The Blasters & Blades Podcast Wowzer, we spent 40 minutes on the nostalgia train, but we eventually talked about the intersection of horror and science fiction. It was a fun conversation that will surely spawn more chats on this topic. Our chat ranged from Mary Shelley and Jules Vern to the Deep Space franchise and everything in between. We had Jesse James Fain, MD Boncher and Nathan Pedde on to talk nerdy with us. This was a fun interview, so check out this episode. Lend us your eyes and ears, you won't be sorry!! Sharon was a teenager heading for trouble when she discovered sailing. Starting in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, Sharon watched Maiden race around the world with an incredible international team of women. They inspired her with the determination and belief that if they could do it, then maybe with a lot of hard work and determination, so could she. Every opportunity to sail was taken. Sharon discovered her passion, the need for camaraderie, the endless adventure seeking and new challenges to overcome. She wanted to race around the world, but the opportunity to compete in the Europe Class at the Olympic Games came first as the age of 22. At the 1996 Atlanta games, she finished 5th and competed again in Athens in 2004, placing 7th in the Yngling yacht. She has raced around the world 3 times, logging more than 107,000 offshore miles. The first was as part of Tracy Edwards' first all-female crew, to attempt the Jules Verne non-stop round the world record. She then joined the crew of Amer Sports Too, in the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001/02. Sharon has won sailing titles in multiple classes and holds 5 world speed records. A country girl at heart, she has been an inspiration to many, a great leader and passionate coach. Join Sharon's race crew in 2024 & 2025: https://oceansailingexpeditions.com/racewithsharon
Inspired by the 1873 Jules Vern fiction novel, Around the World in 80 Days, Bly decided to make a quick trip around the world herself – with the goal of besting that 80 day benchmark. In 1889 Bly set out from Hoboken, New Jersey. She traveled light. Her only luggage was a small bag – and no change of clothing. Throughout the journey she used the transportation modes of the day as they were available; including trains, ships, horses, the rickshaw, sampan, and even a burro. Finally, she arrived where she began, In Hoboken – and set a world record. Snatching the glory from the fictional Phileas Fogg - who had held for 16 years the ‘fictional' record of 80 days. Nellie Bly completed the trip in 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes, and 14 seconds. Also See:https://www.biography.com/authors-writers/nellie-blyhttps://wams.nyhistory.org/modernizing-america/modern-womanhood/nellie-bly/https://guides.loc.gov/chronicling-america-nellie-bly We've Got A New YouTube Channel - Watch, listen and most definitely subscribe and share!
let's go deep dive on the new loop and why it is the way it is, and what improvements need to be made. is this as bad as some people think it is?
A Race Around the World: Based on the True Adventures of Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland
November 22nd-November 25th: While Elizabeth Bisland leaves America, Nellie Bly makes contact with her first country. She arrives in England and is informed by reporters, who escort her, that Jules Vern, the author of the fictional A Race Around the World would like to meet her. Is going to a small town in France worth the detour to meet this famous author? Will she make it down in time to southern Italy to catch her steamboat to Egypt?
Art and technology share a symbiotic grace in the glass spacecraft, rockets, and scientific apparatus of Rik Allen. Most of his work is made primarily of glass and metal, which expresses a paradoxical symbiosis. The relationship between the rigid strength of metal with the inherent fragility of glass creates an alluring tension. While many of his pieces reference his curiosity about science, they also convey humor, simple narratives, and a lightheartedness that is embodied in much of science fiction's antiquated vision of the future. The theme of “futuristic antiquity” reflects Allen's interest in the literary fictional worlds of Jules Vern, H.G. Wells, Arthur C. Clark, and Isaac Asimov and their influence on the scientific community. His sculpture is also inspired by the accounts of early scientific pioneers of the 19 and 20th centuries, such as Nicola Tesla, Robert Goddard, Wernher von Braun, and other great scientific minds. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Allen earned a BA in Anthropology from Franklin Pierce University, New Hampshire. His earliest and formative glass studio experiences and education came as a studio assistant in Providence, working with a number of wonderful artists to include Daniel Clayman, James Watkins, and Michael Scheiner. Allen relocated to Washington in 1994, where he joined the William Morris team at the Pilchuck Glass School for 13 years, specializing in engraving, cutting, and finishing glass sculpture. Allen has had numerous solo exhibitions of his sculptures throughout the country, including at the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, the Museum of Northwest Art, Traver Gallery, Blue Rain Gallery, Schantz Gallery, and Duncan McClellan Gallery. His sculptures have been acquired for a number of public and private collections, including Glass Museum in Tacoma, Imagine Museum, Toyoma Institute of Glass, Blue Origin, Boeing, Amazon and SpaceX. In 2016, his work appeared in a feature cover story published by American Craft magazine and in 2018, he was awarded “Grand Artist of the future” by Imagine Museum. In 2005, Allen established a glass and sculpture studio with his wife, artist Shelley Muzylowski Allen at their property in Skagit County, Washington. In addition to being artists, the couple has taught internationally at the Toyama Institute of Glass in Toyama, Japan, and the International Glass Festival in Stourbridge, England. They have also taught nationally, including the Penland School of Craft, Pittsburgh Glass Center, and at Pilchuck Glass School. A lifelong Star Trek devotee – whose earliest memories of creation involved making scotch tape and cardboard phasers and communicators – Allen was contacted by Eugene (Rod) Roddenberry, son of Star Trekcreator Gene Roddenberry and current spokesman for Trekkies everywhere. Intrigued by Allen's work after seeing a piece one of his friends owned, Roddenberry commissioned a sculpture of the original series' Starship Enterprise. The sculpture was to reflect the basic design of the original Enterprise, but also incorporate Allen's personality into a sculpture that was of his own original design and overall interpretation. Allen, in collaboration with wife Shelley, has created and will install two large public sculptures, Sticken (the Orchard Octopus) in September, and Heronious One in November in Bellevue, Washington. He will have an exhibition of new work in spring 2024 at Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and will collaborate with Dave Walters this fall.

