It's Friday, May 16th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims kill 2 Christian teachers Boko Haram Muslim terrorists recently targeted Christians traveling near a Nigerian army base along the deadly Damboa–Maiduguri highway, reports International Christian Concern. On May 12th, two Christian teachers were killed and several others were injured when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device allegedly planted by the Islamic terror group. Blessing Luka and Gideon Bitterleaf were both devoted Christian educators with the Damboa Local Education Authority. Pray that these Muslim murderers will be held accountable. Genesis 9:6 says, "Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind." More children in United Kingdom have gender dysphoria Soaring numbers of children in England and Wales are waiting for specialist gender care from the National Health Service -- as youngsters of any age are now eligible for referral after the health service “caved to the pressure” of transgender activists to remove age limits, reports The Daily Mail and World Magazine. Average waiting times have grown to more than two years for a confused child to get a first appointment at a specialist health service clinic, with 157 of those aged under ten. There were 6,225 confused kids on the national waiting list at the end of March. That's up 12 per cent from the same point a year earlier. Young children believed to have gender dysphoria are generally given counselling and therapy with their family, but thankfully no longer prescribed hormone treatments.  Indeed, Britain's National Health Service has moved away from a “medical model” in favor of a “holistic” approach to children's gender care, as per recommendations from the Cass Review. Puberty blockers are no longer prescribed to children for the treatment of gender dysphoria, after a ban last year was made permanent in December. Former FBI Director calls for Trump's assassination Former FBI Director James Comey is facing massive backlash after he posted a photo on his Instagram page calling for the assassination of President Donald Trump, reports Christian Talk show host Todd Starnes. An image of seashells that had been arranged on the beach to spell “86 47” was posted on Comey's personal Instagram account. The number “86” is code for killing someone. And, of course, “47” refers to the fact that Donald Trump is the 47th president of the United States. Comey wrote, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem tweeted, “Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of President Trump. [the Department of Homeland Security] and Secret Service is investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.” And Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama tweeted, “This is a direct THREAT against President Trump, who has already survived two assassination attempts. BEYOND despicable. James Comey MUST face consequences.” RFK Jr. agrees to examine the dangers of Abortion Kill Pill A recent study by the Ethics and Public Policy Center on the Abortion Kill Pill, mifepristone, showed that 11% of women experience adverse effects serious enough to send them to the Emergency Room. That's 22 times higher than what the Food and Drug Administration claims.   Appearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on May 15th, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. agreed to a comprehensive review and relabeling of Mifepristone in response to a pointed question from Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, reports The Guardian. Listen. HAWLEY: “There's been a major study by the Ethics and Public Policy Center of 865,727 prescribed cases of mifepristone abortions, chemical abortions, between 2017 and 2023. This data shows the biggest study on mifepristone done, I think, ever, and it showed that nearly 11% of women experience very serious adverse health effects to include sepsis, hemorrhaging, infection, of course, emergency room visits. That rate is 22 times higher than the FDA's current label which says it's just 0.5 the incidence of serious adverse health events. “So, my question to you is this: You previously testified at the committee that you would do a top-to-bottom review of mifepristone. Do you continue to stand by that? And don't you think that this new data shows the need to do a review is, in fact, very pressing?” KENNEDY: “It's alarming, and clearly it indicates that, at very least, the label should be changed. I've asked Marty Makary, who's the director of FDA, to do a complete review and to report back.” HAWLEY: “Good!” South Carolina Supreme Court affirms Heartbeat Law The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that the state may enforce its heartbeat-based abortion ban, rejecting an argument by Planned Parenthood to weaken the law, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Enacted in 2023, the law effectively bans most abortions after about six weeks gestation. South Carolina Republican Governor Henry McMaster told the Daily Wire, “Time and time again, we have defended the right to life in South Carolina, and time and time again, we have prevailed. Today's ruling is another clear and decisive victory that will ensure the lives of countless unborn children remain protected and that South Carolina continues to lead the charge in defending the sanctity of life.” Psalm 127:3 says, "Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward." Christian band under fire by atheists and superintendent And finally, a popular Christian band is under fire from atheists along with Davidson County Schools in North Carolina, reports Blue Ridge Broadcasting. The 3 Heath Brothers band had been invited to host an anti-bullying event at Hasty Elementary School. Their performance included a number of songs that mentioned God. Afterwards, they gave the kids a devotional pamphlet that included Bible verses. The Freedom From Religion Foundation was enraged over the performance and accused the school of being a recruiting ground for Christianity. The God-hating attorney, Madeline Ziegler, wrote, “The district cannot allow non-school persons to treat schools as a recruiting ground for their religious mission.  Public schools are not an appropriate place for outside adults to convince students to convert to Christianity.” Sadly, the School Superintendent Gregg Slate was just as horrified with the Christian band and wrote a lengthy letter of apology to the atheists. But then, the school district went a step further. They had the audacity to demand that the 3 Heath Brothers remove video of the event from their social media pages. A bizarre request indeed. School officials claim they were duped. But Nicholas Heath of the 3 Heath Brothers denied that there was any proselytizing or worship service at the event. Come watch the Los Angeles Brass Alliance (LAB-A) at 7PM on May 4th at Glendale First baptist Church for their second installation of Next Up! This free concert (generously sponsored by Bob Reeves Brass) spotlights LAB-A's annual collaboration between emerging LA-based composers and brass musicians.  Learn more at: www.labrassalliance.org. Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Michael Dease, commercial trombonist from Los Angeles. About Michael: Michael Dease is one of the world's eminent trombonists, lending his versatile sound and signature improvisations to over 200 recordings and groups as diverse as Grammy winning artists David Sanborn, Christian McBride, Michel Camilo, and Alicia Keys. Born in Augusta, GA, he played the saxophone and trumpet before choosing the trombone at age 17. In 2001, Dease moved to New York City to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School, earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees, and quickly established a reputation as a brilliant soloist, sideperson, and bandleader.   Best Next Thing (Posi-Tone, 2022), Dease's newest release, his ninth on Posi-Tone, gathers together an assemblage of exceptional musicians to help him interactively explore the essence of the blues and reframe the abstract truths of jazz as the "Best Next Thing "for today's audience of listeners. Dease, the winner of the 69th Annual DownBeat Magazine Poll for Trombonist of the Year and multi-Grammy award winner, is also a sought-after lead, section and bass trombonist with today's leading jazz orchestras. His experiences include bands led by Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Rufus Reid, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. However, it is on the frontline of quintets and sextets led by master musicians like The Heath Brothers, Winard Harper, Renee Rosnes, Bill Charlap, Claudio Roditi, and Lewis Nash, where Dease has revitalized the trombone's image. Not content to simply improvise, Dease arranges and composes for many different bands, constantly adjusting his tone and timbre to add just the right flavor to the music. Dease's unique blend of curiosity, hard work and optimism has helped him earn worldwide recognition, including awards from ASCAP, The International Trombone Association, Yamaha, Eastern Trombone Workshop, New York Youth Symphony, Hot House Magazine, Michigan State University, among others. Dease was profiled in Cicily Janus' book, The New Face of Jazz: An Intimate Look at Today's Living Legends (Random House). His experience in the studio has led him to produce several recording sessions for emerging artists, often composing and writing liner notes for the releases. Dease's singular talent has made him an effective and prolific teacher, resulting in invitations, master classes and residencies at University of North Texas, Scranton University, University of Iowa, Florida State College, Broward College, and many institutions abroad. He serves as Professor of Jazz Trombone at the renowned Michigan State University jazz program and has also been on faculty at Queens College - CUNY, The New School and North-eastern University. Many of Dease's current and former students are enjoying successful careers in the music world. Always an informed, but forward-thinking musician, Dease learned the craft from trombone legends Wycliffe Gordon and Joseph Alessi. His associations have run the entire spectrum of musical experience: Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra, Elton John, Neal Diamond, Illinois Jacquet, Slide Hampton & The World of Trombones, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, WDR Big Band, George Gruntz, Billy Harper, and numerous others. Dease enjoys spending every possible minute with his extraordinary wife and Professor of Percussion at MSU, Gwendolyn Dease, and their daughters Brooklyn & Charley. Michael Dease is a Yamaha Performing Artist and uses Pickett Brass and Vandoren mouthpieces exclusively. One Minute Governance
120. Making good decisions: You'll never be perfect

