Jens Bache is not your ordinary Ashtanga yoga practitioner or teacher. He came to yoga as a highly celebrated Engineer, in the middle of a very normal career trajectory, yet he was looking for more… Life had to have more meaning. He felt isolated and stressed. Then in 1997, on a work-study trip in Berkeley California, Jens Bache experienced yoga for the first time. “A daily yoga practice at home gave me the peace of mind I was looking for.” When he returned to Copenhagen he participated in his first workshop in 1999, and quite unexpectedly, he became the main instigator in creating an Ashtanga Yoga grassroots community in Copenhagen. As Jens said, he had a unique set of ‘process oriented skills' from his Business degree in Project Management, which were badly needed in the yoga community. And so, this kind of self reliance in Jens grew into the first Mysore-style school that he nurtured along with Susanna Finocchi for 18 years. In 2003, Jens traveled to Mysore to learn from Guruji at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute and continued returning annually since this first visit. He enjoyed expanding his knowledge about Indian philosophy, culture, and all things yoga. And, quickly, yet not surprisingly, Jens was soon relied upon by the Jois family themselves to run their European Tour stops! So, luckily for you, in this episode, you'll find out exactly what it might be like to host a tour stop with Sharath Jois and his family! Jens has been the primary catalyst in bringing Sharath Jois to Copenhagen 6 times now, the first tour being in 2006 with the whole family, including Guruji (Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) and Saraswathi. He has risen to the occasion again and again and hopes to have the honour once again this summer, in conjunction with his partner Lisa Lalér, co-owner of the Yoga Shala Stockholm, to host Sharathji on tour. Jens translated Sri K. Pattabhi Jois' book ”Yoga Mala” into Danish and is one of the masterminds behind the documentaries ”Guruji in Copenhagen” and ”Sharath in Copenhagen.” Jens obtained a Masters degree in Indology – the study of Indian history, literature, philosophy and culture – from the Copenhagen University, and now acts as a “Cultural Broker” mediating between companies in Denmark and India to facilitate a greater understanding between organizations, through cultural translation. Merry Christmas! For this year-end special we have a little present for you all. Some Magic! We would like to introduce you to an incredibly interesting practitioner and teacher, Andrew Eppler. At one time, he was a kind of young-prince in the Ashtanga Yoga culture. Introduced to the practice by the late Cliff Barber as a 14 year old. He was Guy Donahaye's first Ashtanga teacher in Oxford when he was assisting Danny Paradise, as a 19 year old. Andrew has given us all an incredible gift. He has made and produced the documentary film: The Mysore Yoga Traditions. This film is a deep dive into the myriad practices and teachers, who are alive, available, and relevant in Mysore today. “Tradition” is a funny word. It comes from the Latin Tradere: to hold on to. And so, quite literally means attachment. But it begs the question: How can we have a system to reproduce enlightenment without being attached to certain things? Does enlightenment arise spontaneously? Or do we need to cultivate and nurture the conditions to support this arousal? Andrew Eppler began practicing yoga with his father, Ray Eppler, at age 14. Cliff Barber was their first teacher. Three years later, Andrew began travelling the world, studying with many teachers including Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Mr. BNS Iyengar, Cliff Barber, David Williams and Danny Paradise. In 1992, Andrew lived with David Williams for several weeks, and continued to visit and practice with him over the next 18 years. Enjoying a friendship forged in yoga, trust and admiration. David's views on yoga were very influential for Andrew. Andrew continued to journey to Mysore to study pranayama, philosophy, and mudras with Sri BNS Iyengar. The ascetic lifestyle and unconventional views of Cliff Barber, which included living outdoors, going barefoot, practising in nature, and cooking on an open fire, have also been one of the main influences in Andrew's understanding of yoga. And then there was Danny Paradise, who convinced Andrew to travel to India for the first time at the age of 18, opening Andrew's eyes to a new way of seeing the world. He stoked the fire of Andrew's strong nomadic tendencies: "I think through his guidance, perhaps more than anyone else, I came to see myself as a citizen of the world." Andrew also studied magic and enjoys diving into anything that seems to be impossible. He is well known as The Yogi Magician. He's the owner and director of Ashtanga Yoga Studio in Oklahoma, founded in 1999. If you ever wondered how gods are made, our guest today will tell you they start out as heroes. They become big enough to thrust out at Brad Pitt and decide the fate of thousands of women and children. Hector must have been like that… a giant like Priapus or Goliath standing in the way of Achilles. Probably a good sized lad. Maybe even 6 foot 4 and full of muscles. Our guest today is very much like this. She is larger than life and it makes sense that she married a Golden God like Derek Ireland and bore him two children. They used to make statues of people like them (think Venus de Milo). These two took a heroes journey that the rest of us just read about or gaze at in museums. Kristina Karitinou sits with