Landbase is pioneering a new approach to go-to-market automation, using agentic AI to help businesses generate leads that convert. With $12.5 million in seed funding, Landbase is automating the mundane aspects of sales and marketing while leveraging machine intelligence to recommend high-converting campaign strategies. In this episode of Category Visionaries, I spoke with Daniel Saks, CEO and Co-Founder of Landbase, about his journey from building the unicorn AppDirect to his latest venture. Daniel shared his vision for creating software that works for you, not the other way around, and how AI-powered tools can help reclaim your day by turning months-long campaign processes into minutes. Topics Discussed: Landbase's mission to solve the challenge of generating leads that convert Using agentic AI to create go-to-market campaigns with high conversion potential The transition from months to minutes for launching marketing campaigns Daniel's journey building AppDirect into a unicorn and his decision to start Landbase The shifting landscape of B2B technology from on-prem to SaaS to AI Finding motivation beyond material success and focusing on mission-driven work Landbase's three core OKRs: faster, cheaper, better How AI can harness data to enhance human performance, not replace humans Building "GTM1 Omni," Landbase's domain-specific model for go-to-market insights The concept of "digital trust" and its importance in modern marketing efforts GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: AI should augment humans, not replace them: Daniel emphasizes that AI's role is to "automate the mundane so humans can do more human things." The most effective AI implementation preserves human agency while enhancing performance through machine intelligence. Focus on micro-ICPs for higher conversion: Landbase's data shows that targeting micro-ICPs (Ideal Customer Profiles) or niche audiences with specific problems can yield dramatically higher engagement rates—sometimes up to 90% email open rates compared to 1% for broader approaches. Opportunity in underdigitized industries: Traditional businesses like tool and die manufacturing, landscaping, or mining represent untapped markets for digital solutions. Being the first to create content for these niches can give you a significant advantage. Digital trust is the new currency: Building trust through your digital presence is critical. This includes having relevant case studies (video performs better than text), third-party ratings and reviews, credible authorities discussing your brand, and strong domain authority through proper backlinks. The Y Combinator playbook is outdated: Daniel argues that the traditional lean startup methodology of building a point solution around a defined customer market doesn't work in today's AI landscape. Creating a sustainable moat requires thinking differently and taking greater risks. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co

The federal government has reported a substantial increase in AI use cases, with over 1,700 applications identified across 37 agencies, more than doubling the previous year's total. These use cases span various categories, including health, mission-enabling tasks, and government services. The Department of Health and Human Services leads with 271 reported cases, showcasing the growing integration of AI in public services.Host Dave Sobel highlights new innovations from companies like Synchro, AppDirect, and MacPaw, which are driving advancements in IT management. Synchro has launched a platform tailored for internal IT departments, enhancing operational efficiency through automation and AI. AppDirect's acquisition of FirstBase aims to streamline IT asset management, while MacPaw introduces CleanMyMac Business to simplify Mac maintenance for small and medium-sized businesses. These developments reflect a trend towards co-managed IT solutions, addressing the unique needs of corporate environments. The episode also covers the launch of the Cyber Trust Mark, a government initiative designed to bolster consumer confidence in smart home devices by ensuring they meet rigorous cybersecurity standards. This mark, akin to the Energy Star label, will be mandatory for federal purchases by 2027 and is expected to influence how IT service providers recommend and support devices. Sobel emphasizes the potential challenges and opportunities this initiative presents for managed service providers (MSPs) as they adapt to new compliance requirements. Finally, Sobel discusses Microsoft's strategic shift away from relying solely on OpenAI models for its Microsoft 365 Copilot system. The company is exploring in-house AI models and third-party options to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. This transition underscores a broader trend where customers prioritize the quality of solutions over the specific AI models used. Sobel concludes by inviting listeners to engage with the show and participate in the ongoing conversation about the future of managed services. Daniel Saks, Co founder and CEO of Landbase, joins the show to talk about- Growing up in an entrepreneurial family in the business of furniture and the insight that led to founding Daniel's first business, AppDirect.- The importance of establishing "go-to-market credibility" before engaging in sales outreach. - Daniel's experience fundraising for AppDirect, and most recently Landbase's $12.5M seed round.- The importance of "founder-market" and "founder-product" fit.
