does not have to be an unnecessarily big problem. Through a little persistence and patience, we can ride out the tough times and will slowly experience the temporary nature of the valley we might fall into. These are lessons that are learned over time and through life, but we are here to affirm you, that some self-awareness, kindness, and faith, can make everything more manageable, even when it does not feel that way! As we have often said on the show, comparisons are almost always the enemy, and the more you can hold that thought in your mind, the easier the tricky periods will be. A slump can be kept in context if we do not spiral into a negative way that exacerbates the issue. Simple and patient action will get you through and prepare you for your next great success! In This Episode Seeing through the plateaus and difficult periods between successes [0:16:23] Staying away from unnecessary comparisons [0:24:41] Getting accustomed to the tough times [0:30:59] The questions and doubts that can creep into the mind [0:33:21] A process to follow to break a negative cycle [0:35:48] Following your own needs with regards to routines and rest [0:38:03] “Success comes, not in short, incremental gains, but quantum leaps.” — Jonathan Good The Hills and Valley of Business It is a common experience to level up in life and business, and then for things to slow down. In order to keep going, we have to learn how to endure these periods, as they can trick you into feeling like a failure! One of the most foundational aspects of this is considering and examining your beliefs about success and money-making, and laying out a plan of unique goals and how to work backward from these. Playing Your Own Game Each of us, to a certain extent, is playing a different game, and we should not be making comparisons between these sports with different goals and different rules! Ask yourself, what you really want from your life and your business, this will allow more space for your own success, and even celebrating others'. Unhealthy comparisons seem to almost be a part of human nature, but that does not mean we cannot learn better habits! Negative Cycles and Thought Patterns The first time we go through a dip or a tough time with our business, it can be very hard and overwhelming. There is no easy answer, as we have to just stick it out, identify what is happening, and catch your thought patterns. These cycles can lead to questioning and doubts, and there are definite trigger points for this, often when we are less productive or inspired. The issue here is that the doubts and comparisons are mostly based on assumptions rather than reality, so as soon as we start making choices from a place of more awareness we can take action against any feelings of despair! An emotional connection often exists between creatives and our creations. We want to have an influence and an impact with what we do. So it’s easy to take it personally when people either like or dislike our work. Yet there are many ways to stay in control when putting your creations out into the world. Key Takeaways When presenting early drafts to clients, the less you critique, the better. Second-guessing your work to your clients can lead down the wrong path of unnecessary revisions. Instead, focus on what you’re excited and happy about. As creatives, we’re trying to strike a balance between sharing what we do with the world while still turning a profit. To maintain that balance over the long-run, you need to constantly reassess your process. Sometimes it means growing a team. Other times, you’ll need to take on more roles yourself. About Josiah Moore Josiah Moore is a freelance director and editor from upstate New York. Josiah stays busy in all aspects of music video production, be it client communication, shooting, building sets, and late nights editing. Balancing Creativity and Business It can be tough striking a balance as both creatives and entrepreneurs. Josiah knows the experience of creating projects that then become the property of his clients. It’s difficult to create something that is yours only to hand ownership of it to someone else. Josiah finds that making his own behind-the-scenes videos is to share with his followers is a great creative outlet. Passion projects are also a great way to stay motivated to do what you love. The Value of Good Communication As someone who handles so many aspects of a production, Josiah finds that upfront communication with clients is paramount. Letting them know the revision process and what it will cost prevents scope creep. Being clear on the shooting and editing schedule will keep things on track. Most of all, being in clear communication about your process and pricing builds and maintains the relationships that will drive your business in the long run. What’s your long-term plan? Do you have a plan for retirement? