Along the way, Breht takes many detours, and touches on the self-immolation and martyrdom of Aaron Bushnell, the ongoing multi-faceted evolution of the human species, and much more. Regular listeners will be glad to hear that this week's episode doesn't contain any of Tony's melodic efforts-after we received numerous contacts and complaints after his opening to last week's show! This week we discuss the drama on the field, and utter nonsense off it, from the weekend's Premier League football matches, and then look back on a fantastic start to an 11-day feast of sport with the European Championships, and the 10 different sports involved. We also review the closing stages of Rugby's Super League season, with Saint Helens having secured a semi final play off place with 4 games to go, and Wakefield boosting their hopes of avoiding relegation with a vital win over Wigan. Our first guest is Swinda Falkena. When Swinda is not studying atmospheric circulation regimes as part of her PhD research she can be found playing football for Wokingham Ladies FC and competing in marathon and ultramarathon running races. Swinda chats with us about completing the South Downs 100km race this summer, as well as getting around the country to watch a number of the women's European Championship football matches. Friend of the show and regular guest John Peacock returns – but rather than wearing his pilates instructor hat, John joins us to talk about his beloved Brentford, as we make Tony relive Manchester United's 4-0 hammering at the hands of “The Bees”!

Welcome to Dharma PhD! In this episode we talk about John Peacocks' talk, "Buddhism Before the Theravada, Part 6". We talk about paṭiccasamuppāda (Dependent Origination) as a Buddhist model of cognition and about how having a framework such as this one to understand our experience can help us deal with craving and grasping loops. A few things referred to: Dr. Judson Brewer (https://drjud.com/). The Independent PhD project (https://dharmaphd.com/2020/07/10/the-independent-phd-and-why-you-should-start-one/). I recently posted on the blog about overlapping models of perception/cognition, one more cognitive-science-y compared with dependent origination: https://dharmaphd.com/2021/11/01/modeling-cognition/. Hedonic Tone, also called "feeling tone" is my preferred translation of the Pāli word "vedanā". I talked about it over on my other podcast in a few episodes: https://www.buddha-bites-podcast.com/episode/buddha-bites-ep23 A transcript of and link to John Peacock's talk is available here: https://dharmaphd.com/2021/11/13/john-peacock-buddhism-before-the-theravada-part-6-2011-09-04/ And a transcript of this podcast episode is available here: https://dharmaphd.com/2021/11/13/dharma-phd-the-podcast-episode-7/ Want to get in touch? Welcome to Dharma PhD! In this episode we talk about Paṭiccasamuppāda, Dependent Origination, using John Peacocks', "Buddhism Before the Theravada, Part 5" as a jumping off point. We talk about how Paṭiccasamuppāda, Dependent Origination, has myriad implications. And then we focus on just one implication, causing skillful behaviors and mental/emotinal states to arise by putting the conditions in place that encourage those behaviors/mental states to arise more spontaneously. Particularly we talk about environmental factors. A few things referred to: Bodhi College, an organization that teaches Secular Buddhism: bodhi-college.org. Stephen Batchelor's book After Buddhism. Leigh Brasington, a Jhāna teacher: leighb.com. The talk we're referring to: "Buddhism Before the Theravada, Part 5" (https://www.audiodharma.org/talks/2598). Bhikkhu Bodhi's book Reading the Buddha's Discourses in Pāli. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: https://bigthink.com/robby-berman/the-missing-apex-of-maslows-hierarchy-could-save-us-all. The 2,500 word blog post I referred to on a framework for thinking about the different implications of Paṭiccasamuppāda: https://dharmaphd.com/2021/09/27/parsing-pa%e1%b9%adiccasamuppada/. and finally, Alain de Botton's book: Religion for Atheists. *** A transcript of and link to John Peacock's talk is available here: https://dharmaphd.com/2021/09/28/john-peacock-buddhism-before-the-theravada-part-5-2011-09-04/ And a transcript of this podcast episode is available here: Want to get in touch? In the men's team's first major final in 55 years, England were defeated in a penalty shootout at the hands of Italy. Today's Nick Robinson spoke to John Peacock, who watched the game at Wembley with his son and also attended the World Cup Final in 1966 with his father. Following that, Today's Martha Kearney found out more about England's Harry Kane, from Tottenham academy coach Bradley Allen, and Raheem Sterling, from Steve Gallen who coached him at QPR. One of the defining photographs from the night was that of manager Gareth Southgate comforting Bukayo Saka, the player who missed the final penalty. Southgate himself missed the crucial spot kick in England's Euros semi-final defeat in 1996. Nick Robinson spoke to Alan Smith, the man Southgate turned to when he missed that night and who also watched the final against Italy with the Southgate family, and Sir Trevor Brooking. Finally, Martha Kearney asked Commercial Director of the FA, Mark Bullingham about the progress the England team have made under Southgate's management. John Peacock is a Senior Vice President at ASRC Federal. In this episode, John shares how building up great relationships ultimately paves the way to your success rate in a government setting as in any other. It's also a matter of triangulating these three essentials of pricing, price to win, and competitive intelligence, and all other data points to reach your pricing point. Why you have to check out today's podcast: Learn how to do competitive intelligence and price to win Find out how to show value in a government setting and have a good win rate Learn how to shape opportunity so that government RFPs comes out more in your favor “You've got to have really good relationships across all the different functional and organizational teams within your company. At the end of the day, my ability to get to the right price and help the company get to the right price is all driven off of the teams of people that you work with to get there.” – John Peacock Topics Covered: 01:16 – How one thing led to another and finally into pricing 02:23 – What got him to stick with pricing all these years 04:06 – Working through the pricing ranks 04:57 – What is ASRC, what does it do, is it government-focused primarily 07:09 – Pricing for value in a government setting 09:01 – A multi-step process in government bidding 10:38 – Talking about sole source contract award 12:03 – What's a good win rate 16:58 – Taking a look at win rates early and late in the process 19:06 – Increasing win rate at the time the RFP comes out 21:46 – Factoring in competitive intelligence in the price to win 23:56 – The key to do competitive intelligence and price to win 28:21 – Margin requirements for bidding 30:31 – John's best pricing advice to help create a great impact on one's business Key Takeaways: “A big piece of government pricing is compliance; it's responding specifically to what they ask for.” – John Peacock “It's much harder to win something where you're not ahead of the curve in government pricing. It's not as if there's a commercial price list that you just go grab a number off of; we're not buying a Dell laptop that you can just get anyone can go and get the same price for. It's much more specific than that. And so, you've got to be ahead of the curve if you want to have a good win rate.” – John Peacock “Just like everything in life, everything comes down to relationships, and whether it's your BD people, your program people, the people that are truly successful are the ones that make good relationships; they bridge that gap. And that allows you to have those conversations, and explain why there's value add. If you have the greatest product in the world, but no one will talk to you. It's not going to ever go anywhere.” – John Peacock “The level of information and expertise comes into play. Putting the numbers together, honestly, isn't the hard part. It's pulling all the pieces together, so you know what the numbers should be?” – John Peacock “The key to how we do competitive intelligence and price to win is, I see federal really falls within the expertise of the team that does this, and how they're able to present the data.” – John Peacock “I always tell my team, how you present information, how it looks even, is critically important. You might have the best answer in the world. And if you do it in cram, on a PC, your kids drawing paper, you're not going to win the award; it's got to look good, smell good, taste good. It's got to be 100%.” – John Peacock People/Resources Mentioned: Tech Systems: https://www.techsystemsinc.com/ Dell: http://www1.ap.dell.com Connect with John Peacock: Email: jpeacock@asrcfederal.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-d-peacock Connect with Mark Stiving: Email: mark@impactpricing.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/