us today and talks about her epic life story, including her true romance with Derek Ireland, nursing him through cancer, and her subsequent depression upon his death. The pain of this event along with their two small children, shaped the rest of her journey. Is there one of us in the Ashtanga Yoga culture more wrapped into the fabric of this legendary tapestry? Derek looms larger than life. He who practiced in Mysore, India wearing body, ankle, and wrist weights; he who ran up and down Chamundi Hill every morning like Lester Dent's “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze!” (Russell's wouldn't have been surprised at all to find Doc Savage practicing Ashtanga Yoga next to Derek and Kristina in a cave on the island of Crete, recovering from some epic adventure). The Ashtanga yoga practice is a method that brings the maximum beauty to both the male and female body. - Kristina Karitinou Kristina is an Ashtanga Yoga teacher and Zen practitioner from Athens, Greece, who's been teaching in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois since 1991. She was qualified as an Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher by her late husband Derek Ireland, authorized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and Certified by his son, Manju Pattabhi Jois in 2012. After many years of assisting Derek Ireland around the world, Kristina became one of the first Ashtanga yoga teachers in Europe. If you have sensitive ears around please use earphones! The beauty of this episode is that Greg loves to go a little meta! He enjoys questioning and looking at our Ashtanga yoga practice, culture, shared history, and all the accompanying assumptions from a slightly higher perspective, being self-reflective, rather than continuing to perpetuate unhealthy patterns and unhelpful belief systems. We're sure you will enjoy coming along this journey of inner exploration as we share our unique perspectives and the mixed bag of contradictory feelings that arise from being a member of a particular spiritual community— a post-guru community— trying to find its way through. Those of us who “grew up” in Mysore together, were like members of a family. We all made that same extreme (and somewhat obscure choice at the time) which compelled us to spend months upon months out of every year living in a small suburb of the southernmost city in Karnataka, India. In each idiosyncratic interview on the Finding Harmony Podcast we learn, as we do here with Greg, what was it for them that made a choice like this seem reasonable. From Wicca to Yoga you will hear about Greg's personal journey of self-discovery. We fearlessly dig into the darker, shadow side of the Ashtanga culture, including the allegations of sexual assault that came into the public eye against Sri K. Pattabhi Jois during the Me Too movement in 2017; as well as the perpetual “Fat Shaming” that somehow came to be viewed as normative behaviour within our community. These issues, for many of us, were either experienced firsthand or witnessed, and although we felt somewhat ill at ease with what we saw, heard, or experienced, we also firmly held to the belief that our Teacher(s) held our best interest at heart, were acting in a way to help us evolve spiritually, and any uneasiness we may have felt was simply our own misunderstanding. Ashtanga Yoga Worldwide will be starting an eight-month 300 Hour Teacher Training on June 1st, 2021. In addition to the usual philosophy, chanting, anatomy, and alignment principles, this training will have you examining models of presumed “correctness” or “incorrectness,” while deconstructing the assumptions we make around the practice itself, how it's taught, and it's methodology. You'll be encouraged to reflect on how we might change the implicit power dynamics within the student-teacher relationship, and the importance of holding space to create an atmosphere where students can safely explore the depths of their own consciousness. You'll learn how to debunk the idea of “injury versus opening,” and what it means to teach people to listen to their body, rather than continuing to perpetuate a disembodied practice. In this Keen on Yoga Podcast with Mary Taylor Freeman Adam discusses food and diet to support a yoga practice. Mary began studying yoga in 1971, soon after she came home from France with a grande diplôme from Julia Child’s cooking school, L’Ecole des Trois Gourmandes. She found yoga at first a means of finding equanimity during the stress of University, and it was that thread of balance that got her hooked. It was not until 1988 and finding her primary teacher, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and the Ashtanga Vinyasa system that she experienced the profound and transformative impact that a dedicated and daily practice can have on all aspects of life. She continues to study and practice yoga and Buddhist teachings with great enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, with an eye on how the residue that is produced on the mat (and cushion) through these teachings informs and supports all aspects of everyday life. Mary travels and teaches with Richard and also within the caregiver and hospital setting as part of the core faculty of the Being with Dying program (Upaya Zen Center) and the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Trainings. I In 1988 she co-founded with Richard the Yoga Workshop. Mary is also the author of three cookbooks and the co-author of What Are You Hungry For? Women Food and Spirituality (St. Martins Press) and The Art of Vinyasa (Shambhala Publications).
