We welcome writer Matthew Erman and artist Sam Beck to talk about their new graphic novel, Loving, Ohio! After the mysterious suicide of their friend, Sloane, Elliott, Cameron, and Ana are just trying to get through the rest of high school. They live in Loving, Ohio—a town built around The Chorus, a new age cult with members firmly planted in positions of power and influence throughout the community. Through their grief a series of murders throw these friends into a mystery connected to everything around them. Sloane and her friends have to escape a roaming murderer, figure out their place in the world, and deal with loss all in the looming shadow of The Chorus. But through it they will find the true cost of friendship and the adulthood they seek. Get your copy at the link below! I have been following Matthew Erman's comic career for a while and watching it evolve over time. The themes that have been explored in each of his stories have related in one way or another in some ways but they all feel like they were leading up to Loving, Ohio. I was lucky enough to read the comic last year and have not been able to stop thinking about it since. It's a beautiful horror graphic novel dealing with family, belonging, and understanding the systems on which you can rely. The story itself deals a lot with a cult and such which the author Matthew Erman was in for a bit of his life. We don't get into that too much into this interview because to be honest, I felt it wasn't a topic I felt relevant to our VERY open and honest discussion. We talk about so many things in this interview. Matthew talks very openly about the comics industry in ways that I had never even fathomed to think of point of view wise before. It's a very in depth conversation about shelf space, belonging, and chances. It's an interview that I am very proud of presenting to you that was inspired by a book that I have been comfortable calling the horror comic of the year since year. I can firmly say that Loving, Ohio is still my favorite horror comic of 2024 and on my must-read list for anyone looking for a story if they've ever deal with any feelings of loneliness, depression, or not belonging. The art and letters by Sam Beck synchronize so perfectly with the themes and feelings that it seems Matthew Erman was going for to elevate it to an instant classic in my book. I do not do ratings but if I did, this would be a 5 star book. I hope you pick it up and listen to this interview.

Friend of the podcast Liana Kangas returns and brings with them Matthew Erman to talk about their newest collaboration for Mad Cave Studios Mariko Between Worlds. Mariko is a trippy sci-fi rom-com about losing a relationship but finding yourself. It's a fantastic graphic novel that wasn't at all what I was expecting and goes completely off the rails a few times in such a great way. Liana and Matthew are talented creators and wonderful humans and I cannot say enough great things about being able to chat with them on the podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. It’s finally happened. I got totally peer pressured into reading a comic. Not only that, but in getting the creators on the show too. Although let’s be real about Witchblood for a minute. I definitely would have read this anyway and thought that I should get the creators on the show. That cover + all the hype I’d seen about this one + Vault Comics = I’ll pick it up. It’s simple math. Listen in as Lisa Sterle and Matthew Erman (featuring a special appearance from their dog Rory) come talk about the creation of a comic about a biker witch from Mars (said only because it fits the reference I’m hoping you catch), working with someone you can’t really get away from, and more of an answer to my standard “Do you have any advice for people looking to get into making comics?” question than I’ve gotten from anyone so far. Not that I’m complaining at all. Learn such things as: How can you fit 90s anime and 50s style references into the same work? What should you look for when you’re looking for a publisher? Is it possible that neither Matthew nor Lisa has seen Avatar the Last Airbender? And why, disturbing as that fact is, it really is OK and we shouldn’t hate them for it. And so much more! This week we're racing to another time - and then back, and then forward, and then sort of sideways a couple of times. Time travel's complicated, kids. Thankfully, we've got "Sins of the Future" author Matthew Erman on the podcast to help us sort it all out. Which characters were almost part of Jen's new team? What artistic substance inspired Time Force Black? And what's so good about dueling first-person narration? All these questions answered - and more - on this episode of the Ranger Danger Boom Room!

Join host Christopher Calloway and artist Emily Pearson for the Creator Talks last podcast of 2019! This week, writer M.L. Miller returns to talk about the conclusion of Gravetrancers from Black Mask Studios. This has been a trippy and unpredictable read. No character is safe from this insanity. The fourth and final issue of Gravetrancers is due out on July 25th. You can find more from M.L. Miller at his official site, MLMillerWrites.com. He also has his own podcast called Spoiler Alert. In other news, the first volume of Long Lost from previous guest, Matthew Erman and artist Lisa Sterle is now out in stores. This collects the first six issues of the series so if you slept on this in single issues, you can pick it up in the trade paperback. On the Kickstarter front, past guest Mike Garley has returned with more Samurai Slasher. This time it’s a Survive Your Own Adventure book. That’s right.