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! What’s your revision process like? Let’s talk about it in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode: The process of profiting with music videos [5:19] Using behind-the-scene footage to engage with an audience [7:15] The emotional vulnerability that accompanies our creative works [11:30] Harnessing efficiency to maximize profitability [17:15] Different ways to approach the revision process [21:12] [25:16] How to consider the long-term aspects of freelance work [30:00] Why gear lust will stunt your growth [38:56] Quotes “How can I engage with and grow an audience that is invested in me as a creative rather than the people I work for?” [8:47] “I’ve been finding when I really try to strip back and try to do the bare minimum and grind a little bit harder and take on a couple more roles myself, it’s really not going to hurt the project. We’re going to be able to be that much quicker, more efficient, and profitable.” [18:50] “I think the struggle is that, as a creative person, I often find myself falling into thinking that whatever my latest work is is how I present myself. I don’t think that has to be the case. I still think you can have passion projects.” [37:54] Links: Sign up for the free Studio Sherpas Webclass Storyblocks Find Josiah Moore online Follow Josiah on Instagram | Twitter | YouTube Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? EPISODE 10 - CHILDREN ARE FROM HEAVEN Welcome to DREAM TO SHINE show. I'm Loreta and in this episode, let's talk about CHILDREN ARE FROM HEAVEN… As parent we all have dreams to be the best parent we could ever be an improved version of our parents. We learn from our parents stories and breakthroughs. I, have a 21 years old son, his name is Paulo Jhimmel, a graduate of Business IT in Singapore Polytecnic and serving the army, I have 14 years old daughter, her name is Jade. Paulo named his sister after Jackie Chan's niece Jade in the cartoon series. How to be a good parent? Raising a child … Raising children, my mother-in-law has 8!!! My husband is the 2nd son. My mother has 3 daughters (excluding) my still born brother Every CHILD is A GIFT a Blessing from God I have lots of Fears due to the vicious cycle of victims of victims and that I won't be a good mother to my children. Or that I would do the things my parents do to my children. But my love for children exceeds everything else. I praise and the Lord for blessing me with a son, I knew right then and there that I'm gonna be having a son. I felt like Mama Mary when she got the dream and vision that she will have to bear Jesus the Savior. And when she said “Fiat, be it done unto me according to Your word”. Being a Mother is really the toughest job of all. And just carrying the child for 9 months is already tough enough. I had a very difficult pregnancy, not able to eat, I survived the 1st 3 months with skyflakes and instant noodles, the rest of the food got this fishy smell that I can't take, I was hospitalized for low hemoglobin, etc My son was already 6 years old when we received another blessing, and this time I also knew and felt that for my 2nd child, I'm gonna have a daughter. It was a different pregnancy experience, at 7 months I hiked and trailed McRitchie Tree Top Hill. The parents' responsibility setting a good example a role model on how to overcome challenges ... 4x4 leadership Teach Children to be: Be yourself as God who created you to be Be Confident Independent Be responsible Apply the Love languages to children I hope this episode about CHILDREN ARE FROM HEAVEN will inspire and empower you to make your dream to be the best parent that you could ever be fulfilled. I look forward to seeing you in my next episode where I will be sharing more of my personal journey and breakthroughs on how you too could DREAM TO SHINE. - Community Life and support group Choir or Music Ministry Youth Ministry Charismatic Community I hope this episode about LOVE IS A DECISION will inspire and empower you to make your dream marriage and relationship fulfilled. I look forward to seeing you in my next episode where I will be sharing more of my personal journey and breakthroughs on how you too could DREAM TO SHINE.
Today we’re talking about episode 2 of Season 5, and it’s called “Back in Business” It first aired in the US on May 22nd, 2005. This episode played back to back with the season 5 premiere episode. It was written by Del Shores, his sixth of eight episodes, and he also produced 41 episodes of the show. “Back in Business” was directed by Michael DeCarlo, his tenth of eleven episodes. Most recently he directed “Proposal of Two Kinds” in season four. We weren’t a big fan of that episode, but we did like his episode from season 2 called Bowling for Equality, which was the cops versus queers bowling match. Here’s the synopsis of “Back in Business.” A tug of war breaks out over JR when Michael hires a lawyer to gain joint custody of the infant. In the background, Lindsay starts to consider her own parental rights and asks Brian to get Michael to back off. Justin returns from Hollywood and mysteriously tells everyone except Brian how much he hated it, and how he was glad to be back in Pittsburg. Ted has what can best be described as a mid-life crisis and bleaches his hair, punches up his clothing, and starts considering plastic surgery. In a story line directly stolen from Bravo, Emmett is offered a job as an on-air Queer Guy for a local television station.