One Minute Governance

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2022 1:57

When it comes to good governance, the conditions for great decision-making will never be perfect. But the journey is what counts. Background music is Of the Stars by KC Roberts & the Live Revolution   SCRIPT One thing I noticed when I first read chapter 1 of the Heath Brothers' Decisive is that I fall victim to the four villains of decision making basically every time I make any decision. I bet you felt the same. And it gets even worse when you're trying to make decisions as a group. Everyone brings their own “flavour” of the four villains to the table, making it super difficult to manage everything perfectly. Decisive offers some cool ideas, which you should review and test out yourself. I want to suggest that the status quo of boards of directors specifically, and corporate governance in general, create basically the perfect conditions for the four villains to thrive: time scarcity + information asymmetry + expertise asymmetry + rule-driven norms and so on, so on, so on. So here's the thing: if you buy into my definition of good governance even a little bit, the definition being actively creating conditions that maximize the likelihood that effective decisions will get made, then the status quo of boards – from the rules of order, to the structure of meetings, to the layout of the boardroom to the flow of conversations – all of it has the significant potential to work AGAINST good governance. So, to the extent that you see a bit of the four villains of decision-making in yourself, your organization, and your boardroom…what you're seeing is NORMAL, but it's also bad governance. The next time you craft an agenda, prepare a board presentation, frame a key decision, kick off a conversation, read your pre-read materials, etc. Keep the four villains in mind and ask how you can set yourself, your board, your management team up to create the conditions for effective decisions. It won't be perfect, but the effort itself is, in my opinion, the key to good governance.

One Minute Governance
119. Making good decisions: Overconfidence

One Minute Governance

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2022 1:43

Overconfidence is my "favourite" of the Heath Brothers' four villains of decision making. It's simultaneously super obnoxious and super universal. And boardrooms provide the perfect environment for overconfidence to thrive and get in the way of your decisions. Background music is Of the Stars by KC Roberts & the Live Revolution ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Freakonomics Radio Season 9, Episode 46 Gender Differences in Overconfidence and Decision-Making in High-Stakes Competitions Gender Differences in Performance Predictions: Evidence from the Cognitive Reflection Test The Power of Precise Predictions   SCRIPT Maybe “favourite” isn't the perfect word here, but I'll say it anyway: overconfidence is my favourite of the Heath Brothers' four villains of decision-making. It's so complex, insidious, unconscious, and nearly ubiquitous. Overconfidence even FEELS good, so…well, it's pretty hard to steer completely around it in group decision environments like boardrooms. Take some time to scan the academic literature on overconfidence, including awesome recent stuff by Philip Tetlock from University of Pennsylvania, and the amazing book “Range” by David Epstein. Basically, it turns out that the more expertise you have in a specific field, the worse you get at making predictions about that field…and the more confident are at making those bad predictions. Another messed up thing about overconfidence? It's deeply gendered. Men, unsurprisingly, fall victim to overconfidence far more readily than women – hence the tendency to “mansplain.” Women, on the other hand, are more likely to be victims of UNDERconfidence, which as you can imagine also impedes effective decision-making. I've put some interesting links in the episode description for you to check out if you want to see more of the research in this area. People usually become corporate directors specifically because they have deep expertise in some area or another. So, as experts, how can we be useful in the boardroom without inviting the villains into the mix? My best advice is to lean on your expertise to ask big questions, tell cool stories, start interesting conversations…instead of just telling people what you think the future holds. No matter how confident you feel.

