Secular scientists tell us that the ice cores show tens of thousands of years of Earth's history. But they can't know this because, well, they weren't there.
The discovery of ice cores raises significant questions about Earth’s history and the accuracy of long-age interpretations. Are these frozen layers evidence of hundreds of thousands of years, or is there another explanation? The conventional dating of ice cores relies on assumptions about slow accumulation rates and orbital cycles, but what if those assumptions are flawed? Dr. Tas Walker explains how rapid ice buildup—consistent with the aftermath of Noah’s Flood—better fits the evidence. He challenges listeners to rethink what they’ve been told and explore a perspective that aligns with both science and the biblical account. ✍️ Links and Show Notes Ice cores vs the Flood The current state of creationist ice core research Tephra and inflated ice core ages Greenland ice cores: implicit evidence for catastrophic deposition

In this episode of South Pole, host Clark Marchese dives into the science of paleoclimatology and the fascinating world of ice cores with Dr. Tas van Ommen, an Antarctic climate scientist from the University of Tasmania. Ice cores, described as time capsules, contain some of the oldest Earth system records, revealing invaluable data about past climate conditions, atmospheric composition, and even ancient air trapped within tiny bubbles. Together, Clark and Dr. van Ommen explore how ice cores can help us understand natural climate cycles, inform climate models, and shape current environmental policies, such as drought management in Australia. This episode sheds light on how Antarctic research contributes to our understanding of climate change and highlights the urgency of climate action.Episode Guest: Dr. Tas van OmmenFind more on Dr. van Ommen here.Follow Dr. van Ommen on XFind Dr. van Ommen's publications here. The ice cores need to be interpreted, and our starting point determines how we interpret the evidence.
Paul Garner and Paul Larson talk about scientific evidence supporting the view that the earth is only thousands of years old.
A young earth perspective on the question of ice age(s) and ice cores.
There is a glacier that sits a kilometer below the highest peak within B.C.'s border, called Combatant Col. Scientists have been working on its icy surface to pull out ice cores as quickly as they can. Locked within these smooth cylinders are clues about what the region's climate was like years ago that could help us understand today's climate challenges.Justine Hunter is a Globe reporter based in B.C. and she explains how researchers get these precious time capsules off the top of the mountain and what scientific secrets they are looking for once the cores are safely stored in a very cold lab in Edmonton, Alta..Questions? 110 is a long episode. It's the weekend- why not. Two stories from Germany- Leopard 2 Tanks vs South Korean K2 Tanks (in European market); and the procurement of PzH2000 155mm artillery systems. And two stories from the UK- New Army Cap Badges (in honor of King Charles) and robotic combat vehicle testing. We also have our usual US defense items- JLTV production; BAE plant in York, PA does some rearranging to meet AMPV & ACV production needs; and finally a decision on the latest San Antonio Class Amphibious ship. Somewhere in there- we have some cool stories from Canada (ASW Exercise in Guam); Japan (c UAS system prototypes); and Australia (RAAF moving 1 million year old ice core samples from Antarctica to Tasmania). Is that incredible or what?
Can fertilizer be sustainably made without fossil fuels? How have volcanos changed our atmosphere? We look at two recent studies about emissions today and throughout the past.
Although the giant ice sheets that cover Antarctica formed by 14 million years ago, constant movement and replacement of this ice means that none of it today is older than about 1 million years. Air bubbles trapped in this ice when it formed provide a record of our atmosphere in the past. In this episode, I describe how ice cores can retrieve important paleoclimatic data on earth's history over the past 800,000 years. This record reveals cycles of climate change and the role of greenhouse gases in determining ice ages and interglacial periods over millennia. The origin and importance of ozone in our atmosphere also is discussed and how the ozone 'hole' formed over Antarctica.
