We hope you like innovative jazz-based electric guitarists, because our first episode of 2025 focuses on two of 'em. Jeff Parker is here to talk about his recent jazz album for Nonesuch, The Way Out Of Easy, credited to Jeff Parker And The ETA IVtet. Parker talks about working with his L.A. based quartet, which features bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose, and saxophone player, Josh Johnson, but we also look back at his highly musical time in the windy city of Chicago, where he first made a name for himself with groups such as Tortoise. This episode gives us an excuse to reprise our interview with prodigious jazz guitarist Julian Lage discussing his RSD Exclusive release, Live In Los Angeles, that first ran as part of our RSD Black Friday 2024 coverage. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Jeff Parker! Look, when it comes to favorite guitarists, Jeff is on my Mount Rushmore. A few years ago, he put together one of the best bands around with his ETA 4tet - Jeff, Anna Butterss, Josh Johnson, and Jay Bellerose, and they've got a new album - “The Way Out Of Easy” - out now on International Anthem. After talking about that and Tortoise, we get into Dionne Warwick singing some scary sentiments, the greatness of “Wichita Lineman,” learning to love Neil Young, one of Drake's bangers, Steely Dan, Frank Ocean, Gladys Knight, and plenty more!Listen to all of Jeff's picks HERE“The Way Out Of Easy”“Mondays At The Enfield Tennis Academy”Jeff Parker's websiteJeff Parker on InstagramAnna Butterss on Songs of Our LivesSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. Guitarist Jeff Parker is probably best known for his work in the Chicago-based post rock band Tortoise, but he's had a prolific career as a soloist and a sideman. In the past few years he's been leading his ETA IVtet, an all-star group of musicians (saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Jay Bellerose) - on the L.A. experimental music scene. Together, they create transcendent, long-form journeys into innovative, often uncharted territories of groove-oriented, painterly, polyrhythmic, minimalist and mantric improvised music (Bandcamp liner notes). The Jeff Parker ETA IVtet plays in-studio. Set list: 1. Improvisation 2. Improvisation on Freakadelic
On March 1, Paula Cole released her latest album, Lo. It's her first collection of original new music in nearly a decade. Singles like "Green Eyes Crying" are earthy and organic, the result of recording with longtime collaborators like drummer Jay Bellerose. Known for hits like "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" and "I Don't Want to Wait," Cole never saw herself as a top 40 artist. She takes pride in the deep catalog she has created and the deep musical connections she's maintained. From her home in snowy New England, Cole talks to Jordan and Demi about new music, memories from Lilith Fair, and her impact on '90s pop culture.

Guitarist and composer Molly Miller joins me on the show today. I first saw Molly playing a show at Nelson Drum Shop here in Nashville with her trio - Jay Bellerose on drums and Jen Condos on bass. It was a spectacular show. Molly has a really unique style that's rhythmic and aggressive but also extremely melodic. Kinda jazz. Kinda not. The trio is a regular thing for her, and they create music that owes as much to Booker T and the MG's as it does to a more traditional jazz approach. Molly also has taken a unique path to her career in music - it's a combo of playing live, recoding her own albums, touring and recording as guitarist for Jason Mraz, and then teaching at University. In fact, she has a doctorate degree in music and she was the Chair of the Guitar Department at LA College of Music, and is currently a professor of Studio Guitar at USC in LA. So between all those things, she's got a really interesting career on the go. To hear her at her finest, check out one of the Molly Miller trio albums, which feature amazingly creative guitar playing but also spectacular arrangements and ensemble playing. The latest album is called “St. George”, and there's also a new one in the works. We had a great conversation about all of those things, as well as her instruments and gear, and how she approaches solo guitar playing. Enjoy! You can keep up with all of Molly's projects and tour dates atmollymillermusic.comBe sure to listen to the Accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Jay Bellerose is a Los Angeles-based touring and studio veteran with an approach and aesthetic all his own. His passion for all things old and gritty has resulted in a personality behind the drums that has become sought after by artists and producers including Robert Plant & Allison Krauss, T-Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, Ray LeMontagne, In this episode, Jay talks about: The Slingerland "Rolling Bomber" set he plays on the Plant/Krauss tour, and how the sound is captured Having to find and fight for his aesthetic amidst the LA scene How singers move, and how drummers can recognize and respond to that How the Plant/Krauss project is separate and distinct from Robert or Allison's individual history or work Playing in Molly Miller's trio with his wife, Jennifer Condos on bass The deceptive challenge of simple instrumental music Keeping his schedule intentionally sparse when he's home in LA
The convergence of legendary Grammy- and Oscar-winning producer/artist T Bone Burnett, master drummer Jay Bellerose, and composer/keyboardist Keffus Ciancia brings together a holy musical trinity. From the booming opening notes, you can feel the tribal trance that speaks to a larger truth on “I'm Starting A New Life Today.”

