"It's Only Rock and Roll" There's a lot to tell about Michael Des Barres, but let's start with the music. In the early '70s, the Sussex-born singer/songwriter fronted the glam rock band Silverhead, who were signed to Deep Purple's label. He decided to try his luck on the West Coast, moving to L.A. and fronting the rock/soul outfit, who were signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records. In '82, Des Barres formed the hard rock band Chequered Past with Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols and Clem Burke of Blondie. That band opened for folks like INXS and Duran Duran and that Duran Duran association proved auspicious as Des Barres was invited by Andy Taylor to replace Robert Palmer as the singer of The Power Station. I know I said Des Barres was a rock and roll chameleon, but at this point he sounds more like a rock and roll shark, doesn't he? He never stops moving. Des Barres fronted The Power Station at Live Aid and along the way he co-wrote "Obsession" with Holly Knight, which became a global hit for Animotion, he put out fabulous solo records, fronted another band called The Mistakes and in 2013 he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the world premiere of 200 Motels: The Suites, by Frank Zappa in which he appeared as Rance, the narrator. We'll get to his new album in a second, but let's talk about his acting first. Des Barres has so many IMDB credits, it's dizzying. Getting his start at age eight, he's appeared in over 100 television shows and close to fifty movies. Let me run through a few because it's nuts: All you '80s kids might remember him in The Ghoulies, but he was in To Sir With Love, Under Siege, and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive and on television he was on Roseanne, Just Shoot Me, Frasier, Seinfeld, St. Elsewhere and MacGyver. Des Barres is a true rock and roll chameleon, because, like a chameleon, he's able to effortlessly change from situation to situation. That subtle shapeshifting quality makes folks like Des Barres able to basically do whatever he wants because he has massive range and can move through the cultural space with otherworldly ease. Des Barres' new album It's Only Rock and Roll is an affectionate tipping of the hat to the songs of the '70s that he loves. From Roxy Music's Love Is The Drug to Sweet's Fox On The Run to the Faces' Stay With Me, this is a scorcher of a record that features Des Barres sounding better than ever--his delivery still has the same muscular pounce and raw elegance and the 12 songs here are delivered with equal parts affection, admiration and grace. And this interview? An absolute blast. www.michaeldebarres.com (http://www.michaeldebarres.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

Crawling out of the swamp to close out Season 3, Eric and Bradford are joined by Broadway actor-musician Matt Saldivar for a rollicking discussion of Neil Jordan's grand guignol ode to undying love. With a cast headed by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as comedy duo Lestat and Louis, interesting turns from Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, and Stephen Rea, Anne Rice adapting her novel, and great effects work by Stan Winston, there's enough baroque to ba-reak the bank... but is it, as one character says, "of the Mississippi"? So... you think you can remake a classic horror movie. That's what Michael Bay thought, anyway, when his production shingle Platinum Dunes embarked on a new adaptation of Jay Anson's tale of mayhem on Long Island. Citizen Kane the 1979 Amityville Horror may not be, but it holds a special place in the hearts of horror fans worldwide. So who's to blame for the mess that is the 2005 version? First (and last) time director Andrew Douglas? Frequently shirtless Ryan Reynolds, miscast as axe-wielding George Lutz? Or screenwriter Scott Kosar, who picks up a surprise nomination this week for the Michael Myers Award? A concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28th and 29th, 1964 which would be released as a concert film called the T.A.M.I. Show.  Free tickets were provided for local high school students to provide the audience.  T.A.M.I. stands for either “Teenage Awards Music International” or “Teen Age Music International,” as both were used by the show's publicity team.  The show included many of the top rock and roll and R&B musicians of the time, including the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Chuck Berry, and The Miracles.  Jan and Dean were the emcees for the event.  Motown Records was represented by three of its biggest acts in the Miracles, Marvin Gay, and the Supremes.  The Rolling Stones were featured as the grand finale.  However, the performance by James Brown and the Famous Flames is perhaps the highlight of the show, as it features his dance moves at the height of his career.  Steve Binder and his personnel from The Steve Allen Show shot the film, and the legendary session musicians of The Wrecking Crew provided most of the instrumentation.  The go-go dancers in the background were choreographed by David Winters and his assistant, a young Toni Basil. This is a difficult film to locate due to copyright disputes on the show over the years.  You'll need to go to YouTube to find the performances.Wayne takes us through this concert footage of the early days of rock and roll. (Here They Come) from All Over the World by Jan and DeanThe film starts with a song from Jan and Dean which is played over the credits.  Jan and Dean co-hosted the concert and contributed this anthem written for the show.  It has a surfing vibe and is easily confused for The Beach Boys who also participated in the concert.Hey Little Bird by The BarbariansThe Barbarians were a precursor to the Punk movement, and their style was called garage rock in the day.  The Barbarians had a one-handed drummer who utilized a drum stick in his left arm with a hook prosthetic.  The group sported a pirate look with leather sandals, open necked shirts, and bloused sleeves.Out of Sight by James Brown and the Famous FlamesMany consider the highlight of the show to be James Brown's performance, as it showcases his dance moves.  