Not the shoes, the 1992 hidden gem that kind of snuck by, starring Robert Redford, Ben Kingsley, Dan Aykroyd, Sydney Poitier, May MacDonnell, and River Phoenix, just to name a few. Why haven't you seen it yet? And if you have, why haven't you listened to the episode yet?
You'll quickly learn why bringing this conversation with the legendary Willie D. Burton to you is such an incredible honor. History-making, Willie's the first Black person to ever win an Academy Award for Best Sound. It was for 1988's Bird, a biopic about the life of jazz musician Charlie Parker. In 2006, he won a second Academy Award for Dreamgirls, joining an elite club of African Americans in Hollywood who are multiple Oscar Award winners. We talk about how, at an early age, walking past a radio station ignited an interest in audio after he took a peek inside. Truly immersing himself in electronics through a school program, he graduated high school. Leaving his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama with $50 in his pocket, he relocated to Long Beach, California, later becoming a sonar technician in the Navy. About three years later, he began to pursue a career in audio. After amassing some work experience in sound, Willie shares a truly remarkable story about the time Sydney Poitier took a big chance on him for what would become Willie's first time working on a feature without having any prior feature credits to his name. Now, having worked on over 140 film and television projects, Willie's earned a total of 8 Academy Award nominations. They include The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and most recently, Oppenheimer. Willie's stories about working on the epic Oppenheimer movie with director Christopher Nolan provide a unique insight into their collaboration and technological approach to sound. Willie shares some great advice as well as his thoughts on the ever-evolving film industry and the power of following one's intuition in choosing projects. His latest, Captain America: Brave New World, premieres in 2025. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/postinblack/support

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Sanford K. Sanford, Son of Isabel Sanford, Star of “The Jeffersons” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Sanford K. Sanford, is the son of one of the most popular and beloved stars in the history of television, Isabel Sanford, whose portrayal of Louise Jefferson – or “Weezy”, as we came to know her – first on “All in the Family”, and then for 11 seasons on “The Jeffersons”, made her a household name. After a distinguished career on the stage, she landed the role of “Tillie” in the classic 1967 movie, “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner”, opposite Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and Sydney Poitier. From there, she was cast as Louise Jefferson, next door neighbour to “the Bunkers” on the groundbreaking TV show, “All in the Family”. And THAT led to the incredibly successful spinoff, “The Jeffersons”. Isabel Sanford received 7 Emmy Award nominations, and WON an Emmy in 1981, making her the first and still the only African American woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. She was also nominated for 5 Golden Globe Awards. She won TWO NAACP Image Awards, and in 1981 she won a Genie Award from the American Women in Radio and Television Association. And in 1985 she received an Honorary Doctorate from Emerson College. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And in 2004, she and her co-star Sherman Hemsley, won a TV Land Award for Favourite Cantankerous Couple. Our guest has written a wonderful, heartwarming book, entited, “Her Fans Call Her Weezy But I Call Her Mom”, in which he shares many poignant and life-altering moments with his beloved Mama, and allows us to get to know the real person behind the beloved actress – a courageous single mother of 3 children who, despite many challenges in her life, showed remarkable determination and remained focused on becoming a successful actress. Our guest has had a successful music career as a percussionist, and he's worked with Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye, Johnny Guitar Watson, Bobby Womack, Cuba Gooding Sr. and The Main Ingredient. Legendary actor Glynn Turman remembers a time when hardly any Black men or women were prominently featured in television. Over six decades later, he's played hundreds of characters in film, TV and on-stage, including work as an acclaimed writer, producer and director – both in theater and television. Notable roles include the 2020 Netflix film, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom; the FX drama series, FARGO; more recently, the Paramount sports comedy, 80 for Brady, and an upcoming biographical film, Rustin, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground. His acting career started as a 12-year-old, when friend of the family—esteemed playwright, Lorraine Hansberry—asked permission from his mother to star alongside Sydney Poitier, Louis Gosset Jr. and Ruby Dee in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun. But it was his movie role in 1975's Cooley High, that he admits to I SEE U of his defining moment as an actor. Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats candidly with celebrated actor, Glynn Turman. The Emmy Award winner will share riveting stories and narratives of how he's managed longevity in the industry. Turman will also offer up a preview of his new documentary, his love and passion for horses as well as his fondest memory of being married to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
