If only The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was still around to help us through another turbulent US Presidential election. Pat Paulsen -- where are you when we need you?A key writer/producer back on that 1967-69 comedy variety show was a Canadian -- Allan Byle. Before the Smothers, he worked for Fred Rogers as well as CBC songbird Juliette. Tommy Smothers, who has a knack for spotting talent, insisted that Blye, then in his twenties, be part of the Comedy Hour writing staff. The series became a mid-season, Sunday night hit. While tame by today's standards, controversial jokes, edgy guest stars and political pressure led to CBS firing the Smothers early in 1969.Blye carried on as a writer/producer. He went on to bring out the best in David Steinberg, Sonny & Cher, Dick Van Dyke, John Byner and Super Dave himself, Bob Einstein. The Winnipeg-born Emmy winner passed away in October at 87. On this episode of brioux.tv: the podcast, I welcome his younger brother Garry who also worked on many of those landmark shows.Garry's showbusiness credits are worthy of their own salute. He started as a talent agent, representing a couple of pretty good clients -- Elvis Presley and Col. Tom Parker. Garry's stories range from that 1968 Elvis Comeback Special to later on working with the likes of Redd Foxx, Cher, John Candy and more. Join us for an hour-plus of amazing showbiz memories that will fly Blye.

View the pilot and follow along at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAyeKcKC4Xs Then, in 1998, the variety show as we know it had been a dead format for close to 20 years.  However, what if you could revive one of the greatest variety shows ever with a host who had been deceased for nearly a quarter century?  That was attempted by UPN with a virtual Ed Sullivan, voiced by John Byner.  The result was this one-off pilot which was reminiscent of a more recent format, and with star power packing arenas to this day. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Brad James, son of legendary television personality Dennis James. We talk to Brad about his dad's career that began in New Jersey radio in the 1940s (where he became friends with a young Frank Sinatra) and moved to television in New York shortly after. A man of firsts, Dennis James (aka The Dean of Game Show Hosts) was the first person to: appear in a television commercial, host a wrestling event on television, emcee a variety show, appear on video tape, appear in an infomercial and on and on and on. The man started in television when there were likely only 300 in the entire New York area. He went on to have a 6 decade career as a host of the United Cerebral Palsy telethon which raised a billion dollars over the years, hosted a variety of game shows like Name That Tune and The New Price Is Right as well as play himself in films like Rocky IIIand The One and Only. Somehow we get through all of this and find time to discuss meeting Elvis Presley, believing comedian Foster Brooks was Santa Claus, parking cars at The Playboy Mansion, befriending local LA legend Mad Man Muntz over a thoroughly inappropriate videotape and much more. If you love game shows, stories about the birth of television, watching Jeopardy with Bob Hope and golfing with Kevin Costner, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

In which the Mister and the Monsters join me in reviewing THE BLACK CAULDRON (1985), currently streaming on Disney+. Loosely based on the CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN series of books by Lloyd Alexander, the film tells the story of the evil Horned King's quest for a mystical cauldron that will enable him to raise an army of the dead and conquer the world. Only a young boy named Taran (voiced by Grant Bardsley), a princess (Eilonwy/Susan Sheridan), a bard (Fflewddur Fflam/Nigel Hawthorne) and a creature named Gurgi (voiced by John Byner) stand in his way. Will the Horned King (John Hurt) reach his diabolical goal? Co-directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich from a script credited to Ted Berman, Vance Gerry, Joe Hale, David Jonas, Roy Morita, Richard Rich, Art Stevens and Al Wilson; it was the first Disney film to receive a PG rating, feature computer-generated imagery and was only release in home video format in 1998 in part because of its commercial failure. Chicken soup for the COVID soul. Seventy minutes in heaven with impressionist, comedian, actor, icon, John Byner. A hero of mine for as long as I can remember, he exceeded all my hopes, as a talent and a human. What a lovely, lovely man. I suspect his fabulous attitude had much to do with his wonderful career and the spectacular life he lives. He appreciates and cherishes it all. John's a power of example. We talked his early days at The Vanguard in the Village, getting his first TV break on a Merv Griffith talent show and then, Ed Sullivan, for John, a life changer. He treated us to his iconic Sullivan impression with Topo Gigio, including my favorite, "Kiss me goodnight, Eddie." Swoon. Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra, Georgie Jessel, Walter Brennan, John Wayne, Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme... a comic feast. John talked about Get Smart, The Carol Burnett Show, Hollywood Squares, Soap, hosting Something Else, The John Byner Comedy Hour, Bizarre, Super Dave writing his memoir, Five Minutes, Mr. Byner! https://amzn.to/2PMQdO2 which just dropped. Filled with great showbiz and real life stories, it's a wonderfully entertaining, well-written read by a master storyteller. With it's mix of vulgar humor, topless ladies and Bob Einstein's Super Dave character, Bizarre was an early hit for Showtime, landing six seasons and even a spin-off show. It's a fascinating document of early cable TV sketch comedy. But...we're not watching that today. No, we've decided to go back to see what the show looked like when it was being potentially produced for ABC, with host Richard Dawson in place of John Byner. Mistakes might have been made.