Dena Kingsberg has been studying and practicing traditional Ashtanga yoga for over 30 years. She is a devoted long-term student of the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and is among the most respected and senior practitioners and teachers in the world. Dena has a disciplined, yet lyrical style of teaching. Her holistic approach looks beyond external form to inspire a passion for self-discovery and reflection. She lives with her husband Jack, in the forest in the hinterland, beyond Byron Bay Australia in a stone and recycled timber home that they built with their own hands, over a few decades. Her ashtanga journey began at the age of 21 while she was spending from three to six months of each year in Mysore. Transformation through the practice was her primary focus. Dena went from primary to intermediate, then all of advanced A with Guruji adding asanas one by one of advanced B until it was completed. By this time she was the age of 33. Her practice took about 4 ½ hours. After 15 years practice she was blessed with the birth of her first child, Zoli and three years later followed by her brother Izac. Dena believes that the quality of breath relates to quality of life and that to breathe in leads to inspiration, creativity, illumination and awakening. And that the development of breath capacity and control not only enhances respiratory function but sits at the heart of emotional well being and spiritual connectivity. Chanting is another important element to Dena, one which she has cultivated as a means to connect with divinity beyond and within as a spiritual practice unto itself. Dena remains committed, deeply inspired and continuously amazed by the vast healing potential of Ashtanga as a life changing practice. She feels that yoga does not promise a life without hardship, sorrow, or pain, but it gives us tools to keep the mind steady through success and failure.
Practice a series of poses from the Ashtanga Primary and Intermediate Series in a way that is more accessible for the average yogi. Ashtanga Yoga is a form of yoga as made popular by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, as taught to him by his yoga teacher Sri T. Krishnamacharya. It is a strict vinyasa yoga practiced in a fixed sequence of poses, where movement, breath (ujjayi pranayama), locks (bandha), and steady gaze (drishti) lead the yogi consciously from pose to pose. The name comes from Maharishi Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, where the aspirant practices 8 limbs (or steps in a practice) of yoga for self-mastery. Vinyasa Yoga sequences, when practiced regularly (abhyasa), with dedication and non-attachment (vairagyabhyam) will lead the yogi through self-mastery (nirodah) - to a steady, calm, peaceful state of being that is free from afflictions. Namaste. (this is a challenging class, if you are a beginner, please practice a beginner class which you will find elsewhere in this series of podcasts) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bruceyogi/message
Every once in a while on this show we like to pull the blinds down (or the pull the curtain away) and show you what it really sounds like at the Chai Stand gossiping on Gokulum High Street in India. Tim Feldmann is hilarious (unfortunately for him not quite Jewish) and shares a very similar sense of humor to Russell. The two of them create their own little giggling world together and we are delighted to share this hour exploring Tim's life with you! Tim appears to be a Dane. He comes from a nice, boring, Danish town that is unpronounceable to North Americans (believe us, we tried!) and he is a shining an example of how good and wonderful a boy can grow up to be when raised with loving parents. Tim is full of charm, and unlike most of our guests, had a childhood free of trauma or other secondary causalities. He became a dancer as he loved movement and was an energetic child, who had a fabulous mother that encouraged him in every way. His father, despite being an engineer, was astonished that his son got paid to work as a dancer in Australia, and thus, supported his dream wholeheartedly. However, after a fall of some 6 stories down a mountainside cliff, Tim found himself finally having to change things up and discovered yoga as an avenue for self healing. You do sometimes have to hit rock bottom, and in Tim's case, that was quite literal. Tim found that Ashtanga Yoga was a unique and interesting form and pursued it with hungry passion every since his first introduction. He was set on the yoga path by his first teacher Lino Miele and was Authorized to teach directly by the founder of the Ashtanga Yoga Method, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and his grandson, R. Sharath Jois. Tim's humorous, straight forward yet profound teaching style makes him a cherished teacher in the Ashtanga yoga lineage, traveling extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. He also founded the Miami Life Center with his wife Kino MacGregor, which continues to expand to this day! For the New Year and for the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius that it seems we've now fully entered… We have done the impossible for you! We've nailed down the spinning melodic kites that are Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor. What is truly incredible about these two is their enormous sense of self-awareness to the fishbowl world in which we all live. They know themselves and they see you, seeing them, and within this awareness Love comes to light. They become (as one of Richard's books suggests) “The Mirror of Yoga.” It's deeply uncomfortable to be human and to know our own weaknesses; yet, they manage to emanate grace and compassion throughout the kaleidoscopic lens of their lives. And in turn it reflects back on ours… Because, sitting next to someone— ‘Upana' is how we learn. And we are able to raise our own vibration simply by being near these two souls. Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968, beginning with one simple sitting posture in the Zen tradition. He spent nine years in Asia studying yoga asana, Sufism, Sanskrit language, and Indian philosophical texts; contextualizing them within the turbulent political times of that period in history. In 1974 Richard began working with B.K.S. Iyengar, with whom he studied precise alignment principles, applying them to his own internally rooted experience of the forms. Drawing from this variety of contemplative traditions, and from Buddhism, in which he cultivates a deep interest, Richard teaches the Ashtanga Vinyasa method of yoga as taught by his principal teacher, the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India Mary tells us about developing an eating disorder during her time in College, which led her to embrace the culinary arts as a way of mastering the beast that is anorexia, through food itself. With both Richard and Mary we discus at length our Ashtanga Yoga culture and the pitfalls. We believe that you will find this hour with them as fascinating and engrossing as we did. Somehow time in their presence is never enough. He spent nine years in Asia studying yoga asana, Sufism, Sanskrit language, and Indian philosophical texts. In 1974 he began working with B.K.S. Iyengar, later stumbling upon the late Sri K. Anthony “Prem” Carlisi and Heather “Radha” Carlisi came together as a teaching team in Sri Lanka in 2007. Soon afterwards they taught through Northern Europe and realized that together their combined energies created an even more powerful synergy. Prem had begun writing his book “The Only Way Out is In” in 2006, and with Radha’s help he completed the project in 2007. In 2008, they decided to explore Bali and quickly discovered that Ubud was their new OM away from home. The Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute was born in Ubud in 2009. Prem and Radha both had the good fortune to study with Guruji personally for many years. They maintain the traditional system as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, their beloved Guruji who passed away in May 2009. Prem began learning from Guruji back in 1978. Radha’s Ashtanga journey began by studying with Chuck Miller in 1990 followed by her first trip to Mysore in 1995. They bring to their teaching the individualization that Krishnamacharya taught and passed to Guruji. Working in a personable way, they make the needs of each individual student a priority. Prem is considered a “Doctor of Ayurveda” from his teacher Dr.Vasant Lad and has maintained a deep connection to the practice of Ayurveda as a lifestyle. Radha also has a deep interest in Ayurveda, particularly in the area of food and nutrition. She has studied with Maya Tiwari and Amadea Morningstar and she credits Paul Pitchford , the author of Healing with Whole Foods, as being a big inspiration. She shares her love of Ayurvedic cooking on a regular basis with cooking classes and as nutritional guidance in consultations. You can find them on their website at www.ashtangayogabali.com
Join David Keil for a fascinating conversation about Yoga and Anatomy. In this episode we discuss anatomy in relation to the Ashtanga Yoga practice. David Keil was introduced to yoga in 1989 by his Tai Chi Chuan teacher. Both the Tai Chi and Yoga practice at the ripe age of 17 began his research into his own mind-body connections. His search continued through massage therapy where he discovered many insights and affirmations of what he had been exploring and finding on his own through his practices. As an instructor of Kinesiology (the study of movement and musculoskeletal anatomy) at Miami’s Educating Hands School of Massage from 1999-2003, David developed a fun, informal and informative style of teaching. David was introduced to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in 1999. But it was in 2001 that he met John Scott in Penzance, UK, presenting his anatomy workshops for the first time overseas. It was also John who told David to go to Mysore, India the following year, which he did. David arrived in Mysore in 2002 where he studied with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the “old” shala. In fact, it was the last year that the old shala was used for practice. David was authorized in 2004 and returned yearly for extended visits to Mysore with his wife Gretchen Suarez. They are both Authorized Level 2 and grateful for their time in Mysore, meeting Patabhi Jois and studying with R. Sharath, his grandson, over the years. All of David Keil's offerings are here - https://www.yoganatomy.com/yoga-anatomy-courses/His book, Functional Anatomy of Yoga is here- https://www.amazon.com/Functional-Anatomy-Yoga-Practitioners-Teachers/dp/1905367465/For those that want to learn their muscles visit - https://3dmusclelab.com/

From 1999 to 2003 David was an instructor of Kinesiology (the study of movement and musculoskeletal anatomy) at Miami’s Educating Hands School of Massage where he developed a fun, informal and informative style of teaching. In 1999 he was introduced to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. It was in 2001 whilst presenting his anatomy workshops for the first time overseas in Penzance, UK that he first met John Scott. Two weeks practicing with John was transformational and he realized that he had found his teacher. This began a relationship of both teacher/student as well as a collaborative colleague relationship that continues today. John advised David to go to Mysore, India the following year, which he did. Lucy began her interest in a more holistic approach to life working from 1990 as a massage therapist and aromatherapist in London. On her way to work one day she was intrigued to see a long line of people queuing down the road with yoga mats to get into an adjacent building. She joined them and this is how she began her study of Yoga with the hugely popular Derek Ireland and Radha Warrell visiting London to teach an Ashtanga workshop. Shortly after, Lucy travelled to Mysore, India to begin her studies with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. In 1995 Lucy received authorisation to teach. This was the same year she started a family with John Scott whom she met on her first trip to Mysore. Lucy was an instrumental contributor to the book Ashtanga Yoga with Lino Miele. Long before the internet, this was the first of its kind in recording the vinyasa count that so qualifies the practice. Lucy currently leads Ashtanga workshops in the UK and internationally. She is baed in Devon where she is a craniosacral tutor at the Karuna Institute. Years of experience in holistic boydwork and ashtanga yoga define Lucy's gentle and profound energy when teaching.

