Zephaniah 3:14-20; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 7:18-28 The American folk song “I Wonder as I Wander” captures the Advent question asked by John the Baptist's messengers in today's Holy Gospel. “Are You the one,” they wondered, “or shall we look for another?” We live in a wandering world, constantly looking, seeking, and yearning for that one thing, that one idea, that one person, that one amount of money that unlocks the way to a life of flourishing. We ourselves, wandering as we sometimes do, at times have put our trust in people or things that cannot deliver what only Jesus can. Today we rejoice that amidst our wonderings and wanderings, Jesus is the one. He is the one by whom the blind saw, the lame walked, lepers were cleansed, demon-possessed people were freed, and the dead were raised. Jesus is the one who will restore all creation to its original perfection and who, when He comes again in glory, will restore all things forever.
The song "I Wonder as I Wander" has a fascinating history... but is it too good to be true? Is it possible to recover a sense of wonder in a disenchanted world?

As Christmas approaches, Soul Music leads you through Advent with the Appalachian carol "I Wonder as I Wander". Written by American folklorist and singer John Jacob Niles, its origins come from a song fragment collected in 1933. Mysterious, inspiring, this traditional Christmas carol reflects on the nativity and the nature of wondering. While in the town of Murphy in Appalachian North Carolina, Niles attended a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police. He wrote of hearing the song: “A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievably dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins. ... she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song”. The girl, named Annie Morgan, repeated the fragment seven times in exchange for a quarter per performance, and Niles left with "three lines of verse, and a magnificent idea". Based on this fragment, Niles composed the version of "I Wonder as I Wander" that is known today. This most unusual of carols touches people in different ways. With childhood memories from a 1960s RAF base in Oxfordshire, a Nigerian schoolgirl who found her place in Winchester Cathedral, reflections from a candlelit vigil in an Appalachian town, and a Christmas gift as described by world renowned singer Melanie Marshall. Guests: Performer Melanie Marshall, Ron Pen (biographer John Jacob Niles), Viva Choir member Louise Sheaves, author Chibundu Onuzo and music scholar John McClain. Featuring music from John Rutter and Burl Ives. Consultant: Ted Olson. Producer: Nicola Humphries

Have you heard the Christmas song “I Wonder as I Wander”? Listen to Kendra explain the history and theology of the song, then give it a listen!
Songs for Advent: I Wonder as I Wander | 12.6.20 Text: Isaiah 9:6-7 Three Truths that Lead us to Wonder We should wonder at the depth of our own sinfulness. We should wonder at the extent of God's reach to save. We should wonder at the glories that are to come.
Shepherds and Angels are forever a part of the Christmas story. But why? And what things can we learn from them? In this exploration of a different angle on the Nativity story we ask a lot of questions. The idea is not to cast doubt. It is to celebrate clear facts — surprising things about the shepherds and angels that you may not know. In this merry episode we discuss the part that shepherds in particular played in the story. They were a curious choice for being key witnesses to the most heralded event in human history. Scholars do not agree about who they exactly were and what they may have known before that night of angelic manifestation. But there is a lesson to be learned by what they saw and how they reacted to it. Angels too are an interesting element of the Christmas story. For many people, angels are a fact of everyday life. Why are there angels? What is their purpose? Why did so many involved in the story of Christmas see angels? This is a celebration as well of beautiful Christmas music, including: This Holy Night — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds7aH69y29I by Broken Bow Music | Amazon I Wonder as I Wander — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1hMgD613Lo Tabernacle Choir God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCoy7URHuY4 Madilyn Paige & Her Sisters Angels from the Realms of Glory — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrLoWt2tfqg The Piano Guys & Cast of Thousands
The Hastings College Choir performs I Wonder as I Wander.
This sermon was recorded at a special "Christmas in the Spring" service where we marked God's entrance into "The Story" with chapter 22. The mission of Jesus includes adopting us into His family and that gives us something to celebrate! Going with the "Christmas" theme, C2W (Created 2 Worship) offers the instrumental "I Wonder as I Wander."

