Happy Sunday you Future-holics. I wanted to focus today's episode on George McFly. After being such a major part of the first film, the character was barely used in this sequel, and we all know why. With Crispin Glover deciding not to participate in the sequels, producers turned to fairly unknown actor named Jeffrey Weissman to fill the penny loafers of Marty McFly's dad in the few scenes he was in. And yet - we still see Crispin Glover in this movie! This episode features the audio of a February 2021 interview with Crispin Glover from the Jon Interviews youtube channel and a February 2020 video featuring Jeffrey Weissman from the NJ Horror Con and Film Festival youtube channel. I found the photo for this episode on this Retro Lady Land blog post.

It's westward ho! This week on Fabulous Film & Friends, as we discuss Clint Eastwood's 1985 Guns, Gold, Ghosts and God spectacular Pale Rider, which was a return to form for Mr. Eastwood in the mid-80's when the Western genre was considered on the way out. My guest is Jeffrey Weissman who acted in the film as Teddy Conway, one of the gentle, kind-hearted gold mining brothers in the story.Mr. Weissman is the founder of the Bay Area Professional Actors Studio and a 48-year stage, film and television veteran, a multitalented, multi-hyphenate actor, teacher, writer, producer and all around great person. You may remember him from Twilight Zone: The Movie, Johnny Dangerously, in Back To The Future II and III as George McFly, guest starring roles on Diagnosis Murder, Scarecrow & Mrs King, as Screech's guru the High Geek on Saved By The Bell, on The Rocket Family Chronicles as well as day playing and voice over work on countless movies episodic shows, commercials and short films. I met him in 2005 on a Toyota commercial shoot filming locally. I was working as a production assistant helping sign in actors and what I recall is I recognized him from the Back To The Future series and I immediately started in with irritating fanboy questions, the kind that one gets asked a million times, and Jeffrey answered with grace, good humor and patience, when he really didn't have to. And likely didn't want to. Since that initial meeting, Jeffrey helped me with a DGA auditioning workshop and read two of my screenplays without charging a dime, offering very constructive feedback. And I've come to know Jeffrey as a true champion of the arts and artists, especially here in the Bay Area. Before we begin, the all-important synopsis:The plot of Pale Rider entails an evil mining baron named Coy LaHood who unleashes a band of mounted thugs on an independent camp of California gold miners in the latter part of the 19th Century. The thugs trash the camp and kill the dog of young, 15 year old Megan Wheeler, daughter to a woman named Sarah, who herself is living under the protection of a miner named Hull Barrett. Hull and his companions are under constant pressure by LaHood and his repugnant son Joshua to pack up and leave their camp so LaHood can reap the treasures buried underneath their camp site. Shortly after the camp trashing incident, Megan prays over her dead dog's grave, asking God for a miracle and as she does so, a mysterious figure simply known as “Preacher” shows up in town riding on a Pale Horse. Preacher immediately saves Hull from a brutal attack by LaHood's goons and decisively evens the odds between the independents and the baron. Inspired by Preacher's bravery, the miners decide to stand up to LaHood and refuse a payoff bribe that he offers as another tactic to get rid of them. But LaHood ups the ante and hires a shady and vicious Marshall named Stockburn, a figure from Preacher's past no less, to end the conflict for once for all. So the burning question is: What does Pale Rider mean both on an artistic and personal level to Jeffrey Weissman? Listen and find out! Imagine being cast into the role of one of the most iconic characters in movie history and becoming part of possibly the greatest trilogy of all time. That is EXACTLY what happened to Jeffrey Weissman when he stepped into the role of George McFly for Back To The Future 2 and 3! It was a long road to get there and a long road to get back but luckily...where we're going, we don't need any roads. Jeffrey started out doing extra work in Hollywood and getting brain washed by Alice Cooper (yes I said what I said...listen in), to doing a movie with Clint Eastwood, to a monster on the wing in the Twilight Zone movie and he was even a lacky for Screech on Saved By The Bell. You can now catch Jeffrey still with his hands in so many projects but of course appearing at cons across the country for all of us loyal BTTF fans! There is so much laughter and so much fun and some incredible stories in this episode so sit back and get ready to go back....to the future! Here are the links we discuss within the episode for projects Jeffrey is involved in and of course the BTTF website for updates on appearances and more!Get Thee Backhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1TkDzAy_-gProject 88https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcUUjWbVc4IBTTF Websitehttps://www.backtothefuture.com/Mark Twain Lecturehttps://marktwainstudies.com/events/the-trouble-begins-at-eight/Rock!