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Nicki Bluhm. A San Franciscan now calling Tennessee home, Nicki Bluhm possesses a modern, clear-eyed perspective that grabs the heart and keeps you holding on to every word. Her new album was recorded in Bluhm's home in East Nashville, and features the talents of luminaries like Oliver Wood, James Pennebaker, Jay Bellerose, Jen Condos, Erik Slick, Erin Rae, Karl Denson, A.J. Croce and more, Avondale Drive combines nostalgic country-rock with distinctly modern, sharp lyricism—an apt contrast for the process of studying one's past in order to make a better future. Following appearances and collaborations with artists such as Phil Lesh, Dawes, The Band of Heathens, Little Feat, and The Infamous Stringdusters, Bluhm's creative confidence is well-won, and her authentic voice and songwriting is all the more apparent on ‘Avondale Drive'. Sherry and Nicki chat about ‘Avondale Drive' and more! Visit nickibluhm.com for more information.
Nicki Bluhm hails from Lafayette, California. The singer/songwriter released her first album in 2008. She also was a a part of Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. Her latest project, Avondale Drive, deals a lot with making a fresh start in life - after a divorce and a relocation to Nashville, Bluhm is ready to make music on her own terms. The new album was produced by Jesse Noah Wilson and features guest appearances from folks like AJ Croce, Oliver Wood, Eric Slick and Jay Bellerose. After listening to her previous work, we think it's her strongest album to date.Note: the chirping you hear throughout the interview is a baby duck that decided to make friends while Bluhm was talking!
Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at https://basicfolk.com/donate/Former Grant Lee Buffalo frontman, Grant-Lee Phillips' latest solo album, All That You Can Dream, is -quite- dreamy. During the pandemic, Grant's been contemplating many things and figuring out how to spend his time away from the road. One interest he's been cultivating is painting. He's been sharing his paintings on social media and even used a painting of his beloved silver headphones, which you can also find on the liner notes for Grant Lee Buffalo's Mighty Joe Moon. He worked on this album from his home in Nashville where he produced, engineered, mixed, and recorded himself. And in addition to a few other musicians, he's joined by the crack team of bassist Jennifer Condos and drummer Jay Bellerose. It's always a treat to hear this dynamic duo! He said working on the album at home "pushed me to take the wheel as an engineer, mixer and producer. Consequently, so many nuances remain in the final mix, all the weird stuff that sometimes gets lost in the polishing stages of production." I'm all about that on a GLP recording. It sounds rich and raw at the same time, which feels very good in the chest. All That You Can Dream is filled with his signature songwriting: “using rich historical references to illuminate modern truths.” Grant says "I'm always juxtaposing the events that we're all going through with similar events in history.”In our conversation, we talk about Grant's early life in Stockton, CA. He grew up knowing his family included Native American on both parents' sides. He made an album in 2012, Walking in the Green Corn, which explored his indigenous heritage. He gets into how David Bowie opened up his world, why he started playing guitar and what he likes about playing a 12 string versus a 6 string guitar. He talks about how acting has been a constant in his life; from being a professional magician at age 10 to appearing regularly as The Town Troubadour on Gilmore Girls. Hope you enjoy this interview with one of my favorite people!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
On this episode we are joined by singer-songwriter Andy Zipf on the eve of the release of his latest single, “Did You Know I Was A Ghost?” and in anticipation of his upcoming album, How To Make A Paper Airplane. Zipf, a 20-year veteran artist, has worked with labels and functioned as an indie. He has been in bands and has been a solo artist. His latest album, however, takes his work to a whole new place. Drummer and percussionist Jay Bellerose, bassist Jennifer Condos, keyboardist Tyler Chester, and upright bassist Dennis Crouch, have played with T Bone Burnett, Robert Plant, Over The Rhine, Madison Cunningham, and too many others to list. As Zipf's band, they bring sparkle and depth to his excellent songs about loss, doubt, mystery, and beauty. And speaking of sparkle and depth, we cue up U2's Achtung Baby on the True Tunes Jukebox and take a careful listen 30 years on. Artist manager and certified geek Nick Barre joins JJT to examine the lingering legacy of this postmodern classic. Don't miss Andy's exclusive acoustic performance of "Did You Know I Was A Ghost?" on True Tunes at 45RPM. The True Tunes Podcast is sponsored by VisionTrust.org. “I'm not someone who's like ‘I just play this genre.' I play music. I play the guitar.” Guitarist Molly Miller released St. George, which is hailed by some as a jazz album. But she's also played with the Black-Eyed Peas and is the go-to guitarist for Jason Miraz. So where does that put her musically? Molly would say distinctions don't matter; for her, it's all just music. Molly also says her trio is trying to bring the instrumental back. While there is no singing on the album, you can hear the story in the emotion in her songs, whether it's inspired by a breakup, touring, or the street she runs on every day. Listen to the latest episode of Bite-Size Jazz to hear Molly talk about how bassist Jennifer Condos and drummer Jay Bellerose brought clarity to her music, how she deals with performance nerves, and why she chose the name St. George (hint: It's not because of Utah) Learn more about Molly Miller on her website, and find her album anywhere you stream music. It's also available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon Music. Check out her latest music video, "Spry."

