There's a famous black-and-white photograph of a train bursting through the side of a building and falling onto the pavement below. It was taken in 1895 — and Emma Donoghue's latest novel, The Paris Express, reimagines the story behind that moment. In her retelling, the Irish Canadian writer fills the train with her own vibrant characters. From wealthy politicians to young anarchists, she dives into the complexities of the time as the train races toward its demise. If you enjoyed this conversation, check out these episodes:Jack Wang: Reimagining the lost stories of Chinese Canadians during WWII Paula Hawkins: Exploring the dark side of the art world in new thriller The Blue Hour

Welcome back, Weirdos to another spine-tingling episode of History for Weirdos! This week, we're unraveling the baffling case of Grace Marks, a young Irish-Canadian maid who found herself entangled in a gruesome double homicide that shocked 19th-century Canada. In 1843, Upper Canada was rocked by the brutal murders of Thomas Kinnear, a wealthy farmer, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. The prime suspects? None other than the seemingly innocent Grace Marks and her fellow servant, James McDermott. But did this unassuming maid truly play a part in this bloody crime, or was she merely a pawn in a deadly game? Join us as we sift through the conflicting accounts, the whispers of a possible conspiracy, and the psychological labyrinth of a young woman trapped in a web of deceit. Was Grace a cold-blooded killer, a manipulated accomplice, or simply an innocent bystander caught in the wrong place at the wrong time? - This is the last episode we will be airing before our hiatus. Thank you so much for supporting the show, it means the world to us both. We are not sure when we will be back but we need a bit of time to recharge. Considering everything she did in her life – as a teacher, an author, a political activist, an archivist, private secretary to the premier of Alberta, and a journalist – we should be much more familiar with the name of Katherine Hughes.  Most people, however, are unaware of everything she achieved and helped to create in the first decades of the twentieth century, in part because of some of the controversies surrounding her, the most notable of which was her strident and vocal support for Irish republicanism.  In the first of three episodes about controversial Irish Canadian women, we're going to discuss the life and times of Katherine Hughes, and why, until recently, she has remained fairly forgotten in the history of Irish Canada.

Our latest global Irish conversation goes behind the scenes of the globe's most significant international organization, the United Nations, courtesy of Ireland's Ambassador to the UN, Fergal Mythen. He didn't rise to one of Ireland's most significant diplomatic postings without an impressive diplomatic career behind him.Fergal has worked on Irish-Canadian, Irish-Latin American, Irish-Caribbean, and Irish-British Affairs, including Brexit. He was on the European Community monitoring mission to the former Yugoslavia, and joined the representation of Ireland to the European Union in Brussels. We discuss his growing up in an Ireland on the cusp of change, what the opening of free second level education meant to him, the lessons he learned at the embassy in Rome about looking after people in real need, the challenges of the peripatetic diplomatic life, and his takeaways from six months representing Ireland on the UN Security Council.  He has a clear-eyed view of the UN, saying, “it's imperfect, but it can try its best to prevent hell on earth.”He's enjoying New York's vitality and its surprisingly warm welcome, getting to know the Irish-American community, and weekends spent getting his children out to play Gaelic sports.Speaking of sport, his “Seamus Plug” is a call to action to ensure a pathway for young girls and women to stay actively involved in sport and to raise awareness of the UN's sustainable development goals. Our conversation opened with a quote from John F. Kennedy which the Ambassador feels is spot on: “Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate.”LinksWebsite: Permanent Mission of Ireland to the UNTwitter: Ireland's UN AmbassadorTwitter: Ireland's UN MissionTwitter: Fergal Mythen (Personal)

