Guest Sylvia Huron has had a deep love for fishing from an early age, a passion instilled in her by her father. Her son Ian introduced her to fly fishing. For Sylvia, this was a welcome challenge, and the introduction to the fly-fishing community was just what she needed. Sylvia has been in recovery since 2018 and is passionate about supporting the recovery community. Fly fishing has been a source of peace and healing for Sylvia, so sharing this with others is deeply fulfilling for her. In 2021, Sylvia, her son Ian, and Jennifer Gilbert joined founder Becca Klein in establishing Reeling in Serenity. Reeling in Serenity hosts free fly-fishing retreats for men and women in active recovery from substance abuse. On January 1st, 2024, Sylvia accepted the position of Executive Director for Reeling in Serenity. You picked the wrong girl, and I just said to myself, GET UP! This is not your life, and if you allow this situation and this person to derail your dreams and your future, and what you wanted, then he may as well have killed you, so GET UP!” -Jennifer Gilbert “There is no contest when it comes to how somebody feels about a situation like we're all just in our own stuff, so it's not a, worse or better, it's just a relative.” [24:50] -Jennifer Gilbert “It really is a shift, because once you realize all I can do is control myself when I wake up or control my emotions about a situation, then you take back the power in your life, and so fear doesn't become this huge thing that is looming out there.” [28:50] -Jennifer Gilbert “Incredibly triumphant things can come out of the face of trauma.” - Dr. Meghan Walker “So for me I was like well it already happened and I couldn't control it and I can't control anything else that's ever gonna happen in this life, but I can control myself and I can make a decision on how I'm going to handle this and who I'm going to be afterwards.” - Jennifer Gilbert “So I think not having fear about what's going to happen allows you as an entrepreneur to throw your idea out there or to say I'm gonna try it cuz what's the worst that can happen, it won't happen. Okay, well so what else? Try something else.” - Jennifer Gilbert

Season 9 continues!!! We meet Jennifer Gilbert - curator, gallerist and longterm champion of Outsider Art - to discuss the work of leading Japanese artist Shinichi Sawada on the occasion of his first solo exhibition in New York at the awesome Venus Over Manhattan gallery. If you're in New York, we STRONGLY recommend visiting this extraordinary new show!!!!Thirty-eight year old Shinichi Sawada has kept the same schedule for nearly twenty years. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, he attends Nakayoshi Fukushikai, a social welfare facility in Japan’s Shiga prefecture, where he spends the morning working at the in-house bakery, making bread. He spends the afternoons working with clay. Sawada first attended this facility, one of many similar institutions in Japan designed to support people with intellectual disabilities, when he was eighteen years old, shortly after he was diagnosed with autism. In the two decades since, his ceramic beasts – sometimes ghoulish, always fantastical, and deeply redolent of ancient mythologies still coursing through Japanese culture – have attracted the attention of critics and connoisseurs worldwide, notably after a presentation at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013.Venus' current showcase of thirty of Sawada’s ceramic sculptures follows a recent museum solo exhibition that traveled in fall 2020 from the Museum Lothar Fischer, in Neumarkt, Germany, to the George Kolbe Museum, Berlin. On view through late March, the Venus exhibition has been organized in collaboration with Jennifer Lauren Gallery, Manchester, UK, who has worked with the artist for many years. In conjunction with its presentation, Venus will publish a generously illustrated catalogue featuring new and recent writing on Sawada’s art.Shinichi Sawada (b. 1982) lives and works in Japan’s Shiga prefecture. Since 2000, he has attended Nakayoshi Fukushikai, a social welfare facility that supports people with intellectual disabilities. In 2020, a solo exhibition of his work traveled from the Museum Lothar Fischer in Neumarkt, to the George Kolbe Museum in Berlin. His work has featured prominently in major group exhibitions around the world, including “The Encyclopedic Palace” at the 55th Venice Biennale, curated by Massimiliano Gioni, and “The Doors of Perception” at Frieze New York in 2019. His work is held in the permanent collections of numerous public institutions, including the Collection de l’Art Brut, Lausanne; the abcd collection, Paris; and Halle Saint Pierre, Paris.Shinichi Sawada runs until March 20, 2021 at Venus Over Manhattan, New York. “You can quit waiting for the other shoe to drop: I’m in it for life,” are the promising words that convinced author Kathryn Taylor to remarry, retire from her thirty-year profession, sell her home, and uproot to Charleston to support her new husband’s career. Life was honest and full of celebration when, out of nowhere, Kathryn’s husband announced that he was done with the marriage and didn't want to talk about it. At minute 7:30, Kathryn joins Chelsea to talk about it. LaFern Cusack talks LA River cleanup with FOLAR's Marissa Christiansen and then I:CO's Jennifer Gilbert joins the show to discuss recycling clothing for Earth Day.
Jennifer Gilbert, a wildly successful events entrepreneur, was assaulted to an inch within her life outside her friend’s New York apartment. Not only did she survive but she went on to live a very rich and fulfilling life. How? The struggle was all too real. It wasn’t an overnight transformation. She was able to recognize the vast, and sometimes elusive, source of resilience that she discovered that day and draw on it to create the kind of life she always wanted. Her story is jarring, graphic, visceral, enraging, senseless, but at the same time life affirming, hopeful, and deeply important. Lessons: 1. The resilient person that you are in your most challenging moments is there for life to aid you whenever the need should arise. 2. Fear is the worst feeling to make a decision from. 3. Beautiful things often grow from dark, ugly places like flowers from compost. 4. You cannot control one thing in the world except who you are afterwards, whether you move towards the light or wallow in the darkness.