Of course, I am talking about Back to the Future and this week's guest is Actor Jeffrey Weissman who played George McFly in Parts 2 and 3, and the story how he got the role is pretty wild. Jeffrey Weissman's interest in film began as a child growing up in Hollywood during the 1960's. He'd visit professional location shoots in his neighborhood, and then pick the brains of cast & crew. Jeffrey began making films in 1974 and hasn't stopped.Jeffrey trained at the American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco State University and was a founding member of Los Angeles Theater Sports.Jeffrey co-stars with top names in the biz; in classic films BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II & BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III as 'George McFly', Clint Eastwood's PALE RIDER, George Miller's episode of TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, etc.) and in indies (CORKED, SLAPDASH, CHATEAU MEROUX, etc).On television, he's guest starred dozens of times, (SCARECROW & MRS. KING, DIAGNOSIS MURDER, SAVED BY THE BELL, etc.) and web series ("Rocket Family Chronicles", "HUSH", "Dining with the Darlings", "Treasure Chronicles, etc.").He's appeared in over a hundred stage productions, in addition to many years of environmental & educational shows — Jeffrey continues working in all mediums. He's a catalyst behind the scenes; writing, directing, casting, producing, consulting and mentoring. Jeffrey uses his wisdom from four decades of film experience to teach in the arts at Universities, High Schools, vocational institutions, film expos, festivals and privately. We had the absolute pleasure of talking to Jeffrey Weissman this week! Jeffrey of course was cast in the role of George McFly when Crispin Glover decided not to reprise his role in the Back To The Future sequels. The opinions expressed in this episode are Jeffrey's. This time, we're returning to a franchise we covered in the early days of the show with Back to the Future Part 2 and along the way we discuss what the rules for a sequel are, how this film nailed some predictions yet got 2015 so wrong, and how Crispin Glover, the weirdest man in existence, managed to forever change Hollywood. Let's dig in… Back to the Future Part II Cast and Crew With a couple of exceptions, the entirety of the cast and crew returned to produce Part II. Directed by Robert Zemeckis: After completing the first film in the series, Zemeckis became a hot commodity, and went on to make Who Framed Roger Rabbit? That film is great and we have no complaints to levy against it, but it was a clear indication of the technological lengths Zemeckis was willing to go to in order to accomplish his vision. If you're unfamiliar with Roger Rabbit, the real world and the cartoon world are blended together with characters like Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse who coexist with humans in 1940's Hollywood. The film blends live action and cartoon animations to create a surreal yet enjoyable experience and Zemeckis would carry this ambition into Back to the Future Part II Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly: At the time of Back to the Future's release in 1985, Fox became an overnight sensation and would star in several major 80's movies including Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success and Casualties of War, but returned to the franchise to reprise his role in Part II Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown: Lloyd has enjoyed a great career thanks to his manic portrayal of this somewhat mad scientist and was more than willing to return to the franchise only if Zemeckis and Fox were signed on to return as well Elisabeth Shue as Jennifer Parker: Shue replaced Claudia Wells from the first film and while Jennifer plays a slightly bigger role this time around, she spends the majority of the film unconscious and waiting for Marty and Doc to fix the corrupted version of 1985 Thomas F. Wilson returns to play Biff and Griff Tannen Lea Thompson also returns to play Lorraine Baines-McFly Crispin Glover didn't return to the franchise following a disagreement with the producers, he was replaced with Jeffrey Weissman who was disguised using prosthetics and flipping the actor to obscure the audience's view of the actor's face Alan Silvestri returned to compose the soundtrack as he had for the first film Back to the Future 2 Special Effects: I Knew it was a Fake Shark For the time of the film's release, the special effects are incredibly advanced. For starters, it took the production design almost two years to build the sets. The production designer, who had previously worked on Blade Runner, undertook the project with a personal goal of making Part II look nothing like Blade Runner. If you've seen Blade Runner, you know that it is a very dark and sleek yet it has an edge to it. The team was given a blank canvas to do what they wanted, but there are differences between the Hill Valley square shown in the first film to that of the second film. Notably, the addition of the garden and fountain in the center and beefing up the technological advances are visible on-screen. One big addition to the film was the introduction of the Vistaglide system. The Vistaglide camera system enabled Zemeckis to insert the same actor at different points in the same scene. Hence why we see two Michael J. Fox's playing Marty McFly Sr. and Marty McFly Jr., as well as Thomas F. Wilson playing an older Biff Tannen and a character named Griff in 2015. While these type of scenes existed prior to this film, the new Vistaglide system allowed for camera movement and dynamic action in these scenes. Introduced in the final moments of the first film, Doc had modified the Delorean to fly and that also had to be included in Part II. The Delorean exclusively flies in this film and it's disguised rather well that you hardly notice it.

What an honor it was to speak to Jeffery about all his experiences in theater, movies and TV. with over 40 years of great stories and roles, I could have listened to Jeffrey talk for days about his work as an actor. What started out as a mild mannered interview, quickly developed into my very own personal Master Class. I can see why Jefferey is a sought after acting coach by actors looking to hone their craft. He is truly a wealth of knowledge about the art of acting and performance art. He breathes life into some or our favorite characters like George McFly, Charlie Chaplin, Teddy Conway, Stan Laurel and Groucho Marx. You can see Jeffrey in some of our favorite TV shows like Saved By The Bell, Max Headroom, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Dallas and Diagnosis Murder. Weissman is also the founder and director of The Flying Penguins improv group and helped develop Los Angeles Theater Sports, now known as "Impro Theater" in its 21th year. He performed in the Second City Alumni jams at the Ashgrove, and performed for a year with the Laugh Factory All-star Improv Jam (aka "Wrought Irony"). If you or anyone you know is passionate about learning what it is to be a talented, sustainable and ever evolving actor, this interview is a MUST see or listen! Thank you so much Jeffrey for spending the time with me. I learned so much from our talk about being the constant student and learning along the journey in whatever you feel gives you purpose. Do you feel powerless over the success of your career? “Making it” can often feel like it’s defined by someone else and has nothing to do with how hard you work or how good you are. From casting directors, producers, people who hire you for a gig, to the audience themselves - there is often a sense of giving over your power to everyone else in hopes of being one of the “chosen few” in the spotlight. In this episode, Holly talks with Jeffrey Weissman, an actor for over 40 years about the power struggle in Hollywood, how to get ahead and succeed in the film industry, and we hear his firsthand account of how he was caught in the middle of a controversial power struggle over the casting of Back to the Future II. This episode includes an Initiation Exercise to help you shift your mindset from powerless to powerful - and to shake up the Power Paradigm.
