Shoot us a Text. It's the last week of the month, so go finish strong! Today, we're covering how the public dealership groups made out in Q3, plus a survey that says a majority of Americans are interested in test driving an EV and another survey that says we see the same add too many times.Lithia & Driveway, AutoNation, and Sonic Automotive report contrasting Q3 financial results, marked by cyberattack impacts, record revenues, and operational successes in both new and used vehicle segments. With a record Q3 revenue of $9.2 billion (up 11% YOY), Lithia saw used car sales jump 18.4%, as its network of 300+ dealerships continued acquisitions.Profit per unit fell significantly, with gross margins declining from 7.2% to 6.6% in used cars, as rising operational costs impacted both new and used vehicle profit margins.AutoNation Q3 revenue declined 4% to $6.6 billion, with a 9% drop in gross profit attributed to the ongoing effects of the June CDK cyberattack that disrupted operations.CEO Mike Manley praised the team's resilience, citing strong performance in new car and after-sale services as key drivers to offset declines in other areas.EchoPark, Sonic Automotive's used-car division, set a new Q3 record with $55.2 million in gross profit, alongside a 131% YOY increase in net income, thanks to efficient cost-cutting and targeted downsizing of underperforming stores.Despite a 7% drop in unit sales, cost savings drove up per-unit gross profit to $3,111, showcasing resilience in a challenging market.A recent Consumer Reports survey shows that many Americans are still interested in exploring electric vehicles, with 50% of Americans saying they'd consider test-driving an EV during their next dealership visitOnly 37% are not interested in a test drive, with concerns including the availability of charging stations, battery durability, and high upfront costs.20% of consumers seeking hybrids or EVs reported dissatisfaction with dealership information, while another 46% felt only "somewhat satisfied.""Consumer interest in cleaner vehicle types continues to be strong, but many consumers still have a lot of questions." said Chris Harto, senior policy analyst at Consumer ReportsAD-ID's latest survey highlights ad fatigue as a growing influence on consumer behavior, with a significant portion of U.S. adults feeling increasingly disinclined to engage with brands that overuse ad repetition.61% of adults report reduced interest in brands showing repeated ads and 49% admit skipping a product purchase due to excessive ad exposure.Younger adults, men, and parents express heightened annoyance with repeat ads.76% prefer ads that align with their interests; 63% say fresh, relevant ads drive new purchases.“The next step will be knowing how many times [seeHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Episode 29 - Murdock and Marvel: 1989 Part 2 This week we finish up the 80s, and see what another round of Batmania can do to and for the comics world. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1989. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #262- 275, Marvel Tales #222, Marvel Comics Presents #19, Saga of the Sub-Mariner #9, What if…? #1-2, Excalibur #14, Wolverine #17 Writing credits: Ann Nocenti (262-275) Nocenti & Romita Jr (266 - Plot by Nocenti and Romita Jr., script by Nocenti) Pencilers: John Romita Jr (262-263, 265-275), Steve Ditko (264) Inks: Al Williamson (262-263, 265-275), Mike Manley and Williamson (264) As the year begins, Daredevil is still missing and presumed dead. Though Daredevil is coached (taunted) by to live by his old mentor Stick. Meanwhile NYC is seeing objects come to life and attacking humans (Think Maximum Overdrive) – which seems to be part of the inferno event. Upon going to the hospital, Karen and Mary show up to visit and Karen learns Matt has been cheating on her. After an issue hiatus featuring the Owl and the Bombers because John Romita Jr was getting married and wasn't available to draw, we see a resolution of sorts with Daredevil taking down a demon onslaught. After spending Christmas in a bar with Mephisto as Daredevil, Matt burns all his belongings and leaves NYC. What followings is a string of stories about Murdock being a loner and helping out as Daredevil when he can. He saves a man from a crashed plane, helps a man get out of an illegal loansharking business, saves a mutant girl from Blob and Pyro. In September we see Daredevil and Spider-Man team up. This will be our spotlight story for the week. Next Daredevil helps Brandy Ash expose her father's inhumane animal farm – which leads to release of young woman who was being experimented on known as number 9. This led to a multi-book story arch that finished out the year by introduced a new villain, Shotgun, and brought in the inhumans. The year ends with a second December book that was part of the Acts of Vengeance event and shows Doctor Doom reviving Ultron and orders it to destroy Daredevil but it is conflicted by all the previous versions of itself and meeting Number 9. New Powers, Toys or Places: half the year takes place outside of New York city, but seemly not outside New York state – in various small