In this throwback episode from April of 2021 we're talking with Nappy Nina about her latest project "Double Down" which was fully produced by JWords. Nina also shares some of her early influences and talks about her relocation from Oakland to Brooklyn. Then she helps us dive into one her favorite albums - Isaiah Rashad's sophomore effort "The Sun's Tirade".
This week, we are recapping our experience attending History Of The Bay, an event organized by fellow Bay Area hip-hop podcaster Dregs One. While it did not result in any usable interviews, DBRP co-hosts David Ma and Nate LeBlanc were glad to spend an afternoon immersed in the Bay Area's unique musical culture and to see performances from rappers such as Rappin' 4-Tay, B-Legit, and Kamaiyah. For this week's interview, DBRP host Demone Carter caught up with recurring guest and brilliant rapper Nappy Nina. Getting to know Nina and watching her level up her career has been one of the highlights of creating our show. We have been checking in with her in person and online for the past few years, and we are excited about her new collaborative project with producer Swarvy Nothing Is My Favorite Thing, out now. Dad Bod Rap Pod is produced by Demone Carter. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Brought to you by the good homies at Stony Island Audio

A mix by Joseph Sannicandro (@thenewobjective) that will be played at Cinema Politica (www.cinemapolitica.org) screenings as people gather for the projection. Below is the track listing: Soundtrack Politica mix by @thenewobjective Accompanying image from the documentary: Whose Streets? https://www.cinemapolitica.org/film/whose-streets Two things I love: hip hop and soundtrack music. More specifically, New York hip hop and Italian soundtrack music, which form the basis of most of this mix (with a few west coast tracks thrown in for good measure). In recent years there's been a newfound appreciation for soundtracks and library music, but hip hop producers have been digging those gems for decades. MCs are amongst the best contemporary storytellers, though they don't often get enough recognition in that respect. And in my opinion, we have been witnessing a new golden age in New York hip hop, so I've mostly selected songs released in the last few years to highlight the excellent work being done today. There are a good number of instrumental cuts here, but where there are rhymes they often have political and spiritual significance that might resonate with the films screened at Cinema Politica. I also aimed for close to gender balance on the voices heard on this mix. I gravitated towards tracks that tell a story and tracks that sample soundtracks, and tie it all together with a few choice cuts from soundtracks themselves. JusMoni & Nappy Nina - Henny Lavender a 2023 self-released single. If you feel like you just saw a Song of the Day feature from Seattle-based singer/songwriter JusMoni and Oakland-born/Brooklyn-based emcee Nappy Nina, it's because you did. Earlier this week, we shared the song “Prayer Hands” off Nappy Nina's latest album Morning Due and today we're sharing another collaboration between the two artists, “Henny Lavender.” Released in February alongside the drop of an exclusive candle and clothing collab with the fashion retailer and creative agency Paradice Avenue Souf, the song is dripping with erotic sensuality. While “Prayer Hands” leaned on Nappy Nina's dexterous rhymes with JusMoni adding gorgeous vocal flourishes, “Henny Lavender” is a true collaboration. Backed by a sexy synth slow jam beat produced by 104Rog, JusMoni coos while Nappy Nina flows about their belief in love and desire for the carnal aspects of it. Nappy Nina - "Prayer Posture (feat. JusMoni)" from the 2023 album Mourning Due on LucidHaus. On her latest LP Mourning Due, Nappy Nina, as she puts it, "considers grief a currency and questions who is owed what." The Oakland-born/Brooklyn-based artist delivers vulnerable lyrics in her distinctive rapid-fire style, like a conversation with a friend who's had too many cups of coffee. Mourning Due features a plethora of guests, including Moor Mother, Mavi, lojii, maassai, Cavalier, Stas Thee Boss, and on today's Song of the Day, JusMoni. The track is produced by Nina's frequent collaborator, Nelson Bandela. "Prayer Posture" explores the uncertainty of life. As Nina raps "Shit won't last on some quarter notes / I may laugh but I'm hoarding hope and reading my homies' horoscopes," JusMoni coos in a following line, "I feel like the worlds on fire / none of us know how to swim." It's a relatable emotion, that resonates throughout the whole reflective album. The glory days of this podcast have coincided with a global pandemic and as such recording the show via zoom has become the order of the day, It's a great way to connect with interesting people across town and across the globe for sure. All that said there is nothing like face to face interaction. This week we got a live in-real-life interview with one of our favorite humans, Nappy Nina. This is her third apperance on the pod and we definitely consider ourselves boosters of everything she does. Nate and Demone gathered in Dem's living room to talk to Nina about her new album Mourning Due, potential retirement, and being buried alive in the Sahara (true story). Good times were had by all! This interview is not to be missed. During the Side A intro segment we mourn the sudden and tragic passing of Dave aka Plug 2 aka Trugoy from De La Soul. Given what De La means to us this passing was absolutely devastating. We do our best to process grief and uplift Dave's legacy. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). The Interview (2:54). Experts have said recently our society is in a “general crisis”, which means that we are not just dealing with economic crises, ecological crises, political crises… but many types of crises occurring at the exact same time. So needless to say, music that speaks to the emotional and mental effects of these times has been really connecting with me in recent years. Today's guest, Oakland's Nappy Nina, is a rising star who blends thoughtful empathetic subject matter with raps that defy the conventional. She exudes a level of cool and calm that embodies the long lineage of smooth west coast rap greats that preceded her, and a technical ability that brings this buttery soft delivery to new and exciting places. This element of freshness can be seen in the danceable rap grooves on 2021's collaborative album with JWords, Double Down, and the soulful vibrant sounding Mourning Due, the upcoming release from Nappy Nina slated to drop on February 17th. Listen on to hear about her unique artistic background, her general approach to writing, and stay tuned for a sneak peek into what this new album Mourning Due will sound like. Nina's poetry background (3:53). Nina's eclectic taste in production, and her beat selection process (9:45). How Nina grew as a rapper creating Double Down (11:42). This episode was originally part of the "Rightnowish: Musicians to Know" series from 2021. We're revisiting it as a part of our 2023 kickoff series highlighting some of the best stories from our archives. Nappy Nina is a lyricist with a smooth-sultry delivery that's almost jazz-like, especially when coupled with some signature boom-bap production. In her songs, she raps about breakups, missing Oakland, the disappointing produce in Brooklyn, and navigating rough financial waters. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Moor Mother - "Made A Circle (feat. Nappy Nina, Maassai, Antonia Gabriela & Orion Sun)" from the 2021 album Black Encyclopedia of the Air on Moor Mother / Anti. While she couldn't physically engage with fellow artists during the pandemic, Moor Mother was able to virtually invite them to her latest LP, Black Encyclopedia Of The Air, out now via Anti- Records. The poet, artist, and musician — whose real name is Camae Ayewa — utilized more than 100 instrumentals from long-time collaborator Swedish producer Olof Melander, inviting vocals from artists lojii, Elucid, Brother May, Bfly, Yatta, Black Quantum Futurism, Elaine Mitchner, and Dudu Kouate, and on today's Song of the Day, Nappy Nina, Maassai, Antonia Gabriela, and Orion Sun. "Collaboration to me is just community," she toldThe Fader. `"I love being a solo artist, and I love to really dwell in that. Of course, I've always been into multiple genres. Like right now, I'd like to create some small chamber orchestra, but they would play my music. I'm more into that now trying to create some sort of small orchestra, as far as collaboration. But collaboration to me is community, and it's very accidental. You're just hanging out with your friend. Your friends are talented. It's all about seeing how talented your community is. Then collaboration is very easy. So it's not like I'm out here seeking to collaborate with people, it's just how it happens through community."