Aimee Echo began her career not as a Yoga teacher but a punk rock lead singer, recording several albums and touring the world with her band theSTART and performing guest vocals for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Garbage, Teddybears and so many more. Seeking refuge from some toxic elements in rock, she took her first step into an Ashtanga Yoga class in 1999. (As square as Russell is, he was very interested in Aimee's career and asked a lot of inappropriate questions about what actually is punk. What is Authentic? Is Miley Cyrus Punk? Does she regret marrying Billy Ray Cyrus' drummer? What is Bad Religion? And, is Yoga the answer?) Guided by teachers Noah Williams and Kiki Flynn, she developed a daily Mysore-style practice and became devoted to the Ashtanga Yoga method. After practicing with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his family in L.A. In 2002, she was inspired to make her first journey to Mysore, India in 2007 to study at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. Aimee is the owner, director and primary teacher at Ashtanga Yoga Long Beach. She is the only KPJAYI Authorized Ashtanga Yoga teacher in Long Beach, CA. She still sings in her dance rock band, theSTART. You can follow her on Instagram Aimee Echo and Ashtanga Yoga Long Beach. Sharmila Jois, granddaughter of Pattabhi Jois, is interviewed by Alexis, a shishya, in Mysore, Karnataka, India, on February 25, 2020. Sharmila graciously discusses growing up with her grandfather in a Shala, watching Westerners bring Yogasana from India; observing her grandfather adjusting people, learning to teach, and cultural differences in her community. Sharmila speaks about the lineage and titles around authorization, differences and obstacles in her family, and the values that a good teacher must embody. She speaks about the importance of supervision in teaching, and the importance of Yoga as a life path, not a quest to get a certificate or a cool yoga posture.Sharmila Jois is an Ashtanga teacher, sister of Sharath Jois, daughter and assistant of Saraswathi Jois, neice of Manju Jois, and granddaughter/assistant of deceased Sri K. I always wanted to be a writer. Kerouac, Hemmingway, and Carver were my heros. Later it was playwrights Kushner, Ibsen, and Chekov. I'd drag home backpacks full of books from the public library, and I finagled my way into just about every theater I could find in New York City from Broadway to deep Brooklyn fringe venues. If you met me at age 20, you'd never predict I'd be teaching backbends and low glycemic diets at age 40 - but here we are. Life is full of surprises. Sometimes the rug gets pulled out from under you; and sometimes, for no obvious reason, you simply shift gears and start driving another direction. In 2002, I discovered yoga and alternative health. I was a much better writer (even back then) than I was a yoga student, but it didn't matter. Passion is in short supply, so when you've got it, people want to be around you. By 2003, I was teaching and traveling; and by 2006, I founded the largest training school in South East Asia. What a change. Learning and teaching are among the most rewarding things in my life, and on this week's podcast, I'll share with you the “best of” list from what I've observed after training more than 4,000 yoga teachers in the past 13 years. Hopefully my journey has some lessons of value for you, whatever your profession. Listen & Learn: Why age, background, and athletic ability are NOT predictors of future teaching success How passion acts like magnet for opportunity The importance of a life and career plan Why you social circle matters just as much as your goals How speaking and teaching are meta skills Links & Resources: Yoga Teachers College (my school) Yoga Business Mastery Podcast About Lucas Rockwood: Lucas Rockwood is an internationally-renowned yoga trainer, TEDx Speaker, podcaster, writer, and entrepreneur. In this weeks episode we're trying something new by welcoming Lisa's first guest Sara Intonato. We dive into topics such as navigating perfectionism, anxiety and how she built a multiple 6 figure business in an industry that struggles to value itself. We also discussed how she's now taking her expertise and helping others own their value and create the lives they want for themselves. Connect with Sara on Instagram HERE Find her website HERE To apply for her business mentoring program contact her at Sara@sarayoga.com Sara Intonato (Level 2 Authorized Ashtanga Yoga Teacher) committed to a daily yoga practice in 2001 as a means of coping with debilitating anxiety attacks. Just 20 years old, yoga provided Sara with the tools to manage her anxiety attacks and a renewed sense of clarity in her life. By the time Sara graduated from Boston University in 2003, she had already completed her 200 hour teacher training and begun focusing her studies in the Ashtanga Yoga method. Instead of working on Wall Street or applying to law school, the recent college graduate embarked on the journey of entrepreneurship and began freelance work as a yoga teacher. In 2005, Sara made her first trip to Mysore, India to study under Guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and deepen her connection to the Ashtanga Yoga lineage. That same year, Sara led her first ever yoga retreat in Montauk, New York. Incredibly inspired