Boardrooms might seem like emotionless environments, but they *really* aren't. Even though we can't stop ourselves from feeling emotions, we can definitely acknowledge and manage the influence our emotions have on our decisions. In this episode, I refer to a recent episode of the No Stupid Questions podcast. Listen to it here:  Background music is Of the Stars by KC Roberts & the Live Revolution   SCRIPT Another of the Heath Brothers' villains of decision-making is short-term emotion. Many of us think of corporate decisions, especially those that happen in boardrooms, as being predictable, regulated, structured, even somber. In my experience, that tends to be a pretty accurate description, but that absolutely does not mean that the process is devoid of emotion. Is embarrassment an emotion? According to the recent episode 109 of the awesome podcast “No Stupid Questions,” it definitely is. I talk to *a lot* of corporate directors…like a lot a lot…and there are as many as not who've confided in me that they've found themselves at one point or another unwilling to ask a question or raise a concern because they were for all intents and purposes EMBARRASSED. To admit they don't know, to disagree with a respected colleague, to push against the status quo, or whatever. And if someone – likely several someones – in your boardroom are too embarrassed to express themselves, then that somber boardroom vibe is clearly working at cross purposes to good governance. And that's not even addressing the times that directors might spontaneously feel anger, frustration, pride, elation…all in ways that could negatively impact their ability to be impartial participants in making decisions. In your homework, the Heath Brothers offer some good advice here. I think I would boil my own advice down to something pretty simple: sllllooowwww doowwwwnnn. Good decisions take time. Most decisions aren't emergencies, and if they are, you're even more likely to get tripped up by short-term emotion!

Next up on the list of the "villains" of decision-making is narrow framing. It's basically what we do to make decisions look and feel simpler than they are. And it's a major problem! Background music is Of the Stars by KC Roberts & the Live Revolution   SCRIPT: Another one of the Heath Brothers' villains of decision making is what they call “narrow framing.” Here's my take. I always felt like the expression “don't bring me problems; bring me solutions” was just about the stupidest thing a leader could say. First off, isn't it a leader's job to help to, y'know…lead people through solutions to difficult problems? Maybe more importantly, it feels like an attempt to force people to expedite a decision. What's the easiest and most defensible way to expedite a decision? Probably to artificially frame it as a go/no-go scenario. “Are we gonna do X or not do X?” Or maybe if we're lucky it's a slightly more creative “are we gonna do X, or are we gonna do Y?” And in my experience, the conditions for decision-making in boardrooms are so bad that to a senior manager the idea of bringing multiple options to the board – as opposed to a done-deal ready for approval – is like a living nightmare. But what's the point of a board? For my take, listen back to episodes 3 and 51. I don't think any of us would answer that the point of a board is just to be an approving machine. In fact, even when managers bring go/no-go decisions to the board, they're usually only doing it because it's really hard to figure out how to engage the board in an efficient AND useful discussion about multiple paths or options. But the fact is that virtually every decision truly does have multiple paths or options beyond “yes” and “no”. The best way to start building better habits is to just rip off the band-aid and TRY bringing a decision to the board earlier, before management has digested it into a go/no-go binary. Give them a chance to help you narrow it down and provide varied perspectives. Whatever part of the discussion goes well, say out loud that it was good, and try to recreate those conditions again in the future. Whatever goes poorly, say THAT out loud and try to avoid those conditions in the future. Whatever you do, don't just relapse back into your old, narrow framing habits.

By now, we've all heard about confirmation bias, and if you did your homework from the last episode, it'll be really clear to you how it gets in the way of effective decision-making. So, what are we supposed to do about it? Background music is Of the Stars by KC Roberts & the Live Revolution   SCRIPT: Now that you've read chapter 1 of Decisive by the Heath Brothers, let's take some time to talk through what they call the four villains of decision making, starting with confirmation bias. Since you're interested in corporate governance, chances are this isn't the first time you've heard or read about confirmation bias. The unconscious compulsion to embrace information that supports what you already believe to be true, and to reject information that contradicts what you already believe to be true. Let's be super, extra, ultra clear here: YOU, no matter who you are or what your perception of yourself might be, DO THOSE THINGS! *YOU* embrace information that supports what you already believe – regardless of whether you are correct – while rejecting information that contradicts what you believe. You aren't broken. It's just how people work. And you can already picture how this messes things up when groups – like boards of directors, for example – are trying to make decisions on short timelines and with incomplete information. Add on the fact that even that incomplete information sometimes gets delivered to boards in vast quantities – maybe hundreds and hundreds of pages. How else can we expect directors to synthesize all of it in the process of preparing for a meeting or decision? Confirmation bias gives us a shortcut – pay attention only to the stuff that tells us we're probably right. If you want advice on managing confirmation bias beyond what you learned in Decisive, a google rabbit hole awaits you. For now, try just re-framing board meetings as an opportunity to try to prove yourself WRONG. It's way more fun than loudly trying to convince people you're right, and you're WAY more likely to learn something from your peers.

