Humidity Control Saves Comfort And Money

Send us Fan MailHumidity can make a normal summer day feel unbearable and it can quietly wear down your house at the same time. We're sweating through an Ohio heat wave and using it as a real-life lesson in comfort science: why the same temperature feels completely different depending on moisture, and why “just drop the thermostat” is often the most expensive way to solve the problem. We dig into humidity control for homeowners and home buyers, including why moisture is the enemy of buildings. Mold risk, musty smells, material breakdown, and even health issues often start with damp air that never really leaves. We also talk through a simple home inspection mindset shift: seeing a dehumidifier doesn't automatically mean there's a defect. In many homes, it's preventative maintenance and a sign someone is taking indoor air quality seriously. Then we get practical. We share our own setup and settings, why we aim around 45% relative humidity, and how running a dehumidifier can make 75°F feel genuinely comfortable while helping your HVAC system work less. We also explain dew point in plain language using a commercial inspection example where humid air hit cold metal and caused water to drip, a situation that looks like a leak but is often condensation. If you want a clearer plan for managing indoor humidity, choosing a dehumidifier (including why a pump model is worth it), and keeping your home comfortable during muggy weather, press play. Q&A System Oversizing - Short #291

HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2026 9:55

In this short Q&A podcast episode, Bryan answers a question from Evan, a licensed mold assessment consultant, about system oversizing: What can be done when an HVAC system is oversized to control humidity and keep occupants comfortable? The extent of the problem will depend on how badly the equipment is oversized, whether it has any turn-down or staging, and how the latent capacity is set up. To make the equipment work as best as it can, reducing the airflow to about 350 CFM per ton can help, as well as properly setting up dehumidification modes. The downside to slower airflow is a likely increase in cabinet and duct sweating. In brand-new houses, it may be possible to swap the condenser (though it may be unlikely with the recent refrigerant change) and then drop airflow at the air handler. You can use AHRI's data to look for a possible match and then check the manufacturer's expanded performance data to verify whether a new condenser is a match.  It's also possible to decouple the latent and sensible loads by installing a dehumidifier. However, completely decoupling the loads is not always practical, as a properly-sized HVAC system is the main source of dehumidification (and the dehumidifier fills in the gaps). Dehumidifiers need to be installed properly (with the supply ducted into the supply duct).  Intentionally derating the equipment's cooling capacity, such as via reheat, will turn it into a better dehumidifier, but you're still adding sensible BTUs and need to be aware of the consequences of that, including higher power bills. You can use electric reheat, remove insulation, or remove shades from windows. Using a smaller compressor until the system can be replaced and downsized would achieve a similar effect but comes with other negative consequences. Right-sizing equipment, load-matching, and managing air movement and heat transfer are ultimately the keys to preventing moisture problems.   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Cult thinking. Groupthink. Black and white thinking. “Loud, vocal thinkers' and how extreme sound bites dominate the modern media landscape thanks to algorithms, painting a ‘majority picture' when most people are not living out those extremes in day-to-day lives. It's quite a time to be alive, and also a time when it's very easy to let the fear of something cloud our ability to judge the reality of a situation fully. Is “Apatheism” a new way forward? I've always been fascinated by people we turn into our saviours and gurus, as well as charismatic authoritarians who sweep in and seduce us in our personal or collective vulnerable times.. That moment we start rationalising and making excuses for a cult leader, where perhaps a couple of years ago, we'd have been dead against that very thing/person we now defend. On Monday, I explore the murky waters of freedom, autonomy, cults and social systems with Professor of Political Science and Constitutional Law, Adam Scott Kunz, who specialises in cults and political philosophy and has worked alongside the famed Dr Janja Lalich, considered a global authority on cults, until her recent retirement. This show is NOT an attack on anyone, your beliefs, your religion, the diet you feel healthiest on or other held views, but a show to see how we can ensure we are “critical thinking” and not just believing we are, and how we can balance beliefs with values with freedom and come together on common overlaps that benefit us all and how we all struggle with freedom and belonging and ‘others'. One thing I know for sure after this conversation is that the best thing is to know we don't know anything for sure. So there you go! Many of us in the building industry turn to Nikki for all questions dehumidification (certainly including this weeks hosts, Jake & Pete). Nikki goes toe to toe with HVAC techs with a degree in communications and that is because she understands that you have to go tech if you are representing technical products such as dehumidifiers. She connects indoor air quality, occupant comfort, and moisture management. Cool discussion of adding the "D" to HVAC: HVACD or HVAC+D. And apologies to all those expecting (forbearing?) Q&A - Testing Dehumidifiers - Short #206

HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

In this short podcast episode of the Q&A series, Bryan answers a question about testing dehumidifiers (submitted by Steven via Speakpipe).  Dehumidifiers run air over a cold evaporator coil (to pull moisture out of the air and drain it out) and then reheat it over a condenser coil. The air leaving a dehumidifier is of a higher sensible temperature than the air going in, but there are fewer overall grains of moisture. To see how well a dehumidifier is working, you will need to know the dehumidifier's rating and have the manufacturer's charts at your disposal. You'll also need to be mindful of barometric pressure and know the basics of using a psychrometric chart or app. You'll want to monitor the dew point delta (the difference between the dew point of the air going in and the air going out) to determine how well a dehumidifier is doing its job. Entering air conditions will heavily impact a dehumidifier's performance, and power consumption is another important measure of dehumidifier efficiency. To collect data, you must place one psychrometer at the dehumidifier inlet and one at the outlet; you'll get the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures needed to make a comparative measurement and plot points on the psychrometric chart. You can also measure the condensate output and do the math to determine how much moisture is being removed per hour, but that would hinge on constant operation and consistent entering air conditions.   "Dehumidifier Facts and Troubleshooting" tech tip by Genry Garcia: https://hvacrschool.com/dehumidifier-facts-troubleshooting/  Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? This podcast is a big exploration of several important topics of our times (Das hates the word ‘conversation' and shares why in the show) People feel jaded seeing injustices inflicted on people, from corporate to political to personal, without a sense of real accountability for actions taken and how that's impacting everything from polarization to lack of success in environmental care and regeneration. The corporatisation of not-for-profits and climate change are feeding into many people's scepticism that the policies and solutions being tabled will get us results. Wild Animals and Das' book “Wild Quests” to help remind us what needs our attention and witness. Why “Donate $1 a day to save the Koala/Nature reserve/World” is not working. Living with our own contradictions - impossible to escape if we want to unite over what will make a difference. Das isn't here to give people comfortable ‘off ramps' and this was definitely a thought provoking hour exploring things we're all often thinking about, also often despairing over the state of, and yet never moving forward and we aim to light a fire or remind us to find our overlaps and common ways to move forward. Big tech poses a double issue regarding tech and kids and family concerns. No1. For Parents trying to learn practical skills about parenting and caring in the age of so much technology and now AI, we're often very quickly scared to death: The algorithms favour sensationalist, fear-based marketing: the worst of the worst facts get preference over moderate, nuanced skill-building messaging and we tend to then act out of fear when communicating with our kids around tech, instead of curiosity, building trust, teaching boundaries and validating their interests with their safety in mind. No2. For Kids, the algorithms can serve sensational, sexual or violent content that they're not ready for and don't know how to deal with in a healthy way, often sometimes feeling shame or breeding secrecy over what they've discovered or private conversations they've been invited to. We need to figure out how to be better flashlights for their spotlight minds, and Dr Jocelyn Brewer is back on the podcast to help us take a deep breath and get really good at it. We cover:Gaming/Gaming styles and connection and community green/red flagsTech usage and how we talk about it with our kids (pro tip: WITH, not AT for starters!)Our fears around risk can create a win/lose battle where no one wins. Social media - we're consuming a product, NOT the effort behind it. Kids don't realise. DMs/Messaging and navigating communication and kids knowing how to deal with tough things friends go through (SO good!) Escalation - communication, content, sensationalism in algorithms. AI and the way forward with the pervasive amount of synthetic content now being generated and shared. Share it far and wide - I haven't spoken to a single parent or teacher who hasn't got concerns over some of these topics, and we need more practical skill building, not more fear and denial. Nikki Krueger and Genry Garcia return to the podcast to talk about a recent IAQ & dehumidification case study on a vintage home in Miami. The home was very clean but had a musty odor and VOC concerns. You can read the case study in the “Literature” section at https://www.santa-fe-products.com/about-us/media-resources/ or https://hvacrschool.com/case-study.  Blower door tests and ZPD revealed that the home was leaky, and the crawlspace was also not properly encapsulated. The options were to tighten the building and/or mitigate the problem by improving the HVAC system. The homeowners chose to improve the HVAC, which Genry did by installing a ventilating dehumidifier (Santa Fe Ultra98H), reducing system tonnage (3.5 to 2 tons), and putting in new ductwork. One of Genry's key tips to address intermittent moisture issues is to pay attention to fluctuating pressures, not just under the blower door test conditions. Ongoing monitoring is crucial in these studies to measure the home under several different typical conditions. He also relies on blower door tests to determine if encapsulation is necessary or needs improvement, as insulation and encapsulation can bring new issues in their wake.  Extensive testing and working with other contractors (such as home insulators) are the best ways to get a solution that makes the homeowner happy. We need a holistic approach to design to achieve a homeowner's IAQ and comfort goals, not necessarily following strict design guidelines to a T. Nikki, Genry, and Bryan also discuss: Zonal pressure diagnostics (ZPD) Dehumidifier ductwork Dehumidifier selection Attic encapsulation, condensation, and duct leakage MAD AIR The importance of IAQ case studies and the insights we can get from them Effects of insulation Dehumidifier performance in part-load conditions Mechanical equipment design Consulting the ACCA design manuals Maintaining equipment and sustaining positive results   Stay tuned for the companion tech tip.
