Have you ever woken up after a full night's sleep and still felt completely drained? Or noticed how stress doesn't just stay in your head—it shows up in your stomach, your heart, and even your energy levels? There's a reason for that, and it all comes back to the vagus nerve. This incredible nerve is your body's reset button, but for so many of us, it's running on “low power mode.” That's why stress lingers, digestion falters, and energy feels elusive. In this week's episode, we're exploring how the vagus nerve connects your gut, brain, and heart—literally shaping how you respond to life's challenges. From calming inflammation to boosting mental clarity and improving digestion, this nerve is the key to unlocking resilience. And the best part? Learning how to activate it doesn't require fancy tools or time-consuming routines—just a few simple changes that fit into your life right now. Joining me is Dr. Navaz Habib, a Doctor of Chiropractic and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner specializing in optimizing the body's autonomic nervous system and its connection to overall health. Ever wondered why the gut is referred to as your second brain? Let's talk about it. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Navaz Habib, the bestselling author of Activate Your Vagus Nerve, and the newly released Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve. We sat down to discuss the importance of the vagus nerve—the only cranial nerve that connects to every organ within your body—the role it plays in your gut, brain, and immune health, the significance of heart rate variability, and why you should be more intentional with your breathing.  In this episode, you'll discover: What the Vagus Nerve Does: Learn more about how the vagus nerve relays status information about your organ functions to the brain.  The Four Areas of Stressors: Working in harmony with the immune system, the vagus nerve can influence inflammation. Triggers include daily, psychological, physical, and biochemical stressors, says Dr. Habib. How Heart Rate Variability Informs the Vagus Nerve Function: Dr. Habib shares that when your HRV is in a good zone (this varies by individual), your body is better able to send signals to the brain through the vagus nerve.  Why Breathing Properly Is Key: Improve your sympathetic-parasympathetic balance—resulting in an increased HRV—by breathing through your nose, not your mouth. 01:59 Dr. Habib's Journey to Functional Medicine 08:17 Understanding the Vagus Nerve 18:46 The Role of the Vagus Nerve in Inflammation 34:04 Understanding HRV and Its Importance 34:39 Accuracy of Different HRV Measurement Devices 36:34 Using HRV Data for Trends, Not Diagnostics 37:07 Personal Experiences and HRV Improvement 40:15 Breathing Techniques to Improve HRV 42:35 The Role of the Diaphragm in Effective Breathing 46:47 Testing and Improving Your BOLT Score 50:27 Altitude Training and HRV 54:38 Vagus Nerve Dysfunction and Long COVID 57:21 Vagus Nerve Stimulation Devices Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Habib: Website: https://drnavazhabib.kartra.com/page/HUhome Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drnavazhabib/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/DrNavazHabib Podcast: The Health Upgrade podcast Book: Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve Book: Activate Your Vagus Nerve The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown Truvaga Vagus Nerve Stimulator.

