How should Christians approach immigration, justice, and faith in today's cultural climate? In this episode of the Voxology Podcast, Mike and Tim dive into "Joyful, Peaceful, and Gracious Noncompliance," exploring what scripture teaches about welcoming the stranger, showing compassion, and advocating for justice. Drawing on the work of experts like Matthew Soerens and their own reflections, they tackle the complex intersections of cruciformity, faith and politics, and the role of the church in society. Through real-life stories, scripture analysis, and discussions on cultural challenges, they address the dehumanizing language often used in immigration debates, the tension between legality and justice, and the church's responsibility to embody the teachings of Jesus. What does it mean to love our neighbor, especially when they are vulnerable? How can the church navigate these issues with humility, courage, and hope? Engage with thoughtful insights, critical questions, and a call to action to advocate for justice in peaceful, gracious ways. Feel free to email your questions, share your perspectives on social media, and join the conversation as we pursue faithfulness to Jesus in a complex world. Together, let's reflect on how Christianity can shape a more just and compassionate society. #news #newstoday #greencard #biblestudy #faithandjustice Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Context of Immigration Discussion 02:50 Personal Stories and Anecdotes on Immigration 06:06 The Role of the Church in Immigration Issues 09:05 Current Administration's Immigration Policies 11:58 Language and Rhetoric in Immigration Discourse 14:51 Understanding Different Types of Immigrants 17:46 Legal Status and Its Implications 21:01 Biblical Perspectives on Immigration 23:54 Theological Arguments for Compassionate Immigration Policies 27:12 Conclusion and Call to Action 51:12 The Call to Welcome Strangers 52:34 God's Heart for the Vulnerable 53:30 The Church as Foreigners and Exiles 58:12 Christian Identity and Immigration 01:01:51 Citizenship in the Kingdom of God 01:08:34 The Role of Government and Justice 01:15:21 Advocacy and Non-Compliance 01:21:47 The Church's Responsibility in Advocacy As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Discernment: Cruciformity is Active, Not Passive. On this episode of the Voxology podcast, Mike Erre and Tim Stafford focus on discernment in faith, the essence of Christian identity, and the importance of critiquing ideologies rather than individuals. They emphasize the need for community engagement and humanizing conversations across divides, particularly in the context of immigration and societal issues. Further, Tim and Mike explore the complexities of homelessness, systemic issues, and the role of faith in addressing societal challenges. They discuss the importance of understanding the root causes of homelessness, the church's responsibility in promoting human flourishing, and the significance of inclusivity at Jesus' table. The dialogue also delves into the church's political involvement, the concept of cruciformity, and the challenges of navigating emotional overload while advocating for justice. Ultimately, they emphasize the need for a Christ-like approach to engagement in the world. What happens when the very systems meant to help refugees end up hurting them instead?  And what can the Church do to help? In today's episode, Kent Annan and Dr. Jamie Aten talk with Matthew Soerens from World Relief about the real impact of U.S. refugee policies—especially the dramatic changes under the Trump administration.  Matt pulls back the curtain on what's happening behind the scenes: families stuck in limbo, staff furloughs at resettlement agencies, and churches stepping in to help. We also talk about how policy decisions can create ripple effects that last for years.  This episode is a must-listen for anyone who cares about justice, faith, and showing up for vulnerable communities. Plus, Matt shares ways churches can advocate, volunteer, and help cut through the noise to create real change. The first week of the second Trump administration has seen refugees cut off and January 6th criminals cut loose. Franklin Graham declared in his inauguration prayer that God himself had chosen the President. The MAGA faithful applauded this mix of Christian faith and politics, but when Bishop Budde asked the President to “show mercy” to frightened people during her homily at the National Cathedral, she was accused of everything from political activism to witchcraft. Phil has a theory about what these two religious leaders at the inauguration reveal about the state of American Christianity. Then Matthew Soerens from World Relief is back to discuss Trump's immediate shut down of all refugee resettlement, including cutting all financial aid previously promised to refugees already in the U.S. What's behind the President's aggressive policy, and how can we practically help our neighbors abandoned by the government that brought them here?  Influential pastor, author, and apologist, Tim Keller, passed away last week. We reflect on Keller's ministry and wonder who is filling the shoes of the Christian giants we've lost. A new book about poverty says that the U.S. spends more on welfare than any other country except France, but the majority goes to help the wealthy and middle-class rather than the poor. Why aren't we doing more to end poverty, and is our view of the Bible to blame? Then, it's been 25 years since Rich Mullins died. God is working in the nations in a way reminiscent of Revelation 7:9-10 kind of way, "After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. And they were shouting with a great roar, 'Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb!'”God has brought the nations to our shore in the West. You've undoubtedly seen the photos and videos streaming out of El Paso, Texas. Migrants running across highways, crowds camping out on the streets, and of course the stories of mayors and governors putting immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers on buses and sending them to other places in the United States. The images and headlines are hard to process. I invited