Is capitalism to blame for the mental health crisis? Should we separate the art from the artist? Rebecca and Hattie have been reading non-fiction. And they are sharing two of the books with each other. Naomi Klein's Doppelganger won the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction in 2024 and has had a strong impact since it hit the bookshelves. What is the meaning of suffering? It isn't something we ask for, yet suffering afflicts every human being in some capacity, whether physically, emotionally, spiritually, or existentially (perhaps it's all the same). It's how we respond to what we can't control in life that defines our time on planet Earth. “You desire to know the art of living, my friend?” said Henri Frédéric Amiel, the 19th-century Swiss philosopher and poet. “Make use of suffering.” In this episode, Gregory and Vincent discuss the concept of the ‘lonely chapter' in one's life—the period of striving to make a change that goes against the grain, one you may have to make alone. A meaningful existence isn't gonna be full of endless creativity, sunshine and pats on the back, as meaning comes not only from doing what makes us happy. It's the challenges of life—the suffering—which can serve as the most profound opportunities for real transformation and finding one's purpose, something Vincent and Gregory have experienced themselves. “When most people think about the future, they dream up ways that they might live happier lives,” says Dr. James Davies, psychotherapist and author of books including The Importance of Suffering. “But notice this phenomenon: when people remember the crucial events that formed them, they don't usually talk about happiness. Most people shoot for happiness, but feel formed through suffering.” While we're fighting the good fight, sometimes we just gotta laugh at the absurdity of life. It's really all out of our control, anyway. Hopefully this podcast makes you think. But ultimately, we hope it puts a smile on your face and makes the trials of being a human being on this mystifying rock a bit more bearable. Why we should adapt exercise for pregnancy with James Davies For those who have been following me on social media it will come as no surprise that I am a huge advocate of exercise during pregnancy. The benefits are huge, and it is an area I am super passionate about. But of course, we want to ensure exercise in pregnancy is done safely to support our bodies. With this in mind you can be forgiven for ending up in a rabbit warren of frantic googling when it comes to exercise in pregnancy and finding a confusing tangle of poor quality, outdated, inaccurate information. Unhelpful to say the least but also super disempowering at a time when accurate information is imperative. I am really excited to put your questions to this weeks podcast guest and dispel some of the myths and misconceptions around exercising during pregnancy and explore the best way to navigate this precious time. I am joined by James Davies, this man has an extensive portfolio from a career in professional support himself, to working with elite athletes in the worlds of premier league football, the commonwealth, and Olympic games. More recently James has begun to focus on the historically neglected area of women in sport, qualified in pregnancy training and shares my relentless passion for empowering women to embrace healthy, active pregnancies safely. And on a personal note, James has been the voice and expertise behind my own pregnancy journey allowing me to enjoy physical activity throughout and genuinely have the positive, healthy pregnancy I dreamt of. PipemanRadio Interviews Nothing SacredOut now! Australia's Nothing Sacred unleash their new EP "Leviathan" via Rockshots Records to follow their first album in 30 years entitled "No Gods" released in 2021. "The 2021 album “No Gods” was well received so we were keen to get back into the studio and follow up as quickly as possible. The new release is another mix of new tracks and older tracks that builds on what we did with “No Gods”. We think it takes things a step forward - Sacred fans will find plenty to enjoy." adds the band.Fans of Nothing Sacred will notice on the band's forthcoming EP "Leviathan" that there has been a lineup change that now sees the return of Chris Stark taking the reins as lead vocalist, replacing James Davies. Stark had previously sung with the band for a number of years and has now returned in time to lay down the vocal tracks for their next monster. The EP "Leviathan" has plenty of riffs, killer solos, and big melodies from vocalist Chris Stark. The EP also includes the song “Sudden Death”, a thrashy unreleased track that was a mainstay during the band's live gigs in the mid-'80s plus re-recordings of a few tracks from the band's first album “Let Us Prey” and two new songs. All