Weaponised incompetence is a term that's gaining some traction at the moment. It's a passive-aggressive pattern of behaviour where someone in a relationship, whether it be professional or intimate, either deliberately performs a task poorly or pretends not to know how to do a task in order to avoid responsibility. Imagine the dynamic of person A is able to iron shirts/stack dishwashers/ do spreadsheets so much better than person B - which leads to Person A doing all the work, often reinforcing the unequal division of labour at home and in the office. In this episode of The Briefing, psychologist Jocelyn Brewer shares how it can manifest, and how to tell if you might be an unknowing victim.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Big tech poses a double issue regarding tech and kids and family concerns. No1. For Parents trying to learn practical skills about parenting and caring in the age of so much technology and now AI, we're often very quickly scared to death: The algorithms favour sensationalist, fear-based marketing: the worst of the worst facts get preference over moderate, nuanced skill-building messaging and we tend to then act out of fear when communicating with our kids around tech, instead of curiosity, building trust, teaching boundaries and validating their interests with their safety in mind. No2. For Kids, the algorithms can serve sensational, sexual or violent content that they're not ready for and don't know how to deal with in a healthy way, often sometimes feeling shame or breeding secrecy over what they've discovered or private conversations they've been invited to. We need to figure out how to be better flashlights for their spotlight minds, and Dr Jocelyn Brewer is back on the podcast to help us take a deep breath and get really good at it. We cover:Gaming/Gaming styles and connection and community green/red flagsTech usage and how we talk about it with our kids (pro tip: WITH, not AT for starters!)Our fears around risk can create a win/lose battle where no one wins. Social media - we're consuming a product, NOT the effort behind it. Kids don't realise. DMs/Messaging and navigating communication and kids knowing how to deal with tough things friends go through (SO good!) Escalation - communication, content, sensationalism in algorithms. AI and the way forward with the pervasive amount of synthetic content now being generated and shared. Share it far and wide - I haven't spoken to a single parent or teacher who hasn't got concerns over some of these topics, and we need more practical skill building, not more fear and denial. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “Digital Nutrition and why we need to think of technology more like food than drugs. I think we need to talk more about what the impact of too much (irrelevant, low quality) information is on our mental health and wellbeing!”____________If I'm honest with myself, there are definitely times when I feel that digital devices hinder my well-being vs helping it. I'm not an anxious person and yet, mindless scrolling or allowing those ‘inbound' messages or texts to take over, definitely has an impact on my well-being. I'm sure you can relate. But let's face it, I didn't get my first phone or tablet until I was ‘old'. It's a very different world now and navigating the digital landscape & impact of it on the young people in our lives is something more people & companies are focusing on. My guest today is Jocelyn Brewer who is a Sydney-based psychologist with a special interest in the psychology of technology and staying human in a digitally-saturated age.She created Digital Nutrition in 2013 as a positive framework for addressing digital wellbeing issues and our love-hate relationship with technology and in 2021 completed a Masters in Cyberpsychology at Sydney University. In addition to her private psychology practice where she works with adolescents and adults, Jocelyn is a speaker, educator and media commentator on issues relating to cyberpsychology, digital well-being and mental health. We are about to get schooled on digital nutrition people - strap in! _______In our chat Jocelyn mentioned two books she would recommend;-The Anxious Generation by Jonothan Haidt, andThe New Childhood by Jordon ShapiroFor more information about Jocelyn, check out these places;-Website: www.jocelynbrewer.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejocelynbrewer/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jocelynbrewer/Head to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com

Most of the time, we are unaware of the importance of maintaining our digital health and wellbeing. Simply because most of the time, we never really notice it as the prominent thing in our life. Jocelyn Brewer has, in her words, a job of the future. A psychologist and ex-teacher who helps individuals and organisations be well connected and mentally fit, she has been working with adolescents, families and adults for a decade, and understands the complexity of busy modern life, the increasing role of technology in our work and how healthy digital and screen habits need to be consciously shaped by us all. But rather than see exponential technology and social media as a dark force in our lives, Jocelyn debunks the notion of screen addiction and instead invites us all to do an audit on our relationship with our technology devices, so we can make better choices about our “digital nutrition” - that is what we choose to watch, like, who we follow and much time we’re actually spending online. In this chat, Jocelyn reveals some bite-sized morsels to help guide the use of technology for young people and adults. She has a wealth of resources available to download too and runs courses to support the younger generations who she calls digital orphans, rather than digital natives because their parents haven’t dined on the digital diets that are such an integral part of their lives. We started by asking Jocelyn how the worlds of teaching, psychology and technology came to collide in her own life. I think you'll love today's guest, Jocelyn Brewer. We're talking a bit of nutrition. No, no… not food. Digital nutrition. How we graze on the digital aspects of life and rather than deeming technogy toxic and needing to detox from it, Jocelyn prefers to talk about how we can utilise it in a healthy and nutritious manner. She's a good chick, so grab yourself a bag of kale and get comfy as we unpack the digital lunchbox! Technology is getting a bad rep. In fact, gaming is a super-food, productivity itself is 'toxic', and urban geography is more to blame than iPhones when we consider the challenges of society today. In this episode, we welcome Jocelyn Brewer, a Sydney-based registered psychologist with a special interest in the psychology of technology and staying human in a digital age. In 2013 she created Digital Nutrition as a positive framework for addressing digital wellbeing issues and our love-hate relationship with technology. In addition to her private psychology practice, Jocelyn is a sought-after speaker, educator and media commentator. In this episode we discuss: Why gaming is a super-food Why tech-is a convenient, but misplaced 'fall-guy' for the challenges of today Why critical thinking lies at the heart of our future relationships with tech To find out more from Jocelyn (jocelynbrewer.com/) To find a diverse set of positive games: (taminggaming.com) Host and Producer: Georgie Powell Music: Toccare