This podcast interview focuses on the entrepreneurial journey to redefine software's role from engagement-driven to impact-driven solutions. My guest is Daniel Saks, CEO of Landbase. Daniel's entrepreneurial journey has deep roots in a 100-year-old family business. He grew up in Niagara Falls, Canada, where his family owned a furniture store founded by his great-great-grandparents in 1908. However, the 2009 recession forced the century-old family business to close, which became a pivotal moment in Daniel's life. Instead of lamenting the loss, he was inspired to explore how technology could have saved small businesses like his family's store. This experience led him to co-found AppDirect, a B2B subscription commerce platform that grew to generate over $3 billion in annual transaction revenue. In May 2023, he co-founded Landbase, which he leads as the CEO. He sees Landbase as his "second business" with a continued mission of "helping B2B businesses or entrepreneurs thrive." This time, the focus is on applying agentic AI to go-to-market strategies. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Daniel to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way companies still automate today. Daniel shares a compelling vision for the future of B2B SaaS powered by agentic AI - thereby creating a 5x lager market than today's software industry. He discusses how companies can achieve significantly better results while allowing executives to "reclaim their day." He also explains how this new technology can help build digital credibility, which is essential for companies to stand out. Here's one of his quotes I think that era of software, including business software, was all driven by what is the amount of hours that someone spends in your tool. And I think those are all the wrong metrics. My kind of goals with Landbase and agentic AI is the opposite. It's actually: how few, how little amount of time does a human have to spend in the software, but how much impact does the software make for the human so they can have more time to do what they love. During this interview, you will learn four things: What he's doing differently to create defensible differentiation. His approach to helping his customers avoid waste of resources and money as they speed up their Go-to-Market activities. Why he advises against imposing previous playbooks/values on new ventures. What he learned from speaking to customers about their biggest painpoints that helped him to build far better products. When the whole team has a common language and pulls in the same direction, that's where success comes from.Check out this episode to hear about how MEDDPICC helps teams work together and keep the focus on value. “I skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.” – Wayne GretzkyWhen Andrei Hagiu wrote a Harvard Business Review case study on AppDirect, he used this quote from Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to show the mindset each founder should have before starting their company. Andrei is an expert in platform strategy and started a career in academics as an Associate Professor at Harvard Business School, as well as at MIT Sloan. Andrei's research and teaching focus entirely on platform businesses (e.g., Airbnb, Amazon.com, Facebook, etc.) and their unique strategic challenges. Today, Andrei is an Associate Professor of Information Systems at Boston University's Questrom School of Business. In today's episode, Andrei talks about the difference between virality and network effect, how to create a successful, multi-sided platform business, and the future of Web3's decentralized platforms. Press play to hear Andrei's thoughts on…Making your platform user-friendly"You want to make it very easy for individual users to adopt it, right? That's the key because it matters to you to have a lot of users, and then it's easier from there to actually become a platform later on." The difference between virality and network effect"Virality just means...if you do a marketing campaign and your customers tell other customers about your product, it's of course a very useful tool. But that doesn't mean that your product all of a sudden has network effect. Network effect is basically my willingness to pay us higher for this particular platform or product if there are other customers on this platform."Creating a healthy relationship between buyers and sellers"Make it easier for you to transact with them, which in itself is an insurance against leakage, right? If all you're doing is making it easier for buyers and sellers to find each other, why would they come back to you once they found each other?"