Since we've established good governance as actively creating conditions to maximize the likelihood that effective decisions will get made, let's start exploring what it means to make good decisions. Over the next five episodes, we'll use the first chapter of Decisive by the Heath Brothers as our textbook. Download a free copy here: https://heathbrothers.com/member-content/decisive-chapter-1/ As always, the background music is Of the Stars by KC Roberts & the Live Revolution.   SCRIPT: I've spent the last 114 episodes talking about corporate governance as the way decisions get made in a corporation, and the first chunk of this season talking about good governance as creating the conditions for effective decisions to get made, but what does that even mean? Well, this is one question where we – meaning YOU – have access a rich trove of scientific research and real-world evidence, so you won't have to just trust me and OMG to get you there. And lots of organizations apply what we've learned from all those insights to empower MANAGERS to make good decisions. Think of all the cool ways that meetings have changed over the years, or workspaces, or onboarding, or offsites. The thing is, no matter how well these new approaches work, they basically never find their way into boardrooms. Board processes, structures, rules of order, agendas, boardroom layouts…they all just basically stay the same, or close enough to the same that the impact on decisions is essentially nothing. And you know what? The moment you start paying attention, I bet you'll basically see and feel boardroom decisions suffering as a result. Over the next few episodes, we'll go over a few important elements of good – and bad – decision conditions. Our textbook, so to speak, will be the first chapter of the book Decisive by Chip and Dan Heath. Your homework is to read it before the next episode comes out in a few days. You can download a free copy by following the link in the episode description. I'll also put some links to some other cool articles on decision making in case you're interested. Have fun!

How to Multi-Thread Throughout the Organization | Amy Hrehovcik - 1499

The Sales Evangelist

A common problem for salespeople is interacting solely with just one stakeholder. But in reality, involving multiple people is the perfect strategy to help deals go through (and make more people excited about them.) In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, Donald is joined by Amy Hrehovcik to discuss her strategy to apply multi-threading throughout your sales process. Amy's sales experience is extensive. After selling for nearly a decade, Amy finished at Thomson Reuters before transitioning to marketing consulting (eventually working in a startup as the Chief of Customer Value.) She later pivoted to sales enablement, realizing she had a passion for teaching sellers and empowering sales leaders. Amy now hosts the podcast Revenue Real Hotline, where she discusses uncomfortable conversations in sales. Why did she start the podcast? She wrote an article (Mental Health, The Greatest Competitive Advantage That You'll Ever Know), and it was viewed by the great Andy Paul. He invited her onto his show, and participating in that made her realize the importance of podcasting in sales. (Check out Donald's guest appearance on her show.) Today's topic: Multi-threading Multi-threading describes liaising with multiple stakeholders and executive sponsors throughout an organization.  The average number of buyers involved in the buying motion was 6.7. Since that time, it has increased. Because her main selling vertical was big law, Amy realized the importance of proactively engaging with multiple stakeholders early on to minimize the objections buyers would have when moving the deal forward. Why should you consider this selling approach? Not to sound cliche (but we will anyway), it's the same reason you don't put all your eggs in one basket. Amy began to hold off on doing deep-dive demos until at least three executive sponsors were in the room because it diversified the risk for the individuals involved.  They were no longer the sole advocate for a product (assuming they like it), thus limiting the amount of blame and buyer's remorse people might feel after implementation. Because the buying process is getting longer, executives will invariably drop out of the acquisition process. But when you have two or three other executives who want to see the deal move forward, it is much more likely to move through. How can you begin to develop this approach? Communicate with the original executive sponsor that you want to help them make the right decision, and you can do that by demonstrating the business case on your behalf.  Ask permission to have conversations with others or other departments to learn how others reach a particular goal. The Heath Brothers wrote in one of their books (Made to Stick) the idea of bright spots. Because of the relationships she developed throughout this discovery phase, she could return to her original executive sponsor and deliver a detailed report that helped both of their causes. One major takeaway from multithreading? Just do it. It's like anything else- you might not be good at it at first. But with practice, you'll begin to see success. To contact Amy, connect with her on LinkedIn to learn more about her process with multithreading. This episode is brought to you in part by Skipio. Are you sick of crickets? Part of sales and marketing alignment is having the same goals. Should “High Quality Deals” be one of yours? Hank Barne’s of Gartner certainly thinks so.   Hank and I chat about everything from educating buyers, to why the 50K deal is no easier than the million dollar one, and how to align and run your sales and marketing.   Low quality deals lead to longer sales cycles, disappointment in deployment and churn. And while many of the issues have to do with buyers and their process, as Hank says,  “if it’s a buyers problem it’s sales and marketing’s problem too.” And what we really learn is it all comes down to confidence, communications and empathy, both between sales and marketing, and between us and our customers.  This is research driven heady stuff, but can really change the way you think about pipeline, revenue and lifetime value. The last take away, “get the buyers confident in their ability to buy!”  I’m guessing many of you will hear this podcast and want to see Hank’s full webinar on High Quality Deals. His lyrical approach to line construction and depth of harmonic sensibility allow him to record and play all over the world with such master players and burgeoning stars as David Hazeltine, Ugonna Okegwo, Donald Vega, Willie Jones III, Rick Germanson, Quincy Davis, David Wong, Jason Brown, Dezon Douglas and Rodney Green. A prolific composer, Fowser has celebrated four cooperative releases on Posi-tone Records, co-led with vibraphone virtuoso, Behn Gillece. His debut release as a leader, Standing Tall earned him the number-one spot on JazzWeek Radio Chart seven weeks in a row. Each track reflects a contemporary treatment of conventional harmonic concepts—a creative manipulation that has become part of his signature sound as a composer and an arranger, as well as a soloist. Set for release in February 2017, Now Hear This, Fowser’s second release as a soloist for Posi-tone features 11 original compositions and the same chart-topping lineup as Standing Tall: Josh Bruneau, Rick Germanson, Paul Gill and Jason Tiemann. Performing live every Friday night, his blistering quintet headlines the New York nightlife scene at the Django inside the Roxy Hotel on the corner of Walker and Church (www.thedjangonyc.com). Fowser’s fluid phrasing and melodic approach to improvising developed as a result of his exposure to the rich musical legacy of the Philly Sound, following in time with the rhythmic footsteps of John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Philly Joe Jones, Benny Golson and The Heath Brothers. Attending The University of the Arts in the early 2000s, Fowser studied with Tony Salicandro and Chris Farr, before transferring to William Paterson University in New Jersey, where he studied with NEA Jazz Master, Harold Mabern—an artistic force who remains one of Fowser’s major musical influences, today. As a grad student at SUNY Purchase, Fowser studied with contemporary legends of the tenor saxophone Ralph Lalama, Grant Stewart and Eric Alexander—the latter with whom he forged a professional relationship, subbing for Alexander on many of his gigs, and playing with him live, in classic two tenor context. Becoming more visible on the live music scene, in the latter 2000s Fowser enjoyed both downtown and uptown residencies at iconic New York venues. Hosting the session at Smalls Jazz Club every Tuesday for four years, and playing the late set at Smoke Jazz and Supper Club every Friday for two years, he followed headlining sets of such masters as the late Cedar Walton, Buster Williams and perhaps his greatest influence, GSupport the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)