You can't have Revenge Month and not cover a Quentin Tarantino movie. His half of the Grindhouse double-bill, Death Proof, is a throwback to an era of B-level filmmaking that perhaps QT and Robert Rodriguez admire more than audiences did. After all, this was the rare QT box-office bomb. Even he admits it's his worst movie. Still, that car chase is a masterpiece of stunt-work. Real-life stuntwoman-turned-actress Zoe Bell just did what she does anyway...risk her life for the shot in spectacular ways. Sydney Poitier in the first half of Death Proof and then Rosario Dawson in the second half are both hot & cool, but this flick belongs to a malevolent Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike. Is he a stand-in for his director? We discuss. The short of it is, Tarantino's flick remains entertaining and very watchable, despite some horrifying decisions made by the lady "heroes". Well, baby, it's you, so burn rubber to save your life, then drive like a maniac to get some payback as Have You Ever Seen's 505th episode covers the car-chase side of Grindhouse. Well, Actually: It's Tura Satana in Faster Pussycat Kill Kill, not Tura SANtana. Also, Marley Shelton plays a doctor in the Grindhouse twosome, not a nurse. Also also, it's Fred Raskin---not Raksin---who became QT's editor. If you drink coffee and you want something better than you're currently getting, try Sparkplug Coffee. I knew that there was a power I had when I stripped off my shirt and looked you in the eye as I moved my hips. But I also knew the other side of that attraction to me was the impulse to kill me. Legendary dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones has made a career of engaging his audience with brutal, unapologetic honesty. His seductive work has grappled with provocative political issues ranging from sexuality, race, and censorship to power and the AIDS epidemic — while also innovating in the expressive possibilities of movement itself. In this episode, Jones talks about what it meant to grow up as a “Black Yankee” in the 1950s and 1960s and as one of 12 children. He also reflects on the adjacency of violence to the power of seduction, and how, after decades as a performing artist, the body may retire but the mind never will. Uh oh. It's a movie based on a play. Can the screen presences of Hollywood legends Sydney Poitier and Ruby Dee possibly transcend this stage-to-screen adaptation that only adds a couple of quick cut-away scenes of a single alternative setting to an otherwise one-room story? Well… yes. Pretty easily, it turns out. If you'd like to watch ahead for next week's film, we will be discussing and reviewing Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922).
Sidney had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where cast and talent came out to show their support for the Poitier family. Red carpet appearances included: Oprah Winfrey, Sherri Poitier, Pamela Poitier, Anika Poitier, Sydney Poitier, Sherri Poitier, Beverly Poitier- Henderson, and Reginald Hudlin. All came together with one thing on their minds, love. Oprah said when discussing content for the film, everyone came together. Oprah said they never spoke about being "trailblazers" but about the cosmos, life, struggle,s and more. Meanwhile, Sherri Poitier said she surprised her family and came together in the spirit of love that her dad would have wanted. She said he was about love, giving it to the world, and the world giving it back to him. Listen to hear the rest of the family and attendees talk about the importance of this film while honoring Sidney Poitier. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Marianna Randazzo Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Sidney Poitier was one of the most gifted and charismatic actors the cinema has known. This sweeping documentary crafts a richly detailed portrait, surveying Poitier's films, life story, and litany of accomplishments as an artist and activist who forever changed what it means to be Black in America. Poitier's own words provide the narration, telling the story of a boy born to tomato farmers in the Bahamas. Moving to the US at age 15, he quickly learned the brutal realities of the Jim Crow era but also found his passion for acting. Director Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang, Marshall) weaves together a rich mix of archive footage and contemporary interviews with a stellar group of interview subjects — from the late cultural critic Greg Tate to Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, and Oprah Winfrey (also producer of the film). Poitier's contemporaries and the holders of his legacy detail just how extraordinary his rise was, from early failure at the American Negro Theater to Oscar-nominated roles in films like The Defiant Ones, to becoming the living, big-screen embodiment of America's hopes for racial justice. Poitier's rise to stardom occurred in tandem with his commitment to social change, marching for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. alongside his lifelong friend Harry Belafonte, and helping to usher Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, a milestone in portraying Black American experience, from Broadway to the big screen. By the mid-1960s Poitier was everywhere. In 1967 alone he made Guess Who's Coming to Dinner; To Sir, With Love; and In the Heat of the Night. Watching signature scenes from his films, getting a glimpse of rare footage from his life beyond Hollywood, and seeing how pivotal his life and example has been for so many of today's icons, it's clear that there never was and never can be a figure quite like Sidney Poitier. This film serves as a beautiful, powerful testament. *The film is currently screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. YOU - The Master Entrepreneur - A Guide to True Greatness with Stan Hustad
Indeed it's a feel-good story and give me just a few minutes to give a little obituary about the extraordinary life of the great American actor Sydney Poitier who passed away at the age of 94 this past Friday. The story is inspiring but what made him famous is that he learned to do something very important, and he did it. And you will discover that it is something that you need to do to if you want to make your mark in the marketplace today. So join me.