towns. New Supporting Characters: Amanda (young mutant saved from Freedom Force), Brandy Ash (young ecologist who doesn't like her father's farm), Number 9 (young woman experimented on by Skip Ash), inhumans (Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon Petragon, Karnak Mander-Azur) New Villains: Mephisto (demon lord who has drinks with Daredevil in a bar as a young woman), Blackheart (Mephisto's “son”), Freedom Force (Blob, Pyro and Spiral), Skip Ash (terrible human to animals and young women), Shotgun (special forces in the military and member of the CIA called on by Skip Ash) This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #270 September 1989 “Blackheart” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway So how is that “comics are dying” idea going a decade later? Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm. You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/. The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts. Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data. Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

This is a question asked in a WSJ article as the groundbreaking language model has become worse at performing certain basic math operations, according to new research by Stanford University and UC Berkeley. The research tested two versions of ChatGPT, 3.5 and 4.0, and found that the latter's accuracy in identifying prime numbers dropped from 84% to 51% between March and June.Six out of eight tasks saw worsening performance in the newer version, while the older version showed improvement in six areas but still remained less capable in most tasks. The article implies that "prompt engineering" can induce drift in AI models. In attempts to prevent inappropriate AI responses, developers may inadvertently impair the AI's capabilities in areas like math problem-solving.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Greetings from the CDB Crew (on The Satellite of Love)! This week, Carrie chose for all of us to read Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Comic by (deep breath) Joel Hodgson, Harold Buchholz, Matt McGinnis, Seth Robinson, Sharyl Volpe, Mary Robinson, Todd Nuack, Wes Dzioba, Mike Manley, Jack Pollock, Mimi Simon, and Michael Heisler, published by Dark Horse comics. Though everyone on the panel might not have fully enjoyed this adaptation, they all definitely agreed on how awesome the Crow-Keeper was and how he needs to be in more things very soon. This was a very interesting episode audibly, as well. Brian and Carrie's dog was in a very needy mood and you can here him whining in the background, here and there, throughout the recording. Also, stick around after the credits for old timey phone and fire alarm shenanigans! DIY Corner this week is a new comic by Jeremy Holt on Tapas and tribute to British Girls comics from the 1960s. Other comics discussed on this issue: What's the Furthest Place from Here? by Matthew Rosenberg, Tyler Boss, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Image); Chicken Devil #1 by Brian Buccellato, Hayden Sherman and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Aftershock); Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur (WebToon); and Puu (பூ ) by Nabi (Tapas). In this episode, Greg, Leon and Rahul are joined by special guest Marvyn For the fourth installment in our epic discussion and breakdown of BATMAN: KNIGHTFALL (https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Batman:_Knightfall). Bane has been defeated by a new, darker, reckless and more violent Batman and now he rules the night. Jean-Paul Valley for better or worse wears the cowl… What follows is our discussion and the highlights of his career as Batman! It’s all mostly mercs and hitmen from here on out… We cover: -Detective Comics #667-675 -Robin #1-2 -Batman: Shadow Of The Bat #19-20 and #24-28 -Batman #501-508 -Catwoman #6-7 -Showcase ’94 #7 This is the portion of the Knightfall epic known as “KNIGHTQUEST: THE CRUSADE” (https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Batman:_Knightquest) and covers Jean-Paul Valley's tenure as Batman and time in the cowl, in Gotham. It is at this point that there is a fork in the path for the Knightfall saga and as mentioned in previous episodes in this series “KNIGHTQUEST: THE SEARCH” (https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Batman:_Knightquest) is the other part of the story, concerning Bruce Wayne's recovery and globetrotting quest to rescue Dr Kinsolving and Tim Drake's Father. In reading order we have put "The Search" after "The Crusade" although the events are happening simultaneously. We also discuss "The Search" broadly at the beginning of this episode, but we ultimately decided to give more time to "The Crusade" because it is the better written and more interesting side of events. "The Search" covers: -Justice League Task Force #5-6, -Batman: Shadow Of The Bat #21-23, -Batman: Legends Of The Dark Knight #59-61 -Robin #7 Send any questions or feedback to (mailto:acecomicals@gmail.com) acecomicals@gmail.com. Darkhawk first appeared in a self titled series from 1991-1995. The main character, Chris Powell, witnessed