Thematically, what inspired the blend of comedic and horror elements in this story, and how do these genres enhance the narrative?We've had Pornsak on, Michael Walsh, and each time I'm curious, how did you guys get in on this exciting project of one-shots?How was your collaboration with Pornsak?The Horizon Experiment introduces complex characters dealing with extraordinary circumstances—how did you approach balancing humanity with the monstrous elements of the plot?Can you share your creative process for developing the visual tone of the comic, and how the artwork complements the story's darker, chaotic themes?The concept of 'monsters' often carries deeper metaphorical weight—what underlying social or personal themes did you aim to explore through this one-shot?Take us through your collaborative process? For instance, what do the action beats look like in a script vs the page?Michael, a lot of the art has an almost fish-eye lens, what was your goal in that approach?Were there any monsters or villains you didn't get to put in here that you've got sketched out?J, you probably get this all the time, but with a few comics series now under your belt, do you approach writing comics differently than with TV?How far out have you planned future chapters?What comics are you currently reading?

It's easy to claim your comic as "Evil Dead for Blerds," but accomplishing the cheeky elevator pitch is far more complex. Writer J. Holtham and artist Michael Lee Harris grab their inspiration from the iconic Sam Raimi splatstick horror franchise but do so in service of an entirely different purpose. Motherfu*kin Monsters rages with a political fire, throwing their protagonist into a university setting shrouded with white faces. Their JJ eagerly wants to find his place within this system, while his family stands skeptical, waiting for it to reveal a devilish intent. Of course, JJ's kin thought metaphorically, not the literal ghouls that quickly hunger for their flesh. Our conversation with J. Holtham and Michael Lee Harris begins with their love of Evil Dead, or Evil Dead II, more specifically. We start by exploring what the film does so well, for what reason, and why they were compelled to plant their mission atop it. Motherfu*kin Monsters is one helluva ride, filled with chills and thrills, but from page one, the comic also makes its anger known. J. Holtham and Michael Lee Harris, like all The Horizon Experiment stories, speak to the moment. Our hope is everyone reading is listening to what's on the page. In addition, our discussion addresses the economic realities of comics-making and comics-shopping in 2024. The Horizon Experiment's pilot system still raises eyebrows in comic shops, but by embracing experimentation, the series removes one of the veils between creator and consumer. Honesty is the best policy, and we need to buy the comics we want to see in the world. It's cold, hard math...er, capitalism. I'm joined by two newcomers on the podcast today, J. Holtham (Night Thrasher, Bishop: War College) and Michael Lee Harris (Berlin 1945, Black Hitler), to talk about their new one shot project Motherfucking Monsters from Image Comics. Jace welcomes wrtier J.Holtham and cartoonist Micheal Lee Harris to the show to talk about their entry into the Horizon Experiment, Motherf*cking Monsters. The Horizon Experiement is a storytelling intiative that takes a familiar genre or storytelling trope and flips it on its head by swapping in diverse characters and ideas that fundementally change how the story unfolds. In this case, it is Evil Dead, but taking place at a college where a young black student is doing his best to fit in. J uses this setting to great effect bringing in ideas of black culture and relevent themes of race and self-identity. When you add in the kinetic art of Michael Lee, you have book that is full of energy and fun. Learn all about the series from the co-creators and pick it up when it hits comic shops.

I'm always excited about getting to talk to comics creators about their projects but today I'm ecstatic. Not only do I get returning guest Pornsak Pichetshote back on the show, who is one of the nicest people in the medium, but it's a double treat to get to introduce artist Terry Dodson on as well. They have an amazing project dropping soon called the Horizon Experiment: The Manchurian with Image Comics. This will be the opening salvo of a series of five one shot projects, designed as something akin to a tv pilot, each featuring original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons. Pornsak is co-editing the series with industry veteran Will Dennis (check out my interview with Will here) and the plan is to host all of them on the show if calendars and lives cooperate over the next five months before their release to give you a rounded flavor profile of all the cool eccentricity the Horizon Experiment has to offer. This book is fantastic. I love a big swing and often lament creators not having the opportunity to take them. Pornsak has not only crafted a great story here, but he's also providing the platform for other creators to take their own swings as well with the other Horizon Experiment books dropping soon. Originally a playwright, J. moved to Los Angeles in the early 20-teens to pursue screenwriting, eventually landing a staff writer position on the show Pitch. Since then, he's written for Cloak and Dagger, Jessica Jones, Supergirl and The Handmaid's Tale. As a comics writer, the final issue of J.'s first miniseries Bishop: War College just dropped, and it is delightful!