Today, Sachin discusses the vagus nerve with Dr. Navaz Habib. Dr. Habib has written the book, Activate Your Vagus Nerve. He continues to learn about the vagus nerve and its role in supporting the parasympathetic nervous system that leads to healing inflammation and associated ills. Sachin and Navaz cover the differences between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and how to optimize the parasympathetic nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve. Listen in to learn of some great tools for activating the vagus nerve in your patients or yourself.   Key Takeaways: [1:03] Sachin welcomes listeners to Perfect Practice. Today, Sachin is speaking with Dr. Navaz Habib. Sachin introduces Navaz and thanks him for joining the podcast.   [2:08] Navaz credits Sachin for bringing him into the realm of functional medicine.   [2:44] In 2019, Navas released his book, Activate Your Vagus Nerve. He received a lot of supportive feedback. Since that time, Navaz has learned that he knows very little about the vagus nerve. The more you think you know, the more you realize you don't. Navaz has been learning more every day.   [3:33] Navaz has learned that the vagus nerve … controls things in the same way that other nerves do. But it is … bridging the gap … in … understanding how the body functions … and how the brain has a way to control and support how the immune system and inflammation function within the body.   [5:01] Our lifestyles have changed over the last 50 years. We've gone from being outdoors taking care of our land to sitting indoors, eating processed food. Our bodies haven't had the ability to adapt to these changes of being indoors, less active, and constantly comfortable. That has created an opportunity for our bodies to be primed for an inflammatory response.   [6:45] The autonomic nervous system sends signals from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain. The brain sends signals to areas of the body that need attention and shifts our state in either a sympathetic or parasympathetic direction. The sympathetic side of the nervous system is “fight or flight.” The parasympathetic side is the “rest and digest (& recovery)” system.   [8:44] The parasympathetic nervous system, mediated by the vagus nerve, is in control when we are not under direct threat. The vagus nerve is the only nerve that goes to essentially every organ within the thorax and abdomen. It dictates where the blood will flow and what state our body is in. That drives inflammation.   [9:59] Eighty-one percent of the information on the vagus nerve is afferent (sensory) information from the body to the brain. The sensory information is not the same as the traditional five senses.   [11:01] Sachin compares stimulating the vagus nerve to pushing a button that heals every cell, organ, tissue, and system in your body simultaneously. It's too good to believe because it's simple.   [11:42] Navaz explains why we need to shift our state to parasympathetic. We are in a state of sympathetic overdrive all the time, stimulated by our screens for hours on end. We need our gaze to be wider, as it would be out in nature if we were farming or walking. One way to shift your state is to go outside and shift your gaze. Get off your computer.   [12:42] Your breath also influences your state. Are you breathing effectively or ineffectively? Put one hand on your belly and one on your chest. Take a deep breath. Which hand moves first? They should both move, but the hand on your belly should move first. That's a sign that you're breathing using your diaphragm and you are likely not in a state of stress.   [13:34] If you're stressed out and you're in an emotional situation, somebody will say, ‘Take a deep breath,' and that will help you get into a calmer zone where you start to think a little bit more clearly and that's shifting you to parasympathetic. Rest, digest, recover and think more clearly during that state. Breath is the key to all of this.   [15:45] Research shows that you shouldn't be either sitting or standing too long. Postural dysfunction will occur whether you are sitting for six hours or standing for six hours. Postural dysfunction creates local inflammation. The vagus nerve alerts the brain of that inflammation. Navaz gives his hypothesis that it's best to shift between sitting and standing.   [17:27] Navaz offers ideas for stimulating the vagus nerve. Make breathing a little more challenging and teach yourself to breathe through your diaphragm even when you're under stress. Gargling, humming, deep breathing exercises, anything that helps activate the vocal cords.   [17:54] Nineteen percent of the information flowing through the vagus nerve consists of motor signals flowing from the brain stem to muscles, such as the pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles that maintain a patent open airway in the back of the throat and tensioning and lengthening the vocal cords to create pitch and tone.   [19:03] Navaz explains why you might shed tears when you gargle, and how that demonstrates a parasympathetic state! He tells of the benefits of gargling. It creates hormetic stress and resilience.   [21:03] Laughing helps the function of the vagus nerve like gargling and it has a social aspect, as well. Social connection supports health.   [22:13] Texting and email have interfered with meeting people. Being in the room with people builds connection.   [24:04] Some people with health challenges need an extra push to stimulate their vagus nerve. Navaz uses tools such as the gammaCore Sapphire from ElectroCore to stimulate the vagus nerve electrically and significantly improve the pain from migraine and cluster headaches. Vagus nerve stimulation is often the missing piece to get inflammation down and under control.   [29:57] Navaz says the vagus nerve stimulation via the gammaCore SapphireTM is entirely pain-free. It's very high-frequency and very low-voltage. It doesn't create muscle contraction. However, if you have an implanted metal device such as a pacemaker or cervical spine implant, above the shoulders, this device is not recommended.   [31:49] The gammaCore SapphireTM has not been studied on children in research. The inventor of the device used it on his eight-year-old daughter for eczema with good results but it has not been studied.   [33:12] Navaz had an elite skater patient. She had had many falls, some resulting in concussions. She had suffered from eating disorders when young and came to Dr. Navaz with digestive issues, mild depression, and Hashimoto's. Dr. Navaz tried the functional medicine approach and there were some small changes. The patient suffered another concussion.   [34:11] Dr. Navaz had her use the gammaCore SapphireTM during recovery. She noticed that this was the quickest she had ever rebounded from a head injury. She started noticing improvements in her digestion. Her pain was better. Her mood and her sleep shifted. She also came out of her depression. She credits all these changes to the healing of her inflammation.   [37:54] Dr. Navaz shares links for more information.   [38:39] Sachin thanks his friend Dr. Navaz Habib for joining the podcast today. Sachin recommends the book Activate Your Vagus Nerve and Navaz shares the link for it.   Mentioned in this episode Perfect Practice Live gammaCore SapphireTM VagusNerveBook.com Activate Your Vagus Nerve: Unleash Your Body's Natural Ability to Heal, by Dr. Navaz Habib Oura Ring HRV   Dr. Navaz Habib Dr. Navaz Habib is the founder of Health Upgraded, an online Functional Medicine and Health Optimization clinic, working with high-performing professionals, athletes, and entrepreneurs to dig deeper and find the answers to what is holding back their health. In this episode, Dr. Navaz Habib shares the importance of the Vagus Nerve in connection with autoimmunity and inflammation, and how we can improve our vagal tone to improve our health.Dr. Habib is the author of Activate Your Vagus Nerve and host of "The Health Upgrade Podcast."  He is the founder of Health Upgraded, an online Functional Medicine and health optimization clinic.  He teaches how we can optimize productivity, focus and energy levels, and ultimately our health by upgrading the Vagus Nerve. At the time he graduated from chiropractic school, Dr. Habib was very unhealthy.  He was overweight, had high blood sugar and blood pressure, and felt like an imposter teaching others about wellness.  He and his (now) wife, wanted something different for their children."Being healthy is different than simply being without diagnosable conditions."What is the Vagus Nerve? The Vagus Nerve is the 10th cranial nerve.  (We have 12.)It is the only cranial nerve that leaves the head and it connects to every organ system in the body.It is "The Wandering Nerve"It travels down either side of the neck in the carotid sheath and reconnects as one in the thoracic region, goes through the diaphragm, and on to connect with all of the other organ systems. It sends information from the organs to the brain.  This is how it directly relates to inflammation.  When inflammation is sensed in the body, the Vagus nerve signals the brain. The Vagus Nerve IS the Gut-Brain axis! The Vagus Nerve can hit the brakes on inflammation, which is why vagal tone is so important.  If you don't have good vagal tone, the gas stays stuck on and the inflammation continues unchecked. How do you know if you have good Vagal Tone?If you have a resting heart rate between 50-70, you are likely in the parasympathetic state and it would indicate good vagal tone.A resting heart rate over 70, indicates that you are likely in a sympathetic state - fright or flight - stress state...gas pedal stuck on.Wearable trackers are useful in assessing and observing both heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV).HRV is the time (milliseconds) between heart beats.  Ideally, that time is varied, which shows as a higher HRV and indicates resilience.Tracking with a device such as Oura ring, Whoop strap, or Elite HRV can allow you to observe trends and work on improving health by strengthening vagal tone.Take Action for Free!Chant, hum, gag, gargle!Dr. Habib recommends gargling twice a day, when you brush your teeth.Aggressive gargling!  Gargle until tears come out of your eyes.  That is how you know you have activated your brain stem.Practice and work your way up... you will get there! The one thing you can start today...BREATHEDeep, diaphragmatic, belly breathing.Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly.Breathe so that your belly is moving, and not your chest.Three diaphragmatic breaths will get you into the parasympathetic state...which is essential for healing and optimized health.Do this several times a day!