The energy shown by Brown and his backing singers clearly influenced future acts like Michael Jackson and Prince.Around and Around by The Rolling StonesWhile the Rolling Stones were the final act, Keith Richards claims that choosing to follow James Brown on stages was the worst decision of their careers, because no matter how well they performed, they couldn't top him.  They performed a cover of Chuck Berry's song - an interesting choice since Berry was also a performer for the concert. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Do the Clam by Elvis Presley (from the motion picture “Girl Happy”)Elvis was making movies at the time, and would almost always be expected to sing songs in the picture. STAFF PICKS:Nowhere to Run by Martha & the VandellasBruce leads off the staff picks with a group which would see a name change to Martha Reeves & the Vandellas later on.  This Motown hit written by the legendary team called Holland-Dozier-Holland went to number 8 on the US charts.  The song is about a woman trapped in a downward spiraling love affair that she just can't give up.Land of 1000 Dances by Cannibal and the HeadhuntersRob features an iteration of a frequently covered song.  Chris Kenner originally recorded it in 1962, but it was more successful as a cover by Cannibal & the Headhunters, going to number 30 on the Billboard chart.  They also added the "na na na na na" hook to the original when front man Frankie Garcia forgot the lyrics.  Sixteen dances are mentioned in the lyrics of the song.Eight Days a Week by The Beatles Lynch brings us an early hit penned by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.  It would be the seventh number one single for the Fab Four in the United States, despite Lennon's feeling that it was a failed attempt at writing a single.  The title is attributed to a statement Ringo Starr made regarding how busy the Beatles were at the time.Satisfied by Lulu and the LuvversWayne wraps up the staff picks with a high energy party song from a Scottish band.  Lulu would go on to a successful solo career that included film songs like "To Sir With Love," and the title song for "The Man with the Golden Gun."  Lulu was 17 at the time this song came out.  She would go on to marry Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Cast Your Fate to the Wind by Sounds OrchestralThis week's podcast ends with an instrumental song

On episode 55, Greg is joined by the iconic and amazingly talented multihyphenate MICHAEL DES BARRES!!!Michael Des Barres' arrival in the entertainment world came early – as a Marquis attending boarding school in England, he first started acting at age eight in commercials and school plays. He later moved on to Corona Theatre School in West London where he was cast in the 1967 classic film To Sir With Love, starring Sidney Poitier. At nineteen, Michael played the androgynous rock star Rose in the nude musical The Dirtiest Show In Town, produced by Robert Stigwood, of Jesus Christ Superstar fame. Andrew Lloyd Webber saw Michael's performance and went backstage to tell Michael that he should indeed form a real rock band. Michael quickly wrote his first song titled “Will You Finance My Rock and Roll Band” which he performed for Lloyd Webber, that song lead Michael to form Silverhead, his first band, a raucous glam rock experiment. They were immediately signed to Purple Records in 1972. In 1974 Michael married his girlfriend of seven years actress Wendy Hamilton (Professor Emeritus Wendy Wheeler, London Metropolitan University). After two albums and two world tours Silverhead disbanded and Michael moved to Los Angeles broke and in love with Pamela Miller "Miss Pamela" of the GTO's, he arrived in L.A. with two hundred dollars and a hair dryer, ending his marriage to Wendy Hamilton. Michael married Pamela Des Barres, author of “I'm With The Band” in 1977. Michael and Pamela amicably divorced in 1991 and have one son, Nicholas Dean Des Barres. In Los Angeles Michael formed the band Detective. Detective was signed to the famed Swan Song Records by Jimmy Page and recorded two albums. That era also saw Michael appear on U.S. television in the sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati with Detective playing the punk rock group Scum of the Earth. Michael's character, Dog was featured throughout the episode and the band itself played at the end of the show. The members of Detective went their separate ways in 1979. Throughout the years of Silverhead and Detective Michael had been struggling with drugs and alcohol and in 1981 he finally got sober and has remained so. "People didn't understand why I didn't drink or do drugs in the 80's, I was a pariah, but I understood that it was for kids. It was making me psychotic and it was destroying my natural energy. It made me listless and uncreative and I thought that was unacceptable. It was more important to be able to look into my son's eyes and be able to connect with him, than it was to look in the eyes of some lower companion with bad coke." As a result of his sobriety he co-founded R.A.D, Rock Against Drugs, a highly successful P.S.A. that helped enthuse the culture of MTV with an anti-drug status. In 1982 Michael formed the band Chequered Past, featuring Steve Jones, Clem Burke, Nigel Harrison and Tony Sales. The band opened for Duran Duran in 1984, it was this association that led to Michael being chosen to replace Robert Palmer as lead singer of The Power Station when Robert Palmer withdrew. Michael performed with The Power Station in Philadelphia at Live Aid before two billion people after a ten day rehearsal. A highlight of the touring set was Michael's song “Obsession, cowritten with Holly Knight in 1983. At the time, it had been released by the L.A. based New Wave group Animotion and was a number one hit in twenty-seven countries. Michael's love of acting had never subsided and in 1985 he was cast in the role most familiar to his fans – that of...