In a world awash in data, you’d think it would be relatively easy to make informed, objective decisions. But there’s a problem that gets in your way, even with all of this information at your fingertips: You see what you want to see. On this episode of Choiceology with Dan Heath, we look at the tendency to favor information that confirms pre-existing beliefs. The episode begins in Europe in the 16th century, with a secret debate about sainthood, and then moves to a harrowing story of crime and punishment in contemporary America. Neuroscientist Tali Sharot explains the biological roots of this bias, and how it is actually a fundamentally useful mental shortcut. Her book is called The Influential Mind. Dean Gillispie is now listed with the National Registry of Exonerations. Mark Godsey’s book on his experience advocating for Dean Gillispie is called Blind Injustice. You can find out how to fight back against the influence of this bias in your financial decisions in a bonus article on Schwab.com. Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. You don’t make decisions in a vacuum. Context matters, perhaps more than you think. On this episode of Choiceology with Dan Heath, we explore the subtle, sometimes hidden structures that influence your decisions. You’ll see how small changes in the way choices are presented can have a huge impact on everything from vandalism to traffic congestion to retirement savings. Tara Austin of Ogilvy Change tells the dramatic story of how she and her team worked to reduce street crime in a London neighborhood after a devastating riot. It was a surprisingly simple project that had a measurable impact. You can see images from the project in this BBC News article. You’ll also hear about an experiment we ran on a busy intersection in an attempt to reduce collisions between bicycles and pedestrians—using nothing but a roll of duct tape. And behavioral design expert Sille Krukow explains how choice architecture can channel our inherent laziness to help us make better decisions. After listening, you can read our bonus article Nudge Yourself to learn even more about how to turn smart decisions into easier ones. Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. You’ll find a complete record of all past Sets at jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca After many years of being a Mingus fan, I recently got hold of his “Pithecanthropus” lp, and I’m excited to feature the great title track here. I’d never heard this music before. Though I started buying vinyl lps almost 50 years ago, I’m not a true collector. While I cherish my roughly 2,000 albums, and the artists they represent, I’ve never been methodical or obsessive about them. I don’t have the complete works of any artists, except perhaps the Uruguayan jazz fusion group Opa, who only ever issued two albums. There are so many holes in my collection. I could easily produce a Greatest Albums list of classics that I don’t have. And it would feature all of my favorite artists, including, Coltrane, Miles, Sarah Vaughan, Corea, Hancock and Joni Mitchell. Sure, I’d love to have all those albums I don’t have. But I’m not rolling in money, and from the beginning, a huge percentage of my lps have come from second hand stores, where buying choices are very much constrained by opportunity. In recent years, many albums have come from yard sales, the odd few from thrift stores, and I’d estimate that a good 20% of my music came to me by way of friends and acquaintances giving me the collections that were growing mold in their basements. A few albums were given new, as gifts, like my very first albums by Dianne Reeves, B. B. King and Bob Moses. I won my first Pat Martino album from a Boston area jazz station, by answering the question, “What was the original name of the Crusaders?” (answer: the Jazz Crusaders). I won one of my Stevie Wonder albums in an amusement park arcade. And let me not forget the early Miles, Trane and Dinah Washington albums I lifted from my parents’ collection when I went away to school. Just last year, I bought 38 albums at $5. a pop from local radio station Jazz FM, after they converted all their music into digital files. And among them was the Heath Brothers’ “Passing Thru”, which I’d added to my wish list about 35 years ago and just never got around to buying. That was a time I might have bought the album at the concert where I heard the Heaths perform. I probably didn’t have the funds. But this week's featured Chet Baker album was bought at a similar concert, an all-night affair in a church – and no, Baker wasn’t there to perform. Adding albums to my collection has very often been a matter of exploration or gut feeling. The very best is when I buy an album because it’s by a sideman from another album I like, or features tunes or instrumentation I like, or because the album art appeals. Then taking it home, playing it and discovering a gem. And let me not forget the great many discoveries that have come by way of hearing something played on the radio, in a friend’s home, on a film soundtrack, or by word of mouth. Getting back to the Mingus album this essay started with: I think that Mingus is one of those artists that simply never issued a bad album. There’s always feeling in his work, which when coupled with artistry equals “can’t lose”. So I’m always on the lookout to add more of his work. And one of the great benefits of collecting music on vinyl as haphazardly as I do, is that there’s always more out there to find. Always another Mingus album still to discover, or an album by some phenom whose name I don’t even know. Thrive & Enjoy! Kirby