by her trip to India, Sara committed to living her passion of helping others heal through yoga in a variety of settings. Over the last 15 years, Sara has transitioned her business model tremendously and now hosts four sold out retreats per year, at local and international venues. She was the consulting director of the Mysore style Ashtanga Yoga program at Absolute Yoga in Woodbury, which was the only traditional Ashtanga program in Nassau county. She now teaches one on one private lessons and never hesitates to work with someone who is faced with serious limitations. After noticing a greater need for spiritual tools to be used off the mat, Sara created two online yoga philosophy courses, using recorded and live content, which allow students to bring yoga off the mat and into their lives 24/7. Sara shows her students that yoga can heal anyone, so long as he or she is willing to do the work with commitment. While many yoga teachers find the entrepreneurial journey intimidating, Sara embraces it as her zone of genius. Teaching yoga is her gift, and growing her own business continues to be part of her spiritual journey. The most crucial part of this journey is to be a perpetual student. Sara continues to make annual trips to India and study at KPJAYI in Mysore, and was awarded with her authorization in 2013. She is honored to preserve the lineage of Ashtanga Yoga with authenticity. As a mother of two young children, one of whom has special needs, Sara is a passionate advocate for empowering those in challenging life circumstances with the ancient wisdom of yoga.

Back in 2002, when I couldn't make it to a studio, I would play an old cassette tape and practice to that in my bedroom, hotel room, or even outdoors wherever I was. At-home practice has always been part of my yoga experience, but I'm the type of introvert that gets energy and inspiration from being alone. I'm naturally driven, and I'm harder on myself than any teacher has ever been; so when people asked me how to develop an at-home practice, I always struggled to answer until recently when I've compiled my thoughts and observations. Over the years, I've learned some very specific things from my students that make at-home practice success more probable, and I'll share them all with you on this week's Yoga Talk Show. ------------ Listen & Learn: Why practicing in an old, ragged t-shirt might be hurting your motivation Why the advice to “just do what feels good” is a flawed approach How to setup a home practice room How to keep your practicing going on the road Audio/video classes: do they work? The world is getting fat at an alarming rate. Two in three adults are overweight or obese, and excess weight is correlated with every degenerative illness across the board. While some overweight people are in perfect health, it's rare and often fleeting as the downward spiral is very predictable—and it happens fast. Here's what you need to understand about the global weight problem. It's not about lack of willpower or discipline, that's an ignorant and uninformed excuse. It's not about lack of exercise, though sedentary lives certainly don't help and movement is always a good thing. The real problem is imbalance: emotional, hormonal, and nutritional. We in a time when stress levels are through the roof, social support systems have crumbled, and most of the food available is various forms of lifeless carbohydrates. So what do you do? How do you find balance in an imbalanced world? Paul Dallaghan, founder of Centered Yoga at Samhita Retreat Center in Koh Samui, Thailand www.samahitaretreat.com Paul Dallaghan formally established Centered Yoga in New York City in 1999, and soon thereafter began the first training course. Although the course was born out of a direct request from students, at the time Paul had also been thinking about how to raise the standards of yoga education. He felt a need to offer teaching that would preserve the integrity of traditional yogic practices while also carefully examining and understanding their origins and meaning. Since the very beginning of Centered Yoga, Sri O.P. Tiwari (head of the Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute near Bombay) has been its main advisor, principally owing to his longstanding relationship with Paul. As such, Centered Yoga enjoys full affiliation with Kaivalyadhama, a highly regarded research facility dedicated to examining yoga practices from both scientific and traditional points of view. Established by Swami Kuvalayananda in 1924, Kaivalyadhama has had tremendous influence on the understanding and propagation of yoga in India and throughout the world. Indeed, both Gandhi and Nehru were students of Swamiji; Swami Sivananda dedicated the first issue of every book to Kuvalayananda; and Krishnamacharya studied there in 1933, sent by the Maharaja of Mysore. Sri O.P. Tiwari is Swamiji’s key disciple. To Tiwari he left the institute, as well as valuable personal teachings, particularly in the field of Pranayama. Tiwariji is thus one of the most authoritative sources on Pranayama today. He is an experienced, extremely knowledgeable master who stays true to the traditions of yoga, preserving its integrity so that students, present and future, can benefit fully. This lineage, or parampara, is the force behind the teachings, as well as what drives all the courses of