his policeman father accept a bribe from a crime boss at an abandoned amusement park. While there he discovered an amulet that allowed him to switch places with an android located in another dimension known as Null Space that he could control with his mind. He used this android to combat villains. Darkhawk had his own title for around 50 issues. Watch this video to see if this new iteration of Darkhawk is enough to bring him to prominence. Over the past two years, Fiat Chrysler has seen some dramatic highs and some crushing lows. After the automaker endured the sudden passing of longtime leader Sergio Marchionne in 2018, it concluded 2019 with a binding agreement to merge with Peugeot to form the world’s fourth largest car company.Sandwiched in between these events was FCA’s quiet settlement of a lawsuit that stemmed from a 2016 case where the company was accused of manipulating dealer sales figures. A group of dealers in Illinois had held fast to a lawsuit claiming FCA was guilty of racketeering and anticompetitive practices when it pressured dealers to inflate sales numbers in exchange for a greater allotment of the fastest-selling models. And while FCA settled this dealer suit and averted a lawsuit, it appears they weren’t able to breathe easy for long. Automotive News is reporting that a new group of dealers, this time in New York, is threatening FCA with a lawsuit for an entirely different reason. The New York State Automobile Dealers Association has reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to Fiat Chrysler, alleging the auto maker’s dealer incentives give an unfair advantage to larger dealerships.Fiat Chrysler is attempting to clear inventory at the manufacturing level, a strategy designed to avoid saddling plants with thousands of unassigned vehicles when dealer orders mismatch what’s been produced. This year, FCA is offering dealers a $1,500 voucher for every vehicle they buy from the inventory pool and some angry dealers say this is tantamount to 2-tiered pricing: rewarding larger dealers -- those, typically, with more cash to carry inventory -- by selling them vehicles at a lower price.According to Automotive News, Fiat Chrysler claims its vehicle surplus is due to a production method that’s been trimming costs at the manufacturing level and not, as the dealers claim, because it’s over-producing and pressuring dealers to ease the glut. Bloomberg reported last fall that CEO Mike Manley said that “Working with our dealer network to achieve and maintain discipline with stock levels continues to be one of (the company’s) top priorities.”

Show #500 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 14th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. For show 500 I welcome two new Patreon supporters. New PRODUCER BILL CLISHAM and new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ROB HERMANS. "I’ve been listening to your excellent podcast for a few months and it’s better than sliced bread! I’ve learned SO much and really feel in touch with all of the most recent developments in EV land, thanks to you. With your 500th episode coming up, I have decided to become a patron and help you keep up this amazing effort. More power (clean, electric power!) to you, my friend!" My weekend watch recommendation is Bjorn Nyland taking his Model 3 Performance on the German Autobahn at 233kmh. RHD TESLA MODEL 3'S ARRIVE IN UK From R Symons: "Trucks now heading from Dover to London with the first RHD’s for delivery next week. Next Thursday 20/06/19 is D day for my model 3 performance! First UK batch must have been on Grand Dahlia." The white option for interior is back in the design studio. And finally the least important part of the show...the Supercharger Route Planner still only gives you option to plan a route for a Model S or X. ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE SAVED 3.6 BILLION LITRES OF FUEL IN THE US The transition to electric vehicles has saved 3.6 billion litres of fuel in the US, with a third of that saved in 2018 alone, new figures from the US Department of Energy have shown." reports Bridie for driven.io: "With more than 1.2 million light plug-in (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) now sold in the US alone, amounting to 25 billion miles (40 billion kilometres) driven by PHEVs and BEVs since 2010, fuel consumption by light vehicles has been reduced by 0.23 per cent, the report says. Electric vehicles are still more efficient, even when powered by coal-sourced electricity. But even so, the source of that electricity may bear consideration. In California, 40 per cent of electricity generation is consumed by the transport sector, according to the EIA using data from 2017 – making it the biggest consumer of electricity." https://thedriven.io/2019/06/14/electric-vehicles-have-saved-3-6-billion-litres-of-fuel-in-the-us/ PORSCHE TAYCAN SPIED DURING TIRE-SCREECHING TEST AT THE 'RING More video online of the Porsche Taycan: "Confirmed for a September reveal, the company’s very first EV has been caught for the umpteenth time at the Nürburgring flaunting those hilarious “exhausts” to prove the Germans do have a sense of