WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA?"CHAMELEON"  by Maynard Ferguson (Columbia, 1974)I admit that I'm woefully unequipped to discuss Big Band music, or any Jazz for that matter, in great detail. Although, throughout my life I've developed a passion for the odd jazz master here and there, and as a matter of personal pride I've always strived to be conversant in the subject, at the very least. However, the trumpeter Maynard Ferguson was a blank slate for me. So, when combing through my 8 tracks and I stumbled upon this cart, I decided to give it a spin. This record depicts big band music at that cusp of time when it was struggling for relevance. Doc Severinson, Johnny Carson's band leader, (another trumpet player), played what seemed comically bloated and old fashioned - my parent's music. Maynard Ferguson was Doc's contemporary who played with him in Charlie Barnet's band in the late 40's, and he carried the big band flag all the way to his death in 2006 at the age of 78. When he made Chameleon in '74 he was 46 - still vital and searching for a key to the mystic highway. The covers of Paul McCartney's Jet, the titular funk track by Herbie Hancock, and the sprawling Livin' for the City by Stevie Wonder all testify to this cool Quebecois's questing versatility. And it's good stuff - lustily orchestrated and delivered. As his obit in the Washington Post described Mr. Ferguson's high register wailing: he was: “…. A gladiator, a combat soldier, a prize fighter, a circus strongman…” Now here's where the story gets weird and interesting for me: In 1963, Maynard brought his family to live with Timothy Leary and Ram Dass at their compound in Hitchcock Estates and lived there for three years, recording and taking psychedelics. Then, he went to India and taught Krishnamurti at the Rishi Valley School. And, he always attributed his ability to hit and sustain those high notes from his Yogic breath control. This turned my perception of this artist's output on its head. Directed by Norman Jewison from a screenplay by Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson, ...And Justice For All stars Jack Warden, John Forsythe, and Pacino, with strong supporting turns from Lee Strasberg, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Lahti, and Craig T. Nelson. Arthur Kirkland is a passionate young lawyer whose pursuit of true justice, especially for society's cast-offs, puts him at odds with the powers that be - particularly the ruthless Judge Henry T. Fleming, whose strict adherence to the letter of the law is keeping one of Kirkland's clients behind bars far longer than his crime deserves. As he deals with numerous other struggles, including his grandfather's decline into dementia, a colleague's mental breakdown, and another client's tragic reaction to a prison sentence, Kirkland is drawn, against his will, into the defense of Judge Fleming himself, who has been accused of rape. Will Kirkland's sense of duty compel him to provide a sound defense of his nemesis, or will his strong moral compass lead him down a path that is incompatible with his responsibility as an attorney? 9-time Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton has received a “Best Jazz Vocal Album” Grammy nod for every project she has released in the last decade. Known for her impeccable voice and imaginative treatments of The Great American Songbook, Tierney is heralded for her abilities as both a jazz storyteller and her ability to use her voice as an instrument.  In our conversation, we talk about her newest album, Paris Sessions II, released on May 6. It's a rich collaboration with her husband, classically-trained guitarist Serge Merlaud, and the two take their musical connection to even deeper levels through songs dedicated to the late songwriter Marilyn Bergman. Paris Sessions 2 was recorded during lockdown at L. A. 's Tritone Studios. Acoustic bass guitarist Kevin Axt, a member of the Tierney Sutton Band since 2005 and a key component of the first Paris Sessions, came back on board for Paris Sessions 2, providing resounding bass lines and all-important chordal work behind Merlaud's lyrical guitar solos. Legendary flutist Hubert Laws, who recorded remotely from his home studio, blends beautifully with Sutton's crystalline voice on five songs. Michael Major of “Broadway World” said it best. “Sutton has continued to weave her spell with a combination of pure, pristine vocals, emotional honesty and striking reinventions of familiar tunes. That spell is very much intact on Paris Sessions 2.” We agree

It was for the 1982 blockbuster film of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg. Composed by John Williams, and the album was narrated by Michael Jackson, produced by composer Quincy Jones and distributed by MCA Records. Where I'm from, not many people have heard of the E.T. Album. I'm not sure if that many were sold at the time. I was lucky to see and buy the album. My favorite part of the album was hearing MJ sing, Someone In The Dark. At the time in the 80's, not many people I know heard the song. I'll sing a few lines. (Singing)I use to listen to Michael Jackson and sing along with him singing the song, Someone In the Dark. I could sing better in the past. I was a lot younger then, and was practicing more. Michael's voice sounded so angelic to me in singing a song. He had a sweet sounding voice. (Singing) He had a way of singing his words and expressing himself. When I heard Michael singing, Someone In The Dark, I was touched and felt some loneliness in my life just like he did. I think we all do sometimes. The song was written by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman and was composed by Rod Temperton.I'm Gail Nobles. You're listening to Sound Flave (Radiae Applis).