Hollywood legend Sidney Poitier died last week at age of 94. He was a man of many firsts, including the first Black performer to win the best actor Oscar for the 1963 film Lilies of the Field. He was also a humanitarian who was active during the civil rights movement, and also someone who was quite obviously dedicated to his craft. And today we remember Poitier's work, including In The Heat Of The Night and To Sir With Love.

Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Fr. Peter Malone, priest and film critic, based in Australia, who was a foundational figure back when I did my own PhD in the late 1990s. Peter talks about his interest in Christ-figure films, including through the work of Clint Eastwood, and he draws on the distinction between redeemer figures and saviour figures and we find out about his work on anti-Christ figures. He speaks about how these films reveal one's own understanding of Jesus himself and we discuss the evolution of Jesus films. He has been reviewing films since 1968 when he reviewed To Sir With Love and Far From the Madding Crowd, and we learn that Peter has a drive to see every film and he relays how he was once asked ‘Why can't you just watch a film?' We learn how he goes about reviewing a film and how he spent 11 years in London and became part of the London Film Critics Circle. He thought Philip French was one of the most amiable reviewers. Peter asks me if I pay to see a film and he refers to how it's a waste if he goes out and doesn't watch two films in one session. We learn how he goes about writing (or indeed speaking) a review. He often writes discussion questions relating to each film, and Peter explains why he once wrote a letter to each of the films that have influenced him. In the 90s he visited Pacific countries e.g. the Solomon Islands and Fiji which have given him a wider horizon regarding how people appreciate films in different countries, and we learn that for a number of years Peter went to Iran. He tells me what he thinks about the booing and hissing that often takes place at Cannes, and we talk about whether the role of the audience impacts on the way we review a film. He refers also to when he met Martin Scorsese. I ask if studios pay attention to critics' reviews, and our discussion moves on to the Marvel universe. In the 90s he interviewed as many Australian directors as he could, and Peter tells me why directors are more interesting to have conversations with than actors. We also learn how his thoughts on All That Jazz changed on a second viewing, and why The English Patient didn't do anything for him either time he watched it. Then, at the end of the interview, we learn why when people ask him if he is sick of watching films all the time, Peter's answer is ‘Not yet'. And, we discover why Peter cherishes looking back to the past but also looks forward. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Peter Malone and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

In this episode, Ric sits down with New York musician and artist Rew Starr and they talk about the impact a lock down can have on an artist. The good news is that Rew discovered something new about her self and has made her time inside much more bearable by being constructive. Barry Gibb - The Victim (unreleased) (1969)  Jimmy Ruffin & Marcy Levy - Where Do I Go? (1980) His big hit was "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" which was originally intended for The Spinners. He is the older brother of David Ruffin. Marcy Levy was a veteran of the studio by this time. In this show, I talk about her time with Shakespeare's Sister. To little effect.  Marcy Levy & Robin Gibb - Help Me! (1980) From Wikipedia: After working on Jimmy Ruffin's Sunrise (including the track "Where Do I Go", a duet by Ruffin and Marcy Levy) Robin Gibb and Bee Gees keyboardist Blue Weaver work together again by supplying tracks for the soundtrack of the film Times Square. And the result was the song "Help Me!" sung by Levy and Gibb. The song was heard in the film's closing credits. I like the XTC song "Take This Town". I recommend this movie to both of you.  Lulu - Everybody Clap (1971) Trivia question to stump the room. Name a song that includes members of Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Bee Gees, and Stone The Crows.  It's this one.  Lulu — lead vocals Maurice Gibb — guitar, background vocals Leslie Harvey — guitar (Alex Harvey's brother. Look him up for the troubled tale of an ungrounded mic.)  Jack Bruce — bass John Bonham — drums How about that? Lulu was Maurice Gibbs' wife. She had a pretty good solo career in the '60s. Her biggest hit was "To Sir With Love". Yeah! That was the gal that let Maurice touch her all over.  