IT'S SEQUENTIAL DRAWINGS VERSUS FLESH & BLOOD ACTORS IN A SHOWDOWN OF MULTIMEDIA PROPORTIONS!   Since the advent of filmmaking, people have been combining live-action photography with hand-drawn animation and now we're talking about it. But this is a podcast and we don't have time to cover a century of motion pictures, so Gabe and returning guest Tyler Foster are covering a smaller collection of movies released in the wake of Robert Zemeckis' Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), some inspired by its success, others that would have existed without it.   This month's diverse slate includes Walter C. Miller's It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown (1988), Maurizio Nichetti & Guido Manuli's Volere Volare (To Want to Fly, 1991), Ralph Bakshi's Cool World (1992), Jan Svankmajer's Faust (1994), and Des McAnuff's The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000). I had some issues with Tyler's audio and had to do some actual (gasp) mixing to correct it. Hopefully, I did my job well enough that it sounds relatively consistent.    00:00 – Intro 11:16 – It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown  26:18 – Volere Volare 43:09 – Cool World 1:23:07 – Faust 1:41:43 – The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle 2:02:20 – Outro

Andrew heads down the rabbit hole with the travelling exhibition at Boola Bardip WA Museum in Perth, ACMI's Alice in Wonderland exhibition. Featuring a mammoth array of archival materials from since Lewis Carroll's iconic and formative book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, was first released in 1865, this exhibition takes you on a magical journey with early silent era films, to Jan Svankmajer's haunting and eerie stop motion feature, to Disney's animated version, all the way to the recent Tim Burton entries. Along the way, there is a wealth of knowledge about the various different versions of the story, whether it be through drug awareness campaigns, anime, or even x-rated musical comedies: you name it, it's here in some capacity. Yet, don't let the mention of X-rated musical comedies make you feel that this is solely an adult experience, as kids of all ages can find something to enjoy here, with a mystical maze like hallway experience with small doors, a spectacular Mad Hatter tea party experience where a bare table comes to life in front of you, and so much more. Once you've experienced the exhibition, you can also take part in the Story Time, which is for families with young kids, and features a half-hour story telling session on Friday and Sunday mornings. Additionally, on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays while the exhibition is on, you can participate in an elaborate Mad Hatter's Tea Party with high tea sessions running at 1030am and 2pm until the exhibition wraps up on the 23rd of April. To help give a bit of insight into the exhibition, I chatted with the director of exhibitions and touring, Chris Harris, about his favourite part of the exhibtion, how the exhibition has been pulled together, and the logistics of bringing Jan Svankmajer's puppetry to Australia and around the globe. Chris starts the conversation talking about the journey of the exhibition, which launched in 2018 in Melbourne, and has visited Singapore prior to landing in Perth. Coming off a full month of horror, we take a gander at something at least horror-adjacent, Wendell & Wild, a new Henry Selick stop motion animated feature - his first in 13 years - written with Jordan Peele and including the voice talent of longtime Peele collaborator Keegan Michael Key. Does this reach the heights of his past efforts such as Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline? We pair it with an earlier stop motion feature from Czech legend, Jan Svankmajer, which offers his unique interpretation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.  To make this all work, we bring in an original host from BaaM's past, Ethan Thompson, and we enjoy some hazy offerings, both of an alcoholic and non-alcoholic variety. There's a little something for nearly everyone in this episode!

Jordan Bruner is an artist and filmmaker from Virginia Beach, VA. Growing up she learned how to paint from her artist mother and on her twelfth birthday received a video camera. Having developed a love for painting, illustration, and movie making from her time experimenting as a child and studying at the Governor's School for the Arts in high school, she continued her studies in animation and filmmaking at VCU in Richmond, VA. Inspired by filmmakers like William Kentridge, Martha Colburn, Yuri Norstein and Jan Svankmajer whose personal styles are central to their films, Jordan moved to New York City in 2007 to pursue a career in animation. Jordan has continued to create films and paintings while also working professionally as an animation director for clients such as the NYTimes, Google, Eve Ensler, Amazon, and This American Life. In 2013 she was the recipient of the Art Directors Club Young Guns Award which honors creative individuals under 30 worldwide for their collective portfolio. Her films have shown at festivals worldwide including Pictoplasma and the LA Film Festival, and her illustration work has been honored by the Society of Illustrators and American Illustration. Jordan currently lives in Richmond, VA with her partner Zack, cat Pablo, and dog Zucchini. In this episode we discuss balancing commercial work with the personal, challenging definitions of success, and the importance of leisure, boredom and reflection within creative process. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ongoingness/support

Stop Motion Stratacut clay animation at its strangest- rife with Jan Svankmajer nods. The title track is Henry Rollins. Yes that is a wooden Randy Quaid - he may be the best thing about this movie. Actually- these Rastafar-Eyes may be the best thing about this movie. They actually made merchandise for this picture- and they are appropriately weird. You can purchase Freaked on Amazon. Alice Through The Looking Glass is out this weekend, but seeing as Tim Burton's first film was pretty rubbish, we don't really care. Still, Tara wanted Ti to watch a version of Lewis Carroll's classic story, but instead of selecting the 1999 fun version with Whoopi Goldberg and Martin Short (LIKE SHE PROMISED!), she changed her mind and choose Jan Svankmajer's Czech surrealistic version - Neco Z Alenky - aka Alice (1998).  How will Ti cope with the this down-right terrifying version of the story? There definitely aren't songs about learning from the flowers in this film...  Listen in and, if you like what we do, please leave us a review on iTunes.  If you have comments or suggestions, please feel free to email us at cinemablindspot@gmail.com  Find us on Facebook and on Twitter at @CinemaBlindspot or individually on Twitter at @midnightmovies and @timonsingh Cinema Blindspot is edited and produced by Peter Walsh.
