Happy Pride and happy (early) Juneteenth, dear listeners! On this episode, we decided to talk about a lovely, happy comic book titled, "Bingo Love" written by Tee Franklin, art by Jenn St-Onge, and colors by Joy San. This is the story of two Black women named Hazel (a.k.a. Elle) Johnson and Mari McCray who meet at church bingo in New Jersey as young girls in 1963. They go on to become best friends and fall in love, but are then torn apart by their families because their love is seen as forbidden. But this story—which spans more than 50 years—has a happy ending that celebrates love, joy, and freedom. We loved it and think you would too. On Fresh is the Word, we like to deliver wisdom through great stories from the minds of bright creatives of pop culture. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. The guest for this episode is Canadian comic book artist/illustrator and self proclaimed "Bisexual Comics Cat Mom™", Jenn St-Onge. St-Onge is known for her work on series like Dynamite's Nancy Drew, IDW's Jem & The Misfits, and Image's Bingo Love, along with a selection of cover work for various comic book companies. During our chat, we talked about the projects she's worked on recently, where she found her artistic inspiration, striking out on her own to do freelance work, her mentors, the different facets of collaboration, the horror genre, and much more. Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories to tell. St-Onge chose comic writers Kelly Thompson and Magdalene Visaggio, and her brother Jeff St-Onge. This is our chattiest episode yet. Before we dig into our book talk, we find out the ending of #cockygate, fangirl over Beverly Jenkins tweets and do a quick survey of popular books we have — and haven’t — read. Don’t worry, we find time to discuss Bingo Love, by Tee Franklin, Jenn St-Onge and Joy San. ----more---- Pop in around the 40-minute mark to hear us analyze Elle and Hazel’s romance, as well as try and figure out what Jake’s big secret is. (Also, what’s going on with his wonky colored eyes???) It was a cute book that we wish we could have had more of. In other news, we’re getting close to our second birthday! We’re planning to celebrate with a nostalgic throwback read, so tweet us your favorite over at @blackchicklit. Thanks for listening and be sure to rate, review and subscribe to us on iTunes. This Smaller Press Saturday, our comics work is 'Finding Molly: Adventures in Catsitting' 1-4 by Justine Prado, Jenn St-Onge, & Carey Pietsch, from Emet Comics. Molly is a recent art school graduate trying to make her way and find herself in the LA arts scene, and this playfully illustrated and told story also explores AND exemplifies the search for authenticity between the commercial and the artistic. Let's dig deep.
Justine Prado and Jenn St-Onge, the writer and artist of Emet Comics‘ Finding Molly: An Adventure in Catsitting, join us this week to discuss the inspiration behind their hilarious and sincere book as well as talking about their new Kickstarter to fund the Finding Molly graphic novel! It’s a rare treat to have both creators of a comic aboard, and we had an absolute blast talking about comics, cats, and comics about cats! Fortnight’s Challenge: Escape From PATRICK’S BDAY CHALLENGE!