Articles on climate change will often talk about carbon dioxide levels being higher than they've been in thousands, or even millions, of years. You may also hear things about temperature moving in cycles, or about how different the climate of a certain area used to be. But how do scientists know all of this information before we started taking measurements? That's where proxy data comes in. On this episode, we discuss a few different types of proxy data, learn some new words, and find out just what crystalized rat urine can tell us about climate. Today on Living Planet, we're traveling to some cold (and not-so-cold) places. We're asking how Europe's snow-starved winters are affecting winter sport enthusiasts. We visit a French supermarket that's keeping things especially chilly. And we head to the lab to find out how climate scientists study the world's oldest ice.
RC is still feeling the effects of the Halloween shiny, reflective Foil Brother, so he discovers the differences between tin and aluminum. With clarity returned and napping mastered, he reviews the factors behind the phenomenon of the Urban Heat Island Effect, and relates how charts of heat waves in the US can be deceptive by manipulating data and wording descriptions that leave the actual point of the graphs unclear. Other more direct graphs blatantly show how comparably low current concentrations of CO2 are and how global temperatures were much higher than they have been the last five million years during the onset and cycling of ice ages. What is proposed as the optimum temperature that we should be striving toward? And what is being proposed as solutions to manage that temperature, that may leave us hamstrung in the face of natural climate change? This week, we're continuing our month of science at the extremes, by looking at extreme cold. Including expeditions to the poles, what happens at absolute zero, and the animals that can survive temperatures we never could. Plus, in the news, the massive death risk from climate change, a prize for mapping the sea bed, and a new piece of the puzzle in the story of human migration... Like this podcast? Why does Earth’s age matter? Are there better answers to the controversial methods of radioisotope dating? Is an ice core’s age simply determined by counting its layers? Brian Thomas explains why Christians need an educated response to the evolutionary stories of many geologists and media celebrities. More...
Secular scientists have drilled into the thick ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica and extracted cores that run thousands of meters deep. These scientists claim that the deepest layers are hundreds of thousands of years old. Do these ice cores really prove an old earth? More...

The ALMA telescope array in the Atacama Desert is one of the most sensitive earth based telescopes. It has now captured images of the very first galaxies. Adam talks to Dr Mark Swinbank of Durham University who's part of the team who've unleashed data this week from that universal hinterland that's set to fill in the missing gaps in our understanding of the evolution of the universe. The European Parliament voted this week to place a moratorium on new licences for member states to frack for shale gas until proven safe for the environment. But how dangerous is fracking? A set of articles out this week in the journal Seismological Research Letters attempts to address and dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about fracking, and to get to the root of the very real, increasing frequency of seismic activity. US Geologist Justin Rubinstein and University of Strathclyde geologist Zoe Shipton discuss the evidence As global temperatures increase Ice Core scientists searching for clues to Earth's past climatic history face a ticking clock to gather enough core samples before they melt. Only a tiny amount of mountain glacial ice has ever been collected and studied, and in 2016 ice cores from the Alps will be moved to safer storage in Nature's freezer - a giant vault in Antarctica. Marnie Chesterton meets Ice Core researchers from British Antarctic Survey to find out why they need this archive. A new paper shows the first recorded instances of alcohol drinking in wild chimpanzees. Tanya Humle from the University of Kent describes the novel behaviour. With anthropologist Professor Catherine Hill, Dr Humle discusses whether "wild" chimp research is even possible in an age when human and chimp habitats overlap. Producer Adrian Washbourne.
Physics Colloquium 14th November 2014 delivered by Prof Eric Wolff The polar ice sheets hold one of Earth's great sedimentary records. By drilling ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica, we can obtain ice that fell as snow, extending back so far 800,000 years in Antarctica and over 125,000 years in Greenland. Ice cores contain information about climate and numerous other environmental parameters; crucially the air bubbles trapped in the ice give access to the past composition of the atmosphere, including the greenhouse gas concentrations. In this talk I will first discuss the strengths and weaknesses of ice cores, and then demonstrate how ice cores are collected. I will then present a few examples of the knowledge we have gained from ice cores – about greenhouse gases, about glacial/interglacial cycles, and about rapid climate changes most likely induced by changes in ocean heat transport. I will present an example of how we are trying to use ice cores to reconstruct the past extent of sea ice, a critical component of climate feedbacks. Finally I will discuss prospects for obtaining even older ice in the future.