Rugby is often maligned in the press for its inevitable relationship with concussion, with numerous high-profile incidents only compounding the issue. If your reading is restricted to the newspapers, you’d be forgiven for thinking that a culture of denial is in place, however when you delve deeper, there are numerous examples of innovative and powerful research, all of which is already leading to law & policy changes. One leading light in the sport is the Rugby Football Union (RFU), who are actively conducting policy-informing research, and using this to shape the game in order to maximise player welfare. Steffan Griffin, of the BJSM, caught up with Dr Simon Kemp (CMO), Dr Matt Cross (Professional Rugby Medical Research Officer), and Dr Mike England (RFU’s Community Rugby Medical Director), who provide an insight into their work, which is not only shaping the way the game is played, but provides a fantastic blueprint for other sports to follow. This is Part 1: in the build up to the Berlin Consensus Conference. Timeline: 01:15: Can you give us some insight into the scale of concussion in Rugby Union? 04:00: Are the rising rates due to increased incidence or due to people being more likely to recognise and report it nowadays? 06:45: What is the RFU’s general approach to the management of Concussion? 08:45: Can you tell us a little about the ‘recognise, remove, recover and return’ campaign? 14:00: So the aim is to remove as many concussed players from the pitch as soon as possible: what else is the RFU doing to try and ensure this? 19:15: you have published a number of papers in the BJSM – one of which showed a relationship between concussion and subsequent musculoskeletal injuries – could you please elaborate? 21:50: What does this mean about the return to sport following concussion? In this episode you will recognise dysfunctions observed in your business, organisation or team and be able to remedy them relatively easily and quickly. But first, let me share a moment in my own life when my personal situational awareness was severely compromised: I was teetering on the edge of the abyss, the breeze felt like it was gently mocking and luring me over the cliff and down to the unwelcoming rocks beneath. It was so tempting to just let gravity take charge and give over to the fate of failure. I snapped out from the dangerous thinking and checked my wrist computer. I'd stayed too long hovering here, I needed to return to the surface before the poisonous nitrogen made me lose all perspective. I pressed a tiny blast of air into my jacket to lift me upward to the waiting boat.  Scuba diving is a tremendous example of having complete situational awareness Scuba diving is a tremendous example of having complete situational awareness: To enjoy the experience, you need to be trained and be completely aware of everything that is going on with you, your buddy, other divers, the creatures of the deep, your depth, your air, the time, your breathing. Oh, and watch out for that Conga eel lurking protectively under that rock. And is that a white tip or a tiger shark in the distance? And because you never dive alone, that situational awareness needs to be shared with your buddy and everyone else in the water with you. Scuba diving has the potential to show you the most awesome creatures and places on this beautiful planet and the potential to crush you. We all have, within us, that same potential. To show the world something awesome or to crush ourselves into insignificance. So what was happening to me as I teetered on the edge of that abyss being tempted to slip over the edge and dive down deep when my conscious mind should be screaming at me to avoid such danger? Why had my mind slipped into some sort of reverie - an almost dreamlike momentary lapse of concentration? The Five components of effective teams are integrated and together create this thing we call "synergy". Performance issues in teams are rooted in one or more of five distinct areas: The first is the command instruction(s) for the team. The second is shared experience. Third (and most neglected) is shared situational awareness shared values. and lastly Effective and engaging communication In each area, there are common key issues. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of the symptoms, just an overview of the top and most frequently uncovered issues. A lack of clear direction, which can be a lack of clarity and, or lack of direction. Frequently, there are team leadership roles missing within the team. The team themselves may function reasonably well, but without leadership, they falter under pressure. Just watch any football or rugby match when the skipper is injured or sent off. Many teams work in silos, individuals or small groups working independently from the others. Sharing little information, knowledge or expertise. This situation is often exacerbated by unhealthy rivalry between team members or sub groups. The third, and often neglected factor of team cohesiveness is, shared situational awareness. Team members may cooperate, but they do not collaborate. Essentially, team members can be nice enough to each other and say that they agree, but their actions defy their words. Many teams have something of a blame culture. This is when individuals give as much or even, more time, covering their own backsides, and when anything goes wrong, it is always someone else who is to blame. Shared values are the foundation of any team. Whether it is the pride in representing country, or the simple desire to make every single day your masterpiece. When personal values are in conflict with the presumed shared values, the personal values will win out every time. When a footballer's livelihood depends on his performance in the EPL next month and nothing to do with doing his best for his national side, selfishness will win out. That, sadly, is pretty well all teams. Often, the team has not learned how to communicate internally. Individuals do not share their context, or inform other members of changes that are pertinent. What's the glue for teams? Knowing your goals, having the right experience and resources and working together towards shared values are well known to be important in effective team performance. Shared Situational Awareness though is the glue for teams. How you understand my context and situation and we adapt to each new situation as it arises - collaborating to gain those synergies everyone promises. And the key to SSA is open and candid communication. It's the leader’s job to enable and encourage that. Organisations accomplish what they do because of teamwork Whether you are in business, sport, education, the church and even marriage – teamwork is what paves the way to success. What a leader can do with a great team far surpasses anything they can accomplish alone. As a leader learns how to unite the right people around a shared vision, their influence truly begins to take off. According to Dr. John C. Maxwell in his book, The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork, the 1st Law of Teamwork is The Law of Significance: One is too small a number to achieve greatness. Leaders who fail to promote teamwork undermine their own potential and erode the best efforts of the people with whom they work. To accomplish anything significant, leaders must learn to link up with others. What's wrong with being a "self-made" man? I was working with a very successful businessman. In our first session, he proudly informed me that he was a “self-made man”. He was rather taken aback when I appeared unimpressed. After all, this man is successful and rich. I responded, “That’s too bad. Imagine just how much you could have achieved with a great team.” The reality, of course, is that no-one is truly self-made. We may not have been gifted our businesses by our parents, but they have played a part in making you. Your education may have been cut short or even, not especially good, but your teachers did impart something. For a few of my clients, what they perceive