humor." writes Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "You might be tempted to say the zero-emissions sedan was not wearing any camouflage, but as it approaches a roundabout at the 1:11 mark, we can see it had quite a lot of black tape on the body and also stickers masking the lights. Later in the video, around the 4:15 mark, the prototype is seen in traffic passing by a gas station to reveal its deceiving body-colored camouflage also used by other future members of the Volkswagen Group family." https://www.motor1.com/news/354516/porsche-taycan-spy-video-nurburgring/ FCA SIGNS PARTNERSHIPS WITH ENEL X AND ENGIE GROUP Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has signed two agreements for new e-Mobility solutions to support the production and distribution of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full-electric (BEV) models rolling out as part of the Group’s 2018-2022 business plan. Through these agreements, FCA dealers will be able to offer innovative charging solutions and services to retail and business customers. This initiative also includes research and testing of new technologies to reduce the total cost of ownership of electrified vehicles. Mike Manley, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said: “These partnerships build on the e-mobility strategy we announced last year as part of our five-year business plan We are assembling an eco-system of partners, products and services across multiple markets to meet and exceed the rapidly evolving expectations of our customers for electrified vehicles.” The primary objective of the two partnerships is to offer private and public charging solutions to support sales of FCA’s forthcoming electric vehicle line-up including the soon-to-be-launched Fiat 5oo BEV and Jeep Renegade PHEV. . This includes offering customers the option of installing a home charging point (or “wallbox”) suited to their specific requirements, including charging optimization and smart management. Each partner will support FCA customers with the preliminary feasibility assessment and installation of the wallbox, as well as ongoing management and maintenance throughout the life of the customer vehicle and wallbox. In addition to home charging points, customers will also be offered cost-efficient and convenient access to public charging solutions. FCA and its partners will collaborate on the development of apps that will enable customers to locate public charging points, as well as book and pay for charging services via their vehicle’s integrated connectivity capability. 2019 JAGUAR I-PACE EV400 HSE REVIEW Brandon Turkus at Motor1 has driven the Jaguar I-PACE and written his review: "With 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque, the I-Pace’s twin electric motors sit neatly between the E-Tron (355 hp and 414 lb-ft of torque, boosted to 402 hp and 490 lb-ft in Boost Mode) and EQC (402 hp and 561 lb-ft). And yet, the Jag is quicker than both its German rivals, taking just 4.5 seconds to hit 60 compared to 5.5 in the Audi and 4.8 in the EQC. The way the Jag gets to that speed, though, is very similar to the Germans. This is an electric car, and its two motors dole out torque-rich performance in big, immediately available lumps. Part of that is down to the single-speed automatic transmission. It’s quick to engage, so there’s hardly any waiting while the torque gets to the ground. But the I-Pace’s handling differs from its rivals. This is a charming dance partner, tipping the scales at a light (for the segment) 4,784 pounds. Its lower center of gravity – the I-Pace is only 61.3 inches tall, over two inches lower than the next closest rival, the 63.9-inch EQC – and more aggressive air suspension deliver a sharper, flatter handling character. You want to toss the I-Pace around and have some fun with it; take advantage of the quick steering and the darty way it can change directions. It’s quite a change of pace from taller, heavier rivals that focus on ride comfort." https://www.motor1.com/reviews/354870/2019-jaguar-i-pace-ev400-hse-review/ VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R RETURNS TO GOODWOOD WITH SPECIAL SPRINT VERSION "Volkswagen announced the return of the I.D. R to the Goodwood Festival of Speed (4 to 7 July) to defend its record EV time of 43.86 seconds from 2018." says InsideEVs.com: "While a year ago the German manufacturer simply used the same technical configuration as at the much longer and more demanding Pikes Peak hill climb, this year Volkswagen developed a special sprint version of the I.D. R. It will be equipped with smaller and lighter, high-power battery pack just for the 1.86-kilometer route, which gives hope to not only improve the record but maybe set an all-time record for the track (41.6 by Nick Heidfeld in McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car in 1999)." https://insideevs.com/news/354805/volkswagen-id-r-returns-goodwood-sprint-version/ FUEL CELL FERRY WATER GO ROUND FINDS FLEET INVESTMENT "The hydrogen ferry Water Go Round currently under construction in the US has found new funding for setting up an entire fleet. SW/TCH Maritime, an investment platform for all kinds of electric