Centered Yoga. Eighty years of painstaking research into different aspects of yoga is hard to equal in the modern world. As one of three senior students of Tiwariji, Paul is committed to continuing the legacy through personal practice and a genuine approach to living yoga daily. He has spent years learning and practicing the full Pranayama to an advanced level under Tiwariji, has sat beside him to learn how to read pulse specifically for Pranayama, and has studied closely what goes on in its practice. Paul has also spent many years with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, becoming one of a few students worldwide to be certified by him. His advanced Asana and vinyasa practice combined with a deeper insight born of a solid Pranayama practice enable Paul to better guide students through key concepts involving the body and breath. Centered Yoga has since grown to become a leader in the field of yoga education, offering thorough and professional courses since its founding. Paul moved to Thailand toward the end of 2001 and resumed teaching the training courses the following year. Out of this sprouted Samahita Retreat-the venue for yoga retreats, training courses, and, most recently, wellness programs. Over the years Centered Yoga has helped train over seven hundred students, many of whom have gone on to teach. For all, even those who decide not to teach, the training programs are a time for deep practice and growth in the understanding of yoga. Many esteemed teachers have also come to share their knowledge; among them Tiwariji, who continues to be Centered Yoga’s primary teacher and yoga master. He believes in the programs and recognizes the need for an advanced level of training, practice, and learning by students, especially those that go on to teach others. Others include Richard Freeman, Prof Jayashree, Prof Nagaraja Rao and other anatomical and ayurvedic specialists. Centered Yoga makes its home in Samahita Retreat-a center established specifically for practicing yoga and learning healthy and positive living habits. This in itself is a unique advantage. Samahita Retreat provides an ideal environment in which to learn, experience, and practice the lessons imparted in our courses. Few such places exist in the modern world. The fact that Centered Yoga is one of the first schools to become a member of Yoga Alliance is attractive to many students, especially those who use its courses as a platform from which to teach. Centered Yoga offers 200- and 500-hour-level qualifications; furthermore, it has its own qualification level, Distinguished Advanced-Level Teacher, which a student reaches after 1100 hours. Centered Yoga’s purpose is not to churn out teachers but to guide, inspire, and uplift students of yoga. Sincerity is therefore a primary qualification, the inner quality that allows a student to approach his or her personal development and the practices in an earnest and mature way.
It was Christmas 2001. I was 23 years old, and I woke up in the back of ambulance after convulsing in a grand mal seizure in front of my parents. I'd managed to wobble through the previous 3 years in steady haze of drug and alcohol abuse, chronic sleep deprivation, and borderline mania, but that holiday season, I bottomed out. There was no more hiding the truth from myself. I was in trouble. I wish I could say that I've always loved yoga, health and wellness—but that's not my story. I took my first swig of gin straight from the bottle at age 13, and I loved it right away. No learning curve. I was never drawn to lotus position or meditation halls in those days. Early in my life, I was obsessed with escaping the overwhelming anxiety and restlessness of my own brain. My yoga story is one of running away from pain, of channeling negative obsessions into positive ones, and finding a toolkit that made me feel well, every time. I turn 40 this year, and as strange as it sounds, I'd never shared my story in its entirety with anyone because it continues to be a deep source of shame for me. With few exceptions, shame is a pretty useless feeling, so I'd like to share my story with you on this week's Yoga Talk Show. My hope is that if you're at a crossroads or a crisis point now, you can perhaps connect with my "rock bottom" story and begin to find your North Star as I did. ------------ ABOUT OUR GUEST Lucas Rockwood is a yoga teacher trainer, digital nomad, green food junkie, and serial entrepreneur. For episode 7, we dive deep into Mysore style Astanga Yoga with Danielle DePompei, an instructor at Astanga Yoga Columbus. Danielle has such awesome energy and a cool story about how she found Astanga Yoga and made it to Columbus. I feel quite honored to explore her story and what insights she's uncovering from her own journey. Personally, I have practiced this form of yoga for over 10 years (although, as a disclaimer, typically once a week... not as regularly as I'd like...). Astanga Vinyasa yoga is itself a common base from many modern forms of yoga: vinyasa is about linking your body's movement with the breath. Astanga is the name of the yoga, as brought to the western world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois — a set of certain postures to improve circulation, develop a strong body and a calm mind. What sets Mysore style apart is a philosophy of independence. (It's named after the