How to Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve with a TENS DeviceUPDATED Vagus Nerve Stimulation Video with new Ear ClipsResearch Studies on Vagus Nerve and Brain (video)Vagus Nerve Stimulation "has been life-changing!" (video)BUY a TENS and EAR CLIPS: www.autoimmunedocpodcast.comThe Vagus Nerve is the primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, and it has gained wild popularity lately in the scientific and biohacking, alternative wellness, and autoimmune disease communities. As the primary nerve of the PNS, the vagus is largely responsible for "pushing the brakes" on the stress response, the sympathetic nervous system. The vagus innervates the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, gallbladder, diaphragm, entire digestive tract, and more. It's two way nerve 'superhighway system' acts as the modulator of the "gut-brain connection", sending sensory signals upward from all of your organs and sending signals downward regulating stomach acid, enzyme, and bile release, digestive motility, and more, and back up to your brain. Decreased vagal tone is associated with both inflammatory digestive diseases as well as psychiatric diseases like depression and PTSD. The vagus also sends nerves to the spleen, and its activation blocks the release of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNFa), and in the liver blocks Interleukin 6 release from Kuppfer cells, all through something called the Cholinergic Anti-Inflammatory pathway. The only place on the outside of the body that the vagus nerve travels is part of the ear, oddly enough, but the vagus nerve can be stimulated by acupressure or my preferred method which I talk about in the podcast - using an inexpensive TENS Device with an ear clip. The vagus nerve can also be stimulated by yoga, mediation, acupuncture, chiropractic, deep breathing, contrast showers, humming, gargling, and gagging, and I speak on all of these things in this episode!

WOW, this episode is packed full of root-cause related information that I hope will inspire you. I brought Dr. Navaz Habib to talk about this one specific nerve that controls and regulates so many functions of the body. If you or someone you love suffers with IBS, obesity and weight gain, chronic fatigue, depression irregular heartbeat, ulcers, weight loss, gastroparesis, chronic inflammation, epilepsy, high blood pressure, diabetes, trouble urinating, fertility problems, sexual pleasure, anxiety, heart disease cancer, poor circulation, leaky gut, Alzheimer's, memory and mood issues, migraines headaches, fibromyalgia, tinnitus, addictions, or any autoimmune conditions… I highly recommend listening to this episode about our vagus nerve. (Yes, THAT many manifestations + more)  The sheer amount of diseases and symptoms in the parts of this body that this nerve innervates is a testament to how important it is to maintain your health. Stick around for this entire episode to learn how this is truly the root of so many of our issues and one of the biggest underutilized discussions and Western medicine while I talk to Dr. Navaz Habib about how we can stimulate our Vagus nerve to ensure that this nerve is functioning optimally. (Also, listen for information about a FREE GIVEAWAY and DISCOUNT for a highly helpful essential oil blend.) In this episode: How living in fight or flight hurts your brain and body Where “sympathetic” 24/7 is NOT a good thing How our vagus nerve connects with our immune system in riding our body of toxins Learn how easy it is to improve your vagal tone with simple exercises Vagus Nerve The function that it imparts is extensive. In the brain itself, it helps control anxiety and mood. In the gut, it increases stomach acidity, gut flow/motility and other digestive enzyme production. Low stomach acid is a major source of gut-related health conditions so an underactive vagus nerve is correlated to the root cause of many health conditions. In the heart, it controls heart rate variability, heart rate and blood pressure. In the pancreas it controls blood sugar balance and digestive enzymes. In the liver it controls bile production and detoxification through hepatic phase 1 and phase 2 conjugation. In the gallbladder it controls bile release to help break down fats. In the kidneys, it promotes general function including water balance, glucose control and sodium excretion which helps control blood pressure. In the bladder it controls voiding of urine. In the spleen it helps to reduce inflammation. In the sex organs it helps to control fertility and sexual pleasure including orgasms. In the mouth and tongue, it helps to control ability to taste and saliva production through salivary gland control. In the eyes, it activates tear production through the lacrimal glands. Vagus nerve stimulation has the potential to help those suffering from various health conditions, including but certainly not limited to anxiety disorders, heart disease, some forms of cancer, poor circulation, leaky gut syndrome, alzheimer’s, memory and mood disorders, migraines and headaches, fibromyalgia, obesity, tinnitus, addiction, autism and autoimmune conditions.  