maritime vessels is now on board." says electrive.com: "A first unit of the 84-passenger ferry powered by fuel cells is currently under construction at the Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard in California and set for completion this September. The next step will be a three-month trial in the San Francisco Bay, also to act as a flagship for SW/TCH’s future fleet. The tanks will hold up to 264 kg of hydrogen, which is enough to run the ferry for two days straight, according to the manufacturers. For refilling the tanks, SW/TCH is partnering with Clean Marine Energy (CME) to develop electric charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure onshore." https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/13/fuel-cell-ferry-water-go-round-finds-fleet-investment/ TESLA IS DELIVERING 1,000 CARS A DAY EN ROUTE TO RECORD QUARTER "Electrek has learned that Tesla is currently delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day. As we reported earlier this month, Tesla aims to deliver between 33,000 and 36,000 vehicles in June in North America to break its delivery record." says Fred Lambert: "According to sources familiar with the matter, Tesla has been delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day in North America so far this month. Furthermore, there are almost 7,000 more deliveries planned over the next 7 days and even more last-minute deliveries are expected over the last week of the quarter as buyers try to get deliveries before the now $3,750 federal tax credit on Tesla vehicles goes down again. It’s important to keep in mind that even if Tesla doesn’t achieve this record, they are still delivering all-electric vehicles at a higher pace than any other automaker at this point. By a huge margin. In North America, Tesla is delivering more EVs in 3 days than GM is delivering in a whole month." https://electrek.co/2019/06/14/tesla-delivering-1000-cars-day-record-quarter/ HYUNDAI KONA EV #1 IN NETHERLANDS IN MAY "The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive month in May, with 2,688 plug-in vehicle registrations — up 193% year over year (YoY). That translated into a PEV share of 7.3% on the broader auto market. The year-to-date (YTD) count is now up to 15,537 units, with the 2019 PEV share at 8.3%, well above the 6% of last year." reports CleanTechnica: "If we only consider fully electric vehicles (BEVs), the EV share last month was 6.3%, with the 2019 share being 7%. A bit surprisingly, the VW e-Golf was 4th, with 227 units, a meritable performance for a model that is less than a year from being replaced by the much more competitive VW ID.3. I guess name recognition is a strong point here." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/14/hyundai-kona-ev-1-in-netherlands-in-may-tesla-model-3-still-1-in-2019/ RIVIAN'S USED BATTERIES WILL HELP SUPPORT "Now, we have an idea of what Rivian wants to do with its batteries once they're no longer usable in its vehicles." says Roadshow by CNET: "Rivian announced this week that it has teamed up with the Honnold Foundation, which funds solar power initiatives, for a future project that will use Rivian's "second-life" batteries, also known as a used EV battery that's already done its time in an electric vehicle. The project will see these batteries as gateways to energy independence and renewable power generation, and it'll kick off in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Using the 135-kilowatt-hour battery packs from its development vehicles, Rivian will take these batteries and move them into small modules that can collect power from solar panels or other sources, reducing reliance on the grid." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-used-batteries-energy-independence-project/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… Should EVs still qualify for special treatment and incentives – financial, convenience (ie driving in bus lanes) etc I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 220 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BILL FORD SAYS ELECTRIC MUSTANG CROSSOVER WILL 'GO LIKE HELL' "Ford is dead serious about its electrification plans. The Blue Oval company wants to have a hybrid, PHEV, or all-electric version of its every model, and, in addition, it will launch a number of completely new nameplates with electric powertrains. One of these new members of the lineup will be a Mustang-inspired crossover which is scheduled to arrive on the market sometime next year." reports Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "Emphasizing Ford’s new strategy, the automaker’s Executive Chairman Bill Ford said the Mustang-inspired electric crossover "is going to go like hell." "When we first started talking about electrification, there was this thought that there had to be a trade-off: it was either going to be green and boring and no fun, or really exciting but burn a lot of fossil fuels," Bill Ford said during the Crain's Detroit Business Newsmaker of the Year luncheon. "Electrification has come to the point that you can do both." https://www.motor1.com/news/306870/ford-mustang-electric-crossover-go-hell/ KIA REVEALS NEW E-SOUL FOR EUROPE: TWO BATTERY OPTIONS "The next-generation Kia Soul EV, under the new name of Kia e-Soul, is coming to Europe where sales will begin by the end of the fourth quarter. Pricing will be announced later." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "Kia will unveil the new e-Soul at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show (the car debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show). The European version will be offered in two versions, which shares batteries/powertrains with Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric: Long-range: 64 kWh battery and 150 kW electric motor. Standard: 39.2 kWh battery and 100 kW electric motor. The Long-range version will be able to go 452 km (280 miles) according to WLTP test cycle, compared to an EPA rating of 243 miles (391 km) in the U.S. The Standard version will go 277 km (172 miles) WLTP. Kia boasts that the new battery cells have 25% higher energy density (250 Wh/kg vs 200 Wh/kg), while the new powertrain is 30% more efficient than “Europe’s current best-selling electric car”. The new electric Soul breaks with CHAdeMO and is equipped with CCS charging inlet for DC fast charging (up to 100 kW)" https://insideevs.com/kia-announced-new-e-soul-for-europe-unveiling-in-geneva/ SEAT LOOKS TO THE FUTURE OF CITY MOBILITY WITH THE MINIMÓ ELECTRIC QUADRICYCLE "SEAT is taking a giant leap in its urban micromobility strategy with the presentation of the Minimó at this year’s Mobile World Congress, a concept car that has been developed as a mobility platform, showcasing the company’s vision of the urban mobility of tomorrow. The Minimó brings together the benefits of the smaller dimensions of a motorcycle with the safety and comfort of a larger passenger vehicle, minimising the many frustrations of travelling around our cities." FCA WILL SPEND $4.5 BILLION IN MICHIGAN TO BUILD ELECTRIFIED JEEP WAGONEER "Fiat Chrysler just announced a $4.5 billion investment in Michigan manufacturing facilities, including a new one in the city of Detroit set to build an “all-new three-row full-size Jeep SUV,” as well as investment in five other plants, one of which will build the next-gen Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer—both with electrified variants." says Jalopnik: "FCA says its Warren, JNAP, and Mack assembly plants will crank out plug-in hybrid versions of the vehicles built there, and that there will be “flexibility to build fully battery-electric models in the future.” CEO Mike Manley says in a quote that FCA plans to build at least four plug-in hybrid Jeeps." https://jalopnik.com/fca-will-spend-4-5-billion-in-michigan-to-build-cars-l-1832903198 BYTON M-BYTE ELECTRIC SUV HEADED FOR MASS PRODUCTION THIS YEAR "The electric vehicle startup BYTON is said to unveil the mass-produced model of the screen-filled M-Byte in the middle of 2019 and the vehicle’s presale will start at the same time" according to InsideEVs: "The M-Byte concept was first shown at the CES 2018. With shorter front and rear overhangs, the BEV model gets more room for passengers. Boasting a futuristic gene, it is outfitted with such configurators as LED headlights, luminous marks, two-tone vehicle body as well as the trendy taillight cluster that stretches across the rear end." https://insideevs.com/byton-m-byte-electric-suv-headed-for-mass-production-this-year/ POLL SUGGESTS MORE AMERICANS MIGHT BUY AN EV—IF ONLY THEY HAD A PLACE TO CHARGE "Almost three-quarters of Americans see electric cars as the future of transportation, according to a new Volvo/Harris poll released Tuesday" report Eric at GreenCarReports: "In the poll conducted last October, which surveyed 1,510 drivers in the U.S. during the middle of October, including 250 electric-car drivers, 74 percent of all respondents agreed that electric cars are the future. Among EV drivers, the number rose to 79 percent. The biggest obstacle wasn't range but available charging infrastructure: 61 percent of respondents cited more charging infrastructure as the biggest factor holding back their purchase." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121698_poll-suggests-more-americans-might-buy-an-evif-only-they-had-a-place-to-charge 24M DELIVERS FIRST COMMERCIAL SCALE, HIGH ENERGY DENSITY SEMI-SOLID NMC LI-ION CELLS Finally to Green Car Congress: "24M announced that it has developed and delivered commercially-viable, high energy density lithium-ion cells. Using its novel SemiSolid lithium-ion battery design in its pilot facility (earlier post), 24M achieved energy densities exceeding 250 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), the current state-of-the-art industry benchmark for EV applications. The demonstration of this technology is a major milestone on the 24M roadmap to achieving even higher energy densities (>400 Wh/kg) using its capital-efficient manufacturing process." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/02/20190226-24m.html COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Frank Miller calls Pratt "one of the true masters of comic art." Long before the term "graphic novel" entered the popular lexicon - ten years before Will Eisner's A Contract with God - Hugo Pratt pioneered the long-form "drawn literature" story. Corto Maltese set the standard for all adult adventure comics in Europe. By the mid-1970s, Corto was the continent's most popular series and Hugo Pratt the world's leading graphic novelist. Hugo Pratt's peripatetic sailor was featured in a series of twenty-nine stories. The adventures of this modern Ulysses are set during the first thirty years of the 20th Century in such exotic locales as Pratt's native Venice, the steppes of Manchuria, the Caribbean islands, the Danakil deserts, the Amazon forests, and the waves of the Pacific. EuroComics is working closely with Patrizia Zanotti, Pratt's long-time collaborator, to present the complete Corto Maltese in a series of twelve quality trade paperbacks in Pratt's original oversized B&W format. Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn collects the first six inter-connected short stories Pratt created in France in the early 1970s: "The Secret of Tristan Bantam," "Rendez-vous in Bahia," "Sureshot Samba," "The Brazilian Eagle," "So Much for Gentlemen of Fortune," and "The Seagull's Fault." Daily story #249 A Reckoning with the Nomad has certainly been one of the most fascinating newspaper stories of recent times. It's been a seminal story in the development of Heloise in particular, and has been an action-packed culmination of a seven year battle between Kit Walker and Eric Sahara. In this episode of X-Band we are privileged enough to talk to author Tony DePaul and artist Mike Manley about the story, the creative process, phans' reactions, character development, inspirations, the future... it's an incredibly revealing and insightful conversation.Clearly you will need to have read the story to get the most out of this chat. If you've fallen behind you can check it out here https://comicskingdom.com/phantom/2018-02-19 It's well worth the read - it honestly is a great story! We'd also recommend watching the YouTube version of the podcast as we show all the panels we're talking about during the video conversation.

In a very special X-Band, recorded on the 82nd anniversary of the debut of the newspaper strip, the phellas are lucky enough to talk to current The Phantom Daily artist, Mike Manley.Mike has worked on the Phantom for almost two years, and on Judge Parker for eight years, so he has a wealth of experience when it comes to the schedules and deadlines that face a comic strip artist in 2018.Mike tells us about his history as a comic book artist, animator and teacher. We discuss his process in drawing the strip and the balance of digital vs pen and paper, as well as using assistants. The Left Bank 2 Last week Autoline Detroit began its coverage of the 2010 Paris Motor Show with four different interviews. This week we've decided to emulate the Seine River, take a couple of twists and turns and do something a bit more avant-garde. Yes, we still have a couple of in-depth automotive interviews that you've come to expect in Autoline Detroit such as talks with J Mays from Ford and Mike Manley from Jeep. But in addition, this week you'll get something completely different. In fact, get ready for John McElroy to take you on a walking tour. Not of Paris mind you, but of some of the brands of cars that populate the city, the country, the entire European Community and that you never see here in the states. From Lancia, to Renault to Alfa Romeo and more, John goes from booth to booth sharing with us some of the history of the brand and as well as why these European vehicles may be influencing what we park in our driveways in the coming years. Oh, and don't miss our preview of the Special Edition Autoline Detroit that we shot in the Ligurian Alps just above Nice. That's also in this week's wrap-up from the Paris Motor Show.

Grand Re-Opening Fourteen months ago Chrysler was closing down. We're all familiar with the strange turns the story took. From bankruptcy to Obama to Italy and back, Chrysler survived, jobs were saved and the Pentastar was back in business. Well almost. There was that little thing about new product; it didn't have any and wasn't expected for some time. With its competitors pumping out fresh cars and trucks seemingly each month, it didn't seem like a scenario for success. But somehow, someway Chrysler cobbled together a year of better sales with that aged product and, lo and behold, today it finally has something it hasn't had in over twelve months: a new vehicle in the form of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Now it still is the "only" new vehicle available to its dealers for the near future but don't try to rain on Mike Manley's parade with that observation. Jeep's President and CEO is excited about this brand new SUV and what it says about his brand, the company's upcoming products and the future of the new Chrysler itself. For a closer look at this all new Grand Cherokee, the Jeep brand and how it fits into Sergio Marchionne's plan for Chrysler, join John McElroy as he welcomes Mike Manley as his guest on this week's Autoline Detroit. Joining John on his panel are Bob Gritzinger from AutoWeek and Scott Burgess of The Detroit News.