We often think that trust is something our co-workers have to earn. But trust is an emotion, meaning we create it for ourselves from how we choose to think. Today Emily and Alison Moses, Director of Business IT at HomeServe, talk about trust. Learn why we have to trust our reports if we want them to grow (and how to recognize when you're not), how to bootstrap trust for a co-worker you don't know very well, and two ways to generate trust (or any other feeling) for yourself whenever you want. We also discuss what Michael sees as a must-do for financial advisers in 2020 and beyond to produce tangible statistics on the advice provided. If you or any of your colleagues want to make your business planning process world-class, then you should not miss this episode. Sit back and tune in to the show! About Our Guest: Michael Back is the legendary business coach and self-proclaimed Customer Experience Enthusiast. Michael is the founder of Human to Human, where he helps financial advisers to set goals, track progress and facilitate implementation towards success. He has worked in the financial industry for over 12 years coaching over 75 financial advice businesses. Achieve Your Business Goals in 90 Days Making Better Decisions in Business It's impossible to make better decisions without an endpoint. The first step is to realise the goal and what's important to the business. All team members should have a connection to the goal you're trying to achieve. Have better conversations by asking better questions from the outset. Adding Value to Your Team The right mindset: Be brave, take risks, and leave your comfort zone. Businesses struggle when they stay stagnant and keep doing things the same way. "You can't solve a problem with the same thinking that created it." Setting Goals: The OKR Framework Google, Intel, Spotify, LinkedIn, and Airbnb, among others, use this to align their team to a bigger version of success they're looking to achieve. The concept: Collaborative business planning within four to six hours, based on a series of 90-day plans. In 90 days, you get to know what problems you need to solve and what metrics you need to change and implement the solution in the next 90 days. It gets the whole team involved in deciding the business focus. It is an excellent bridge to give people accountability for projects they're not sure would work. Consequently, it allows teams to make better plans and action steps through the acquired data. OKR: Objective Decide on the direction and envision the bigger picture version of what you want success to look like. OKR: Key Results There's no point to having objectives if you can't measure them. Key results are the specific numbers that are 100% measurable and verified. This data keeps you updated on whether you're on track towards your goals. Its role is to reduce the average implementation time. Brainstorming Action You want the OKRs in a format that's good to go. Brainstorm with your team about the actions they need to take to achieve your goal. Get them to come up with ideas for shifting the key result numbers. Know which ideas you're going to filter in and out over the next 90 days. Do not overestimate what you can achieve in a small amount of time. Be aware of what is realistic. Determine the items you need to take off your list. Environment and immersive experience are vital in igniting creative space. 2020 Focus Get tangible statistics through measuring quantitative data of your client's feelings before and after the first meeting. Through this, you can articulate your value to your clients, and you get to gauge how they're feeling. This can be done through online survey tools or forms. En tillidsmaskine, en revolution, det nye internet; det er bare nogle af de mærkater, der sættes på en af tidens mest hypede teknologier: blockchain. The holy grail for IT leadership is Business/IT alignment. Perhaps if IT leadership took a step back and focused instead on converging Business and IT strategy, business alignment would become a moot point. Has business and IT strategy convergence ever really been tried? If so, did it work? What were the challenges?
At many times IT leaders may go with a *generic* IT solution rather than a branded focused custom IT solution, built to specific business requirements with corporate strategy in mind. While we pay lip service to Business-IT alignment and innovation mantras, are we truly contributing to making alignment and innovation a reality when we settle for the easier path of least resistance and the status quo?