the new songs were written in group sessions with everyone jamming, throwing around riffs and arrangements into the mix. Overall, the EP is a blend of old and new, and something they could get done without a follow-up taking too long.Album order - https://bit.ly/LeviathanCDDigital - https://bfan.link/LeviathanMusic Video - "Leviathan" - https://youtu.be/zgLYldc8b60Music Video - "Drone" - https://youtu.be/PaJunwK4828Track Listing:1. During the 80s, the heavy metal band unleashed their EP “Deathwish”, which catapulted them as one of the most sought-after pit makers with the record's title track becoming a classic within the Australian metal scene. Three years later in 1988, Nothing Sacred unleashed the full-length entitled “Let Us Prey” on Cleopatra Records. Unfortunately a year after that LP's release, the band disbanded in 1989. Lead guitarist Mark Woolley, bassist Karl Lean, and drummer Sham went on to contribute to Hobbs' Angel of Death‘s early work in the late 1980s. Woolley also appeared on Hobbs' first self-titled album in 1988. Vocalist Mick Burnham later joined the short-lived Melbourne band Seizure in 1993.Although their tenure was short-lived, Nothing Sacred still remains an underground metal phenomenon in Australia. Songs from the Deathwish EP still get airplay on several Australian metal radio programs. In 2012, Nothing Sacred performed a series of 30th anniversary shows with Ross Percy (Ion Drive, Little House Godz) joining George Larin on guitar that included a support slot for the ex-Iron Maiden vocalist's Paul Di'AnnoP/Blaze Bayley Australian tour. Despite the success, the band agreed not to continue and returned to retirement. In 2015, the band decided to re-activate with a lineup of Sham, Karl Lean, George Larin, Ross Percy, and new vocalist Chris Stark. A slot on Melbourne's Brewtality Metal Festival received positive reviews before the band embarked on a short tour of Japan (That footage was released in 2021 as a part of a 3 disc boxset), which inspired them to continue and lead the band to headline day one of the Steel Assassins Festival in Sydney.Line-up changes again slowed the band, James Davies was recruited for vocals along with Stu Bedford on guitar. From there, the band spent most of 2019 and 2020 writing and recording, what was their first full-length in over 30 years. Entitled “No Gods”, the record witnessed Nothing Sacred‘s resurrection to the metal world. The album peaked on the Australian iTunes metal charts in October 2021 at #4 along with metal media outlets giving multiple praising reviews. Now ready to follow up "No Gods", Nothing Sacred has gone through another lineup change swapping singer James Davies out with the return of Chris Stark. We're BACK. We know you missed us. Join us for the launch of Booksplain - our new spin off, in which Jess Booksplains her latest non fiction read. Sedated by James Davies explores how neoliberalism has shaped our understanding and 'treatment' of mental distress. It's fascinating, shocking, thought-provoking...and yes, so bleak Em refused to read it.
My guest today has been on multiple journeys. Picking himself up after his athletics dream was crushed. Overcoming and managing a significant speech impediment. Finding joy, balance and his passion in helping others achieve a pain free life.James Davies, author of “Body”, is the founder and CEO of Rising Health, which he started 10 years ago and his clients include David Beckham, Kylie Minogue, Philip Schofield, Mo Farah among many others. He has worked globally with professional athletes ranging from Olympic champions, premiership footballers, NFL and rugby union players, as well as A-List actors like Eva Mendes. He is the sought after therapist and even served the Great Britain team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.But rather than being trained as a physiotherapist, like most practitioners are who work for national teams, James actually trained at the British School of Osteopathy. He studied Massage and Sports injuries at the London School of Massage, Tecar Therapy in Italy, Tok Sen in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and is a noted authority on laser therapy, dry needling, acupuncture and cupping. As a performance therapist and athletics coach, James is able to integrate a range of therapies including, massage, biomechanics and functional and structural applications. He developed the ethos of relieve, restore and perform based on his own personal experience as a young athlete, and his experience working with elite athletes. This is a really cool conversation for me to have, I loved chatting with James, I learnt a lot from his new book ‘Body', the language of pain, finding joy in movement and I loved how the majority of what we talked about came down to finding balance and creating a stress free life. Enjoy!