And certainly my conversation with the legendary Alan Bergman fits in that category. At 95, he was able to offer incredible wisdom and stories that are a must-hear for younger generations. He shares the secret to movie scoring, how Fred Astaire made an exception for him, Frank Sinatra's nickname for him, the unusual prompt that led him to “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?,” which comes first: the lyrics or the music, the secret to his long-lasting partnership with his wife, Marilyn Bergman, how the idea for Something More! Came about, his musical influences growing up, and the two books every young songwriter must read. Plus: Norman Lear, Barbra Streisand, Michel LeGrand, and more!

How exciting to go straight from Black History Month to Women’s History Month! Over the course of this coming month, I am going to feature programs on my favoritest singers of all time! For the first episode, I break with normal Countermelody protocol and feature the quintessential pop singer, Dusty Springfield, whose career spanned the early 1960s through the mid-1990s. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to do an all-Dusty episode and since this past week was the 22nd anniversary of her premature death at the age of 59 of cancer, the time seemed right to present her to my listeners in all her eclectic glory. Because we are celebrating women this month, I decided to present Dusty singing material exclusively by female composers and lyricists, including all of extant recordings of songs by the great Carole King, most in collaboration with her longtime songwriting partner, the late Gerry Goffin. Other songwriters represented include Janis Ian, Karla Bonoff, Scherrie Payne, Norma Tanega, and Carole Pope; lyricists include Dorothy Fields and Marilyn Bergman, and vocal guest stars include Tom Jones and Martha Reeves and The Vandellas. This week’s bonus episode, available to Patreon subscribers, features further Dusty performances, both live and studio. Come and let me guide you through the glory of All Things Dusty! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Though the movie and score for "The Terminal" might seem like a blip on the radar, neither Steven Spielberg nor John Williams approached this film any less seriously than their major successes. The story marks Tom Hanks' third film with Spielberg, as an Eastern European man stuck in the JFK airport for nine months. Williams supplies a wonderfully light theme for Viktor, as well as a lyrical love theme that host Jeff Commings believes could have been turned into a beautiful love song by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey

We've approached a new chapter in John Williams' career: the post-Golden Age era when the films he chose were not always of superior quality but still gave him the chance to write mostly memorable music. Host Jeff Commings is joined for the third time by Gianmaria Caschetto to discuss the breezy score to "Sabrina" that gave Williams the opportunity to reach back into his jazz roots, as well as his romantic comedy score past from the 1960s. He collaborated with lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman for two original songs for the film, one of which was nominated for an Academy Award and bears a resemblance to a previous song the three wrote together. Caschetto provides some insight into Williams' composition of Sabrina's theme and the foreboding undertones playing underneath the piano. And it's none other than the Maestro himself tickling the ivories for part of the score, offering us the opportunity to marvel at Williams' mastery at the piano.