It's National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and today we are talking to one of our favorite people, Johanna Kandel. Johanna is the founder of The Alliance for Eating Disorders — the nation's leading nonprofit providing referrals, education, and support to individuals experiencing eating disorders and their loved ones. After recovering from a long battle with various EDs (which we get into), she founded The Alliance, bringing so much of her personal insight into the incredible work that she does. This conversation was packed with vulnerability, wisdom, and resources. With Johanna, we discussed the genetic link to eating disorders and the power of understanding what is in our control, understanding when it's time for treatment vs things you can do on your own, the power of a diagnosis (and dangers in self diagnosis), thoughts on dieting (don't get her started on ozempic), and how to talk to someone you are concerned about. In this Masters of MEDDICC, hosted by Andy Whyte, Richard breaks down how both sales reps and sales leaders can break through emotional and mental barriers to become the best they can be. That can be anything from embracing a stoic approach to the sales rollercoaster to building a strong network to fall back on when times are tough.Richard has taken brave step after brave step, quite literal huge jumps (from Australia to the States!) to pursue that next challenge and embody the mindset of becoming the best he could be instead of embracing comfort. This podcast tells the story of this incredible sales career and explains his learnings along the way. In this episode, Renee Bergeron, Senior Vice President & General Manager AppSmart at AppDirect, discusses how the two-year pandemic accelerated channel transformation. AppSmart is a B2B technology ecosystem powered by the AppDirect platform. Renee speaks about four key elements from the pandemic that fast-tracked channel transformation as businesses needed to reinvent themselves in the digital sphere. Along with transformation into the digital sphere is the trend where businesses want to be provided with end-to-end solutions and this is resulting in a shift to ecosystems. The impact is on the channel partner who then needs to navigate these different marketplaces to bring together end-to-end solutions for their end customers. In order to do so, channel partners are embracing technology-agnostic multi-category marketplaces to bring together solutions from different categories. In this episode, Diana Soler shares key learnings from her efforts in creating the product ops function at AppDirect, where she is Senior Product Operations Manager. "Simply put, Product Operations enables the Product Manager to do their best work. This is accomplished by ensuring they have access to the right tools, access to the right data and that the processes they follow make sense and are optimized to help drive customer happiness."
In this episode of SaaS Connect by Cloud Software Association, Daniel Saks, Co-CEO and President of AppDirect uses his many years of experience to share with you how to build, monetize, and scale your ecosystem. A value-packed episode, here are some of the points about what's covered: How to enable ecosystems around content training enablement, so your customers can get value from those partners and start adopting. How to convince your company to strategically invest in building an ecosystem. The one core similarity between all of the AppDirect clients that are successful versus those who are not. The pitfalls and what makes it hard to build an ecosystem. Lessons learned. For example, those who focus on segmentation do best. Billing integrations. Tips for building a rich ecosystem include:Start small. AppDirect found that those that fail are those with a very ambitious business case, with no sense of value prop to the end user, and essentially they miss their metrics in the early days and don't have the momentum to keep investing in the project. Build the value proposition around your most successful integration partners and streamline. As Partner Manager, you will know which services work best with your product. Manically focus on adding value through that solution, and on being able to package and integrate it so it's seamless for your customer. Try to remove the complexity of having to internally and externally motivate so many players before getting started. This is where AppDirect can help because it eliminates a lot of development. Examples of high-quality value propositions when pitching companies to join your ecosystem and develop an app (in summary, figure out what the value point of that integration is, leverage data, show that you know the customer, and start small). The apps that do well are those within the functional flow through your app. So when customers are going through your app, and they need another app to complete what they're doing, those are the apps that will sell because the customer needs another piece of software to finish the work that they're trying to do. The most successful partners are ones that see the platform as a way to enable their ecosystem and they have the ability to think of creative ways to promote and drive traffic. In this episode of SaaS Connect by Cloud Software Association, Daniel Saks, President and Co-CEO at AppDirect, shares how the digital economy will look in the next ten years, and what that means in