IT'S SEQUENTIAL DRAWINGS VERSUS FLESH & BLOOD ACTORS IN A SHOWDOWN OF MULTIMEDIA PROPORTIONS! Since the advent of filmmaking, people have been combining live-action photography with hand-drawn animation and now we're talking about it. But this is a podcast and we don't have time to cover a century of motion pictures, so Gabe and returning guest Tyler Foster are covering a smaller collection of movies released in the wake of Robert Zemeckis' Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), some inspired by its success, others that would have existed without it. This month's diverse slate includes Walter C. Miller's It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown (1988), Maurizio Nichetti & Guido Manuli's Volere Volare (To Want to Fly, 1991), Ralph Bakshi's Cool World (1992), Jan Svankmajer's Faust (1994), and Des McAnuff's The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000). I had some issues with Tyler's audio and had to do some actual (gasp) mixing to correct it. Hopefully, I did my job well enough that it sounds relatively consistent. 00:00 – Intro 11:16 – It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown 26:18 – Volere Volare 43:09 – Cool World 1:23:07 – Faust 1:41:43 – The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle 2:02:20 – Outro

In the 164th episode of The Main Street Electrical Podcast, Jenn & Dave continue their conversation with author/speaker/creative brain and former Disney Imagineer McNair Wilson! In this second part of their long chat, McNair shares stories about Hoop de Doo Revue and the celebrities he met... a love of Rocky & Bullwinkle... more Eisner... more Marty Sklar... a friendship with Mel Brooks (and a crush on his wife... Mrs Robinson. Yep, that one.) Plus, sharing the story of designing the original ideas for Hollywood Tower of Terror and how it came to be what you know today. And, McNair shares the title and details of his new book, and we all answer the question of why Curiosity is such an important thing.
Horror fans are a ridiculously loyal sort, but for the most part they don't love change. Back in 1982, producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted to shake things up in their Halloween franchise. Instead of just bringing boogeyman Michael Myers back for a third slash-fest, the franchise would now be done anthology-style. As in: each new Halloween movie would be its very own thing. Like Tales from the Crypt did a few years later with Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood. But things didn't go precisely as planned. For this episode I'm joined by Scott Allen Perry (@scottallenperry), who I worked with on Found Footage 3D, but maybe you've also seen him movies like Keeping Up with the Joneses, The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle, and the seasonal classic known as Santa Jaws. Another day in quarantine means another Wellness Check ... today’s is with my dear friend Laurianne (also known as “Laurianimal”). Laurianne and I met in approximately 2008 at an early Heckler Spring Training Trip. She proceeded to attend 11 straight, taking a break this year. She’s promised to be back for 2021 and I hope you’ll join us! (More info: www.tinyurl.com/HecklerST2021 ). Laurianne grew up on Chicago’s NW Side (Edison Park represent!) and has lived in L.A. for about 15 years. She has been hanging in there during the quarantine with her boyfriend in their cozy one-bedroom apartment. Laurianne is a joy to be around so it surprised me a bit when she started off the interview by saying she’s “angry most of the time,” even though she did clarify that a little later. She’s turning 40 in three weeks and now has no plans due to the quarantine and she discussed how that makes her feel. Laurianne told the story of her first Spring Training Trip, involving a drunken Lakers game and packing her clothes in a laundry basket. She also talked a few times about how she’s a patriot and what patriotic people like her should do during a pandemic and what she’d sacrifice for the quarantine to end and life to turn back to normal. Speaking of “normal,” she talked about what it’s like to date a moose and how everyone should watch Rocky & Bullwinkle on Amazon Prime: tinyurl.com/RockyAndBullwinkleAmazonPrime --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/TheHeckler/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/TheHeckler/support

We also meet David who likes unicycles, "icons", RV's, and apparently had a sexual thing for the villain from Rocky & Bullwinkle the cartoon at the age of 5. As always, we have our students of the week, class dunce, and life lessons. If you watch Love After Lockup, we invite you to listen to our podcast Life After Lockup, Haha, Mmkay (or search for us wherever you listen to podcasts). All this Russia hacking talk has Cymene and Dominic thinking about Boris, Natasha, Rocky & Bullwinkle. To set matters straight (12:02) Yale anthropologist Doug Rogers joins us to talk about the intersections of energy, power and culture in Russia. We cover the Russian hacking story and what the American news media gets right and wrong about Putin. We dissect the key factions of capital that operate in a petrostate—finance, oil, real estate, military—and their different temporalities and interests. Doug talks about why low oil prices are such a concern Russia today and why Putin might be interested in steering a geopolitics that manages the prices of fossil fuels more tightly. Then we turn to Doug's recent book, The Depths of Russia: Oil, Power, and Culture After Socialism (Cornell U Press, 2015) and explore the history of world's first “socialist oil.” We talk about the differences between petrosocialism and petrocaptalism, and why mining and factory work always had higher social status than oil production in the Soviet Union. We cover Soviet era ecological degradation, the role of environmental movements in the perestroika period and their relative disappearance subsequently. We discuss how the Soviet experience of oil challenges Mitchell's model of carbon democracy and learn how fear of socialist petrobarter led to the kinds of tax incentives and tolerance for cartelism that western oil producers continue to enjoy to this day. We also touch on the introduction of corporate social responsibility in the Russian oil industry, Lukoil's recycling of petrowealth into cultural sponsorship, and state-sponsored discourse today about how good climate change will be for Russia. Whether you're feeling petronostalgia or petrophobia this pod is for you! PS And so you don't have to Google it, here's shirtless Putin on a horse. You're welcome.

This week we look back at the life of Dick Beals, professional voice actor who has passed away this week at the age of 85. Mr. Beals was best known for his boyish voice characters such as Speedy Alka-Seltzer, Gumby, and Sherman from the Rocky & Bullwinkle series, and sang the original Oscar Meyer Weiner song. Dick Beals suffered from a glandular condition which left him with the body and voice of a 10-year old boy his entire life. We also discuss the pros and cons with using subscription-based services like Voices.com and Voices 1-2-3. What has been your experience using these services? What other online audition services have you used and what is your opinion of them? Resource of the week: The Voice Over Feedback Forum by Edge Studio. The site provides a venue for voice actors to submit their auditions and demo recordings and receive free feedback from peers. The site is an excellent resource for viewing over 4000 sample scripts, rate cards by market and genre, common voiceover misconceptions, choosing the right microphone, and countless other benefits.