Bobby, Griff, and The Rik start out on a somber note paying tribute to 2 lost legends, Bob Saget and Sydney Poitier. Once the sad stuff is out of the way, they get down to the dirty, and talk jarred farts, the Pope being a dick, a little NFL, a little Marvel, and the 90's fest line up. Finally we watch the horror short, Snake Dick, and offer our comments on it! Come on in, and get yourself Effin' Cultured!
Buffalo Springfield was a fusion of Canadian and American musicians, and was also a fusion of folk, country, and psychedelic rock. The band lineup included Canadians Neil Young, Bruce Palmer, and Dewey Martin, and Americans Stephen Stills and Richie Furay. While their debut album was recorded quickly, their second album, Buffalo Springfield Again, would be recorded over a period of nine months. This was due to Young frequently departing from the band, and to bassist Bruce Palmer being deported and having to sneak into the country illegally to record the album.Young and Stills had met in 1965 in Ontario. Stills was forming a band in Los Angeles with Richie Furay. After a band breakup in Toronto, Young and Palmer went in search of Stills, driving from Canada to Los Angeles in a hearse. After searching for a couple of weeks, the four met up in LA traffic. Dewey Martin from the Standells was added as drummer. The group gets its name from a steam-driven manufacturing machine made by the Buffalo Springfield Roller Company. Buffalo Springfield would break up in 1968 after one more album, with the band members going on to other projects. Stephen Stills and Neil Young would both appear in Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Richie Furay would go on to form the group Poco. Of course Neil Young would have a solo career as well. We hope you enjoy this album, one of the founding albums of the West Coast psychedelic sound. BluebirdStephen Stills wrote this multi-part song, and Neil Young is on lead guitar. Stills wrote this song about his girlfriend, and is on lead vocals. The jam in the center of the song is a duet with Stephen Stills on acoustic guitar and Neil Young on electric guitar. You can hear the prototype of the sound that would soon become Crosby, Stills and Nash in this song. Mr. SoulNeil Young wrote this track about his ambivalent-to-negative feelings about rock stardom. While it is one of the more famous songs off this album, it was originally released as the B-side to "Bluebird." Neil Young would record this later as a solo artist in 1982.Good Time BoyRichie Furay wrote this deeper cut. This has a funky, soul sound, reminiscent of James Brown. "Sock it to me now, groove it on me now, lay it on me now."Rock & Roll WomanIf this sounds even more like Crosby, Stills, and Nash than the others, there's a reason for it. Neil Young did not play on this track, and David Crosby was brought in to sing backing vocals. The rock and roll woman referenced in this song is Grace Slick. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Bare Necessities (from the animated film "Jungle Book")Disney's animated take on Rudyard Kipling's book would be released this month. It was the last film to be produced by Walt Disney, who died during its production. STAFF PICKS:Ode to Billie Joe by Bobbie GentryRob starts the staff picks with a story telling song. This gothic tale is about a family discussion of Billy Joe Mcallister, who had committed suicide. Gentry said that the song is about indifference to suffering of others, and was inspired by the murder of Emmitt Till. In the Heat of the Night by Ray CharlesBrian's staff pick is the theme from the motion picture of the same name starring Sydney Poitier. The score for the movie was created by Quincey Jones, who also composed the song. Marilyn and Alan Bergman wrote the song for the film to have a backwoods gospel feel. Lonely Drifter by Pieces of EightBruce brings us some Carolina beach music. Originally recorded by The O'Jays in 1963, Pieces of Eight would record this and hit the charts as a one-hit wonder. The group was formed when Raleigh based group The Tassels joined with two of the Greenwood, South Carolina band The Swinging Medallions. The name comes from the group being an 8-piece band.My White Bicycle by TomorrowWayne closes out the staff picks with a psychedelic one-hit wonder. The guitarist on this is Steve Howe, who would later be a member of the band Yes. The reference to "white bicycle" was inspired by an early sharing program in Amsterdam where bicycles were painted white and provided to the public for free use. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Title 15 by the Rolling StonesWe close with an instrumental song off the Stones album "Their Satanic Magesties Request."

In this episode, we chat about why Tony became an actor, a terrible frost bite that almost left Tony's hands permanently damaged, and my favorite 80's TV show Hunter; where Tony had a recurring role. Then we move on to some more recent projects; including the Showtime drama Yellowjackets, and the new film National Champions released Nov 24th, 2021. Tony shares a wonderfully charming story about working with the great Sydney Poitier, and a hilarious story about working with legend James Earl Jones! Lisa has chosen the 1967 British classic “To Sir, With Love” starring the ever-wonderful Sydney Poitier. Does this film still hold a place in their hearts?