Actor, Jayne Eastwood joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today!! What a blast I had with Jayne! She made me guffaw a few times during our conversation. Don’t be fooled! There are so many gems of wisdom hidden amongst the laughter and funny stories, Jayne has had a diversified career as an actor with much success and she is opening up about the ups and downs of it all and how she remains grounded through it all.   In this episode: How painting has served as another creative outlet and forces her to be present and in the moment What mantra she used to help her quit smoking after 50 years and the effect it has had on her vocal range How to accept rejection as a part of the game and why it is important to feel the feelings around being rejected. How “showing up” is the key to moving forward in your career as an artist. A little about Jayne: Jayne Eastwood, actor (born in Toronto). Jayne Eastwood was raised in Toronto, where she attended Northern Secondary School. It was in Toronto that she became a member of the cast of the musical Godspell, which played at the ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE. The show ran from 1972-73 and Eastwood worked with cast members Martin SHORT, Andrea MARTIN, Gilda RADNER, and Eugene LEVY, and joined several of them in founding the Second City Theatre Troupe. Eastwood often appeared on Second City's creative offspring, SCTV, most memorably in the famous parody of GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD (her recurring line of dialogue is "I'm bummed out") with John CANDY and Joe FLAHERTY. Though Eastwood moves effortlessly from comedy to drama, comedy remains her magnetic north, drawing her to work with Women Fully Clothed, a group of performers nominated in 2005 for a CANADIAN COMEDY AWARD for best sketch troupe. From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s Eastwood appeared in stage productions of works by Michel TREMBLAY, Tom Stoppard, and Neil Simon, by such companies as Theatre in the Dell, Toronto Arts Productions, Centrestage Company, and Toronto Truck Theatre. She maintained a presence in both movies and television, working steadily in a variety of roles that began, in the 1980s, to include considerable voice work. One of her first television appearances was on the series That's Show Biz with Lorne MICHAELS and Hart and Earl Pomerantz, and she went on to become a regular on John Byner's show Bizarre from 1980 to 1985. In film, she played the president's wife in Al WAXMAN's sex comedy My Pleasure Is My Business (1975), appeared in the Robin SPRY film One Man (1977), had a small part in David CRONENBERG's Videodrome (1983) and did voice work for The Care Bears Movie (1985). She could be heard as the voice of Mrs Dingle and of Cookie and Joyce in the animated shows For Better or For Worse, and Bob and Margaret. In 1998 she won a GEMINI AWARD for best supporting actress in a drama for Dangerous Offender: the Marlene Moore Story. She played Aunt Agatha on the series Noddy and Friends, winning a 1999 Gemini Award for her work. Eastwood's film and TV appearances continued through the 1990s and into the new millennium, in works as varied as Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), Chicago (2002) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). Eastwood has had parts in everything from stage productions of Marat/Sade to TV shows such as King of Kensington, Anne of Green Gables, and Riverdale, and in radio plays like CBC's Steve the Second. She is best known for her role as Betty, the pregnant wife abandoned by Joey in the canonical English-Canadian film Goin' down the Road (1970). Many viewers will recall her as the character Ronnie Sacks in the Canadian television series This Is Wonderland or as one of the regular characters in the partly improvised Train 48. She appears as Maxine Bingley in the series Billable Hours and plays a teacher in the movie Hairspray (2007), which was shot in Toronto. She has a recurring character part in the popular series Little Mosque n the Prarie, and reprised her Goin' down the Road role in the sequel, Down the Road Again (2011). In 2014 she was a guest star on Working the Engles alongside her old friend Andrea Martin.  She can be seen in the hit series Haven (2013-2014) as the recurring lead role of Gloria.  More recently Jayne worked with director Kenny ORTEGA on The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Orphan Black with Tatiana MASLANY. In 1999 Jayne Eastwood received the EARLE GREY AWARD for lifetime achievement and the recipient of the 2011 DAVE BROADFOOT AWARD at the CANADIAN COMEDY AWARDS. Eastwood is a talented and reliable actor who decided early on to remain in Toronto rather than leave for the limelight of the US. Her career is curiously and satisfyingly Canadian in that she has crafted a successful working life as an ensemble player in a variety of media while remaining in her own home town.