Angela, Ken, and I - Jive Talkin'  Angela, Ken, and I - Run To Me  Angela's Utah Stories The Osmonds - I, I, I (1979) Produced by Maurice Gibb. Maurice Gibb - Modulating Maurice (1969) Gibb was a session musician in Australia for other artists including Bip Addison, Anne Shelton, April Bryon, Barrington Davis, and singer Jon. Around 1969, Gibb worked with his next-door neighbor, Beatle Ringo Starr, and the result was the track "Modulating Maurice" but it was not released. But here it is, for you.  The Bee Gees - Lovers (1976)  Angela, Ken, and I - Stayin' Alive  Angela, Ken, and I - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart  Angela, Ken, and I - Centerpiece  Angela, Ken, and I - How Deep Is Your Love Go to https://www.angelabinghamvoice.com/ Her album is here. She probably doesn't recall doing this show, but I FINALLY got around to downloading it. WHAT FUN we had!  Robin Gibb - Trash (1979)  The Bee Gees - Claustrophobia (1965)  The Bee Gees - She Came In Through The Bathroom Window (1976) Listen for the little piccolo phrase after "And so I quit the police department..." If that doesn't make your insides curl up in terror, I don't know what will. This little pop experiment inadvertently gave birth to the "Sgt. Pepper" movie.  The Fut - Have You Heard The Word? (1969) It's pronounced "foot". "Have You Heard the Word" was recorded on 6 August 1969. That day, Maurice Gibb had broken his arm falling down a flight of stairs. He showed up wearing a cast and shot full of painkillers, and he proceeded to take advantage of the open bar in the studio. Kipner and Groves were not happy with this listless song to begin with, and as the session deteriorated, they left. Maurice put on tape his best John Lennon vocal impression and somehow played bass as well in his distinctive style. Lawrie recalls that he might have been there too, but admits his memory of the late 1960s is none too good. This song was credited to The Fut. Years later, Gibb said that he had no idea how that happened. The record appeared in early 1970, with rumors that this song was one of The Beatles, perhaps a bootleg recording. The recording was so plausible as a Lennon song that Yoko Ono [Ed: Ever the pragmatist] and Lenono Music, cleaning house in 1985, registered a copyright on it as a song written by John Lennon, even though Lennon had earlier denied participation in this song.  Angela, Ken, and I - Massachusetts Frank Lydon - Fonzie Meets Kotter's Sweathogs (At The School Dance) (1976) Angela, Ken, and I - More Than a Woman  Angela, Ken, and I - Night Fever  Angela, Ken, and I - Tragedy  Angela, Ken, and I - Nights on Broadway

In turn that segues into a brief consideration of the transition process and how Trump’s recalcitrance is impacting upon it. Peggy’s focus is on her desire to ski once again, either downhill or cross-country. Shelly is focused on a series of potentially serious family medical issues that have arisen in the past week or so. (And Peggy very much wants to know why she is first hearing about all of this only just now!) Jim is preoccupied by the Top Forty of the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of November 4, 1967 – a countdown topped by his all-time favorite song, To Sir With Love by Lulu. After her Oscar win, Julia slowed down a bit. In addition to the first Ocean's movie, she took a small, scene-stealing part in pal George Clooney's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. But she was clamoring for another go at Oscar glory, so she went the route all respected actors must go at one point or another: an unorthodox teacher whose most important lessons happen outside the classroom. In Mona Lisa Smile, Roberts plays an art history professor who opens the eyes of her students and then, in an emotionally resonant ending... leaves for Europe?  Either which way, she earned $25 million for the part, awards be damned. She followed it up with Mike Nichols' Closer, featuring an ensemble cast of Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Clive Owen. As we saw a few episodes back, in 1965 Peggy Shaw turned in a script called Fashions in Crime, based on the 1948 comics story of the same name, and beset by script elements that would work in a comic but would be tough to film. Shaw's script was apparently handed to writer Stephen Kandel to rework. The resulting 1966 work, The Cat's Tale, solves many of the problems of Shaw's script, in part by totally abandoning it halfway through. Still, it ultimately wasn't used. In this episode, Tim & Paul compare the two scripts & consider whether Kandel's script also had fatal flaws. PLUS: the Ettore Cenci version of Hefti's theme, a correction regarding 8 mm film, a look back on a Batman-branded building that once existed in the Tokyo suburbs as a tie-in to the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton films, another nail in the coffin of the 4th-season myth, and your mail! Darren Barrett’ - Debuts newly released seventh album, “Trumpet Vibes. For the first time in his award-winning career, the trumpeter-composer-producer explores his Jamaican roots on a recording project. Adeptly, the Boston-based artist from Toronto introduces good-time reggae rhythms and frenzied ska beats native to his parents’ Caribbean homeland to hard bop and swinging jazz on the eight-song set that he produced and wrote four new compositions.   