You have to understand Sydney Poitier’s journey to appreciate his perspective on progress.
In this episode, Mike makes his way down the east coast of Florida, from Amelia Island all the way to the Dry Tortugas to bring you stories from The Sunshine State. The episode starts with the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd and their meteoric rise from Jacksonville backyard band to super stardom, and how it all came crashing down in 1977. Next you’ll hear the fascinating tale of Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, the fort at the end of the end of the world for those who lived there. During the Guilded Age, feathers were more valuable than gold, a fact which sparked off what we call the Plumage Wars between feather hunters and environmentalists. That story is up next. Then you’ll hear the fascinating biography of Miami-born Sydney Poitier, Hollywood’s first black leading man. Finally comes the tragic story of the Groveland 4, four young black men tried for a crime they didn’t commit back in 1949. Music for this episode comes from Florida based singer-songwriter Laney Jones. To find out more, visit my website at www.miles2gobeforeisleep.com.
Sydney Poitier historian and all-around cinematic raconteur Ben Goff (@benjaminygoff) joins us on a very special episode of our AFI Countdown Series to discuss the 1960s, race relations, and how Norman Jewison's IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT factored into both.
Ralph Nelson directed and also played a supporting role in this adaptation of "Lillies of the Field" a novel by William E. Barrett. The movie stars the incomparable Sydney Poitier who won the Academy Award for his role in the movie. Lilia Skala, Stanley Adams and a ensemble of excellent actors round out the cast. A simple story belies a complex character study. There are many wonderful small moments in the film. The dialog is sharp and witty when needed and at times profound in unexpected ways.

Host Robert Ortegon chose this movie, and host Beau Maddox joins him as they discuss the amazing camerawork and stunt driving, delve into the character development and dynamics between both groups of women, explain the technical aspects of the vehicles used in the movie, tackle Tarantino's idiosyncratic writing style, and try to determine where everything went wrong with the critical/audience reception to the film. The room is set for controversy when Mario Bernardi returns in this episode of Back to the Balcony to decide if Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is really a classic. Jimmy's not sure but he does agree Sydney Poitier is dreamy.
Springtime, It happens every Salem and "The Marlboro Man", were regular slogans on TV as cigarette ads were still allowed. 8-track tapes were new to the land and the Empire State residents were concerned that the new World Trade Center, would block and disrupt TV signals. Jimmy Hendrix, makes his debut at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go. Chuck Berris, added "The Family Game" to his existing stable of "The Dating Game" and "The Newlywed Game"--all precursors to the best game show of all time: "The Gong Show"! Over 75% of African American homes had at least one of these items: Jet Magazine, Ebony Magazine, a James Brown Record or an Aretha Franklin record. If you were at the movies you were checking out Sydney Poitier with, "To Sir With Love" with a Lulu of a song or were hanging out "Barefoot in the Park" with Cat Ballou who was soon to be "Hanoi Jane" and later a fitness guru and Mrs. Ted Turner!
On this day in 1964, Sydney Poitier won the Academy Award for best actor— becoming the first African-American to do so. The film was Lilies of the Field, and on today's "A Classical Day in the Life", we explore the musical side of the film.
It’s an uncomfortable topic to talk about, especially for men, but there’s more to prostate cancer than you think – and women should know about it too. With a little education and forethought, you could be saving your life or the life of your loved one. It doesn’t come out of nowhere. Experts say prostate cancer builds over decades, then strikes men in their 40s, 50s, or older. It’s a highly curable disease, but often men tend to drag their feet until their wives or girlfriends nudge them to go and get checked out, or when they are forced by symptoms. On our podcast this week: What you should know that could save your life. We interview Atlanta urologist Dr. James Bennett. He’s working to raise awareness, with an emphasis on detection and prevention. Who Is He? James K. Bennett, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Bennett is a Georgia native whose enthusiasm for medicine began at Clark College in 1976 where he graduated summa cum laude. After receiving his medical degree from Duke University in 1979, Dr. Bennett attended Emory University, where he completed an internship in surgery and a residency in urology. His enthusiasm continues today through the establishment of a urology practice providing quality health care. Honored as the National Medical Association Practitioner of the Year in 1999 and recipient of the Nash-Carter award in 2014, Dr. Bennett is an activist in the treatment and education of prostate cancer. He was the first Georgia urologist to perform cryosurgical ablation of the prostate. He also created an educational film featuring Dr. Louis Sullivan entitled “Prostate Cancer in Black Men,” which has been used nationwide by the American Cancer Society. Dr. Bennett’s video credits include “The Next River to Cross,” narrated by Les Brown, as well as, “Prostate Cancer,” which was narrated by Sydney Poitier.