Welcome to Dharma PhD! In this episode we talk about John Peacocks' talk, "Buddhism Before the Theravada, Part 4". In this talk and guided practice, Sarah Jane describes the benefit of thinking of Buddhism’s Four Noble Truths as Four Ennobling Tasks. As tasks, the teachings become invitations to action. In the case of the first, the invitation is to comprehend dukkha (suffering). How? We practice. Why? Clear comprehension gives rise to liberating insight. But more than orienting our minds toward helpful concepts that support practice, this episode is meant as a gift during a holiday season in which people may feel tender and weary from struggling through the public health, social, political, and environmental crises that accelerated in 2020. There is much suffering happening. It is our hope we may manage, together, to hold the inarguable suffering--the aging, sickness, and death that are inevitable--and diminish the secondary suffering present in our bodies, hearts, and minds. The goal is not to avoid emotional difficulty. It’s not to acknowledge it and leave it at that, either. Instead, we are meant to use it for the sake of inner freedom, or at least more ease. May there be more ease within us and between us as we make our way into 2021.In her talk, Sarah Jane draws from teachings from Stephen Batchelor, Christina Feldman, John Peacock, and Akincino Weber. In the meditation, she quotes Stephen Schettini:"We’re all faced with the same fundamental choice of calming the mind or letting it go its own scattered way. Leaving it to the caprice of unplumbed emotions leads to a life that’s mysterious in all the wrong ways."The meditation starts at 8:40. If your podcast app supports chapter markings, you can jump straight there - useful for repeated listens.~~ Skillful Means Podcast offers these guided practices to help you deepen into your yoga and mindfulness journey.Follow us on Facebook and Instagram, or send us a note at feedback@skillfulmeanspodcast.comwith your comments. You can also get in touch with Sarah Jane directly where she offers weekly classes, monthly workshops, meditation groups, and mentoring.

It's amazing, both as text and audiobook: https://gate.sc?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsmile.amazon.com%2FSurfaces-Essences-Analogy-Fuel-Thinking%2Fdp%2F0465018475%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3Fdchild%3D1%26keywords%3Dsurfaces%2Band%2Bessences%26qid%3D1598008467%26sr%3D8-1%26tag%3Dduckduckgo-ffab-b-20&token=302c09-1-1598300816779 (smile.amazon.com/Surfaces-Essence…duckgo-ffab-b-20) And, finally, a moment of errata: Theravadan monks have 227 rules and nuns have 311. I do not believe that the words "monk" and "nun" are the best translations for the words "bhikkhu" and "bhikkhuni", but that won't surprise anyone who listens to this talk. May you be well!

John Peacock is a scholar and Associate Director of The Oxford Mindfulness Centre. His studies of the earliest Buddhist writings have revealed to him a very human Buddha and a very different Buddhism than we know today. In a conversation with Hokai Sobol, Peacock describes the historical Buddha as a very practical teacher and a radical social reformer. He cites passages of the earliest writings that describe a very human and emotional Buddha that enjoyed satire. He calls the Buddha the “First Psychologist” and relates to him as a teacher who was more interested in practical psychology than philosophy. This is Part 1 of a 2 part series. Hokai Sobol and John Peacock continue their discussion about how the Buddha and Buddhism are described in the earliest Buddhist writings. By getting more accurate with translations of the earliest writings, Peacock believes modern Buddhism can free itself of the trappings of Religion, Humanism, and the need for consolation in the face of reality. They discuss the role and importance of critical inquiry in Buddhism’s future, and how all of this is leading to a secularization of Buddhism. This is part 2 of a 2 part series. Van Dyck's portraits of nobility appear to represent their sitters as superior beings, 'naturally' entitled to the pre-eminence which they enjoyed. This entitlement, through lineage or genetic inheritance, was vigorously questioned during the 16th century
