At the 1977 Firecracker 400, NASCAR invited two of Europe's most exceptional female racers — Christine Beckers and Lella Lombardi — to make their Cup Series debut… but its goals may not have been particularly noble. Janet Guthrie, who was also competing in that race, felt that NASCAR was attempting to end her career by paying foreign talent to take her down. Today on "Deadly Passions, Terrible Joys," we're delving into those accusations, and the drama surrounding the race. On this episode, Matt and Richard remember several pioneering female drivers from the past; each an inspiring character who competed on equal terms with their male peers and who achieved, against the odds, some incredible things.   Those discussed included Maria Theresa De Filippis (the first woman to compete in a world championship Grand Prix), Pat Moss (the talented rally driving sister of F1 star Stirling Moss), Lella Lombardi (the first woman to score an F1 point), Desire Wilson (the only woman to win an F1 race of any sort), Michele Mouton (a four-time world rally winner), Janet Guthrie (the first woman to qualify and compete in both Indy 500 and Daytona 500), and many more. And after reappraising the past, Matt and Richard bring us up to the present to look at efforts to bring more female drivers into the sport, and they also ponder the age old question of whether female racers will ever become mainstays in F1 in the future. Norman Negre didn't want to talk about whether or not nitrous played a part in Dale Earnhardt making the first start of his Winston Cup career … and I respected that … but we've since discussed it a little bit more … and he did admit that there were some things that he wanted to get straight. So … we met AGAIN … and we got the story straight from Norman.   This week in the second installment of our interview, Norman also talks about the lengths to which independents would go to make ends meet, his relationship with Harry Hyde, and how that led to stints with Tim Richmond, Bobby Hillin, and ALMOST Rick Hendrick.    We then take a deep dive into the July 24, 1986 issue of Grand National Scene.    Tim Richmond and Harry Hyde celebrate on the cover of this issue after Tim overcomes Hendrick Motorsports teammate Geoff Bodine and Ricky Rudd in a thrilling last-lap battle at Pocono.   Richard Petty isn't happy with Tim after the race. Harry Gant takes the pole position during qualifying … but afterward … his crew chief Travis Carter is hammered with a thousand-dollar fine for a piece that was SPIRITUALLY illegal.   There's a feature on Norman Negre; Gene Granger has the inside look on rising salary demand; and two letters to the editor stand out ... one discusses Janet Guthrie's career stats, while the other mentions rumors(?!?) that Kyle Petty might join the 1960s supergroup The Monkees!   NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand.   Be sure to check out the latest and greatest stories from the world of NASCAR at dailydownforce.com!   Interested in The Scene Vault Podcast T-shirts? Continuing my look back at some trailblazing women in the world of sports, today I look at Janet Guthrie who was the first woman to compete in a NASCAR Winston Cup race and the Indianapolis 500. She went to college and graduated from Michigan University in 1960 and worked in research and development as an aeronautical engineer. She then became one of the four women chosen for the scientist astronaut program with NASA but was eventually not eligible to continue chasing that dream because she didn't have a doctorate degree. When that didn't work out she jumped to car racing and had an amazing career that saw her break down barriers while struggling to secure sponsors as a woman. Despite that, she ended up being inducted into the Women's Sports Hall of Fame (1980) and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006).Visit my website: saxinthemorning.com for merchandise and other links. Follow us on social media: Instagram: @saxinthemorning_podcastYouTube: subscribe and watch shorts here Sponsor: Wendigo Tea