Jenny Yang, the Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Policy at World Relief, onto the episode of All Things to help us sift through what's going on. Jenny and I discuss what's currently taking place at the border, how the situation got to be like it is, what Biden's visit to El Paso and his newly proposed legislation means, as well as what Christians ought to think about and do about immigration in our country. Jenny's expert and seasoned perspective is really helpful. It's true that monthly encounters between migrants—attempting to cross north into the United States from Mexico—and agents with the US border Patrol are at levels we have not seen for over two decades. In November 2022, for example, 206,239 encounters were reported, with most migrants coming from Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Peru and Venezuela (https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2023/01/13/monthly-encounters-with-migrants-at-u-s-mexico-border-remain-near-record-highs/). World Relief says, “Today, over 100 million people around the world have been forced to leave their home. Each day, that number grows by over 37,000. These families are fleeing for their lives, praying for their safety and desperately seeking refuge. If you're like us, you believe that everyone deserves a place to call ‘home'. You believe that families and young children deserve safety and security.”Jenny says, “Advocacy is speaking up with those who are vulnerable to address the underlying causes of injustice and oppression by influencing the policies and practices of people in power. We should love our neighbors on an interpersonal level. But when systemic injustice is at the root of a problem, loving our neighbor means advocacy as well. Advocacy consists of organized efforts and actions seeking to highlight critical issues, influence public attitudes and enact or implement laws and policies. It starts with the reality of “what is” so that a vision of “what should be” can be realized. The ultimate aim of advocacy is to demonstrate the good news of the coming of the Kingdom of God.” (https://worldrelief.org/blog-imagine-what-it-should-be/)Resources mentioned in this episode: World Relief - https://worldrelief.org/Women of Welcome - https://womenofwelcome.com/Welcoming the Stranger by Matthew Soerens and Jenny Yang - https://amzn.to/3wCa2Nn

For more than a century, the American church has been arguing about the exact scope and boundaries of God's mission. Is the gospel narrowly about the redemption of people's souls, or does it also care about redeeming the world, society, and broken systems? In other words, is justice part of God's gospel mission? The way we answer that question has massive implications for what work we believe ultimately matters. This debate has torn the American church apart, but it's not one shared by many of our sisters and brothers around the world where a holistic vision of God's mission is just assumed rather than contested. Pastor Luis Luna from Honduras joins Skye Jethani to discuss why he doesn't separate the care of people's souls, from the care of their bodies, or the reformation of society. And how this holistic approach to mission sometimes creates problems when well-meaning American Christians bring their narrow definition of the gospel to Central America.   “Inalienable: How Marginalized Kingdom Voices Can Help Save the American Church” by Eric Costanzo, Daniel Yang, and Matthew Soerens - https://amzn.to/3RyObjc 0:00 - Intro Interview with Luis Luna 2:41 - Luis' community and immigration 7:51 - Americans and cross-cultural mission 16:45 - Collaborative vision of mission 20:08 - Social justice and the gospel 26:43 - Social reform Sponsor 35:09 - Sponsor - World Relief Join the Path: https://worldrelief.org/holypost/ Debrief with Matthew Soerens and Eric Costanzo 37:22 - Positive role of short-term missions? 43:15 - Measuring successful mission 47:25 - Systemic problems and changes 57:50 - Gen Z hope 1:02:54 - Credits Other resources mentioned: Association For a More Just Society - https://www.asj-us.org Holy Post website: https://www.holypost.com/ Holy Post Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/holypost The Holy Post is supported by our listeners. The Bible is one of God's most important gifts to his people. Through it we discover who he is and become equipped to follow him in the world. But rather than a source of unity, for many Christians the Bible is a point of conflict and division—especially when we fail to recognize the difference between the Bible and our cultural interpretation of the Bible. My guest today, Lanre Williams-Ayedun, says one of best ways to overcome this danger is by engaging our sisters and brothers from other parts of the global church. How big is the scope of the gospel? What does God's kingdom include? And what happens when we discover the American church isn't the center of it? Based on the book Inalienable by Eric Costanzo, Daniel Yang, and Matthew Soerens, in this episode Skye Jethani (co-host of The Holy Post) talks to theologian and missiologist Dr. Ruth Padilla DeBorst. With extensive experience in the Latin American church, Padilla DeBorst explains how popular American Christianity misunderstands the Kingdom of God, and how seeking the wisdom of the global church can guild the American church through its current crisis. A network of global Christian churches have decided to combat climate change by divesting from gas and oil companies. But why aren't any Protestant American churches participating, and do climate activists care that efforts to replace fossil fuels disproportionately harm the poor? And a new article by Beth Allison Barr examines the difference between the political pro-life movement and the biblical pro-life ethic. Then, Matthew Soerens is back to discuss the new book he's co-authored with Eric Costanzo and Daniel Yang, “Inalienable: How Marginalized Kingdom Voices Can Help Save the American Church.” As white evangelicals lose their grip on cultural and political power in the U.S., Soerens says they may discover how to follow Christ more faithfully from sisters and brothers in the global church who never had power to begin with.
