Kyle and JJ take a trip down memory lane to discuss Invader Zim, the cult-favorite animated series by Jhonen Vasquez that aired on Nickelodeon from 2001 to 2002. The show follows Zim, an overzealous alien from the militaristic planet Irk, assigned to conquer Earth. Disguised as a human child, Zim enrolls in a local school to blend in and devise his plans for world domination. Known for its dark humor and unsettling themes, Invader Zim often pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable on a children's network. The show's unique style and twisted humor earned it a devoted fan base.

Can you even call it a return if the character didn't appear in previous films? For a film series based on found footage, this one sure does rely on things having already happened offscreen. I am truly puzzled by some of the choices this "retooling" did. Listen to some thoughts from me and Greg on the Paranormal Activity franchise as a whole and the truly surprising plot points of this new one, Paranormal Activity 7: Casper Returns. (More like Paranormie Activity, am I right? That reminds me: ParaNorman is worth watching, so check that out.) 7:30 - Jhonen Vasquez explains why you're watching Zim wrong. 8:20 - David Lynch on iPhone 9:45 - Family Guy - How David Lynch Stole Christmas! 15:30 - The Paranormal Activity wiki still needs to add the events of the seventh film and Tokyo Night to this (or maybe they're not sure how to given how messy the timeline is now), but here's the series timeline. 21:00 - We recorded this on April 13. Also, this is the 13th episode of this season. Number 13 of season 1 was on Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which also had a mention of Casper. Coincidence? Yes. 24:35 - Check out The Boss Baby: Family Business episode. 31:36 - Saying "OP" here again. 43:00 - Come to think of it, maybe any of the alternate endings of previous films can be canon because of time travel? Becka is directly connected to our last guest Chip Zdarsky and his friend, previous Speech Bubble guest Kagan McLeod, since she was the colour flatter on Kaptara.Becka explains what a colour flatter does on this podcast, but that's not her only gig. She hails from Kitchener-Waterloo where she shepherds the web comic turned graphic novel Gehenna. The first, of what she reveals on this episode is a planned series of Gehenna comics, is called Death Valley. Think Scooby Do and the mystery gang with actual horror and violence thrown in. (at least, that's how Becka describes it) Her fascination with, and love of, horror comes from being raised in a conservative household and not being able to watch anything that was deemed too scary or too violent and then going hog wild on that stuff in her adulthood. In her teens, she was heavily influenced by things like Lenore: The Cute Little Dead Girl by Roman Dirge and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez and those influences definitely seeped into her work, along with a splash of anime, manga and Hanna-Barbera cartoons.Along with talking about Gehenna: Death Valley, Becka gives us a sneak preview of her upcoming project co-written with Speech Bubble “almost” guest Bob Salley. It's called The Beholden and will be published by Source Point Press, an independent publisher out of Detroit, Michigan. He also has a rock show coming up at the Hazleton Art League on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. with TreadWater, Markus A.D., Ace & The Kings, It Never Fails, and Vanvancar. Before and during the interview, we drink Beer Boys crowlers of Minefire Blackberry Jalapeno Ale, 5 Whistle Wheat Ale, and Belsnickler Ale by Breaker Brewing Company in Wilkes-Barre, whose beers we always love (unless they’re brewed with peppers). We talk about how he started drawing comics; the funny story of how he was convinced to go to his first show that ended up getting him into local music; the real people and stories that inspire his comics and cartoons; keeping the Krust Toons storylines going while making them accessible to new viewers; teaching himself art and animation; voice acting and recruiting others for voices; creating funny characters and where their inspiration comes from; his animation process that’s similar to “South Park;” the influence of Adult Swim, Jhonen Vasquez, and Newgrounds on his work and finding his own voice and DIY style; dealing with trolls and turning them into Captain Dislike; adapting to feedback from fans; creating music videos for bands and the different collaborative process for each one; filming the new Condition Oakland video at the Schuylkill Mall before it was torn down and dealing with mall security; his folk punk music; quitting drinking; the current state of the Hazleton and Schuylkill County music scenes; the importance of the Hazleton Art League to the local scene and booking shows there; cops and house shows; his advice to those who want to get into animation; and more.