To be able to best advocate for yourself when seeing a mental health professional, it is essential that you have at least a base-level understanding of the different theoretical and philosophical approaches to understanding mental health, disorder, illness, distress, oppression, and abuse. The dominant framework in most Western countries is the medical model – this model pathologizes the human experience. It attempts to explain away suffering and trauma by labeling certain behaviors (and personalities) as “disordered” or by saying symptoms are caused by chemical imbalances in our brains. There is just one problem with the medical model of mental health: it is just a theory. It is not proven. Most mental health professionals are fully aware of this; they don't discuss it with patients. In this episode, we discuss the other theoretical frameworks of mental health that are emerging with new research – primarily the “trauma-informed” framework - and why many believe this is a more effective (and much less harmful) way of approaching mental health treatment. Together, we'll explore all of the currently existing models of mental health: ■ The medical model■ The social model■ The biopsychosocial model■ The trauma-informed model Through the discussion, analysis, and critiques of each of these models, you will come away better informed and more prepared to advocate for yourself when seeking mental health care. This may also illuminate and validate why some individuals have felt worse after seeing a mental health provider who is 100% bought into the medical model. I love this episode. James Davies is a world class recognised osteopath, performance coach and massage therapist and shares leadership lessons as we talk about his new book Body. His leadership lessons on resilience, service, and mindset that anything is possible is contagious. Our Victorian story arc is coming to a close, but not before we explore one of the most important topics of era: the lives of Black Victorians. The Victorians prided themselves on what they considered to be very socially progressive views. After the abolition of the slave trade at the end of the Georgian Era, an overwhelming number of Victorians joined the abolitionist movement to end the practice of enslaving humans around the world. Victorians read the autobiographies of formerly enslaved humans, attended abolitionist lectures, and the majority viewed slavery in the United States as vile and abhorrent. But Victorian actions and words often contradicted these efforts. As many Britons condemned American slavery, the British Empire was expanding and forcing its culture upon Black and Brown people worldwide. Minstrel shows perpetuated negative stereotypes of Black people in popular culture, and racist pseudo-science was employed to justify white supremacy. In this episode, we will ponder, discuss, and question: - the reality and impact of the Georgian era slave trade and how it influenced subsequent Victorian thoughts on the enslavement of humans - the problematic, racist contradictions in mainstream Victorian society - the idea or who writes history, and examine the lenses commonly used to study the past today - the importance of the application of critical thought when studying history - the necessity of intentionally seeking Black voices when examining the past - the legacy of racism in history texts todayVictorian London was awash in change, but the experiences of Black Victorians were unique and are all too often overlooked today. Join us we we seek to hear underrepresented voices tell the stories of extraordinary humans - humans who suffered and humans who thrived - and consider the many ways that their stories still deeply matter today. Pubs have witnessed a remarkable comeback post-lockdown with the public viewing the sector with a renewed sense of importance, although challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, according to Fleurets director and head of national agency James Davies. Fleurets currently leads the Radius On Demand Rankings for the UK's hotel and leisure sector, with almost 300,000 sq ft of space transacted this year. Davies believes pubs have enjoyed a honeymoon period in the post-lockdown period, with many new units opening up in what were traditional retail spaces. However, he also believes the sector needs help with VAT rates and with the ability to hire overseas workers if it is to overcome the recessionary storm clouds currently gathering.

Research showing that the chemical imbalance theory of mental health is a myth has just hit news cycles again, but this is not the first time this theory has been debunked. Many working in the field have known there is little evidence to support this theory, so why is it only recently the public has been informed? How did this myth originate and where do we go from here? In this episode you'll learn what current research is showing about the lack of evidence for links between depression and serotonin the history behind the chemical imbalance theory and how it became popularized why psychiatrists and people in the field have know the chemical imbalance theory is a myth for years and why the public wasn't informed what this means for antidepressants and psychotropic medication Links: Institute for the Development of Human Arts - http://www.idha-nyc.org/ Research The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic umbrella review of the evidence (Montcrieff et al). https://www.nature.com/articles/s41380-022-01661-0.pdf Time lag in medical science: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3241518/ Montcrieff's response to criticism: https://www.madinamerica.com/2022/07/response-criticism-serotonin-paper/ Rolling stones article about fueling right wing media: https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/ssri-right-wing-attack-joanna-moncrieff-1388067/ Moncrieff's Response to Rolling Stone article: https://joannamoncrieff.com/2022/08/03/first-they-ignore-you-then-they-ridicule-you-and-then-they-attack-you/ Healing by Thomas insel https://www.thomasinselmd.com/healing Antidepressant effect rates: https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/9/6/e024886 & https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7418603/ Serotonin and Depression: A Disconnect between the Advertisements and the Scientific Literature https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.0020392 Other research on chemical imbalance theory & public perception :https://diginole.lib.fsu.edu/islandora/object/fsu:267045/datastream/PDF/view , Books describing history of chemical imbalance theory and over-reliance on pharmaceuticals for mental health treatment The inflamed mind by Dr. Edward Bullmore - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39899586-the-inflamed-mind Cracked by James Davies - https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Cracked/James-Davies/9781639360253 Anatomy of an Epidemic by Robert Whitaker https://robertwhitakerbooks.com/anatomy-of-an-epidemic/

Hello dear listeners! To attend a Royal Premiere it takes one negative test, but to be absolutely certain it takes...two! We're back this week with a very special episode of the show. Jason Kim, the International Man of Mystery, reports from London, England! He shares his thoughts and describes the experience of gracing the No Time to Die Royal Premiere on September 28th. The trip and premiere were so exciting they inspire a plentiful array of topics such as: a special Shrublands Session, impressing Chris Corbould, mingling with the stars, the Sir Roger Moore soundstage, rain never souring special events, and above all else the importance of cherishing meetups with fellow Bond fans and enjoying the moment. So sit back, relax, and let Jason take you to the No Time to Die red carpet. A very special thanks to James Davies for inviting Jason to attend the event and Kerim Bey-ing him. We're talking with Bublr Bikes executive director, James Davies. As a lawyer by trade, James is a tireless advocate for Bublr Bikes and all things bike-sharing-related! Hey, we all know Wisconsinites love to drink from a bubbler. So, it makes perfect sense we should also love to ride on something called a Bublr Bike too! Bublr Bikes is Milwaukee's bike share program. Beyond the health benefits, experiencing a city on two wheels vs. by car allows you to … well, to better experience all the hidden gems that a city has to offer. And with 86 bike stations and over 600 bikes (and more coming folks), Bublr Bikes is the perfect way to get around the Brew City whether you're working or playing. On the show, James discusses: Who Benefits from Bike Sharing? Businesses, individuals, and our community How Bublr finds creative and effective ways to share their story and market the program And finally, how to get started and hope on one of these light blue two-wheelers! Whether you're down by Bradford Beach, hanging out on Milwaukee's Eastside or taking a lunch break downtown you can't miss seeing one of these bikes. Similar to the Sendiks red bag, the blue shade of Bublr's bikes has been putting its brand statement on our city! So, hop on, grab a pint (not while peddling of course) and have a listen to this awesome interview. And be sure to subscribe! This is a companion piece to the film - Jordan Peterson and the Hidden Epidemic: https://youtu.be/YbewqT6iBLs The Canadian psychologist and celebrity Jordan Peterson recently broke his near-year long silence and descibed his debilitating illness as the result of benzodiazepine dependence. Robert Whitaker is an investigative journalist, shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize, and the author of several books about the long term effects of psychiatric drugs including Anatomy of an Epidemic. The Canadian psychologist and celebrity Jordan Peterson recently broke his near-year long silence and descibed his debilitating illness as the result of benzodiazepine dependence. Peterson became ill simply as a result of following doctors' advice. What does that say about our society and culture, our media environment, and the state of psychiatric medicine. In this Rebel Wisdom investigation, David Fuller talks to one of the world's leading investigators of the long term effects of psychiatric drugs, Robert Whitaker, a Pulitzer Prize shortlisted author. He also links it to Eric Weinstein's concept of the DISC, or Distributed Idea Suppression Complex, to explore why the knowledge of the long term dangers of these drugs is not reflected in the media conversation. Why, without solid scientific justification, has the number of mental disorders risen from 106 in the 1960s, to around 370 today? Why has the definition of mental disorder expanded to include ever more domains of human experience? In the first part of this lecture, Dr James Davies will take us behind the scenes of how the psychiatrist's bible, the DSM, was actually written – did science drive the construction of new mental disorder categories like ADHD and major depression or were less scientific and more unexpected processes at play? His exclusive interviews with the creators of the DSM reveal the answer. The second part will address why psychiatry is such big business, and why, on the whole, it may be doing more harm than good. You'll get insider knowledge on how psychiatry has put riches and medical status above patients' well-being. The charge sheet is damning; negative drug trials routinely buried; antidepressants that work no better than placebos; research regularly manipulated to produce positive results; doctors, seduced