Dr. Habib’s book “Activate Your Vagus Nerve” is a simple to follow guide to help you identify and address a major missing piece in patients dealing with chronic health concerns such as anxiety and depression. Here are the top 10 related disorders: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Obesity and weight gain Chronic fatigue Depression Irregular heartbeat; too slow or fast  Ulcers, Stomach acid issues and/or H. pylori Weight loss Gastroparesis Chronic inflammation  Epilepsy But how does this pertain to my hormones? In the immune system we have 70% of our immune cells by volume located in the lining of the gut in what's called “gut associated lymphoid tissue”. What happens is we either have foods that can trigger leaky gut, aka intestinal hyperpermeability, or we have bacteria that are backed up or or dysbiotic within an hour but are going to break down the gut lining and trigger an immune response. When that happens, we are overburdening our liver with toxins that need to be immediately or as quickly as possible eliminated from our body, and we're increasing toxic burden. The liver plays a major role in control of nearly everything, all of the hormones, all of the blood sugar balance, all of the things that come into the body essentially need to go through the liver first and need to be controlled through the liver. Quotes “Many chronic illnesses are multifactorial, there is not a single positive event with symptoms and signs that happen afterwards. Finding a specific diagnosis is the reason why the ICD-10 codes are now up to 20,000. It’s like if we say, “Okay you've got acid reflux, we’ll give you a proton pump inhibitor.” What you're doing is saying that the only way that this possibly could have happened is because you have too much stomach acid. You're not asking the question “why is there too much stomach acid?” [22:55] “When going to a parasympathetic state what's actually happening is our blood flow increases to the prefrontal cortex or ability to learn and think and be in that conscious state. By being told to not question something we're actually saying stop using your prefrontal cortex sending the blood just to the lizard brain to the survival centers would put you in your sympathetic zone all the time.” [27:40] “We cannot recover when we're under stress, where you send blood flow is where you send function. If we are under stress and under that sympathetic system, blood flows to the muscles of the arms and the legs so we can either run away or fight against whatever the threat is that we feel is coming towards us.” [34:30] “70 to 80% of us are in sympathetic mode 70 to 80% of the time and that's where the problem lies. It's supposed to be almost the exact opposite that we should only be in sympathetic mode about 10 to 30% of the time at absolute maximum.” [36:25] Resources http://drhabib.ca/2016/07/activate-vagus-nerve/ Links Follow Diane on Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest | Twitter | YouTube Join the Cleanse, Heal, Ignite for Natural Beauty & BII Facebook Group Visit here to grab your own Parasympathetic Oil Blend bottle now Dr. Habib’s book “Activate Your Vagus Nerve” Watch our MasterClass & Get to the Root of Hormone, Auto-Immune and Breast Implant Illness Symptoms

Dr. Habib introduces the audience to the vital functions of the vagus nerve and how activating it can optimize our productivity and energy levels. Nerves are the information transfer tunnels between the brain and the rest of the body The vagus nerve plays four major functions: Around 80% of the information that is presented or remains on the vagus nerves comes from our organs, upward to the brain. It tells the brain what is happening in the gut and when your body has experienced any trauma. About 15% of information on the vagus nerve is going from the brain to an organ, parasympathetically About 3% of the information on the vagus nerve goes to the muscles at the back of the throat and vocal cords Strive to keep your airways strong and open Sleep apnea, emphysema, COPD are issues that decrease vagus nerve function  The great auricular nerve in the center part of the ear is a specific sensory branch of the vagus nerve   Causes of Disrupting Vagus Nerve Functions Excess inflammation can be harmful to the vagus nerve function Inflammatory foods stimulate inflammation Over time, excessive inflammation wears down the vagus nerve as it constantly acting as the “brakes” to our inflammatory system   Vagus Nerve + Mental Health and Behavior Approx. 