He tells Joe about: growing up in large family in Maine; losing his father at a young age; working as a baker; the importance of being musically selective; and why he likes living at a deliberate pace.

My guest this week is studio guitarist Adam Levy. Adam is a killer guitar player with an impressive history of live and studio work. A member of Norah Jones' band for years, Adam got his start playing around San Francisco and LA, eventually landing a gig with Tracy Chapman. Adam is tactful and tasteful in his guitar playing, never stepping into a solo spotlight without something meaningful to add to a song. Understated but memorable, Adam’s solos draw on elements of jazz and country to reflect perfectly the simple, earnest sentiment of the composition. Beyond continuing his recording career as a sideman for celebrated artists, Levy has risen as a songwriter in his own right. His compositions have been recorded by Norah Jones, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), and Miles Zuniga (Fastball). The full force of Adam Levy’s songwriting is in play on his six solo recordings, the latest being 2016’s lyrically driven Blueberry Blonde - a collaboration with drummer Jay Bellerose. Enjoy my conversation with Adam Levy, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!

Drummer Jay Bellerose is my guest on the show this week. If your musical taste crosses over with mine at all, Jay is probably the drummer on some of your favorite records of the last 15 years. If you've been following this show, Jay's name has come up many times in other interviews, so it was high-time to drag him in for an episode of his own! Jay's unique approach to drumming, with unorthodox setups and an awesome palette of vintage drums has made him the go-to drummer for producers like T-Bone Burnett and Joe Henry. We talk about his approach to drumming and musicality in the studio, and how he tries to be very selective about the projects he takes on. In fact, he once turned down a gig with David Byrne, only to take his first gig with Joe Henry, opening for David Byrne! Meshell 's records, nine to date, have offered lyrical ruminations on race, love, sex, betrayal, God, and power, and she has simultaneously embraced and challenged listeners with her refusal to be pigeon-holed musically or personally. She has been nominated for 10 Grammys. Meshell was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine. Her new album, Weather, cloaks itself in the colours of autumn, full of in-between shades and hues and with a certain mildness to it. The singer has let her feelings carry her along. Meshell has never been scared of sharing her most intimate thoughts in explicit or colourful terms that always come from the heart. As ever, she is true to herself. But Weather's folk sensibility and pregnant acoustic melodies make this a supremely accessible album. She is accompanied by Chris Bruce (guitar), Deantoni Parks (drums), Keefus Ciancia (keyboards), Gabe Noel (cello) and guests Jay Bellerose (drums) and Benji Hughes (backing vocals). www.meshell.com