Today I'm speaking with Jocelyn Brewer, creator of the Digital Nutrition concept. We're talking about screen time and a new way parents can look at this challenging topic! Jocelyn helps us stay human in a digital world. In the episode you'll hear: A new concept for managing screen time - Digital Nutrition. Gaming and computer games – an opportunity to show a growth mindset and connect! Using technology (games) to build on our weaknesses. Communication and understanding. How to win a spot in Jocelyn's Engaging (Tech Obsessed) Adolescents course! Hit play and let's get started! Memorable Quote “Actually having a person sitting next to you with the controller and having that easy cool presence while engaging is like a digital super food.” – Jocelyn “You don't have to be a gamer and I guess this is what I encourage parents to really look beyond. We wouldn't say, oh, I'm not much of a booker. If you could just go over there and do your booking and like, just, don't ask me to want to know anything about what you're doing with your books. We wouldn't have that same kind of attitude. And so this is what I mean about curiosity.” – Jocelyn “What we noticed with young people, especially around relationships or thinking they know everything is that they're walking through this big dark, I usually call it a warehouse of their life, with a match. What they can see is only as far as that match gives them insight and they think, oh wow, I can see everything. Whereas the process of brain development and the experiences of life, start throwing on bigger and better light bulbs.” - Jocelyn Resources Enter Competition to win a spot in Jocelyn's Course, Engaging (Tech Obsessed) Adolescents here! Welcome to This Glorious Mess Big Kids. A twice-weekly look at parenting as it really is. Confusing, exhausting, inspiring, funny, and full of surprises. So many surprises. "My friends keep telling me how addictive gaming is for teens and that I should get them off the games now! .... Should I? And if I should, how the hell would I?" During the week, we received this listener dilemma and so for today's episode, we took it to an expert, Jocelyn Brewer, mother, teacher, writer, and psychologist with a specialisation in cyberpsychology. Jocelyn speaks to the balance between green time and screen time, when it's time to get off the games, and how to rationalise gaming in a world of worried gaming rhetoric. Enjoyed the new music for the show? It’s a song “Birds” from Independent Australian Artist Melanie Horsnell from her 2005 Album “The Adventures Of” available along with her other fine albums over at melaniehorsnell.com (digital download for instant access!) Have you heard of the many ways we should be consumed with guilt for wanting to interact with digital media - you need to digital detox. You need a digital diet. Just another thing to feel guilty about or feel bad about letting our children do as a parent. Well, it was definitely a topic I wanted to discuss on the show, but I wasn’t loving the deprivation / I’m a bad person vibes that so regularly form the discussions around tech and overuse or misuse. If teaching in the low tox space for 10 years has taught me anything, it’s that a positive mindset of “discovery not deprivation” works best for implementing changes, so we set out to find an expert who could help us navigate digital media. Enter Jocelyn Brewer, who is a Sydney-based registered psychologist with a special interest in the psychology of technology and staying human in a digital age. Alongside being part of the Cyberpsychology Research Group at Sydney University, Jocelyn is completing her Masters of Applied Science (Cyberpsychology) exploring the role of self-control and mindfulness in the prevention of Problematic Smartphone Use. This exploratory research surveyed over 500 Year 7 students in metropolitan Sydney and will be completed in 2019. The conversation we have is about the good and the bad, what to watch out for as a sign that addiction wheels are in motion, how to connect over tech instead of have it be something that distances you from your kids and how to raise them to have a healthy level of awareness and self awareness around their media use. It’s a conversation I’m proud to bring to the fore and I hope you love it as much as I did. Find the podcast show notes and this month’s sponsor offer over at www.lowtoxlife.com/podcast Alexx.

Jocelyn Brewer is a psychologist and expert in "digital nutrition". She's also a mum to a two and a bit year old, so she's navigating the same challenges most of us are: how much screen time is too much? Is all our mindless scrolling while breastfeeding doing damage? And is it okay to have a crush on Bandit, Bluey's dad? Our chat covers a lot: we start with Jocelyn's positive birth and postpartum (and the biggest reason she thinks the latter went as smoothly as it did). Then we dive deep into the guilt-inducing topic of kids and devices... and why perhaps the answer isn't banning screens or doing some kind of digital detox, but a more moderate approach that allows for scrolling (and that thing you have for Bandit).

In this episode of the Digital Mindfulness podcast I talk with the psychologist and TED speaker Jocelyn Brewer about Digital Nutrition. Digital Nutrition is her framework for ways in which people, and particularly parents, can ensure their children live healthier lives with digital technologies. Imagine if we were able to navigate our consumption of digital technologies with a clear understanding of which services had a positive effect on our bodies and our minds and those which were less so.