Last year, the Academy championed a film that explicitly whitewashed Southern racism by centering an amazing black story on his white chauffeur. It’s not the first time they would do this, and it certainly won’t be the last. But the bitter taste that Green Book left has colored most films dealing with racism and the South that we’ve viewed since then. Enter a breath of fresh air this week, with a movie that doesn’t try to hide the evil, pervasive nature of racism and Jim Crow. It’s not perfect, and it pulls its punches strategically, but it’s light years ahead of what Hollywood often accepts as commentary on racism. Perhaps it’s the crackling, tense energy of Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger that elevates the film, but it might just be how honest and raw the movie feels. Literally, this is now our worst rated film of all time, and it’s not even close. The entire production was a fiasco of epic proportions, and that’s before Rex Harrison’s complete and utter lack of energy in the role. The two-time Grammy nominee Eric Clapton called “one of the great singer-songwriters” joins us to talk about everything from his 1970s classic "On and On" to writing hits like the Oscar-winning “Separate Lives” for Phil Collins, to the unexpected rootsy influences on his new album, We’ll Talk About It Later In The Car.   EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE  Scott and Paul catch up after their respective travels to New York and Italy; the new 10-CD Bakersfield Sound box set Scott produced; the winner of our Lamont Dozier contest; and instructions about our listeners' final chance to enter to win a copy of Marty Stuart's new coffee table book.  PART TWO - 6:49 mark Stephen Bishop comes by Songcraft World Headquarters to talk about the TV theme song that first made him pay attention to music; why his stepdad forbid him from playing guitar in the house; the days he faked a British accent to try to get ahead in the music business; how his friendship with Mama Cass's sister led to his big career break.; the time he fooled Quincy Jones by imitating a trombone with his mouth; how his best-known song was born from a single chord he couldn't stop playing; why he didn't like Barbra Streisand's version of his song; how he ended up getting his guitar smashed in Animal House; the crappy springs on Eric Clapton's guest bed; the line he refused to sing in the theme song from Tootsie; and why he says you're never gonna write a great song until you get your heart broken.    ABOUT STEPHEN BISHOP Academy Award winner and two-time Grammy nominee Stephen Bishop is a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who began his career as a staff writer for a Los Angeles-based music publishing company. After finding success with Art Garfunkel’s recordings of his material, Stephen launched his own artist career with the album Careless, featuring the now-classic hits “Save it for a Rainy Day” and “On and On.” Bishop went on to find success with a number of self-penned hits as an artist, including “Everybody Needs Love,” “Send a Little Love My Way,” “If Love Takes You Away,” “Unfaithfully Yours,” and “Animal House,” the theme song for the National Lampoon's movie of the same name. Bishop also performed the song “It Might Be You” from the film Tootsie, which went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts. Written by the team of Dave Grusin with Alan and Marilyn Bergman, the song won an Academy Award. Stephen went on to win his own Academy Award as a songwriter when he penned “Separate Lives,” which was featured in the film White Nights and became a chart-topping hit duet for Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin. Other artists who’ve covered Stephen’s songs include Eric Clapton, Kenny Loggins, David Crosby, Steve Perry,  The Four Tops, Johnny Mathis, Luciano Pavarotti, Helen Reddy, Diane Schuur, Phoebe Snow, Barbra Streisand, and Beyonce. In his autobiography, Eric Clapton wrote that Stephen was “a close friend during the seventies…whom I regard as one of the great singer-songwriters.”

Vanessa Williams, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Randy Newman, Gloria Estefan, Lyle Lovett, and Bryan Adams are the featured artists in this category. One of us gets compared to Nathan Lane, and that same one of us short circuits & melts down about something from this past awards season that he’s repressed… until now! It’s another example of how we love to do this as the word halfisode is stretched to mean a much longer episode. But it doesn’t matter, cuz it’s so much fun. We analyze the films Pocahontas, Dead Man Walking, Sabrina, Don Juan DeMarco, and Toy Story by way of this music, and we have a blast heckling the music videos and hilarious outfits of the mid 90’s. So yes, Also Mike lost his mind about something bothering him for some time. This bomb drops towards the end of the episode, and it carries through to the words of wisdom. He’s not especially proud of himself for the timing of this rant, but he stands by it, and we’ll have to do an episode on this debate in the future. There’s a new proposal on how to fix the Oscars broadcast here, and we can have some fun with it in the future. As always, we want to know what you think. Is Also Mike off his rocker? (Probably). The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey

During a break in recording the score for Valley of the Dolls (the subject of the next episode), John Williams decided to take on a comedy film starring Dick Van Dyke fresh off his eponymous TV show. "Fitzwilly" featured a stately comic main theme for the main character, a butler who moonlights as a thief to fund his employer's bank account. Williams also composed a decent love theme, made into a song by the soon-to-be-famous team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman. This film also marked the final time Williams would be credited as "Johnny Williams" onscreen, and his final comedy for 12 years. Host Jeff Commings analyzes the top moments in the score as we say goodbye to Williams' very impressive comedy film era.

205 Melissa Errico Melissa Errico is an actress and singer of the Broadway stage. She has starred in Broadway musicals and is also a recording artist. This in-depth interview explored the release of Melissa Errico's album Legrand Affair, a collection of songs composed by Michel Legrand. Michel Legrand was one of the greatest composers in the world as well as a songwriter, pianist, performing and recording artist. He passed away January 26, 2019 at 86 years of age. He wrote more than 200 scores for film and television as well as many popular songs like the iconic "The Windmills of Your Mind." Some of the absolute greatest singers in history recorded his songs (Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughn). This interview was recorded and broadcast in part to promote Melissa Errico's album Legrand Affair. The album was produced by the late Phil Ramone and performed by Errico accompanied by a 100-piece symphony orchestra in Brussels. The album featured new material composed by Michel Legrand with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman specifically for Errico. As Errico says in this interview, in many ways the focus was not entirely on her. The album is almost like a duet of her and Michel Legrand. This interview is presented not only to give insight into Melissa Errico, a great singer…but, also to help us remember this exceptional composer - Michel Legrand.