94% of the serotonin in our body is produced in the gut and located in our enteric nervous system An imbalance in neurotransmitters working from the gut to the brain are strongly linked to anxiety and depression Those neurotransmitters are being signaled to the brain through the vagus nerve Often these imbalances are also seen in behavioral issues  Addressing gut health is essential    Assessing Vagus Nerve Function Assess bowel transit time Drink a glass of water with a spoonful of white sesame seeds and track when you discover them in yours or your child's stool An ideal bowel transit time would be for the seeds to begin appearing between 16-24 hours Assess heart rate variability Tools like Corsense Elite HRV, HeartMath, Oura ring   Strategies To Optimize and Activate Vagus Nerve Function Working on deep breathing work at least 3x a day  Learn to breathe correctly from your belly versus your chest Humming  Simple humming with your children at mealtime or in the morning and at bedtime will help bring you into a calm state Gargling Practicing gargling water or saltwater every morning and night This activity forces you to work the muscles at the back of the throat Listening to music and sounds of nature/birds chirping  Having your child lay silently and listen to music or natures sounds of birds chirping can help in calming down Great technique to use before bed   Where to learn more about Dr. Navaz Habib... An essential requirement for any type of physical healing is to get the nervous system out of the chronic stress state in which most of us reside and into the opposite anti stress state, parasympathetic dominance, which allows for a relaxation, restoration and healing. The cranial nerve that governs this revitalizing system is called the vagus nerve and learning to activate it in myriad ways can mean the difference between healing or not. What is the vagus nerve and what are some simple strategies that we can do to activate it? Get a load of some really amazing information from Activate Your Vagus Nerve author, Dr. Navaz Habib. Enjoy! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode51. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The vagus nerve Some common signs of vagus nerve dysfunction. The effect of stress on the vagus nerve The four major functions of the vagus nerve Strategies and tips to activate the vagus nerve Where sleep and digestion come into play Autoimmune conditions Key Takeaways: If you have poor vagus nerve function, you will experience poor digestion, inflammation, IBS, issues of liver detoxification, even autoimmunity. 12 to 24 hours after you eat a meal, you should be eventually releasing the waste of that meal. Optimally, around 16 hours is the best amount of time. When you don’t have a gallbladder, what’s actually going on is you’re living is going to be extra stressed in being able to push out bile and get toxins out of the body but help to absorb the fats. The four major functions of the vagus nerve: Afferent function Parasympathetic function Motor functions Sensory function to a portion of the ear One of the tools that you can use to see if the vagus nerve isn’t working well is the tone of voice. If you know somebody that has a very monotonous voice and they aren’t able to raise pitch or go up and down with their voice, then that is a sign that the signaling in the vagus nerve is actually quite poor because the muscles aren’t being used correctly. We can actually use auricular acupuncture to treat vagus nerve dysfunction. Gargling is a great tool for activating the vagus nerve. But you have to gargle the right way, up to the point that you tear up. If you’re not able to tear out of our eyes, you’re probably not activating the nuclei inside the brain stem of vagus enough. Heart rate variability is actually a direct sign of vagus nerve function. People that sleep on their right side tend to have higher heart rate variability and tend to be better nose breathers. Action Steps: Monitor your bowel transit time. If it’s too fast or too slow, that’s a sign that the vagus nerve is not doing its job correctly. Get auricular acupuncture treatment to stimulate vagus nerve activity. Practice gargling every morning and evening, in the right way. Make sure that you breathe through your nose, not through your mouth. Try using Breathe Right strips or a mouth tape. Make sure that you chew your food very well and that you’re not eating under stressed circumstances. Go away from the stressful environment of your desk or your work station and get out and do something a little bit different. Be in a calm, relaxed environment. Before you eat, do some humming or chanting or some deep breathing exercises to help activate the vagus nerve.   Navaz said: “What the vagus nerve really is, is the major connection between the gut and all of the organs inside our body directly to our brain. It is the gut-brain axis… It is essentially the controlling pathway by which our body is able to recover, rest, digest, and actually function optimally.” “You are what you eat, digest, absorb, and don’t eliminate… If you’re not absorbing it, it’s not going to get into your body, it’s going to get into your cells, and then it’s not doing the job that it needs to do.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:   SIGN UP by tonight (March 5th, 2019) to Access the Exclusive Hormone Masterclass.   If you have any questions, connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie.