by huge pharmaceutical rewards, creating more disorders and prescribing more pills; and ethical, scientific and treatment flaws unscrupulously concealed by mass-marketing. You'll learn the true human cost of an industry that, in the name of helping others, has actually been helping itself. Dr James Davies graduated from the University of Oxford in 2006 with a DPhil in Social and Medical Anthropology. He is a Reader in Social Anthropology and Mental Health at the University of Roehampton and a practicing psychotherapist. James has delivered lectures at universities such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Oslo, Brown, UCL and Columbia. He has written for The Times, The New Scientist, The Guardian and Salon, and is author of the bestselling book: Cracked: why psychiatry is doing more harm than good. James is the co-founder of the Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry, now secretariat to the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Prescribed Drug Dependence. Dr. Joel Vos is a psychologist and philosopher. He does research, teaches and offers psychological therapy to help individuals live a meaningful and satisfying life even in life’s most challenging moments. He leads the professional doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy and Counseling at the London New School of Psychotherapy and Counseling. The research group that he chairs at the Metanoia Institute in London focuses at developing psychological interventions to help people live a meaningful life, particularly in challenging life circumstances such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and socioeconomic disenfranchisement. Joel has conducted world-wide reviews of research on meaning, which he has summarized in his book ‘Meaning in Life: An Evidence-Based Handbook for Practitioners’. His reviews have, for instance, shown how people all over the world experience meaning, different types of meaning, cope with life’s limitations, and how they can be helped by professionals. His main conclusion, based on over 80 clinical trials, is that people can be effectively helped to live a meaningful and satisfying life, when practitioners systematically and explicitly address what they may experience as meaningful. Joel has over 80 scientific publications, and has given hundreds of lectures and workshops world-wide. During the British mental health awareness week in 2019 his book ‘Mental Health in Crisis’ -written together with Ron Roberts and James Davies- will be released, which describes that in our modern western countries we experience a large crisis where problems are often caused by socioeconomic circumstances which limit people from living a meaningful life, while the mental health care system seems to fail due to a focus on superficial interventions which do not address the complete and true problem for people. Joel’s next book, 'The Economics of Meaning in Life', will further explore how mental health problems are caused by the Capitalist Life Syndrome, which is the functionalist focus in our current economy on materialist, hedonist and self-oriented types of meanings. Joel is chair of the IMEC, International Meaning Conferences, in London, of which the next one will be held 12-14 July 2019, with an amazing line-up of speakers from all over the world, crossing disciplines such as psychology, psychotherapy, sociology, politics, economics, art and poetry. Joel is also director of Meaning Online, an online platform with resources on meaning and purpose. Joel is the organizer of the London charity, Punk4MentalHealth, which raises awareness for mental health via music, art, lectures and workshops for a broad audience. Since 2018 he has been working on developing online resources on meaning via his website www.meaningonline.org, you can purchase his books via www.amazon.com, and follow him on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/drjoelvos Listen as we talk about: The reason for all of the mental health issues in the world What the Capitalist Life Syndrome is How he defines the difference between 'having fun' and being fulfilled in life How his experience with tribes in the Amazon allows him to see just how disconnected the world really is The four reasons he gives that could help our world's mental state How we need to peel back the layers of our selves until we get to the real core of meaning How the best way to live a meaningful life is to not be in our heads That we fact that we already know how to live a meaningful life, and that meaning lies in our feelings The affect of traveling upstream instead of going with the flow How he recommends we stay in a flow state, instead of being thrown around in our work or relationships Sign up or hear more about our Path to Purpose course here Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... Today I'm thrilled to be joined by James Davis, CEO of uPad, the UK's largest online lettings agency. In this second episode, we have drummer extraordinaire James Davies talking about creativity and its all consuming nature. James aims to be a broad person but by his own admission, "lives and breathes music". He's someone who has battled the torture of constantly comparing himself to others and having a harsh inner critic narrate his everyday life and has somehow managed to be an incredibly high-functioning, self-aware productive person. Recently back from touring Europe and Africa with Black Jesus Experience, James talks about his growth as a person over the years and how he has managed to tame his demons and be such a productive member of society. Thanks for joining us for this second episode of GLUM CLUB! We'll be back again next Monday with another guest. In the meantime, remember that everyone struggles. It's not just you xx