She may not have been the first, and won't be the last, but she is undoubtedly a pioneer in Motorsports. Former NASCAR racer Shawna Robinson sits down with Dale Earnhardt Jr and co-host Mike Davis for a fascinating conversation.Robinson's start in Motorsports didn't come as most people would predict. It wasn't behind the wheel of a car. It was behind the wheel of a truck. And we're not talking your everyday truck, we're talking about a Big-Rig going up to 160mph. Fresh out of high school, the small-statured Iowa girl got her first chance in competitive racing in one of the largest race vehicles possible. Her father, a man they called Lefty, and her brothers, were a part of a traveling circus of Big Rig Racing and entertainment. It was a series her dad founded and the family promoted. Sliding an 8-thousand pound truck around fairgrounds tracks sprinkled throughout America, people took notice of the young female phenom excelling in a sport full of rough and rowdy men. When the Great American Truck Racing series hit the big tracks, people took notice of Robinson. She became the first female to ever win on a superspeedway, winning at the Milwaukee Mile.Success and an unwavering work ethic created a path to NASCAR. There, Robinson went from the biggest vehicle to racing the compact stock cars of the NASCAR Dash Series. Just three races in, she made history becoming the first woman to win a NASCAR Touring Series race. Her climb to the NASCAR Xfinity Series came with some success, but some heartache as well. She was the fast qualifier at the Xfinity race at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1994. In that race, she didn't make it around to complete the first lap. She was wrecked. Was it intentional? Other drivers and a commentator told her it was. Shawna shares the story. The ups and downs of racing intersected life and the start of her own family during one phone call. It was her best opportunity yet, but one she had to turn down. She shares the emotion of turning down a ride due to pregnancy. A few years later, Shawna found herself trying to qualify for the 2002 Daytona 500. The Cup Series rookie became the first driver since Janet Guthrie, in 1977, to race her way into the Great American race.Shawna's racing career didn't pan out the way she wanted, but she's someone who will always be remembered. For Dale Earnhardt Jr., she will also be remembered as a woman who stood her ground. The table conversation gets interesting when the two drivers talk about an incident that stemmed from a practice get-together, continued into the race, included a middle-finger and an angry Robinson going to confront Earnhardt in his hauler.Shawna opens up to Dale Jr. and Mike Davis about some of the challenges she faced throughout her career being a female in a male-dominated sport. She also shares her thoughts on the females who have gripped the wheel after her career and what advantages they have in creating opportunities. But her biggest challenge came outside of the racecar. A cancer diagnosis and rigorous chemotherapy and radiation was just another hurdle for her to jump. Shawna discusses the day she found out the news and how she got through it.Before Shawna's arrival, the DJD gang talks about the big moment for Formula One driver Daniel Riccardo getting to drive his father's famed no. 3 car around Austin, Texas' Circuit of the Americas. It was at this moment that everything pivoted to Auto Racing. He took his intense work ethic and desire from the cornfields of Ohio, to Indianapolis, and eventually the top-ranks of NASCAR. Along the way, he worked with legendary drivers like Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Donnie Allison, Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, and more. He also worked around some characters, like tough Minnesotan Joe Frasson. Cronkrite shares a crash story for the ages with Frasson, bloodied, insisting on Cronkrite taping his hand to the steering wheel. Before he arrived in the southern stock car world, Cronkrite experienced a different side of racing in the Chicagoland area. He reveals how things were different in racing up there and how he was rewarded with diamonds for good performance. He also tells the tale of a gruesome fight that led to jail time and the fear of what was to happen when he was sprung by a "connected" individual involved in the racing operation. It's a story you have to hear to believe. Cronkrite talks about many racing topics from DiGard Racing, to working with a gutsy racing pioneer named Janet Guthrie. He also shares stories from his months working on the hit Burt Reynolds movie Stroker Ace, including when Dale Sr. shook down the Chicken Pit Special. The colorful Cronkrite tells a story about actress Loni Anderson and a lucky penny that he still has to this day. Before bringing in Cronkrite, Dale and co-host Mike Davis have an open discussion about how "me" turns to "we" after marriage. In AskJr presented by Xfinity, we find out what Dale Jr. predicts for 2022 with Roush Racing and new co-owner driver Brad Keselowski. He also talks about going radio-style at the Glen and the origins of his popular skeleton driving gloves. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Always adventuring, always indulging her passion for racing. Despite constant scrutiny and criticism, Janet proved that she or indeed any other woman was capable to racing with the very best in the world.

Producer-director Jenna Ricker has worked solely in narrative film until now. In “Qualified,” her first non-fiction feature, the film’s subject is a pioneer in motor sports — and feminism — Janet Guthrie, the first woman to compete in the Memorial Day spectacle, the Indianapolis 500. Janet started out as an aerospace engineer with a longing for flight and a parallel love of motor sports, which in turn steered her into racing on the stock car circuit. In 1977, her passion and skill for auto racing — honed on road tracks like Daytona and Sebring — led her to be enlisted as the first woman to qualify for Indy. This required her to not only be an elite athlete reaching the pinnacle of American auto racing, breaking into one of the last bastions of the male dominated sport, but she also had to endure a barrage of public insults and belittlement; yet she persisted. “Qualified” is a documentary covering a pivotal moment in U.S. sports history, a gripping and inspiring chronicle of the calm resolve of racer Janet Guthrie. 1985: "We Are The World" Helps Fight Famine in Ethiopia