terms of the types of companies we partner with, and the partnership opportunities that we can take hold of. Using a commission digital economy report, Daniel analyzed the cloud maturity of different industries and businesses, and he presents that data in this show: The evolution of the digital economy and what it is; how the digital economy has taken over the traditional economy. For example, holiday accommodation may traditionally have been thought of as a hotel but is now an Airbnb, and how this evolution from traditional to digital provides an opportunity for partnering. Examples and case studies of digital transformation in traditional industries such as: a manufacturing plant and how ecosystems have been built around the device to speed manufacturing cycles; radiology and how apps can speed up traditional processes; banking and insurance that are slowly being transformed, and how banks want to open up their problems to ISVs that can create cash management tools, or visual insight tools for specific verticals and use cases. Traditional partnership models vs. digital partnership models. How to succeed in partnerships. Marketing subscription resells. Renee Bergeron joins Channelnomics' Changing Channels host Larry Walsh to discuss how innovative marketplace models are providing new avenues to market for technology vendors and partners. Marketplaces and online digital sales are increasing quickly. More than $6 trillion in B2B goods and reserves sales transact through marketplaces annually – nearly three times the volume of B2C activity. And a significant and increasing portion of that volume is technology products and services. Marketplace sales were on the ascent prior to the pandemic. Lockdown conditions made online buying a necessity for many businesses and provided vendors and resellers with a much-needed medium for selling under social distancing conditions. Marketplaces are on the minds of nearly every vendor. They see online selling as a means for increasing revenue, meeting customers where they want to transact (particularly younger buyers and influencers), and scaling limited resources. The concern is how marketplaces impact traditional channels and partners. Vendors want to tap the power of marketplaces, but they also want to control the negative side effects on the partners that got them where they are today. AppSmart, a division of AppDirect and leading online technology sales platform, provides an example of how a marketplace can provide vendors with the digital sales capabilities they seek while simultaneously enabling partners to transact online. Renee Bergeron, vice president and general manager of AppSmart, joins Changing Channels to share how AppSmart is plying this new online selling model to the benefit of vendors and partners alike. Daniel Saks, CEO of AppDirect, discusses their new commissioned report on the impact COVID-19 has had on digital transformation initiatives. eCommerce has, from the start, been a big disruptor in business. . Now, with the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve seen an even more dramatic shift away from physical commerce. Many great tech companies have emerged from a founder trying to solve a pain point in their own lives, and AppDirect is no different. As the only end-to-end platform that helps deliver digital services on any device and accelerate time to market, the company has raised $350 million and is not slowing down anytime soon. Dan Saks is the President and Co-CEO of AppDirect, and he is here to share various insights on working in the business. In this episode, Dan sheds light on how the closure of his family’s 100-year-old furniture business opened his eyes to the need to connect businesses with the right technology. When he was graduating from college, SaaS and cloud services were in their infancy, and Dan recognized their power to help businesses thrive and bridge unequal access to technology. We get an overview of how AppDirect connects distributors of services so businesses can consume the applications they need. We then zoom out from the product-level view to a look at AppDirect’s long-term vision. It is unusual for a company to have this type foresight, so Dan explains why looking at the overarching problem of how to deliver cloud services to business frames their goals and allows for a highly iterative development process. This long-term thinking is also inextricably tied to their values, and we learn about how the company established theirs and how the strong culture stems from them. Along with this, Dan also presents illuminating insights on thinking about partnerships, AppDirect's interview process, and its ideas around peak performance and a holistic approach to wellness. Intel's new Persistent Memory technology has three modes of operation. One as an extension of your current memory. Imagine extending your server with 9TBytes of Memory. The second is called AppDirect mode where you can use the Persistent Memory as a persistent segment of memory or as a high-speed SSD. The third mode is called mix mode. In this mode, a percentage of the persistent memory is used for AppDirect and the other to extend your standard DDR4 Memory. When exploring this new technology, I realized that I could take the persistent memory and use it as a high-speed SSD. If I did that could I increase the throughput of my ElasticSearch Server? So I set up a test suite to try this out.
