Eating disorders are mental health disorders. Period – full stop. (Triggering content warning)Johanna Kandel, today's esteemed guest and the founder and CEO of the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, has dedicated her career to unveiling that commonly misunderstood fact. Eating disorders are biologically-based brain illnesses. They are genetic in nature, and they are absolutely serious mental illnesses. As a passionate (and impressively credentialed) advocate for mental health and eating disorders legislation, Johanna has spent a lot of time meeting with numerous members of Congress, and was part of the first-ever Eating Disorder Roundtable at the White House. This is a deeply personal conversation wherein both Johanna and I share experiences from our own struggles with disordered eating and mental health; dig into our raw, honest, and unfiltered concerns about the growing trend of weight loss drugs; and deliver important tips for respectfully supporting those in your life struggling with body image issues. You don't want to miss this table stakes conversation on mental health as we shine a bright light on one of the most deeply shrouded health and wellness secrets hidden beneath American society. Please welcome back one of our most favorite people, Johanna Kandel! Johanna is the founder of The Alliance for Eating Disorders — the nation's leading nonprofit providing referrals, education, and support to individuals experiencing eating disorders and their loved ones. After recovering from a long battle with various EDs, she founded The Alliance, bringing her personal insight into the incredible work that she does. Last time Johanna graced TMV (“Thought 55. Johanna Kandel On Supporting Yourself When You Have An Eating Disorder”), the response was overwhelming! Y'all loved her wisdom, vulnerability, and tangible tools. So, this week, we brought her back for a community Q&A. We asked her many of your questions including early signs to tell you're relapsing, how to implement boundaries, navigating food guilt, body neutrality vs. body positivity, and more. From 29:15 - 35:23 we speak to questions related to strategies around eating + nourishing your body (re: food guilt, building healthy relationships with food while eating “well”, + tips to nourish yourself). Harriet Brown's memoir Brave Girl Eating: A Family's Struggle With Anorexia is a must-read for anyone looking to better understand eating disorders after last week's episode “RINSE, REPEAT and Eating Disorders.” The book serves as a fitting companion to Domenica Feraud's Off-Broadway play Rinse, Repeat. Though the drama portrays a family's struggle with this disease, the main perspective is Rachel's. In our panel last episode, Domenica and expert Johanna Kandel shared personal experiences as people who have struggled with an eating disorder; Dr. Mae Lynn Reyes-Rodriguez offered the point of view of a researcher and clinician who specializes in eating disorders. In Brave Girl Eating, the perspective is that of a mother trying to help her daughter survive this mental illness. Hear more about the book and what you'll glean from reading it. First she opens up about her own eating disorder, recovery, and journey to advocacy. She then describes how her closeness to the issue has fueled and challenged her advocacy efforts, how her professional and personal motivation has evolved over time, and how she focuses on opportunity instead of cynicism. Why is it so hard to treat eating disorders? We're going to find out today in this interview with Johanna Kandel, founder and director of the National Alliance for Eating Disorders.Kandel brings her own successful recovery from anorexia and bulimia to this interview whose message is that full recovery is possible. She's the author of book "Life Beyond Your Eating Disorder, but in her establishment of a thriving clinician-led service organization, she stresses that you can free yourself from identifying with the disorder - and then become it. Eating disorders can far too easily become who you are.Kandel seeks to empower readers by sharing her own past—how her youthful perfectionism and aspirations to become a ballerina fueled her need to control and numb her emotions, which stoked her disorder. She also offers practical advice: “My eating disorder gave me carte blanche not to have to do things that scared me: I didn't have to feel . . . Basically, it protected me . . . from life.”I loved this conversation. As someone with a history of anorexia myself, it gave me another chance to speak to my own vulnerability.Advertiser's Link and Special Offer:Have you been putting off getting help?