A charismatic companion to engage in meaningful discourse and occasionally play foe to his astute trumpet play, Barrett selected the vibraphone to share the spotlight as a featured “voice” throughout the session, with noted vibes soloist Warren Wolf guesting on a pair of tracks to participate in improvisational banter with a young trio comprised of vibist Simon Mouillier and brothers Alexander and Anthony Toth on bass and drums respectively. Also of significance is that Barrett opens the session by saluting his late mentor, trumpet great Donald Byrd, on the chirpy swinger “Fly Little Bird.” Interesting to hear him ply the jazz-meets-reggae motif to pop gems such as the regal “To Sir With Love” and amorous overtures like David Gates’ “Everything I Own” and Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour.” Barrett shines on his own compelling compositions, including the moody and murky “Chiapas”; the deliberate “Song For A Princess,” on which he takes his time – nearly seven minutes - to bop and blow while cruising a laidback island wave; “Phantom dB” that gets a jarring jolt of rock & roll drumming and some dissonant trumpet distortion; and the slightly more conventional straight-ahead jazz foray “The Club Up The Street” that wraps the disc.

Holt was born in Kingston in 1947.  He recorded his first single in 1963 with "I Cried a Tear" for record producer Leslie Kong, and also recorded duets with Alton Ellis. He achieved prominence in his home country as lead singer of The Paragons and they cut a succession of singles for Duke Reid at his Treasure Isle Studio and enjoyed a string of hits, including "Ali Baba", "Tonight", "I See Your Face", and the Holt penned "The Tide Is High" (later made famous by Blondie and also covered by Atomic Kitten). "Wear You to the Ball" was another of his hits with The Paragons, and hit the charts again when U-Roy added a Deejay verse to it. During his time with the Paragons, he also recorded solo material for Studio One (including "Fancy Make-up", "A Love I Can Feel", "Let's Build Our Dreams" and "OK Fred") and Prince Buster ("Oh Girl", and "My Heart Is Gone"). Holt left the Paragons in 1970. By the early 1970s, he was one of the biggest stars of reggae, and his "Stick By Me" was the biggest selling Jamaican record of 1972, one of a number of records recorded with producer Bunny Lee. His 1973 album, Time Is The Master, was successful, with orchestral arrangements recorded in London. The success of the string-laden reggae led to Trojan Records issuing a series of similarly arranged albums produced by Bunny Lee starting with the 1,000 Volts of Holt in 1973, a compilation of Holt's reggae cover versions of popular hits (and later followed by similarly named releases up to 3,000 Volts of Holt). 1,000 Volts spawned the UK Top 10 hit "Help Me Make It Through the Night" (written by Kris Kristofferson), which peaked at number 6,[2] and included covers of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" and "Touch Me in the Morning" by Diana Ross. http://en.wikipedia.org

To hear her name, is to bring back so many memories. If you grew up in the 1960's you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing Shout, To Sir With Love, Boom,Bang-A-Bang or the James Bond Soundtrack, The Man With The Golden Gun. Lulu is a Scottish singer who was born in Glasgow. At the very tender age of 15 she was signed to Decca Records, and the rest is history. I was curious about what she thought made her turn out so normal, when so many other young, teenage stars, somehow go wayward, and end up dead or really messed up. She had an interesting answer. She has appeared on stage in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Song and Dance", as well as the Royal National Theatre's "Guys and Dolls." , she has hosted her own television program, "Happening For Lulu", and hosted a radio show on Capitol Radio, she continues to tour and make beautiful music too. If you're lucky you'll catch her on QVC, she's proudly can say she is 65 years old and looks 35. QVC markets her beauty regimen. Fun lady to talk to about her crazy life in the biz, her loves, The Beatles, the Bee Gees and lots of other nuggets of info.