Data driven venture capital is a controversial topic with strong opinions attached. The classic rebuttal of data driven VC is the idea that successful early stage startups look wildly different and so even if you do capture clean data, there is a fundamental skew (e.g. either you misplace predictive importance on certain variables or your data set is not large enough) so the outcomes would be falsely comforting. On the other side of the coin, however are venture firms that have not only positioned themselves as data oriented firms, but have broken through this narrative and realized outstanding returns as a function of this orientation. Enter Switch Ventures. A seed stage venture fund focused on identifying the most talented startup entrepreneurs through data science. Paul Arnold, founder of Switch, has longstanding experience applying data driven strategies with C-Suites, Boards and front line employees to drive change. He was a senior executive at AppDirect and helped build it into the unicorn it is today; prior to AppDirect, Paul was with McKinsey & Company in Silicon Valley. It was a pleasure to have Paul on the podcast. We talked about a number of topics in this episode. Some of my favorite, included: (1) the early days of Switch, (2) his data driven investment approach, (3) how his approach has evolved as he’s gained more experience as an investor and (4) where he believes the future hubs of innovation will be. Warren Levitan is co-founder and CEO of Smooch, the omnichannel conversation platform for enterprise software makers. He previously served as CEO of Radialpoint, which was acquired by AppDirect. Founded in 2015, Smooch connects any business software to all the world’s messaging channels for a more human customer experience. It was named New Startup of the Year at Techvibes’ sixth annual Canadian Startup Awards and a 2018 CIX Top 20 company by the Canadian Innovation Exchange. Episode overview: This week, Warren shares his vision and insights on what is happening in customer experience and how messaging is going to make all of our lives easier by connecting consumers to businesses in a more personal and convenient way. He will also be dropping sales and marketing tips, the story on how Smooch came about and the lessons that he learned throughout his journey as an innovator. Smooch is about building relationships between consumers and brands. Smooch is not a bot platform. Smooch is helping businesses build new channels of communication with customers through their own websites and mobile apps, plus the messaging apps consumers are already using to connect with friends and family. Businesses can handle these conversation via their existing customer experience software using live human agents or ring on automation with chatbots. Customer intimacy (getting to know your customer and being very personal with them) - building an emotional connection between consumers and brands. Warren and his team don't want the new digital channels to turn into a crap where you are stuck or when you are just typing to your agents or something but instead it is really about the connection between brands and where the consumers are and you can layer bot on top of that. “It's really hard for brands today to compete on their products.” As consumers interact with brands, we generally don't know everything we need to know to place an order or acquire something. Sometimes we do but most times we don't and brands have traditionally pushed us through forms and flows that make sure they get all the information from us. “As a consumer all you want is to engage with the lowest effort in the places we're already are and not jumping through hoops.” How the idea of Smooch come about: Warren shared a story about his last business delivering technical support for telcos around the world. Experiencing it firsthand, Warren realize that no matter how good they want to be in helping their customers and assisting them with their problems, by the time the call reach them, the customers are already angry. That is why he thought that this situation could be prevented. They would have solve this customer's problems so much easier if they were their first interaction. And that is where the idea for Smooch was born. Warren also shared about their venture and partnership with the biggest messaging platform, WhatsApp. What makes this a Canadian Innovation or Innovative thinking? Montreal-based Smooch is changing the way businesses create, nurture and grow one-to-one relationships with their customers. The Smooch Conversation Cloud allows brands to engage with users on all the world’s leading messaging apps and voice assistants, with support for both live agents and AI, revolutionizing and humanizing how people interact with businesses and technology. Smooch powers the conversational products and experiences of global leaders such as Zendesk, Oracle, Genesys, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, Betterment and Bird. Resources Recommendation: Restaurant: Dinette Triple Crown Book: Summary of Principles by Ray Dalio Company Mission: At Smooch, our mission is to humanize the relationships between businesses and their customers. With over 4 billion messaging accounts worldwide, people spend more time messaging than any other activity online. This shift, combined with the power of conversation at scale, creates an opportunity to make interaction with the brands we trust more useful, more immediate, more intimate, and ultimately more human. "The future is already here it is not just evenly distributed" As consumers grow to demand personal and human communication on a wide variety of channels, businesses are looking to their software vendors and partners to innovate and deliver these customer experiences. “Transformative change takes time” All great changes takes longer you might have imagined the best part of it is dance to be bigger and what you have imagined Sales and marketing tips : Make sure you're focused on your customers problem and not your solution Productivity tool: Messaging Slack Smooch WhatsApp Hot spot: Dinette Triple Crown in Montreal Jazz fest during summer Connect with Warren: Website: https://smooch.io/ Twitter: @SmoochLabs and @wlevitan Facebook: Smooch LinkedIn: Smooch.io Thanks again for tuning in!