as being negative in their lives is the turning point for their success. A leader’s job is to develop the team so that the team is effective! But what is an effective team? There are probably as many definitions of an effective team as there are teams. But there does seem to be a commonality and this, I believe, distills to: An effective team has unity of cohesion and effort towards a common goal. The Five components of an effective team These five components stem from research undertaken largely by the US Military (in particular, post-Gulf War I, when the number of “friendly fire” incidents became unacceptable). Only when all five components are present in a team is there the potential for true unity of cohesion and effort. Shared Values The visible aspect of leadership is just 10% of the whole. What sinks leaders is the 90 % below the surface. Shared values define the team. Without common values, everyone on the team has a different opinion about what’s important. Values put people on the same page. Just as personal values influence and guide an individual’s behaviour, organisational values set the standard for a team’s performance. Too often, the values of a team are prepared by a marketing consultant, discussed and pasted on walls. Yet these are not the underlying true values of the individual’s within the team. Rarely does one see a team’s values statement include payment for their contribution, nor do we often see values pertaining to providing a safe and secure home for our families. When we ask our clients why they work, the number 1 response is unsurprisingly, money. Joint second is providing for a family home and education for children, third is God. I liken shared values to the image of an iceberg. The 10% above the water is what we see of the values that a person or the team holds – it represents the behaviours that are manifest. The 90% below the water is the character of the individual or team – which is defined by the values that the team members hold. It’s the 90% below the surface that sinks the ship. The leader who neglects the real shared values of the team may find that the team: Stagnates or fails to grow Avoids obstacles Loses achievement-oriented employees Encourages team members to focus on their own careers and individual goals Is easily distracted Clear Command Instruction Clarity about the direction the team should take is critical, yet so often it is unclear... if it is known at all. Clear command instruction gives team members direction and confidence. If you lead your team, then you are responsible for identifying a worthy and compelling vision and articulating it to the team. People continually need to be shown the team’s compass clearly and creatively so that their actions align and they stay motivated by a captivating picture of the future. Each team member should be able to make decisions readily and rapidly based on the clarity of the command instruction. Clarity is critical. Often we see the use of delightful, yet nebulous words used to describe the goal and provide the direction. The word excellence (or excellent) is one example. Like values statements, the intentions are good, but what does excellence mean? We each have our own definition, all perfectly valid, of what excellence means. In “Made to Stick“, the Heath Brothers refer to this as ‘Commanders Intent’ and recommend that leaders strip down the goal to the core message. The Combat Maneuver Training Centre, the unit in charge of military simulations in the US recommends that officers arrive at the Commander’s Intent by asking themselves two questions: If we do nothing else during tomorrow’s mission we must __________________. The single most important thing that we do tomorrow is __________________. In this way, any team member who faces a decision can make that decision in line with the command instruction. Establishing this takes time. Sometimes it is easy – when there are specific standards laid down by an industry body such as a Ministry of Health, the Inland Revenue or a professional body – then the goal of achieving those standards makes command instruction comparatively straightforward: Achieve these standards! But what happens once those standards are achieved? The leader then needs to create the new standards and articulate these to the team. And like any goal you want to achieve it has to be SMART, sensory and compelling, and of course, it must satisfy the values. Leaders who are unable to articulate clarity of command instruction often find that the team fails to commit and: This creates ambiguity among the team about direction and priorities Team member’s watch windows of opportunity close due to excessive analysis and unnecessary delay It also breeds lack of confidence and fear of failure Team’s revisit discussions and decisions again and again And also encourages second-guessing among team members Shared Experience It's all well and good to have a goal, but how do we do this? This is when shared experience comes into play. Having clarity of direction that will satisfy shared values is only the beginning of effectiveness for the team. Shared experienced is the ‘how the team will do this’. What skills and knowledge are needed to achieve this? Teams are, of course, filled with individuals. And each individual brings with them their own set of skills, knowledge and abilities. And all players in a team have a place where they add the most value. Winning teams require more than the right people. You may have a group of talented individuals, but if each person is out of position, then the team won’t reach its potential. Leading a successful team involves putting people in spots where they can excel. The leader can think of team members as resources and fill the spots like playing checkers, or the leader can recognise the particular strengths and abilities of each individual. Using their strengths work together as a team – like a chess player. When the leader fails to use the right strengths and abilities… This creates resentment among team members who have different standards of performance Encourages mediocrity The team misses deadlines and key deliverables And places an undue burden on the team leader as the sole source of discipline Shared Situational Awareness Shared situational awareness is something you experience every day driving in heavy traffic. But not everyone behaves rationally The most neglected component of developing effective teams is shared situational awareness. Shared Situational Awareness is when all team members’ continuous perceptions of themselves and their peers in relation to the dynamic environment of business, competition, goals and the ability to predict, and then execute based on shared perception. This is often neglected because it is so difficult to pin down. And the moment that you do pin down that you are fully aware of the current situation, the situation has already changed. Further, in circumstances where an individual’s situational awareness is well developed, much of the processing is unconscious. Take, for example, driving a vehicle: When you first learned to drive you were acutely aware of the very many things that required your attention. All of which had an impact or potential impact on your response. You have to steer, change gear, accelerate, break, and watch what is behind you, beside you, in front of you. You have to predict the behaviour of every other road user and make decisions based on a common set of rules. All on the basis of trust. Trust that the other road users will obey the rules, trust that the brake pedal will work, and trust in your own judgment call about what each other road user will or will not do. Now imagine attempting to instruct another person remotely how to do that, in real time. You would need to know that person’s knowledge and experience, where they were, what vehicle they were driving and all the other information. Impossible. To enable this to work, the leader and each team member needs to be sure that every team member will perform