place in India where it is taught.) You learn your own practice, posture by posture. While there are led classes to reinforce the series, most classes involve you showing up when you show up and start your practice on your own. Teachers are there to guide you with adjustments, and new postures only as you are ready for them. The room is usually quiet (except for maybe the thoughts in your head), and your practice fits your pace and abilities. Enjoy! I am very excited today to be talking with Daniel, the pump. A [00:00:23] Danielle: nice yes. [00:00:24] Adam: Who teaches yoga up at the Steiger yoga Columbus. Up on Indianola [00:00:31] Danielle: and Morris road. [00:00:32] Yes. Cool. [00:00:33] Adam: So welcome. And I'd just like to start off maybe asking you how you got into yoga, like how did your yoga journey start? [00:00:42] Danielle: Yeah, well, it started years ago and it was like 2008 and I was living with a friend and, well, for years, for like 15 years, I was a competitive figure skater. And when I moved to Columbus, I came to go to hair school, actually become like a cosmetologist. [00:01:02] And the girl that I was living with at the time that I moved in with who's now, like my, one of my closest friends, she was like, you should really try yoga. Like she had been going with like her mom or whatever, cause I haven't stopped sort of skating. I just like couldn't like find the time to get to a rank. [00:01:19] And she was like, you should try this yoga thing. So I was like, yeah. I dunno, I tend to like resist most things that people tell me to do. And so, which I'm getting better at, but not doing. But yeah, so I went to a yoga class and then I just like, I, I mean, I loved everything about it. Like I just, I really honestly, I liked the way that it made me feel and there was like a lot of connection in the like creative sort of movement and expression that I also found in skating. [00:01:46] But to be honest with like a lot less of the pressure of like the competitive, like figure skating world. Sort of [00:01:52] Adam: thing getting very competitive. [00:01:54] Danielle: It could be. Yeah. I think it definitely could be, at least for me, it started to like become less of fun and more about like always training through these life competitions. [00:02:06] So over time it sort of lost, its like I sort of lost the joy in it cause it was just like training to get somewhere, you know? And I didn't really kind of. I wasn't into that anymore. That aspect of it. Yeah. And then when I moved, it's just became like really expensive to be honest, to do the competing and coaching and all of that. [00:02:25] So, so anyway, so I got into yoga and just sort of like started dabbling in it for years, just like random classes. I would do it at home. In that time I was doing hair too, so I had like a full time job.

Sharath Jois. Grandson of the legendary Sri K. Pattabhi Jois ... son of Saraswathi Jois ... director of the KPJAY Institute ... and the current holder of our lineage. And yet, if there's one thing I have learned as his student it's this: Sharath would not want this podcast to be about him. It's about the yoga. For Sharath, it's always about the yoga. "Yoga is the superstar. Not me." But he is pretty special. And about as generous, wise, devoted, and kind as ever a teacher should be. Or rather, a Guru. Because Sharath is much, much more than just a teacher. He's truly a living example of what this yoga means. ****** Finally, a thank you to all of you who are supporting our show through Patreon. When Chris in Oklahoma asks about the importance of deep study with one teacher, Kino MacGregor reaches into her own experiences studying for many years with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, India. Kino shares with host Zubin Shroff how her travels to India were interspersed with periods of solitary practice, where she began to understand how deeply we can let the work of yoga integrate in terms of our own spiritual practice. She describes how she sees the yoga path as an individual journey, which is at once very intense and very solitary, and that while a teacher’s role can be to help build the roots of yoga, the roots are ours alone. Finally, Kino shares some of her earliest experiences with Guruji, and the support and sincerity she found that allowed her to grow stronger.
Eddie has been teaching yoga in New York City since 1989, and since 1993 has run the NYC branch of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois's Ashtanga Yoga Institute. Now located in Brooklyn, the school also functions as a consecrated Hindu temple. He is also involved in bringing health and wellness programs to under-served and in-need communities based on yoga, stress reduction, mindfulness and relaxation, and has designed protocols for scientific studies on yoga. We spoke about his personal path, his guru, his work and his perspective on the current yoga scene.
Christine Hoar, a woman with nearly 20 years of practice and teaching experience, is a direct student of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (Guruji). Though for years, he referred to her affectionately as “Nancy’s (Gilgoff) student,” her teacher to this day. Now, if you’re a woman in this practice, I don’t need to tell you how rare it is to find women with that kind of depth and experience in the practice.