The son of a Cree-Chippewa-Métis father and an Irish-Canadian mother from a Saskatchewan ranching family, he also earned multiple major awards an 18-season NHL career (1975-94). Timing is the answer. At age 66, Trottier believes he is far enough removed from the game where could tell some “secrets.” As well, In the age of Reconciliation between Canada and First Nations, the publishing industry is eager to amplify a story like his. In "All Roads Home," the example that Trottier set for Indigenous youth in his hockey heyday is captured in a foreword by author and historian Jesse Thistle (author of the international best-seller "From The Ashes"). Trottier's narrative, written with esteemed Canadian sportswriter Stephen Brunt, details his obligation to make the people who shaped him proud, especially his family. In this episode, I had the chance to have a Graventown chat with Liz Pomeroy who is known musically as 0Stella. 0Stella [oh-Stella] is the solo project of Edmonton-based, Irish-Canadian artist Liz Pomeroy. Ruthlessly authentic alt-rock blends with traditional Irish fiddle and bodhrán to create catchy pop melodies with oft-politically charged lyrics drenched in irony and rebelliousness. Whether singing in her native Irish language or English, 0Stella is reminiscent of Garbage, Paramore, PJ Harvey and The Frames.  The zero-waste advocate (hence the zero in her name) will embark on a Canada-wide solo cycling album tour in March 2022 in support of her upcoming Freefall LP. The album is the first of two mini albums (Freefall and Skyward) that comprise one larger record, Pendulum State, to be released in 2023 on Dead Doll Records.  To find out more about her music and to support her cross-country cycle tour, go to https://0stella.com/home and donate! Anakana Schofield is an award-winning Irish-Canadian writer of fiction, essays, and literary criticism. Her previous novels are Malarky (2012) and Martin John (2015). The UK edition of Bina was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize 2020. Schofield lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. A provocative, feminist novel about a woman who persists in spite of the violence, injustice, and oppression that fills her world. Bina is a woman who's had enough and isn't afraid to say so. “I'm here to warn you, not reassure you,” she announces at the book's outset. In a series of taut, urgent missives she attempts to set the record of her life straight, and in doing so, to be useful to others. Yet being useful is what landed her in jail. Empathy is her Achilles' heel. Her troubles seem to stem from an injured stranger named Eddie, and they multiply when her charity extends from delivering meals to the elderly to working with the dying. No good deed of hers goes unpunished and the costs of her capacity for care are legion, as one by one she is denied her livelihood, her health, and her freedom, but her voice continues resolutely, an act of friendship in itself. Bina is an unsettling, thought-provoking novel of formal inventiveness and moral and emotional complexity by a bold and talented writer.

George Wallace (1920-2009) was an Irish-Canadian artist who specialised in printmaking and sculpture. Through powerful imagery he commented on everything from the boredom of suburban life to human vulnerability and ageing. At times humorous, and always insightful, these works are both personal and universal. In this podcast, the artist's son Kit Wallace speaks to Anne Hodge, Curator of Prints and Drawings. Their conversation offers a fascinating insight into Wallace's life and how certain themes are manifested in his work. Anne and Kit also discuss the Wallace family's generous gift, of over 250 prints and drawings, presented to the Gallery in 2016. We Are All Prey, featuring Joanna Pocock Joanna Pocock is an Irish-Canadian writer living in London. Her writing has notably appeared in the LosAngeles Times, the Nation and on the Dark Mountain blog. Her most recent book is entitled, "Surrender," and is a memoir that mostly focuses on her adventures in the western United States. There, as she experienced menopause, she explored the history and nature of the landscapes, and met various rewilders including the notorious Finisia Medrano. The book takes its name from an eco-sex convergence she attended. Joanna and I talked on June 25, 2020. Using her book as a jumping off point, we covered a variety of topics including settler colonialism, rewilding, cultural appropriation, how sexuality changes with age, social media, the challenges for youth in today's world and finding home in a placeless society. In the background of all these subjects was the environmental crisis, which alarms us both. Raya and Stephen take cycling podcasts to new heights (sideways ones) with a delve into the world of Extreme Cycling: That is, cycling where, how, and when people don't expect it. So in an exclusive interview, we return to Podcast Studios (alright, alright, Raya's London flat) where we catch up with war photojournalist Finbarr O'Reilly. Finbarr has been in the frontline of some of the world's most dangerous places, capturing the images that would provide the real shock and awe of world conflicts. And while there, he's been cycling. That's right. When his Strava shows a strange kink, he's just gone round a landmine. (And when it stops abruptly, he's just hit one.) The art of the bicylce selfie and taking moody mid-ride pictures on a smartphone is revealed (his are SPECTACULAR), and also discussed is how the bicycle is used in world conflicts; as seen by Finbarr, first hand. And on a serious note (we can do one of those, honestly) his path to cycling and how it helped his post-conflict depression is explored. It's a fascinating listen. And if nothing else he has a beautiful Irish/Canadian accent. Put the pod on for that alone. It's like pouring maple syrup onto porridge. Plus - of course - the Velominati gets all particular on frame adornments (what?), our presenters immerse in some heftily near-the-knuckle banter and Stephen smugly explains how he has saved his riding tech, with superglue. This probably won't end well.* * it doesn't   The Cyclist Pod (c) Stephen Grant and Raya Hubbell www.cyclistpod.com Music 'Zazie' c/o Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