YES! We finally got to explore and investigate a haunted ghost ship. Thank you to Rhonda and Elizabeth for asking us to join the crew. It's located in San Diego, CA and we definitely had some activity. This ship really brought us back to our early Coast Guard seaman days. It also brings to life a lot of 20,000 leagues Under the Sea by Jules Vern vibes. You should make a day trip at the very least to explore this maritime museum. It is historic, grand and all together a sailor's dream. It has been well kept under the watchful eye of Jim and his staff. For this episode any RUM drink will do. We recorded this episode in room 216 of the Horton Grand hotel located in San Diego's Gas Lamp district just before checking out. So no cocktails for us, just a lot of water to stay hydrated. As our valet said "Always get the LATE checkout." or was it "Happiness is a LATE checkout." We don't disagree, especially for an overnight stay and being up late ghost hunting around the hotel until 2 AM.So let's get right into it. What did we hear? What did we see? Who were we with? If you like this episode consider joining our PATREON channel. We have a bit more details and BTS for our patrons.Special THANKS!! to our impromptu guest hosts: Rob Hansen and Elizabeth Toller "Aunt Betsy". Super enjoyed investigating with you! Artist Joey Marsocci is a story teller who uses the mediums of theme park and haunt design, creature fabrication, illustration, writing, acting, cosplay, and more to tell his stories. He’s passionate about building immersive experiences for those who enjoy his strange worlds. Joey knew he wanted to be in arts and entertainment since childhood. He loved watching scary movies like Jaws and figuring out how they were made. Authors like Jules Vern and Mary Shelley put his imagination into overdrive. Teaching keeps him evolving as an artist. Art is therapy for him, and he infuses this into his lectures and classes. Students leave his classes with both technical and storytelling skills. Joey explained theme parks are stories that you can directly interact with. Studying at CalArts gave him the opportunity to work on revisions to the Disney Haunted Mansion and the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction. Joey’s favorite haunt is located at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, NY. It naturally feels creepy, foreboding, and dreadful to him. He’s had his own paranormal experiences there. Everything in the haunt is connected back to author Washington Irving and his time period. Joey is an actor at the haunt and creates custom monsters for it. Joey doesn’t break character when he is acting. He reminds himself that “monsters don’t get sick of being monsters” to keep himself from getting fatigued. Joey finished the show by giving us an overview of his latest secret project at the Curioporium. Check out Joey and his work at http://www.grymmstudios.com You can find the Curioporium at https://www.curioporium.com

Around The World In 80 Days is a remake of the Jules Vern classic starring Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan. Matt talks about ridiculous "as-seen-on T.V." inventions, the amazing inventions that Jules Vern foresaw, and of course, Ant-man and the Wasp. How do the revelations and characters from this installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe play into the currently untitled Avengers 4 film? No-one knows! It's still fun to speculate though. It's the early 1800s and before Rudolf Diesel and Henry Ford. Electricity is still a lab experiment. But it doesn't matter. We don't need any of what those guys were selling. The true motors of Innovation are started with firing up a boiler, copper or brass tubing, and driving pistons of power.
This week, Heather and Morgan fill you in on the little-known stories of Irena Sendler, who saved the lives of over 2,500 Jewish children during the Holocaust, and Nellie Bly, a journalist who not only went around the world in LESS than 80 days (suck it, Jules Vern!), but also exposed the horrifying conditions of turn of the century 'lunatic asylums.'

Todays guest can only be described as the new Jules Vern, or for younger listeners Michael Palin, as he is the creator of the site Around the world in 80 jobs whereby he crosses the globe, working in various positions of employment and of course sharing with us his successes, failures and crazy stories of a life on the road. Back in 2007,after graduating from UC Berkeley our guest set out on the open road for a year of adventure. With no clear plan. No fixed direction. And nothing more than a vague feeling of doing something memorable it was a path very different from where he is now. And looking back from where he is now, it seems almost unbelievable that he didn't immediately start blogging, creating content, or attempting to montize his wanderings across the globe. But that is the beauty of a show like Join Up Dots, as many times a persons true path in life only becomes visible to them when hitting a crossroads. And in this case it was an economic crossroads that made him decide on what he wanted to do in life. The economy had tanked in 2008, and the prospect of getting straight back into employment when returning to the US suddenly seemed a distant dream. And was it a dream that our guest was…..well dreaming about anyway? Lets find out as we add another job on the list as podcast guest (although Im not going to pay him…just keep that to ourselves) the amazing, Mr Turner Barr.