Trivia Minute by TriviaPeople.com

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 7, 2017 5:26

On this date in 1985, the charity song “We Are The World” was released. Here are some things you may not have known about it. More than a million people died as a result of a widespread famine in Ethiopia between 1983 and 1985, in the midst of more than two decades of insurrection and civil war. In response to this, musician Bob Geldof organized a supergroup of mostly British and Irish musicians called Band Aid to record a charity single called “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” The song ended up raising 8 million pounds in the first year. Inspired by the success, Harry Belafonte decided to organize an American version. Calling the group USA For Africa, the USA standing for United Support of Artists, the group would raise money for African famine relief and to fight hunger in the United States. Belafonte called on entertainment manager Ken Kragen, whose clients included Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers. Stevie Wonder was the third artist to join up.  Quincy Jones was brought on to co-produce the song, and he convinced Michael Jackson to join the effort. Jackson, Richie and Wonder were initially assigned songwriting duties, but Wonder had to drop out because of time constraints. Jackson and Richie spent a week working together on the song. The duo completed writing the song the night before recording was scheduled to begin. On the night of Jan. 22, Jackson, Richie, Wonder and Jones recorded a vocal guide of the song to send to the artists who would be participating in the full recording session about a week later. At about 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 28, musicians began gathering at A&M Recording Studios in Hollywood. The final version was completed at about 8 a.m. The song was released on March 7, and went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after two weeks, becoming the second song after “Let It Be” by The Beatles to his No. 1 so quickly. The song topped Billboard’s Adult Contemporary, R&B and Dance charts as well. It hit No. 27 on the Mainstream Rock chart and 76 on the Country Singles chart. A videotape of the recording session ended up being the ninth best-selling home video of the year. The song also topped the charts in 15 other countries, and was the year-end No. 1 hit in Australia and New Zealand. Since its release, the song has raised more than $63 million for USA For Africa’s humanitarian fund. Our question: Who was the only singer on “We Are The World” who also played an instrument on the track? Today is Teachers’ Day in Albania. It’s unofficially National Sportsmanship Day, National Cereal Day, and Peace Corps Day. It’s the birthday of Janet Guthrie, the first woman to race in the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500, who turns 79; actress and comedian Wanda Sykes, who is 53; and actress Jenna Fischer, who is 43. This week in 1985, the top song in the U.S. was “Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon. The No. 1 movie was “Beverly Hills Cop,” while the novel “If Tomorrow Comes” by Sidney Sheldon topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question: For which book, later turned into a movie, did James Michener win the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for fiction? GAME CHANGERS The Unsung Heroines of Sports History By MOLLY SCHIOT Simon & Schuster | Hardcover | October 18, 2016 | Simone Biles. Serena Williams. Katie Ledecky. Today, we know these women, their names, and their accomplishments, as well as the many others who have left their mark on the sports world in recent years. But what about the women who came before them, the trailblazers who made it possible for these champions to get out on the field and play? In GAME CHANGERS: The Unsung Heroines of Sports History (Simon & Schuster; October 18, 2016; $25), Molly Schiot celebrates the stories of those forgotten female athletes and shares rarely-before-seen photos. Director and artist Molly Schiot started documenting these lost stories after she pitched an idea for a short film to a major sports network about the Wake-Robin Golf Club, a group of African-American women who fought for their right to play golf in the 1930s (pictured at right). The film didn’t get made, but Schiot continued to spend time researching at the LA84 archive. She soon found dozens more undiscovered female athletes from the pre-Title IX era, and knew she had to highlight their achievements. She created the Instagram account @theunsungheroines and shared a photo each day of female athletes who made significant strides (literally and figuratively) in some of the most popular games in the world. Her account gained an enthusiastic following, and the result is GAME CHANGERS, a beautifully illustrated collection that gives these “founding mothers” the attention and recognition they deserve. The book also features new and powerful conversations about women and sports between some of today’s heroines—including former US Women’s National Soccer Team captain Abby Wambach, professional skateboarder Lacey Baker, and SportsCenter anchor Cari Champion—and the pioneers who motivated them to push forward. This empowering and unforgettable book is the perfect keepsake for mothers, daughters, fans, feminists, and the champions of tomorrow. * Select photos featured in the book can be available for publicity use upon request * A sample of the many remarkable women Molly Schiot features in GAME CHANGERS When talented nine-year old Kim Green was refused the right to join Little League baseball in her hometown of Newark, Delaware because she was a girl, her mom Sylvia Green decided to take matters into her own hands. Along with other activists, Sylvia successfully sued the Little League and formed a massively popular all-girls team called “the Angels” in protest. Girls were finally permitted to try out for Little League baseball in 1974 and in that first year alone, over 30,000 young women participated. Sheryl Swoopes was the first woman to be signed by the WNBA and was the inspiration for the Nike Air Swoopes, the first signature basketball shoe named after a woman. For years before, it had been nearly impossible for female basketball players to find sneakers that weren’t specifically designed for men. Swoopes shoes soon became so popular that men looked for larger sizes so they could wear them too. Christy Martin is one of the most successful and prominent female boxers in the United States. She was the first female boxer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and had a seven year winning streak in the ring. After being shot by her then-husband and trainer Jim Martin, she became an advocate for victims of domestic abuse. Earlene Brown won numerous national championships and Olympic medals for her achievements in track and field. She was the first woman to break the 50-foot barrier in shot put. Brown says that when she was young, she “was ashamed of her size. I never thought that something of which I was ashamed… could make me feel proud. But I feel proud now.” When NASCAR driver Janet Guthrie qualified for both the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500, she was the first woman to race in either competition. She faced constant humiliation from onlookers and other racers, who chanted insults like, “no tits in the pit!” when she was on the course. Despite her talent and multiple wins, Janet was eventually forced to retire after not receiving sponsorship in a widely male-dominated sport. Gertrude Earle was an American Olympic swimmer who swam the English Channel in fourteen hours and thirty-four minutes on August 26, 1926. Her swim broke the world record time by two hours and she became a national celebrity, starring in a short film about her life and even joining a vaudeville act. Eventually, she withdrew from the public eye and retired to teach swimming at a school for the deaf.