We’re back! Love is in the air as Craig gazes seductively into the eyes of the first two Twilight Zone episodes he ever saw (“The Chaser” and “Jess-Belle”). Along the way he completely undermines his own efforts to be more “woke” when it comes to lusting after the opposite sex… just in time for Valentine’s Day (which was two weeks ago, so our perfect record of always being late remains intact). It’s a heady brew of Paley Center complaints, surprising Psycho tangents, and more cast connections than you can shake a silver hairpin at. Draw a warm bath, light some candles, and crack open the Courvoisier. Ooh la la! Michael Berkeley talks to author Chibundu Onuzo about the challenge of writing novels while studying for her A-levels, and the role of music and faith in her life. At the age of nineteen Chibundu became the youngest female writer ever to be signed by Faber and Faber. She started writing aged ten while growing up in Lagos, Nigeria and was working on her first novel, ‘The Spider King’s Daughter’, while doing her A levels at boarding school in England. It was published while she was still at university and was shortlisted for a host of prizes – winning a 2013 Betty Trask Award. Her second novel, ‘Welcome to Lagos’, was published in 2017 to great acclaim. Chibundu talks to Michael Berkeley about growing up in Lagos, and the challenge of adapting to life at boarding school in Britain. She chooses a carol, ‘I Wonder as I Wander’, that she sang with her school choir in Winchester Cathedral. The soundtrack to a Nigerian television advert from the 1990s speaks to her about the tensions between Western and traditional values in Nigeria. We hear a miniature by Christian Petzold that will be familiar to anyone who has ever learned the piano, alongside music from Handel and from Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, ‘From the New World’. And, in a special moment for Private Passions, Chibundu is joined in the studio by members of her family to sing a setting of Psalm 23 by her uncle, Bishop Ken Okeke. Produced by Jane Greenwood. A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

Georgia Stewart McDade, a Louisiana native who has lived in Seattle more than half her life, loves reading and writing. As a youngster she wrote and produced plays for her siblings and neighbors and collaborated with church youth to write plays for special occasions. Earning a Bachelor of Arts from Southern University, Master of Arts from Atlanta University, and Ph. D. from University of Washington, the English major spent more than thirty years teaching at Tacoma Community College but also found time to teach at Seattle University, the University of Washington, Lakeside School, Renton Technical College, and Zion Preparatory Academy. As a charter member of the African-American Writers' Alliance (AAWA), McDade began reading her stories in public in 1991. She credits AAWA with making her regularly write poetry. For a number of years she has written poems inspired by art at such sites as Gallery 110, Seattle Art Museum, and Columbia City Gallery. She wrote for Pacific Newspapers, especially the South District Journal. Convinced all of us can learn to write well, McDade conducts and participates in a variety of writing workshops. “Good writing can force us to think and think critically; we can theorize, organize, analyze, and synthesize better,” says she. A prolific writer, she has works in AAWA anthologies I Wonder as I Wander, Gifted Voices, Words? Words! Words, and Threads. Her works include Travel Tips for Dream Trips, questions and answers about her six-month, solo trip around the world; Outside the Cave, a collection of poetry; and numerous essays, stories, and poems. This year a second collection of poems and a collection of stories and essays will be published. She volunteers at community radio station KBCS (91.3 FM) and Boys and Girls Club. Hello and welcome to episode twenty-one of Prose. This week, work to see an invisible man, attempt to avoid unavoidable lust, be over-dramatic with a poet, and enjoy a brief history lesson. This week's episode is quite a bit different than your average episode of Prose. The first three parts of the episode are long form poetry with a dash of narrative thrown in for good measure, and the final portion of the episode is a preview of a bit of an Easter special that will be released on Easter Day next week. So, yes, it's a deviation from our norm, and, yes, I'm hoping you'll be up for the ride. If you are enjoying the show, its deviations, and/or anything in between, or even if you are not, please to feel free to contact me through prosepodcast@gmail.com with anything you might want to say, be it praise, critique, advice, or simply saying hello. You can also keep up with or communicate with the podcast by following Prose on Twitter through @prosepodcast or on Facebook under the same handle, though Twitter is the far more active of the two. Lastly, it would not be an introduction if I did not tell you to head over to iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, or the podcast-catcher of your choice and leave a rating and/or review for Prose. Let's see some reviews and ratings come rolling in. Thank you for taking the time to listen to Prose. Let's get to the pieces, shall we? This week, we have “A Response,” “du Lac,” “I Wander,” and the Easter Loves History Preview: St. Ambrose and the Neo-Assyrian Empire.
We continue to prepare for Christmas at Bethany Lutheran Church as Santa makes an appearance at the beginning of this podcast. After that, we have more ADVENTure in Alexandria, the 2014 Sunday School service, an introduction to Jesus in the Gospel of John and a solo voice singing "I Wonder as I Wander."