their role effectively and how each will respond to given, known (and unknown) situations (following the command instruction based on known shared values using their known abilities and experience). It also means that team members look out for each other in the interests of the team. When shared situational awareness is poor, teams: Conceal their weaknesses and mistakes from one another Hesitate to ask for help or provide constructive feedback Hesitate to offer help outside their own areas of responsibility Jump to conclusions about the intentions and aptitudes of others without attempting to clarify them Fail to recognise and tap into one another’s skills and experiences Waste time and energy managing their behaviours for effect Hold grudges Dread meetings and find reasons to avoid spending time together Communication Without effective communications, none of the rest matter The fifth component of an effective team is in their communications. Communication brings to light disagreements so that teammates can hammer out their differences and move forward in unison. Communication also spreads information, which eliminates redundancies and prevents teammates from working at cross‐purposes. Communication within the team must continuously reinforce and support each of the other four components. Openly and candidly. And critically, communication is the response you get. If a team member does not understand what their teammate is saying, the teammate is responsible for getting their message across. The culture within the team is created, reinforced or undermined by the communication within the team. Consider communication as a family virus. The virus spreads rapidly and easily because the family stays close together and has members who are similar. The more virulent the virus, the quicker it spreads… and for communication, nothing spreads faster than gossip, cynicism and untruths. A wise leader ensures that they inoculate every team member with their chosen contagion that supports the desired team culture and prevents the spread of any malicious or damaging chatter. Teams that have poor communication: Have boring meetings Create environments where back-channel politics and personal attacks thrive Ignore controversial topics that are critical to team success Fail to tap into all the opinions and perspectives of team members Waste time and energy with posturing and interpersonal risk management Team dysfunctions and issues Data collected from 582 teams between Jan 2008 and June 2011 in South East Asia organisations. Shared Situational Awareness was the #1 problem, with communications coming in second In my work with hundreds of work teams, we have found that the lack of Shared Situational Awareness is always the number one cause of issues in teams. Even in teams that are high performing. It is most often manifest in the apparent lack of trust in the team. Lack of trust is the fruit of behaviours that good SSA would overcome. The second dysfunction of teams is communication – often brought about because of a lack of shared situational awareness or, as most people think of it, trust. Clarity of command instruction is most often the third issue teams face, though in competitive business organisations the third issue is frequently shared values. Diagnosing the Issues in the team Data from 582 teams, showing number of symptoms in each team for each component In our work and research with organisation teams across industries and across the globe we have identified the symptoms of team dysfunction and how frequently each occur within a team. By surveying team members we have been able to identify the frequency of dysfunction symptoms and thereby identify the key component issue. What does the leader need to do? Law 4 in John Maxwell’s 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork is the Law of Mount Everest As the challenge escalates, the need for teamwork elevates. As the journey grows in difficulty, you can no longer cruise along with ordinary talent and average cooperation. To climb past the obstacles to your dream, you need to have a team of peak performers working in unison and clicking on all cylinders. If your team is facing challenges or you want it to perform better: Your first task is to recognise that it is your responsibility as the leader. It is not the team members’ responsibility nor is it an external consultant’s responsibility to “fix” the team. It starts with you. Use this chart to identify the key symptoms of ineffectiveness your team exhibits and thus which is the critical component that needs work as a priority. There’s a larger version of this on the next page for you to use. Click the Chart for a full-size version and download. In each area, there are common key symptoms. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, just an overview of the top and most frequently uncovered issues in our work with teams: Observe the symptoms of dysfunction that may be present and raise each issue with the whole team. Now is the time you can ask the team to help you fix the issues. Knowing your goals, having the right experience and resources and working together towards satisfying shared values are well known to be important in effective team performance. Shared Situational Awareness and clear communication though is the glue for teams: How you understand my context and situation and we adapt to each new situation as it arises – collaborating to gain those synergies everyone promises. And the key to SSA is open and candid communication. So, back to that overhang when I was tempted to flip over the edge and dive deeper into almost certain death. Why for that moment had my situational awareness switched off? The extra nitrogen I was, by then, carrying in my blood certainly had a part to play, but I've had similar experiences on dry land too. Brief moments, when I've drifted off in my mind, still cognizant of what is going on but in that dream-like state of being so absorbed by one aspect of reality, that the rest of the world is shut off. You've had such moments too. You've driven home with something else filling your mind, arrived and wondered how on earth you managed that without crashing. The time between leaving and arriving is almost a blur. Our brain, powerful as it is, can truthfully only focus on one thing at a time. It has to switch between the multitude of attention demands. Giving each scant attention and given the opportunity, our brain instead of consuming vast amounts of energy switching attention from one part of the environment to another, latches onto one thing, and a sort of relaxed reverie takes over. Our own situational awareness is compromised the moment we become tired. Thus the shared situational awareness in our team is the first thing that becomes compromised in our quest for unity of cohesion and effort.

Few families have produced three such exceptional musical brothers as Percy, Jimmy and Tootie Heath, a bassist, saxophonist and drummer who have worked at the highest level. On one of their last visits to London before Percy's death in 2005, Alyn Shipton talked to all three of them about their collective and individual careers in jazz, introducing not only the finest albums they made together, but their discs with other musicians as varied as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and Wes Montgomery. The Heath Brothers band was a legendary ensemble in jazz from the 1970s to the death of bassist Percy Heath in 2005. All three brothers, Percy, saxophonist Jimmy and drummer Tootie, were masters of their art, and there was a collective magic about their appearances together. But in this programme Percy also talks about his work with Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jimmy remembers his earliest records with John Coltrane when they were fellow members of Dizzy Gillespie's band, and Tootie recalls the thrill of accompanying Wes Montgomery and Dexter Gordon. We also hear their work together on the albums 'Triple Threat' and 'As We Were Saying'.
